They also brought out a delicious baklava for my birthday. Everyone I took with me enjoyed their food as well and we all ordered different entrees. Ambiance is top tier! You definitely get the Mediterranean vibe when you dine here. The decor, the music, even the light fixtures are consistent with being in the Mediterranean. And the food only paled in comparison to the service. I'm not sure if Alvaro is the owner or related to the proprietor--it's obvious he LOVES his job, he was engaging and knowledgeable and his recommendations were spot on. He suggested the Mezze platter as our appetizer (I ended up eating it as my entire meal). He also was so animated and excited about the buttery sauce that was used in the process of making the lamb chops, we ordered both purely because he was so confident we would like them. And that is where he made his mistake--we didn't LIKE them; we LOVED them! The lamb was cooked to perfection. The appetizer platter was an explosion of flavors--and trust me, the falafel alone is worth the trip back. All too often, falafel is made with the premise that bigger is better. Falafel can taste gummy and dry if it made too large. Baladi had mastered the perfect falafel. They make them small, crunchy and flavorful. Hands down, it was my favorite. And then I tasted the babaganouush! Oh my, my, my! I didn't think the falafel had competition, but that babaganouush nearly melted in my mouth. I was car shopping and asked our salesman if he can recommend a place to eat and he suggested Baladi. It is located in a shopping strip, so there are plenty of parking spaces. Upon entering, I was greeted and quickly seated. We were given one of the benches against the wall. They were so comfortable. They must have been at least 4 inches of cushion. The restaurant has 2 dining areas and a little supermarket at the entrance. It is tastefully decorated with lots of macrame and other beautiful decor. There were many things in the menu that looked good. We decided to start with FUL & CHIPS. It was fava beans mashed with lemon olive oil with a jalapeño garnish, served with pita chips. So delicious! Next, we both ordered the SPICY SEAFOOD PLATTER. It was sautéed with the catch of the day, grouper and tuna, tabbouleh salad, basmati rice and drizzled with tahini sauce. Of my goodness! This was amazing! We asked for extra tahini sauce and wow! To end, we ordered for dessert CHOCOLATE AND DATE PIE. This was a pie in a small glass container. It had chocolate chunks on top. It was a pudding and the crust was at the bottom. It was very sweet, but good. We ate it all. I also ordered a CINNAMON-WALNUT BAKLAVA and it was drizzled in honey. Great portion and delish! The last thing we tried was their coffee. It came in a small cup. It was strong, but saw the coffee grinds mashed at the bottom into a paste. That was interesting. I guess that's how it is so strong, but good. Overall, it was a great experience. The one suggestion I have is that they don't sit people so close. When we were seated. There was a couple right next to us and I was hearing everything they were saying even if I tried to ignore them. Luckily, they were almost done. Then, while we were eating dessert, at 2 different times, 2 couples were seated next to us and asked to be moved. They have the space to seat people farther from each other and should do it. We visited Baladi Mediterranean Cafe last weekend with our family. We ordered two lamb chop platters and 10 shawarmas. The lamb chops were very good and were the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, the shawarmas were extremely disappointing. What was served did not resemble shawarma at all. Each plate seemed to consist of a large amount of lettuce, only a few small pieces of chicken, and a few grilled tomato halves. None of the 10 people in our group--including the children--enjoyed it. Everyone was surprised that this dish was being called shawarma. I also ordered an iced tea, but what I received tasted more like lemonade and did not seem to be iced tea at all. To make matters worse, our bill came to $626. Based on the quality and quantity of the food we received, I believe the meal was worth no more than $200. Another concern was that alcohol was being served on the premises, which may be important information for customers looking specifically for halal dining options. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. While the lamb chops were excellent, the rest of the meal and the value for the price fell far below expectations. Went here with my son. We were greeted and seated by our server quickly. The drinks were okay.. nothing special. I had the hibiscus Collins, very lackluster. We split our entree's. I had the lamb kebabs with grilled veggies. The lamb was cooked medium-rare as I had requested & was delicious. The veggies were a nice addition. My son had the Kufta meatballs (lamb & beef with herbs). They were tasty, but terribly dry. Our service was very good & the place was filling up as we were leaving. Updating my review based upon my recent dine-in experience. Service was pretty slow and bad - the price is expensive and I wasn't pleased with the food, service, or pace of the meal. My mother and I came in with a reservation for dinner at 6pm with my baby daughter (14 months). Our server seemed friendly enough and brought drinks and greeted us - another two tables were sat around the same time as us and I saw him greet them and take orders. We chose to split the Greek salad, a hummus entree (I asked for veggies instead of pita) and a chicken skewer meal. I wasn't too happy with the veggies for hummus - it was ALL green peppers, with a few radishes and like two tomatoes. No cucumbers and at the end I saw they charged me $3 for the veggies, which I couldn't eat bc I'm allergic to green peppers. If there was an up-charge for veggies, I should've been told when I asked about getting veggies instead of pita. I hate when servers don't tell you. It's not a lot of money, but it is the principle. Our server never came back to check on us, never offered any drink refills, which I needed, and in the end I had to complain to the host to tell him my mom was walking the parking lot with my baby while I tried to pay. The food was overpriced and the service was not good. I wasn't pleased with this experience and I was unhappy that it's the only time my mother and I were dining out while she was in town visiting. read more

What an incredible visit my wife and I had. You get a good feeling about a restaurant when you hear things like "That was good." I can see why this place is so popular. Sefer our server was excellent. He had served us on a prior visit and it was a nice touch that he recognized me. He's kind considerate, and gave great recommendations. I took my wife here for restaurant week and Baladi did NOT disappoint. They had a plethora of soup options and two entrée options. I ordered the chicken Shawermah and my wife ordered the same. I had the Kaila lamb soup and my wife ordered the chicken potato soup. Both of the soups were delicious, but I definitely had a preference for my wife's chicken and potato soup. It was excellent! The chicken was super tender and the taste of cardamom sent my tastebuds into ecstasy. Shortly after our soups came our entrées were on our table. I was mesmerized by the plating. I could immediately tell that the chef gave great care to the placement of each ingredient. This was the first time in a long time that I smiled after taking a bite of food. The flavors married together incredibly! The entrees came with pita bread and refills were free. The portion size was great and I was pleased that I had half to take home and enjoy. For $20 a person this is a deal that's hard to beat. This deal is a gem for restaurant week and Baladi is a gem for the Hampton Roads area. I 100% recommend! read more

This is one of my new favorite spots I was looking for a good sit down Mediterranean restaurant to get some falafel from we had spent the day at the world cultural festival that was held at the convention center and we had several delicious samples but they made us crave a good falafel and my friend had never had baba ghanouj so we were on a mission lol. We used Yelp to find Baladi which was less than 15min away from the oceanfront now I have to warn you that when you find this place you will be tempted to try every restaurant in this shopping center we parked and realized we were surrounded by several delicious restaurants like Korean fried chicken and Ramon. But we stuck to our guns and ventured In to baladi It was beautiful just gorgeous inside the atmosphere the decor it was so pretty We had a round of drinks first they were very well priced and tasty the licorice highball was unexpectedly my favorite We ordered the appetizers and all expectations were exceeded the falafel literally melted as you bit into it a perfect texture For entrees we had the lamb and beef meatballs and the fried cheese and tomato caprese The tomatoes were so flavorful and the sauce they used on the meatballs was savory and sweet all at once We ended on a dessert the lovely waitress recommended at first we were thrown off at how small the serving seemed but it was rich and tasted elegant the staff and service here was so kind and the waitress had such genuine smiles we were very impressed and will be back read more

Definitely recommend! The food tasted fresh and delicious. My husband and I were very excited to try the food at Baladi and were happy that they had so many vegan and vegetarian options. We were especially excited about the vegan baklava! I love baklava, but haven't been able to enjoy it since I developed a dairy allergy 10 years ago. My husband has an allergy to honey, so he usually can't enjoy baklava either because of the honey present. However, this restaurant makes an almond vegan baklava option that uses organic syrup and no butter. The baklava was warm, nutty, sweet and delicious. For my dinner, I ordered the Falafel supreme wrap with basmati rice on the side. The basmati rice was seasoned with saffron, cinnamon, and golden raisins. This is a combination that I haven't tried before, but it was very tasty and I really enjoyed it. The falafel supreme wrap tasted super fresh and flavorful. Our server Seren was wonderful and checked in on us often to make sure that we were enjoying our meals and had everything that we needed. The Arabic music playing in the restaurant was a vibe! I pulled out my phone out to Shazam the songs and will be adding them to my playlist! I also loved the decor! My grandfather is Palestinian, and some of the decor reminded me of my visits to my grandfather's home, where he had a lot of Arabic and Palestinian decor on the walls. In addition to cozy booths inside the restaurant, I saw that intimate outdoor seating is available as well. It was very busy, even though we went towards the end of the evening and we understand why! We are definitely going to frequent this restaurant. It's far from where my husband and I live but it's worth the drive for special occasions and special date nights. I came to Baladi Med Cafe just to grab lunch. I ordered a salad,a wrap and the meatballs. I can't really say much for the food because i didn't really eat the food that they serve. You can't really mess up a salad and a wrap. The meatballs were ok. The service wasn't really anything special. In total i paid $77 for for a salad, wrap and meatballs. I personally thing that's expensive however i paid and because the service wasn't really special i didn't tip. I am from Europe where we don't really tip so coming to America were that is a thing was definitely a cultural shock for me. What surprised me even more was the waitress. She saw that i didn't tip and in response had an attitude and said " don't come to a f*cking restaurant if you are not going to tip". This was shocking to me cause i've never experienced that before. Not only was she rude; immediately after i left the restaurant, i felt extremely sick and threw up everything i ate there. I was so sick and couldn't even go to work. Worst takeout experience of my life. Lamb shawarma with extra lamb, Greek salad and the mezze "platter" $90. Picked up my order and when I got home realized I must be missing something. I ordered extra lamb shawarma and didn't even have what should be a normal amount. Then I saw that my "platter" for 1-2 people contained 1 grape leaf, 1 falafel and hummus in small cups you put condiments in. When I went back to pick up more shawarma I asked how this is possible and was told the platter only comes with one of each item. The front desk girl (who is not at fault but had no clue about the menu) left and the other staff were talking about me within sight and hearing as if I wasn't there, until the manager came out. The manager argued about how the platter is a small, for 1-2 people to share; so I asked if I'm supposed to take a bite of each item then give the other half to the other person. A $20 "platter" that you can't share is not a platter at all but, she could not grasp this concept. I already had to drive all the way back for the minuscule amount of lamb that they provided, that I should have had to begin with. When I asked about the appetizer platter they refused to acknowledge that it's not a platter for two to share at all, despite saying that herself, and not realizing there's no ability to share. The manager refused a refund and argued rather than admit any fault on their part whatsoever. Not only was this incredibly overpriced, you get nothing and in the end none of it even tasted good. Messing up takeout seems to be a theme in the reviews and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless you want to overpay for crap and be treated poorly. read more

Amazing food! Awesome vibe! The restaurant is clean and designed well. Vegans are very welcome here. There's pleanty of vegan options and all that we tried are delicious! The falafel encrusted tofu (yes omg wtf) SO GOOD! That will be my go-to order. Our sever told us the falafel is made to order, fresh! The hibiscus ice tea is so refreshing (slightly sweetened). We ordered the Mezze Plater with fresh veggies instead of bread (gf option). All that is pictured was split between two people with pleanty of left overs. Baladi is one of those rare gems where the food consistently shines. My absolute favorite dish is the chicken and potato soup, served over spiced rice (with what I think is a subtle cinnamon note), it's perfectly balanced, deeply flavorful, and comfort in a bowl. I could eat it every day. The food here is always fresh, always delicious, and the portions are generous. The salads are crisp and customizable, they'll happily swap in oil and vinegar if that's your thing. And the morning tea, a sweet, soothing blend of turmeric, ginger, lemon, and honey, is absolutely worth trying. I love that you can even buy it in their market to take home. Service is usually good. It's not flawless, occasionally there are small hiccups, but the staff is kind and accommodating, and the quality of the food more than makes up for it. The ambiance is relaxed and welcoming. I came here for lunch during the week. They have good lunch specials including veggie and vegan options. I was sat right away and I absolutely loved the decor. It felt very simple and mediterranean. I think they might even have some private rooms in the back - it's open but looked like they could close the doors so you could have a private party. I had a Chicken Shawermah wrap with a cous cous salad. It tasted very fresh and authentic. I wish I had tried the hummus but I think I assumed there might be a little on the plate. Next time I will try it. Service was great and very friendly. I absolutely loved the market!!! The prices were very reasonable and such a great way to get authentic mediterranean food. I have gotten a lot of recommendations from friends to try this place out, especially when I have my fave go to Mediterranean restaurant on Witch Duck Road (equally good and the difference is just ambiance, really - Baladi is slightly upscale, better for dates). My friend was already waiting at the bar when I got there. I could see she was showered with plenty of great service, her drinks flowing, friendly chatter going. We both sat at a nice booth in the corner and chatted away; the staff was super patient coming back multiple times when we got lost in conversation not having had the time to look the menu over. Now to the food - I ordered their ahi tuna with couscous. Fresh ingredients, rightly spiced...my friend ordered the fish of the day. The portions were generous. We ordered 3 desserts - I highly recommend the kunafa where you get shaved phyllo dough baked with cheese and pistachio sprinkles (check out my photos!) baklava and date cake were a 3 stars, with baklava was so stringently served in small portion. read more

Last night was the third time that our to go order has been messed up. Delicious food! Amazing salads! If you eat meat, put the chicken shawarma on there (it's well seasoned and juicy). If you are vegetarian, that lentil patty is AMAZING! Salad dressing is delicious as well! The way they flavor it and season it, it's delicious! Downsaide (only downside), I usually add a few other bits on the salad which makes this salad a bit more on the expensive side (they do charge a bit much for additional toppings but- it's delicious and large salad). Overall, GREAT great food and so much variety on the menu, especially for vegetarians who get VERY tired of being served falafel as a salad or main dish add on. read more
