Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. Bak is featured in the Michelin guide. The restaurant is located in a rustic building on the 3rd floor facing the water. There is a bus stop nearby. The dining room features a view of the open kitchen. Meal started off with a coat check. Made a reservation and paid a 40€ deposit to be applied to the bill. The 5 course tasting menu was mainly vegetarian and was quite light for 75€. Located on the banks of the river IJ in Amsterdam's recently re-developed "Westelijk Havengebied" area, BAK is a must try restaurant with amazing food and serious wine, served in a laid-back and contemporary setting. The architecture of the restaurant is just stunning, with the unique windows on one side and extremely high ceiling to make it airy. The menu reflects the chef's love for seasonal and local ingredients, and on the wine list you can expect natural wines and quirky grape varieties with many by the glass options. For lunch, BAK offers a very affordable three-course at about 30 Euros, while dinner pre-fixe is 95 euros. Everything can be ordered a la carte. To take advantage of the interesting grape varietals, we opt for the a la carte menu and for the Somm to recommend the pairing for us. For about 10 euros a glass, we tried many different wines through France and Italy . Food is full on flavor, creative and the combinations just work! The amuse bouche is a beef tartare wrapped in shiso leaf: a refreshing way to start the rest of the night. My highlight is the Cornish hen with a 18 euro supplement of black truffles: it is moist, flavorful and cooked just right. My starter, raw scallop served in a hazelnut oil and quince juice is creative and perfect. The duck heart appetizer also scored high for me. To me, this summery vegetable-forward menu evokes the best nature poetry. There are specific dishes I could still taste, even though it's been a month since I ate here. The pea soup (everyone's favorite) was an absolutely gorgeous drop of summer morning dew, like waking up after a restful sleep in fresh clean silk sheets.  Where the pea soup represented morning, the beet and nectarine combination was the plump, juicy afternoon of summer, bursting with an intoxicating joy. Ambiance is the only thing Bak has right. Food is bland with sauces that are mediocre at best. Claim they can cater to vegetarians but the courses for vegetarians are poorly put together afterthoughts. Two back to back courses had cured egg yolk and the rest were all just grilled veggies with flavorless sauces/ foams. Not one vegetarian course was substantial enough to feel satisfying. We were finally looking forward to the dessert courses which too ended up being disappointing. Was skeptical when this was a) super far from the main area/near ports b) buzz up was required to enter the building and it was so quiet PRICE WAS FAIR AND VALUABLE. Came for lunch prix fixe which can usually have a lot of hits and misses but €34.50 for 3 courses considering the quality and presentation was phenomenal FOOD WAS FRESH, TASTY AND NOVEL - free bread: sourdough was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft but dense on the inside - beet salad with blackberries: tart but sweet from the blackberries, and savory with the onion - fish: perfectly crispy skin, tender on the inside with a slightly sweet but savory carrot sauce and purée. Even the zucchini was perfectly cooked - dessert: plums perfectly cooked and rose kombucha and sorbet went surprisingly well with the dollop of whipped cream. Slightly tart, not very sweet -- YUm TLDR: lunch prix fixe was definitely worth it and I'd highly recommend coming. The 9 course menu was very vegetable forward and after 2 weeks traveling was a welcome reward. The dishes were delicious and well prepared. Omg! Wasn't in Amsterdam too long (only 4 days), but BAK served my favorite meal of my visit. The food was delicious and the service was great (besides a slight slip with the water). I had the regular tasting menu for lunch and enjoyed most of the dishes immensely. Some of the standouts were the winter cod and parsley root dishes. I would return in a heartbeat! read more

I visited Bak while vacationing in Amsterdam to celebrate turning 33! I can safely say that this was one of the best birthday dinners I've had - from the great pescetarian menu to the wine pairings. Bak is really a terrific restaurant. Not only is the food delicious and beautifully presented, but the location is a treat in itself. At first glance the simple menu might seem unappealing. One of the dishes was described as "oatmeal, mussels, fennel and cornichons". To be honest, it sounded terrible to me. However, it was one of the most delicious dishes we tried! Creamy risotto-like oatmeal was topped with perfectly cooked mussels and sour cornichons. It still might sound strange, but it was surprisingly yummy! Other highlights of the meal included the dessert of strawberries and tomatoes with goat milk frozen yogurt and the amuse bouche of squid ink crackers topped with a tarragon mousse. The wines paired perfectly with each dish. It was fun to taste the wine before the food was served, and then after taking a bite. The flavors complimented each other wonderfully. Interesting set menu focused on vegetable and fish. Wine selection leans towards Italian than French, not international. Dishes are creative, don't believe they are following a Dutch theme. Accommodating to dietary constraints. We have a vegan and a gluten/lactose free friend. They were able to accommodate both. Of all the items, it was the cheese plate that's a bit of disappointment. We booked this restaurant after its claim of being modern gastronomic cuisine - as second time visitors to Amsterdam my family and I decided it was time to steer away from the pancake houses and Indonesian food , so we made a reservation to BAK. I wanted to see how creative these chefs could get with asking for a vegan option prior to our arrival. The vegan option was similar to the regular menu with slight alternations mainly replacing any protein with mushrooms and asparagus, The food was delicious - seasonal produce sourced from Amsterdam. Our kombucha served in a wine glass was laced with carrot juice but somehow tasted very similarly to apple cider vinegar. Coke was also served in a wine glass, Pretentious or fancy? You tell me. Overall it was good 'pretty' food but I'm sad to say the timing of our dining experience was a let down. We arrived at 6:30 in an attempt to make sure we could still make it on time at 9:00 to meet our friend. We didn't leave till 10:30 - which is good to make an evening out of but sadly on our schedule was not working out for us. If visiting BAK make sure you have the rest of the night free and money to spend as the bill racked up quite high. It's value for money is debatable. I want to give this place a three and a half star just because personally none of the meals were very memorable for me - don't get me wrong they were delicious but I've had better vegan meals elsewhere in amsterdam. read more

Great experience, wonderful food, cozy atmosphere and helpful staff. What more could you ask for? I think I'm just giving it four stars because I felt a few of the dishes could have used some work. They needed a little more pizzazz. The wine pairing for the most part was not really my cup of tea. Wasn't bad but just more white wine than I would like to have. It was a fun experience though. If you can ask for one of the tables near the window then you're really be in for a treat. Also you have to buzz yourself up which is sort of fun to do. It is located in a beautiful old warehouse building overlooking the wharf of the IJ. Certainly recommended for anyone looking for a tasting menu in a unique part of town. We will be going back again to try the menu once it changes for fall. read more

I read the reviews before coming and I was excited to try the restaurant. In fact I made reservations nearly a month in advance. Nowhere on the website did it ask if you want it a window seat so I did not know to request one. When I got to the restaurant I asked for a window seat and was told that it was reserved for their best customers. Emile went downhill from there. Our waiter a young gentleman had more attitude than experience Never once and I mean never did he come by to ask how the meal was. Strike number one. When I asked if the fish I ordered headphones he said yes I asked if he could remove the bones in the kitchen and he refused. When the fish came I spent 10 minutes picking bones out of my throat during this time he never came by to see why I was sticking my finger down my throat. Likewise he never came by to fill up our wine glass or the water glass. The food was inventive but marginal the portions were just a bit smaller than airplane size so naturally we left hungry we did not stay for dessert because frankly no one came by to even ask if we wanted dessert I do not recommend this restaurant and will not be returning unless of course the staff gets a attitude adjustment and the portions are a bit more substantial read more

My experience was tainted by multiple rude interruptions from the wait staff asking myself and my party to "quiet down." We were at BAK to celebrate my friend's wedding and were enjoying ourselves until this occurred. If you like to enjoy yourself while at dinner, I recommend you dine elsewhere. read more

Been here twice while working in Amsterdam and have never been disappointed by the wonderful and creative dishes here with local ingredients! If you luck out, they may have some special organic wines to try. Great views of the water in an artsy, industrial building. read more

This restaurant is absolutely top-class. I went here for lunch and had the three-course surprise menu. It's rare that I genuinely praise the food artistry of a Dutch restaurant, but this was really a perfect meal. Clean, simple, elegant dishes that's still managed to be innovative and surprising - and absolutely all of it was so delicious. Local and fresh, and left you feeling pleasantly full. Not to mention the stunning view over the water if you get a seat at one of the "window" tables. I recommend this place to anyone in the mood for a lunch or dinner "someplace nice". read more
