First meal in Lisbon! My friend found this place and we decided to give it a try based on all of the great reviews. The wait was about 15 minutes but it was SO worth it! You must get their Red Giant Shrimp. I would take 10 if I could! The giant shrimp was grilled to perfection with amazing sauce ( garlic, butter, lemon, chives, and some secret ingredient ). The Pig's Trotter dish was alright for my personal taste. It is a bit greasy and I am not a huge fan of the texture. The flavor was nice but it had a strong after taste which was not so pleasant. We also shared the cheese and charcuterie special selection platter. It was just what we needed to pair up with lovely Rosé. Get the Rosé if you want something light, refreshing, fruity wine. I was very happy with my visit here and would go back if I ever visit Lisbon again ( which I will). read more

Our first meal in Lisbon and definitely the best! Great atmosphere, really delicious food and awesome service! Our server, very nice girl ( sorry didn't get her name) had v good suggestions! We had a late dinner at the Taberna at front of the restaurant. No wait around 10:30 pm. We had the giant red shrimp- must have! The exploding olives: do try, very good A little cone of smoked fish: so different and delicious!! The cod wrap: so light ! My husband had beef croquets which were good And The best dish of all : the asparagus and mushroom salad! Yum!! And their desserts are awesome too. I had a wonderful dining experience there! I made a reservation ahead of time for my husband and myself, but he was sick an unable to come with me. I went by myself, and felt so cared for by the wait staff! They were attentive, thoughtful, and kind. A longer than expected wait for one of my dishes resulted in a glass of wine on the house, which is just one example of how thoughtful my waiter was (I believe Michael is his name - I wish I were certain!). The food was delicious - cod lettuce wraps, squid with sweet potatoes and kimchi, and chocolate cake with the suggested port pairing. Bairro do Avillez (Avillez Neighborhood) is one of Chef Jose Avillez's restaurants. It has three sections, Taberna, which focus on charcuterie, Pateo, focusing on seafood, and Beco, for an evening meal with entertainment. The restaurant is spacious, with plenty of seating and full of natural light during daytime. I chose to dine at Pateo, as it had vegan offerings for my spouse. I started with Bacalhau a Bras com Azeitona Explosiva (Cod Bras Style with Explosive Olive), a traditional very successful dish, shredded cod with onion, potato sticks, eggs, parsley and "explosive olive"; it is an interpretation of the classic Portuguese dish, which was nice, but whatever seafood the table next to us ordered, its aroma was even better. My choice of dessert was Mil-Folhas de Pastel de Nata (Portuguese tart mile-feuille), Chef Avillez's interpretation of a Lisbon classic; again, it tasted good, but it was an unexpected interpretation of the dish. Although the food was not what I expected - I recognize, after the fact, that I was looking for a more traditional culinary experience, and did not know that Avillez likes to reinterpret classic dishes - the overall experience was pleasant. All I can say is this place has some of the best seafood I've ever had. Everything was super fresh and deliciously prepared. It's in a space where there are at least four other restaurants. They have a market with some great looking hams hanging in the window. Great food, beautiful ambiance and good service. read more

Rude staff, overpriced and sub par food. Decor is cute though. We ordered the red shrimp (one shrimp for 20 euro) it barely had any meat in it and was drenched in butter. We also got a charred Romain salad, it had clearly been charred in the morning and sat in a fridge all day. Not appetizing. The olive explosions were fine, basically olive juice with a gelatinous coating. The one thing that was good was the fries, but if you can't make fries taste good, that's concerning. read more

Good food, good atmosphere, friendly staff. The octopus with kimchi was a super interesting dish with great flavor, slightly tart. We actually ordered the bread starter at the end of the meal just to use the bread to soak up the sauce. The lettuce wraps with pork were amazing. So many different textures and flavors with just a hint of spice. The lettuce hearts that were grilled were quite tasty as well but definitely on the sour side. My son had the tuna steak sandwich which he polished off completely which is impressive given that he's only 10. Overall a great place to eat but on the more expensive side for the area read more

Very interesting place. We were on our way to Cantina Peruana, which we did not realize was inside of Bairro Do Avillez. You should have seen the confusion in our faces when we arrived. There are about 4 restaurants within this one building. Earlier in the week, we had been to Belcanto, which my brother in law had researched and made reservations way before we arrived to Portugal and the hubby and I ended up at Pizza Lisboa, which is also owned by Avillez. We came at 11:30 and the kitchen was already closing. Pots and pans were banging the entire time as the employees prepared to close. The bread was cold and stale. The mojito and cafe Lisbon cocktails were tasteless and a waste of Havana club. The mojito tastes like water and you must mix it yourself at the table. The cafe Lisbon was pure grenadine-an abomination of the worlds best rum. It tastes like a gas station slushee and/or a children's drink. The smoky rum is lost in both drinks. The suckling pig sandwich is pure pork fat. The seaweed is tasteless. The sandwich bread is tasteless. If you have ever had a "caja China" style pork sandwich you will be confused and very disappointed. This is not a "suckling pig sandwich"-it is a pig skin (chicaron) sandwich. The cod comes in a bowl fit only for your favorite pet. It is a bowl of gravy and potatoes and does not look or taste appetizing. The aesthetic of the restaurant is incredible. It is beautifully designed but the food is simply not good. The irony is that Jose Avillez has his own cookbooks on display but he is not there to ensure the quality of the food. It was surreal to be served poor quality food while looking at his smiling face on a cookbook for sale above the table. I attempted to explain all of this to the waitress but she said "that is how food tastes in Portugal". Portuguese food is delicious-just not this restaurant. Came here with the family to grab a late lunch. We ate in the taverna part of the restaurant which is tapas style so we split several dishes: Beefsteak sandwich (4 stars): This sandwich was not very big, but it was super flavorful and paired nicely with the bread. Octopus with kimchi (3 stars): I am not the biggest octopus fan so this was just alright for me. Not a lot of flavor overall. Linguica sausage bread (4 stars): This was an interesting combination of flavors that actually worked pretty well together. Twice cooked veal (4.5 stars): This was probably my favorite dish of the night as it was super tender and flavorful. Overall, most of the dishes here were very tasty, though they were also all a bit on the smaller side. The service here was alright, though not as attentive as I would have liked. read more

Absolutely disgraceful experience. I made a reservation days ahead for 7:00 pm, and moved it to 9:00 pm on the day of...the hostess inquired as to whether I'd like to eat at 10, and when I said I'd prefer earlier, she assigned me the 9:00 pm slot. My party and I were (uncharacteristically) early for our reservation, arriving just before nine and joining the queue of eager diners who flocked to taste Chef Avillez's famed dishes. We did not get that far. We waited in line for over an hour and 15 minutes and, though we politely made our presence known to the hostess multiple times (because things get busy and it's hard to keep track of different parties all at once), not only did she not seat us, but we watched her seat several parties that arrived after us and had reservations for times after our dining slot. After telling the hostess how incensed we were, she apologized and said keeping track of names was confusing--it might be time to look into a new system for keeping track of reservations, such as those used by thousands of other restaurants. She didn't offer to give us a drink on the house, she just acted as if she was doing us a great service by seating us 1.5 hours late. I have never left a restaurant so livid, and we refused to stay because, frankly, I didn't want to pay any great sum of money, let alone petty change, to a restaurant that clearly didn't value me as a patron. As an aside, we went to bao boa instead, which I would recommend. I am sure that the food at this restaurant is delectable, as others have posted about. However, there are too many quality restaurants in Lisbon that showcase gorgeous Portuguese cuisine to justify spending what is a relatively large sum of money for horrendous service. read more

We tried several small plate dishes and there wasn't a single disappointing item: octopus (sauce was a tad spicy but very good, so tender), pork strips (very flavorful) with fries (had a nice sauce on it), garlic and chile shrimp (very delicious--off the seafood menu), and beef to name a few. Sangria is also made to order so it tasted fresh and very nice. Definitely get the dessert--salted caramel. I've never had anything like it before. Olive oil and honey pudding was okay too. Got to do an Avillez when in Lisbon and this one was closest and the type we wanted. We went to Taverna for lunch. Not crowded at all, plenty of seats, plenty of people still though. The food as ranked with favorite coming first was the octopus, beef croquette, charcuterie. The service was decent. Some staff definitely felt happier to be there while others felt didn't really give off a vibe of happiness. They weren't rude or anything, I'd just feel happier to be around happier people. The décor was very nice, good walk around the entire place to see the restaurant in the back as well. The restaurant (different) in the back I'd say looks better décor wise. read more

Excellent restaurant. I was very lucky to have been seated within minutes of my arrival.There aren't many seats in the Taberna section, so if you don't have a reservation expect to wait. Got the shrimp, cod, and pork lettuce wrap. The wrap was very tasty, great flavours all around. I didn't care too much for the cod as I felt like it was pretty bland. But every time I've had cod, it's always been that way, so I'm guessing there's not much you can do with that fish. The star is by far the shrimp. At €16.50 for a single shrimp, I would call that a hefty price tag, but it was truly excellent and I could have eaten a couple more of them if my wallet allowed. Great tapas-style restaurant. Showed up without a reservation on a Monday evening without a problem. Sangria was refreshing and food was quite good. A good friend recommended this place to me, and one of the hostel staff told us it was one of his go-to places, so I knew we were in good hands. The three of us came here for lunch and we got right away to ordering. The exploding olives are a MUST. I've seen this on my friends' social feeds for quite some time now, and I knew I had to try them out for myself. They take the meaning of party in your mouth to a whole new level. They're basically huge, soft squishy olives (think Tide pods) that you put in your mouth and let them POP and a whole slew of salted spices and goodness just flood through your perioral senses. EEEEK. It's so cool. But super salty (the Portuguese really douse their food with copious amounts of sodium, hypertension much?), so proceed with caution. Next up, their Iberian pork steak sandwich. So good. Not fatty at all. Delicious, tender goodness. I was afraid it was going to be like fatty ribeye (which I am not a fan of) and I don't really like pork, but my best friend told me I had to get it and I'm glad I listened to him. So good. We were disappointed with this place. We were seated in the "pateo" and not the "Taberna" so I'm not sure if the menu was the same or different. The Taberna side seemed more hip-so maybe try there if you are wanting to give it a try. I had the tuna and my husband had the cod. We felt both were fine but nothing special. I am newish to eating fish but thought the tuna didn't taste very fresh. The service was slow and not particularly helpful with suggestions. The amount of food was just right (not too much or too little). The ambiance was lacking and the restaurant wasn't full at 9 pm which should have been peak time. They also charged 3.50 per person for bread which we thought was pricey. Our entrees were 29 each. Didn't live up to the hype for us. read more

If you're in Lisbon, you have to go here and taste some of avillez's food. We got a reservation at Taberna and started with the exploding olives which is like Alinea mixed with an olive. Hubby had the cod dish with cornbread and said it was amazing. The pear/walnut/salad was just ok but at least it had a bit of a twist in that the endives were grilled. I had the grilled aged beef that was very tasty and came with fries that had a couple of delicious sauces on top. If you can't get into the Michelin star restaurants, go here! read more

I surely didn't try all the restaurants in Lisbon and being a first timer I surely don't have a read on the city as a whole but the answer is 'yes', if you want something modern, but respectful of tradition, with a contemporary design sense and food that you can literally eat without teeth (because it is that damn tender) than you should be ashamed of you don't come here. A short walk from most of the major hotels some might find it a little too Brooklyn meets Lisbon, but those people should go straight now back to Brooklyn. Get here, eat here, drink here. read more

Horrible, jusf horrible. The place itself is nice but the food is not worth your money. Apart from the fact that the portions are small, they are quite overpriced for the quality. We got pork neck and beef and it was served with mayo, ketchup and fries which btw they were deep fried in really bad quality oil.
