I own a sailboat that has a mast and antennas just tall enough to scrape the underside of the Ballard Bridge (43 feet). This requires that I hail the bridge tender and request a bridge opening. I am a very responsible boat owner/operator and refuse to jeopardize both my boat and the bridge by trying to squeeze underneath. This would also create a huge traffic problem for all of the cars above.
There is a certain bridge tender who has an axe to grind about sailboats and refuses to lift the bridge after respectful and numerous requests from various boat owners. He is failing to do his job and continues to create safety issues to boaters on either side of the Ballard Bridge. This is an issue that needs to be addressed.
In my experience there are six times when this bridge tender (who almost always has the Sunday late afternoon/evening shift) has refused to lift the bridge for me, refusing to answer my VHF requests (via ch 13). Once he finally lifts the bridge, after a longer-than-needed wait, he shouts over the loudspeaker on the bridge "SAILBOAT....CLEARANCE IS 44 FEET. YOUR MAST IS SHORT ENOUGH TO GO UNDER!" I KNOW how tall my mast is, and I will NOT put my boat in jeopardy just because this guy has some strange issue about doing his job.
I have many friends who are sailors and have found out that they too have been either refused a bridge opening and/or shouted at by this same Ballard bridge tender about their mast height. What is his problem? He clearly has an issue with raising the bridge for sailboats, but isn't that his job?
One recent evening this bridge tender refused to answer my VHF question about an ETA for the bridge opening, keeping me motoring my sailboat in circles next to the bridge for 30 minutes. I'm sure he loved the sight of that. I signaled the bridge via horn three times, and made three appropriate, proper and polite requests via ch 13 on my VHF. He refused to answer me. Finally he did get on the VHF and asked me what the make of my sailboat was. I replied and he paused (looking up the specs?) and then shouted back to me over ch 13 "Your mast isn't that high. You SHOULD be able to make it!" What the...? I replied "I have two antennas that will scrape the bridge, and request a bridge opening. Thank you." No response, but many minutes later the bridge opened and I hurried under, lest he change his mind. Finally, as I went under he angrily shouted something at me through the bridge speaker in a sharp tone. I didn't understand it so I hailed him on ch 13 and said "Did not understand your communication. Please repeat. Over" He said nothing. I repeated my request to hear what he said and nothing. He clearly heard my request to repeat his comment but refused. Was he too afraid to repeat his snide comment? What kind of bridge operator is this? Why the attitude? If you hate raising the bridge for sailboats...GET ANOTHER JOB.
I know over SEVEN sailboat owners who are getting crap from this bridge tender whose job it is to simply OPEN the bridge. If he's so troubled by the basic requirements of his job, then he needs to move on and NOT create delays and boat back-ups in the canal - a site of heavy boat traffic. This situation needs to be addressed, so if you have had this issue, please call the City of Seattle and speak to his boss, Mary Brown, Bridge Operations Supervisor at 206.386.4208.
It has become a safety issue - clogging canal traffic just because he doesn't want to open the bridge for sailboats that he "thinks can make it under". This man needs to be removed from his job. read more
