Go figure. For the past two years, the best restaurant I've eaten at in Amsterdam is Tibetan!? Absolutely. This is a must stop on anyone's Amsterdam journey especially if exploring non-Continental food. Norling is in the city center, Centrum, on Reguliersdwarsstraat, the heart of one of Amsterdam's prime gay areas. Consequently, there is a lot of foot traffic and reservations are advised as Norling is getting popular with Dutch and visitors. This is NOT Chinese food even though China claims Tibet as theirs. Tibetan (or Tibetaans in Dutch) food is Himalayan, similar to Nepalese. Every dish I've eaten used fresh ingredients, was perfectly cooked and not too salty. All were colorful and beautifully plated. Many of Norling's dishes offer interchangeable proteins such as beef, chicken, lamb, pork, shrimp or vegetarian. The curries are freshly made and fully flavorful. Dal is wonderful too! You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, so be adventurous. Cap your meal with espresso and Licor 43 over ice for the perfect ending. Norling is a small restaurant on two floors but it is not a hole-in-the-wall. The interior is artful, modern, intimate and clean. I'm typically a planner. I love an hour-by-hour itinerary that leaves nothing to chance and no stress of trying to think of an activity on the spot. My husband is the opposite. Gosh he hates solid plans and doesn't even consider confirmed plans as confirmed plans. It's very frustrating, but we met in the middle for this trip, only planning a few meals/activities and letting the rest be decided on the fly. This dinner was one of our on the fly dinners and it's made me change my ways. Perhaps leaving things to chance and whims isn't so bad. We wanted to explore an area we hadn't been to before and we like Tibetan food, so we made our way to Norling and were seated upstairs instantly. It's a cozy restaurant with a few small levels, I believe in what used to be a residence. We opted for the tasting menu which is a fantastic deal! It's a huge menu for only 24,50 each. We literally could not believe the amount of food. I really loved the vegetarian noodle dish and the lamb in creamy potatoes. The chicken wings had the most perfect crisp I've ever experienced. I had never had food from Tibet before, I was a little apprehensive as I once read their kitchen is famous for blood sausage and flavorful bugs. Norling surprised me in many ways, the food they served is a delicious mix of what to me looks like Indian, Chinese. The starters were these deep fried spring rolls which were great but the dipping sauce that came with, oh my heavenly days! Quite a few dishes had lentils in them which led me to believe I enjoyed some tasteful food while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. read more

I wandered upon this place on a Friday night around 10:30pm. The ambiance was relaxed, the servers were efficient and friendly, and the food was spectacular. My dining partner and I shared an appetizer of veggie dumplings (juicy and flavorful, no sauces even needed) and each ordered a vegetarian entree. The chef actually brought out a cold fried tofu salad on the house and it was also delicious! Enough food left over for breakfast the next day. Fantastic little Tibetan restaurant who deserves the best score. I loved the location, the restaurant is really small and the interiour is a tasteful mix of old and new. The food was marvellous and really, really tasty. I loved the chicken curry with fried rice! The wine of the house was excellent, so was the dessert. And it was not at all expensive, about 75€ for two starters, two main courses, two desserts, two espressos, four glasses of wine and still water. The food is all made in the restaurant from fresh ingredients. And the staff is really helpful and service-minded. 100% recommended, thank you for a lovely evening :) read more

Out of the many restaurants we visited in Amsterdam, I felt this one deserves my time for a nice review. We went on a Wednesday evening and they were full both upstairs and downstairs yet they were still able to accommodate us. I noticed the decor of this place was very authentic and beautiful as it felt very warm and homelike. The staff was very welcoming and patient with us while we were trying to find the right thing to order. We ended up ordering a few things on the menu and everything was perfection from their appetizers down to their deserts. I'd say the Chicken Curry and Sweet and Sour Chicken was my favorite but I also enjoyed the vegetarian lo-mein and the other vegetarian dishes we ordered. I didn't try the creamy lamb curry (I don't eat lamb) but my partner said it was extremely delicious. Overall, we left very happily and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is seeking authentic flavors with great service. Will definitely be back on our next visit to Amsterdam!! We stumbled upon this restaurant on our first night in Amsterdam and it was by far the best meal we had throughout all of our travels in Europe. The price is reasonable for the amount and quality of food that we had. Our group of 4 shared the tasting menu and truly enjoyed every dish. The venue is small but cosy. Service is efficient but not exellent. We took sweet & sour chicken with egg fried rice and also a vegan mushroom dish with steamed rice. My vegan friend really enjoyed her dish. She said that the vegetables were well steamed what according to her is not that common. For me the chicken was also very good but it was nothing over exciting. Me and my friend both agreed that our dishes needed some extra sauce as rice is a bit dry. Super lovely Asian food. I ordered vegetarian tofu, with black mushroom (dried than fried) pak Choi, green beans and a lot of more fresh vegetables. It came with fried egg rice and their special sauce. The sauce was soooo good, I wanted to lick it of the plate. Everything was fresh and cooked perfect. My meat eating friends were also happy. Food That Taste Like Heaven While on vacation in Amsterdam, several friends and I walked up and down this "restaurant row" in the gay district and nonchalantly decided on Norling. The food is amazing! Go with a group of friends so that you can order a number of different dishes to share. The young man who owns the restaurant is delightful and took special care and pride in all aspects of the service. The food was delicious. We chatted a bit with the friendly Tibetan Owner/Chef about our travels to Tibet last year. Don't let the menu scare you away. It is Tibetan food, yet the menu simplifies it for the Dutch people (many who have never heard of Momo) - hence "beef dumpling" and other dishes described with known Chinese dish labels. There is no Yak, because Amsterdam doesn't carry it. Yet they have many authentic tasty dishes with fresh ingredients, and the restaurant is cozy with Tibetan decorations. The one suggestion is for Tibetan desserts (rather than the typical Dutch ice creams and cheesecake), yet the Chef/Owner did make a sweet sunset for us to decorate our dessert plate.
