Visited on a beautiful late fall afternoon. We didn't catch a tour, but I'm not sure we missed much. From what we were told, all of the grape growing, wine making and aging is happening elsewhere. It's a really cool historic site and it's really worth visiting. The wines are about what you'd expect from Midwest wine. They tend to the very sweet end. Get here for a visit - the structure itself is worth seeing. As a bonus, I found their bourbon surprisingly good. read more

What a cute find in Kentucky! An easy drive from Cincinnati for an afternoon of tastings. They have numerous "extras" through the summer you can reserve ahead of time such as pairing tastings, etc. We each did a tasting of everything they were offering because it's a new place for us. Wines are definitely more suited for those liking sweeter wines but a few we ok for this bold, dry lover. They explained that all the grapes were from Kentucky. As wine lovers from the west coast who prefer Spanish and Italian wines we wouldn't rate Kentucky as a wine haven but this is a fun stop and the atmosphere is well worth the trip! Parking is tricky and if you have a anyone with stability issues drop them at the door. We did the free history tour ... the guide was a nice young man but nearly all of his actual wine facts were dead wrong...perhaps his history information was close to correct as the building is old and has a history with the under ground railroad but I can't believe it is actually the first vineyard in the US Overall, well worth a quick trip from Cincy! read more

Really cool old building and super friendly employees. We had the flight of all the wines that they offer. Our expectations were low, wine from this part of the country is usually not awesome. I'd say out of the ten wines we had, three were decent, but not good enough to want a whole bottle. We also sampled the bourbon, and it was surprisingly decent even though it hasn't aged too long. I'm not sure we'd make a special trip to go back, but I'm glad we checked this place out. It's certainly a cool building and a historical lesson all in one. read more

Looking for a fun weekend drive out in the country? This winery involved a pretty drive through the countryside with river views. Situated in the quiet river town of Augusta Ky, this is a great weekend drive. We enjoyed not only the drive and the winery but also the quaint river town. The historical placket states that it was once the largest producer of wines in the US during the 1870's. Be sure and take a tour of the old winery to learn it's fascinating history. The wine cave and the main building are amazing examples of 1800's ingenuity. However, all the present day winemaking is done off sight for this winery. There is also a distillery on the premise. We enjoyed tasting their wines and their bourbon. The white wine aged in a bourbon barrel was a first for me- it was very unique and we ended up purchasing a bottle to take home. They have very limited hours so check before you go. read more

America's oldest vineyard has a lot of history and the owner and staff are the proud history keepers. If you love wine + bourbon + history + learning about wine making you should go to this place. An hour east of Cincinnati, even the drive along the River was pretty and we took a car ferry right into the town of Augusta. The Thunderbolt wine was my favorite, it's red wine made in bourbon barrels. The tasting room is partially open air so if it is cold outside dress appropriately, but they do have small fire pits at every sitting area. It's definitely smaller than you'd think for the amount of wine they put out, but well worth a visit. read more

We had visited Baker Bird several years ago. At that point, we were novices in our wine tasting and really only liked sweet wine. When we left at that time, we had kind of put this winery on the back burner of places to return. I'm SO glad we came back!!! First of all, their Covid procedures were top notch. They checked IDs and everyone had to sanitize their hands before going into the tasting room. We had one person with us who enjoys history and hadn't been to the winery before. Luckily, we got there right before a tour was starting. Tours were $10. Since it was raining, we got an abbreviated tour but the tour guide did an amazing job. The wine cellar is definitely something to see and we got to cork our own empty bottle to take home. The wine was 4 for $5. The lady who helped me was so fun and spunky. I enjoyed all of the wine. The Silver Swallow was my favorite and I left with a bottle. The staff was so friendly and knowledgeable. I'm so glad we stopped in and we will definitely be returning! read more

Very old historic property and tons of history behind it! Was able to enjoy plenty of wine, take a tour and enjoy the wooded views. Hours are limited. Only open Sat & Sun from 1-5. NICE facility with Nice wines and the historical background is interesting at it is the oldest touted winery in America. We learned a bit about the grapes and the various vines. None are grown on site, there is now a highway running thru what was once the North to South directional planting of vines. My down side is tastings are now 3 for $5. I bought one tasting and then bought a $28 bottle Another couple that was buying a bottle ot free samples. How does that work? We did get $2 bucks off for buying a half hour $10 tour. My next ask is why were the other couple just tagging along and easedropping for free, our young guide would not have had it in him to tell the easedroppers it was an active paid tour. Then there was a sad little cheese plate on a paper plate with crumbled crackers, a couple plain triskets and there was small scattering of cheese beside three salami slices and mini grape cluster for $12. Pretty sure $5 would be a fair rate. Staff was friendly and grounds were indeed the highlight of the non handicapped accessible grounds. You can be dropped at the door if you have a driver who too is not handicapped. Not able to do bourbon side as we were told they did not have staff. Told us we could look in or buy a bottle. They do offer a free tour as well and we took that too. read more

We began our visit with a tour full of fascinating history about the winery which was established in 1797. It included a trip down to the amazing wine cellar. This's tour and tasting took about an hour and it was time well spent. There is a covered area with tables and chairs if you want to hang out longer and enjoy the wine. They also offer cheese trays to pair with the wine. I tried all the dry wines for my tasting. I prefer dry red wine. Their Cabernet Franc was good but the Black Barrel Wine was my favorite. It is aged in Bourbon barrels. You should definitely try it. read more

Baker Bird is the oldest winery in America. It was built by german immigrants in the mid 1800's. I read about this on the "Yelp's summer bucket list" (2014). After I read about it, I put it on my on my to do list and wanted to come here badly due to history and the old wine cellar. They are only open on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00p.m. We came on a Sunday midafternoon. Weather was perfect (sunny and 80 degrees). When we walked in, I fell in love with the decor and nostalgia of the barn like building. It's very open and decorated rustic with high/lounge/small chairs and tables scattered. Very comfortable and welcoming. In the back room, there is entertainment (acoustical guitar) played low and lightly so you are able to talk. I wanted to try the wine tastings first. You get 5 tastings for $5.00. They start you off with light wines to dark. You drink from a plastic cup, but if you would like a glass, you are able to purchase it for $5.00. I had the: -Vidal Blanc -Cardonelle -Silver Swallow -Red Robin -Cabernet Franc My favorite is the Cabernet Franc which was a dry red wine. I wanted to purchase a bottle which is $17.00. After I did the tasting, my husband and I did a self tour (tours are $10.00) at the old wine cellar which is really awesome! You go down the steps and in the bottom of the building. Looks like a dungeon in a castle. I felt like I was in a different country. I was really impressed! I read that they also do weddings in the cellar. I wanted a glass of wine and relax before we head back to Cincy. Of course I got the Cabernet Franc for $5.00. They definately make you feel like you are at home. The whole experience was great! The staff was very friendly and knowledgable. A must visit on the Kentucky Wine Trail. read more

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon, and the winery was fairly busy. It was during Augusta's "Civil War Days" festival, so there were a few folks in period dress, which was kind of neat. The young man greeting us thanked us and asked for an email address as we were handed the guest register. He also let us know we were welcome to wander the grounds as more of a self-guided tour, or we could wait for the tour he would be guiding on the hour. We made our way to the bar and were greeted by a very pleasant young lady, with a very bubbly personality. She offered the 5/$5 tastings, and each was a very generous pour. Personally, I only cared for one of the reds, the Cabernet Franc, but I really only like a dry, red wine. We bought a cheese plate. Certainly not high-end: A slice of salami, a stack of pre-cubed colby jack cheese, and a small stack of crackers on a dinner plate. We took our next tastings and wandered through the house, then headed down to the old cellar. It was a neat thing to see, and I could imagine the fun you could have at a reception or other event. All in all, it was an OK visit. I think it's odd they call it a winery, though. They don't actually make wine here. The wine is made off-site and shipped in here to taste and sell. Maybe the "Baker Bird Wine Store" is more accurate. Solid 3-stars. read more

We had a fun afternoon at Baker Bird after buying their Groupon. It was a good way to get us to make the drive from Cincinnati, but I don't see myself returning. The tour was ok, the actual place is beautiful and a nice place to have a glass of wine and relax. I could see the underground wine cellar being awesome for events. The wine itself was not special to me, tried a few whites in a flight and bought a bottle of red that was most drinkable. Keep in mind no wine is included in the Groupon, which is fine, but abnormal. The cheese board that came with the Groupon was small and not great. Visit just for the atmosphere, but I won't drive over an hour for a couple hours again. read more

This the oldest winery in the State, Owner told us she saved it from being bulldozed in. On warm day there patio are is great, The have tours. You can see the old wine cellar from 1800's. I am an architectural nerd so I was really excited to see this historic place and get the walk through. When we first arrived we were greeted by a smiling, bubbly lady who offered to give us the standard tour ( a walk through of four almost empty rooms). The first room is full of cheaply laminated photocopies of loosely relevant historical documents hung with zip ties on metal stands. Clearly need some work on a better presentation, but the story attached was interesting. The next two rooms ( really just a double parlor) has the paint chipping and peeling off. Clearly no attempts were made to improve them or even to capitalize on the original architectural details ( some of which are actually painted over). Then we were directed to take the stairs and see ourselves down to the cellar. I am sure this beautiful stone barrel-vaulted, earth-sheltered is even more impressive when someone actually bothers to tell you the story of it. It is creatively lit to showcase the texture of the walls, but at the end of the room there is a pile of barrels covered in black mold, along with a couple of piles of hay(?) also molding... Bizarre. In that room were also three plastic tables with plastic chairs around them, no idea why since it did not seem to be an extension of the tasting room. Up until then, we were still rather excited to have driven over an hour to a secluded winery. We went back up to the main floor and approached the bar. Immediately we were overwhelmed by the smell of cigarettes from the lady pouring the tastings. We mentioned that we had the Groupon (which included an extended tour, cheese plate, desert samplings and wine glasses) at which she muttered something about how we should have gotten the tour, said she would ask the guy for a cheese platter and would be back with our glasses. The owner, who is really sweet comes by and puts two grimy, small, clearly cheap quality glasses on the bar and says "make sure to rinse those before you use them". What??? You are having me drink wine out of plastic cups (really) when it would take you three seconds under running water to make the glasses I paid for usable. Anyway, we continue on to the tasting. The lady that smells of cigarettes lists the wines that she has for tasting today and then mentions that the owner has opened a bottle of the Bourbon Wine even though she is not supposed to (while rolling her eyes). Then she annoyingly and dismissively mentions that our Groupon also includes "where they show you how to taste the wine", but makes no effort to maybe bring someone over to perform that service. So we muster on and try to have an informed conversation with her ,,, which fails miserably since sh herself declares that she does not like wine and does not drink wine. The cause of her disdain for wine becomes apparent a few wines in. Normally I like to stick my nose in the wine and smell it ,but with her around everything had a bitter twinge of sweat and cigarettes. Ok, no nose on the wine, on to the taste. Blech!!!! The wines were so shallow and obvious. A good wine has a whole composition of subtle flavors and hints. The Baker-Bird wines have none of those. One of the wines was compared to Kool-Aid by Smokey-Girl herself, and she was surprisingly on point. All the subtlety of a sugared jackhammer. It was a flat, sweet, soured, alcoholic grape juice. This is the quality you buy when you are in college, and it costs two dollars at the gas station. At $17 and up, it is overpriced swill. To call this wine is to call McDonald's a restaurant. I really wanted to like it, but even the live music ( way too loud for the acoustics of a bare stone room) was sub par and actually annoying. At one point the lady on guitar started a verse of "Old McDonald" because there was a teetering kid approaching her. And why is there a child at a winery? I would not come back, and I would strongly discourage anyone with taste buds from visiting. read more

Baker-Bird Winery is, apparently, the first commercial vineyard in the United States. My wife and I stopped by on our anniversary and took the time to go on the tour. The tour is short, and that afternoon did not include going through the areas where they produce the wine. We did, however, have the opportunity to go down the stairs and explore the former storage below the main building where they hold events. The facility is in a beautiful area of Kentucky, and between the facilities and the view, it is worth visiting for those alone. Baker-Bird has some interesting wines. I found their Chambourcin to be a little tart for my tastes. They had other wines that we enjoyed very much, such as the Catawba and the Cabernet Franc. This is definitely a mature winery that has put thought, experience, and love into their wines. Although it is a little out of the way, my wife and I plan to return and restock as often as necessary. read more

Let's start out with the positives: The owner is fantastic. She is friendly, passionate, and engaging. Incredibly sincere with the all best parts of southern hospitality. The history of the place is impressive and enchanting. The building is gorgeous and the wine cellar is a must see. The Bourbon Barrel wine was pretty tasty with an interesting process. That being said, the experience was disappointing. The interior of the inside of the building is somewhat run down with the paint peeling off in some of the non-used rooms that they take you through on the small tour. We bought the groupon which was supposed to include a chocolate, dessert tasting, and cheese tray and souvenir glasses. The lady that was serving us also said it was supposed to give us a longer tour but then didn't offer the give us the rest of it as we had already gone on the short tour when we first arrived. The plate that came out was just a small sampling of basic cheeses (Mostly Mild Cheddar Cubes and some other slices) paired with flavored crackers (Including the Chicken flavored ones-Not a good compliment to any cheese). The lady that was pouring the samples said she didn't like wine and didn't have very many constructive things to say about the wines. She also smelled strongly of smoke which was distracting for the wine tasting. As for the wine itself, it was all very sweet with no complexity. Some were ok and some were not. The Bourbon Barrel wine was the only one that I cared for but at $35 a bottle it just wasn't that good. We may have set our expectations too high but I wouldn't make a trip down. If you are in the area it is an interesting stop, but don't buy the groupon, it was a waste of money. read more

We visited the Baker-Bird winery with the Tri-State Kayakers after a paddle on nearby Bracken Creek. We found the entire experience delightful. We enjoyed the easy parking, the friendliness of the staff, an interesting historical tour, the immense cellar, nice acoustical guitar,and a decent value ($5 for five tastes).. I would give five stars if the tasting was in glass wine glasses, the order of the tasting was carefully considered (we were offered sweet wines first), some palate cleansing was available, and I didn't feel a bit rushed (though it was a large group). They just need a bit of advice from other wineries as to best practice and they'd have a real winner! read more

My husband and I were in Maysville due to a death in our family. We had heard about the winery through a festival but had forgotten about it due to the distance from our home in Dayton. On Sunday we were packing to head home and everything seemed to be going wrong, when we saw a commercial for the Winery on KET. We decided to stop on our way out in hopes that it would brighten our day. The building is amazing. I can't believe how great it looks for its age. The worker, Jessica, was amazing and was such a happy person to be around. She instantly brightened our afternoon. We chose to do their flight of Top 5 Wines for $5.00. We asked to not taste the chambourcin because we have always hated the taste. The worker convinced us to try it and we are so glad we did. What an amazing holiday wine. She told us it would pair well with Christmas dinner and that she calls it a "Turkey Wine" and we couldn't agree more. We didn't leave without purchasing a bottle. During our tasting she gave us historical information and offered to walk us down to the cellar. She told us it was a sight we should not miss. Again, we were so glad we decided to go down. It was beautiful. I couldn't believe such a gem existed in Bracken County. We can't wait to visit again when they open the large tasting room in the late spring. My wife and I signed up for the winery's Prohibition Party which was held in June. It was one of the best evenings we have had. The winery did an excellent job in making the 1920's era party as realistic as possible--even having a police raid at the Speakeasy. After the Party, the dinner at the Beehive was delicious. A Horrible Disappointment! I probably should have been tipped off from the beginning when it took the owner several days to return my phone messages asking if we needed to schedule a tour... My husband & I booked a babysitter & drove over an hour to spend what we hoped would be a fun & romantic afternoon away. I am by no means a wine expert and don't think I had very high expectations. Just looking for a fun & comfortable environment to enjoy a wine tasting, and excited to hear there was live music. Even so, our afternoon at Baker Bird Winery was pretty awful. EVERYTHING about this place was a huge disappointment. We had a Groupon, which was a total rip off. Supposedly it was worth $30 but for that we received a "cheese plate" which consisted of some cheddar & white cheese cubes like the ones I give my kids from Kroger & Keebler crackers. The "deal" included logo wine glasses that were ridiculously small but no actual wine - we had to pay for the "tasting" with extremely skimpy pours - maybe half an ounce or 2 sips for each "tasting" - of 5 wines. If you don't have a logo glass the tastings are in small plastic cups. They don't clean your glass between wines & I was desperate for a sip of water - when I asked for some water they gave me again the skimpiest pour of maybe 1 oz. of water from a water bottle. What is with this place??? After the tasting, we followed their recommendation to buy a full glass to enjoy during the "tour." The "tour" is maybe 5-7 minutes around some very barren, very sad looking rooms with huge chunks of paint peeling off the walls, and laminated sheets about random facts of Cincinnati history and German immigrants that have little to nothing to do with wine or with Augusta, KY. Then we were asked if we wanted to buy a bottle of anything. There was nowhere to sit during the wine tasting - we had to stand at a makeshift counter, and the whole building was freezing. I would have liked to hear the guitarist but he was moving rooms due to the cold and when he started up again we had finished our wine & I had no desire to spend more money in this place. We had already spent over $40 out of pocket plus the drive & could have been having dinner at a cozy restaurant (with heat!) for that price instead. I was hoping for some relaxation, some touch of comfort, I have been to a couple of wineries before and loved the experience. This was just a falling apart old historic building that really needs some care to be restored, appears to have no actual grounds/vineyards and the prices were ridiculous. I saw a sign as we were leaving that they normally charge $10 for that "cheese plate" and $10 EACH for the "tour" - crazy. I thought the Groupon deal was a huge rip-off so I can't imagine paying the "normal" price. On a final note, most of the wine was very sweet & cheap tasting. Not impressed at all. Very frustrating and disappointing. If you want to learn some history, or have a relaxing afternoon with a friend or spouse, I highly recommend checking out another winery. I wish I had read the Yelp reviews before we went to the trouble of going there! Lesson learned! read more
