I understand it may not be a Scottish thing to put ketchup on your fish and chips, but when you are located in a highly tourist town like St. Andrew's I know we were not the only ones asking for ketchup. Our server only came back when he was at the kitchen when we asked. We were finally given a double amount because of asking. But he didn't return until we were done and our fish was cold by the time we got more ketchup.

It was everything you would want- tender steak, rich gravy, well cooked potatoes and peas. Service was good as well, so no complaints for our visit on any front. Atmosphere was lively and tables are close enough to strike up a conversation with your neighbor. Back in the states now and only wishing we could stop by for another pie.

Tonight is the first night of graduation week in St. Andrews. Families are celebrating their graduates. They are looking for a memorable meal to mark the occasion. Having a negative experience can have the opposite effect. The Steak Barn provided just the underwhelming experience tonight. Fortunately five others in a seven person party enjoyed their food. The worst part of the meal was the flat iron steak. The cut was under done, even when I sent it back. The cut was chewy and tough, not what I expected from 20 gbp steak (~$30). Management needs to step in a control quality and provide more training to their young staff. Maybe they just had a bad night. It happens. Having a bad night on a special occasion is less forgivable.

Less than a 10-minute drive from the touristy bustle of St Andrews, it seemed ideal for our lunch stop. The wait for a table for 4 at the Steak House was 45 minutes, which we agreed to and happily wandered around the farm shop to kill time. After we were seated, however, the REAL waiting game began. The menu is simple, with basically 4 different cuts of steak available and a burger option, so it didn't take us long to decide we'd all go for rib eye steaks. It took the server 10 minutes to come back and take our orders, and another 15 minutes after that for our drinks to arrive. That wasn't the worst part... our meals (nothing fancy - 4 grilled steaks on wooden boards with chips) took another HOUR after that!! Nobody checked on us while we were waiting to apologise for the delay, or ask if we wanted to order more drinks. We sat there with empty glasses, having nursed our beers as long as humanly possible. In summary, we arrived at 12:45pm, seated by 1:30pm and weren't served our meals until 3pm. It was absolutely ridiculous and unfortunately I just didn't feel that the management/staff did enough to make up for it to warrant a return trip for me.

They are good like I said l, but I wish the tomato sauce had a bit more kick and you had the possibility to get sour cream, guacamole, or vegetarian toppings.
