Wow !!!! If you're a foodie who loves to eat or cook this place is fantastic. Such a wonderful selection of ingredients and unique items. We were traveling so I wasn't able to buy fresh, but the butcher shop was to die for. Lots of interesting and unusual non food items to. They had a cafe to dine in and I would suggest you do so !!! This is a review of the steak restaurant associated with the Balgove Larder. If the two establishments are separate, I'll happily amend this review. Tonight is the first night of graduation week in St. Andrews. Families are celebrating their graduates. They are looking for a memorable meal to mark the occasion. Having a negative experience can have the opposite effect. The Steak Barn provided just the underwhelming experience tonight. Fortunately five others in a seven person party enjoyed their food. The worst part of the meal was the flat iron steak. The cut was under done, even when I sent it back. The cut was chewy and tough, not what I expected from 20 gbp steak (~$30). Management needs to step in a control quality and provide more training to their young staff. Maybe they just had a bad night. It happens. Having a bad night on a special occasion is less forgivable. read more

This weary traveler made a beeline for Balgove Larder upon arrival in St. Andrews and while I have only been here for 15 minutes I still strongly recommend. So many delightful provisions to stock up with, and a cafe to fortify oneself until check in time! I ordered the steak pie - simple and filling. The seasonal vegetables were wilted greens. GO TO THEIR STEAK BARN! Don't walk, RUN! This is the coolest concept, we absolutely loved it!! It is literally a giant barn, and there is a black curtain that you walk through to an open room of amazingness. They have loads of community tables, GREAT food, yummy drinks, and all around good vibes. This was such a fun place for kiddos and also to come as a group. I would highly recommend, especially if you're a steak lover! We had their meat and cheese board, truffle parmesan fries (YAAAAS!), and a grilled tomato. I wish that I was hungry enough for steak but we had a large lunch so weren't super hungry. You better believe i'll be back for that! read more

A St Andrews staple. When friends or family ask me for recommendations in St Andrews, Balgove Larder is always at the top of my list! First of all, it is quite literally 'farm to table'. The indoor restaurant/cafe and steak barn look onto sheep and cows. The steak barn is infamous for their delicious burgers and truffle fries. I don't think they have a full bar, but they do serve beer, wine and bottled Eden Mill cocktails. They do a lovely cheese board that is a great starter for the table. What makes Balgove Larder incredibly special is the fact that everything is locally sourced from all over Scotland. They have an adorable shop where you can buy cheeses, meats, jams, soaps and so much more. I could go on and on about what this place has to offer, but words just don't do it justice. Here are some of my tips for a perfect day at Balgove: 1. If possible, choose a sunny day to go for the best experience. 2. Once again if the weather permits, do not take a taxi there! Instead enjoy a lovely walk along the golf course. I believe it is about 15 minutes from North street. 3. Make sure the steak barn is open, I know their hours can be a bit iffy sometimes. 4. If you plan on exploring the grounds do not wear shoes you value! It can be pretty muddy. Enjoy your visit! read more

The perfect lunch spot - have been going here for years and always great. Alastair is perfectly exceptional - a lovely personality, professional and makes the difference in the experience. Shannon was incredibly inefficient, rude and our experience with her service was reason for 4/5. The food is excellent - usually a nice soup, the steak pie is a favourite. DO NOT ORDER, however, the Ploughman Salad - it is a mismatched plate of what appears to be remnants of things left in the kitchen. Instead order the steak pie, any of their scones and be sure to have the brownie in chocolate sauce with icecream! It is a shame they are not open later for dinner, as this is the perfect spot, just slightly out of town. read more

Great place to hang out. Staff was very friendly and food was very very tasty. We had to wait 30 minutes to get a table but that wasn't a problem because we're we're able to get done drinks and hang outside while waiting for a table. Ordered some appetizers that were amazing. Found out about this place while we were at Eden Brewery for a beer tasting event. There is a Steak Shack on site which serves tasty tasty meat in a giant shed.. not the warmest place to sit on a slightly blowy day, but the onion rings were worth it! The actual larder store is amazing, stocked with all sorts of tasty treats from cordials to gin, fresh meat to spice rubs.. it really could be a one stop shop! If only we had a car, I probably would've bought the entire store.. so it's probably a good thing we didn't have a car... read more

A great market for finding a specialty food or beer. Cheeses, meats, gourmet spices, etc....the fresh breads looked delicious and if you get hungry walking around the market just head over the the barn next door. A special Scottish experience . The store has fresh local produce, meats and hand crafted Scottish gifts. You can purchase the local Eden Mill Golf Gin or whiskey to take home. We did not eat in the restaurant but later in the steak barn. My husband and I decided to split the sirloin and ordered the chicken kabobs as a starter. Large tender portion. We also added the fresh spinach and onion rings. Plan to make this an annual tradition when visiting our student in St Andrews. read more
