Top Notch! The BDC staff took my wife and I from almost no experience to a choreographed first dance that has defined for our peers what a first dance ought to be. We still hear from our friends excuses for why their first dance won't be on par with ours! We began taking lessons ~3-4 months before our wedding, on average 1-2 times/week. The BDC staff were attentive to our goals and expectations, which involved establishing set choreography for our first dance (versus learning general dance skills; see below). Notably, the choreography included a number of moves they predicted would be crowd pleasers; our guests ooh'd and ah'd, clapped and cheered almost as if on cue. Our lessons focused progressively from learning the basic steps to refining the styling (including details as fine as where to look at different points during a move). We found that the instructors can be about as hardcore as you'd like, and they were particularly good at troubleshooting and correcting our mistakes. Since then, I've enthusiastically continued taking private lessons with them, many on my own, and some with my wife, at present adding Country Two-Step and Country Waltz to our repertoire. A particularly helpful teaching strategy they use is to apply moves/patterns you've learned in one dance to other dances, which has helped me quickly develop a useful foundation in a number of dance styles. Particular advantages at BDC include plenty of free parking and proximity to Brown Line and several bus lines. The studio is spacious, and their sound system is controlled wirelessly by the instructor (no running back and forth to the CD player). The staff, as noted above, are inviting, patient, and quite skilled. I can think of no disadvantages. Having taken classes at 3 other Chicago-area studios, I am happy that I chose to spend the bulk of my time at BDC. I have, without reservation, recommended BDC to my friends. read more

So, no doubt you've perused the Ballroom Dance Chicago reviews and seen eleventy-something of them saying something along the lines of "If BDC can teach my finacee and I to dance, they can teach anyone!" Stop it. These people are lying. How do I know? Because if Ballroom Dance Chicago was able to teach MY fiancee and *I* how to dance, they really can teach anyone. I'm serious. Kathryn taught us and was an absolute joy to work with. She was so friendly and supportive that it was like learning from an old friend. In no time, we went from dreading learning how to dance to looking forward to the lessons and having a lot of fun there. It's literally the only part of prepping for the wedding that we actually miss. Kathryn designed a dance that was exactly what we'd hoped for- not choreographed (so we couldn't blow it and forget what we were doing partway through) and simple enough for our collective four left feet. She taught us some beautiful basic steps and wove in some wonderful highlights tied to key parts of our song. We received so many compliments and couldn't have been happier. We've always considered trying to learn salsa dancing and would be thrilled to go back to Kathryn and Ballroom Dance Chicago to make that happen. read more

My husband and I took dance lessons here with Cathy before the wedding. Our goal was to not have a boring first dance and also have fun. We had taken a few lessons at other places before over the years and they were meh. When we got engaged, I started researching more and found BDC. Cathy took us in and worked through everything we threw at her. I had delusions of pulling off a fast-paced cha cha to Dinah Washington's "Relax Max", and you know what? Cathy believed in us. She was going to take on that challenge. Once we started dancing, we quickly realized we are horrid. I can't follow, the hubs can't lead, and we had a short engagement. So reality hit and we changed our song to Miguel's "Adorn". Tried that out a couple of weeks and then decided, ugh this is too slow and not exciting enough. So we CHANGED OUR SONG AGAIN to Justin Timberlake's "My Love" about 2 months before the wedding. Cathy was an absolute doll and never got frustrated with us, always stayed positive, and choreographed our dance from start to finish (three times). The thing I liked most was that Cathy always kept in mind what our "wants" were from the beginning and modified them to fit our skill level, which resulted in a mixture of cha cha, swing, and rumba, to a song we love. We had an absolute blast learning with Cathy and it made our first dance amazingly fun and very "us." We hope to start back up in the summer just for fun now that the wedding frenzy is over. BONUS: One of my favorite memories of the experience was dancing cha cha to Lil Wayne's "Mrs. Officer". Seriously, no words to describe the awesomeness of that. read more

We took lessons from Szewai (and some from Matthew) to prepare for our wedding. I can't say enough awesome things about this studio and the teachers. I could seriously write 2000 words about how much I love BDC if I had the time. Not only are the teachers great at teaching you how to dance, but they are fabulous people who I love seeing every week. My husband and I studied the rumba and smooth swing for 4 months prior to our wedding. The lessons were totally worth it, we looked AMAZING during our first dance... standing ovation amazing. Look no further! Ballroom Dance Chicago is the place for dance lessons in Chicago. My husband and I took lessons here in preparation for our June 25th wedding. After a few months of weekly lessons, we were confident in our steps and had the opportunity to "perform" (rather than remember a rehearsed routine) at our wedding with our first dance. Our parents, family and friends were so surprised and wowed. It was a highlight of our day. I work in the loop and had communicated with a few studios to compare locations and styles when we first were looking to take lessons. Ballroom Dance was the only studio that was so warm, friendly and accommodating! Szewai invited us in for a complimentary lesson. We were greeted with wine and snacks and had a fabulous time learning a few first steps. From there, we scheduled lessons just about once a week. We were surprised how quickly we learned to dance. The instructors are fabulous. They each have their own style, but all have relaxed, patient and fun personalities. We laughed so much as we learned! We really enjoyed rotating lessons with instructors -- at first, we danced with Szewai, then sometimes with Matthew or Marc. Not having the same instructor each week actually gave us the opportunity to learn differently, and we benefited from the amazing talents of all three people. For the majority of the second half of our lessons, we had Marc every week. Marc is amazing! Our dance was a mix of traditional rhumba which transitioned into a fun and upbeat "hip hop" routine. Marc helped us customize the upbeat portion of the dance to match our personalities and styles. In the end, our first dance at our wedding was perfect and is a lasting memory for us and our guests. Dance lessons was such a fun part of our wedding preparations and planning. It gave us a weekly time to enjoy learning as a couple and became our week day "date night"! My wife and I took some lessons before our wedding and we can't say enough great things. We took the wedding crash course and we gotta say that we loved it. We were nervous at first because the only dancing we've done lately is around the kitchen table to the refrigerator door. Matthew, one of the owners, is the instructor we've been primarily working with, and he's great. He always offers delicious wine at the start of each class, and there's always fun snacks out -- it makes for a very inviting and laid back environment. For our wedding, we told him what our first dance song was going to be, and he is helping us develop a dance to go along with it so that we don't just stand there and sway back and forth (which was the original plan). As someone who has been mocked by his friends for his entire life for having no rhythm, I approached dancing lessons with a healthy dose of skepticism. More so because my wife (fiance at the time) had been dancing her entire life, and had tried to teach me the most basic steps without success. I expected to be labeled hopeless by the dance instructor, and leave each lesson feeling even worse about myself than when I went in. Boy was I wrong! I walked out of our 30 minute complimentary lesson feeling pretty good about myself. Szewai was honest in her assessment of my skill, but managed to teach me a few steps on the very first day. Both my fiance and I were very excited to return! Throughout the 10 or so lessons we took, I found Szewai to be a wonderful teacher. She was equally skilled at teaching a complete rookie like myself and my fiance who has been dancing since she was a little girl. I found the pace of our lessons to be right on target as well. I never felt overwhelmed, and I learned something new every day. By the end of the lessons, we had a great outline for the first dance at our wedding. The big day went great! My wife and I chose Ballroom Dance for our dance lessons mainly due to the studio's location and proximity to where we live and boy did we luck out. Rachael is a kind, patient and extremely knowledgeable instructor who we look forward to seeing at our weekly lesson. We came to Ballroom looking for help with our first dance at our wedding and they came up with a wonderful dance for us that incorporated a box step , foxtrot, as well as swing all into one dance! This was not some cheesy choreographed dance that I have seen at other weddings but an elegant and timeless dance that my wife and I were very happy with. We will be able to use each step we learned for that dance at future weddings as well. We enjoyed our lessons so much that we continue to go even after the wedding and are currently learning to waltz and salsa. We love to use our sessions as an excuse for a date night, a chance to get out and dance and have a nice dinner together. We cannot say enough great things about Ballroom Dance Chicago. My wife and I were hesitant about creating a first dance for our wedding, but are so glad that we stopped in at BDC. Matthew and the team won us over from day one and our dance nights were by far the most enjoyable activity leading into the wedding. We worked with Matthew who partnered with us to create a dance unique to us that we both loved and which also stylistically matched our song choice. We went 2x per week for about 2-3 months and we're ready and prepared for wedding day. The atmosphere is really friendly, welcoming to all dance abilities (I have two left feet), and they even offer snacks (pretzels/jelly beans) and/or adult beverage to put the cherry on top. They offer wedding showcases to practice dancing in front of others (was really helpful) and always are planning/doing fun social events for their clients. Matthew even went above and beyond by suggesting a local wedding boutique to my wife when she was struggling to find her shoes and jewelry - which she then went to and found everything she needed! Ballroom Dance Chicago will help all of you soon-to-be husbands out there score some major points with your wives / husbands. The instructor team is knowledgable, welcoming and ready to put in the time to make sure you are confident and comfortable throughout the process. We worked with Cathy and she was beyond extraordinary! So here's the scoop - I don't dance well. I think I light it up, but after you hear from 100+ people that your dance moves are neither dancing, nor moves, it's time to reevaluate letting it loose on the dance floor. My wife wanted us to take dance lessons so we would always remember our first dance. In retrospect, I know she just didn't want to be embarrassed by having to dance with me without some guidance and training. We signed up for 10 lessons leading up to the big day. At first, you learn more of the fundamentals. Then, your instructor starts building a dance to the song you selected. Lucky for us, we chose one of the weirdest songs with a truly unique tempo (Monsoons by Puscifer), which only made the process more rewarding. As the leader of the dance, I had to spend extra time working on the transitions and getting the structure correct, but it was well worth it. We killed it on the big day and our wedding party was completely baffled by our (really, my) dance moves. Cathy was an absolute saint! She was patient, caring and very passionate. We could tell that she spent so much of her time on making our dance special. We we are so grateful to have her as our instructor and friend! Although we were married in September, we have not yet been back to BDC. You all know how the madness continues after the wedding, and we're still working through that. I found Ballroom Dance Chicago on Yelp a few months before my wedding. My fiance and I wanted some help with our first dance and decided to give BDC a try. We worked with Matthew and would highly recommend him. BDC is a great studio, in an easy location, with good parking. Matthew was very flexible with lesson times and accommodated our schedules. We came about six times before the wedding (we will be returning for more :) We were so amazed by how much we learned from Matthew so quickly. Even after our first lesson, we had learned a lot and already felt much more confident. Ballroom Dance Chicago (BDC) was the icing on our wedding cake dance wise. I can't recommend this place enough. Lesson Space: BDC is located in converted industrial type building next to the Irving Park brown line. The space is huge and easily accommodates 6-8 couples taking lessons. There are massive painting on the walls and a cool seating area near the front door. They offer complimentary refreshments before and during your lesson (beer, water, wine, jelly beans, etc) to keep your energy up or your inhibitions down. Occasionally the space gets warm but that's to be expected when you're dancing. Instructor: Lydia was amazing. I don't know how they pair couples with instructors but it's some sort of magic because Lydia was the perfect fit for us. She created a brilliant dance for the wedding and kept everything at idiot speed until things started clicking in our heads. She is the reason we are continuing to take lessons. Price: Ok, it's a bit pricey but definitely worth it. A few days before the wedding during our last session they presented a deal where if we booked another set of lessons we would get a discount. Unfortunately, we were tapped out paying for the wedding and couldn't swing another set of 10 lessons but we liked them so much that when we finally recovered from the big day, we purchased another set. Overall: Glad to have found this place and am looking forward to learning all sorts of dances in the future! read more

Ballroom Dance Chicago was exactly what we needed to be prepared for our first dance! I went into the whole experience with some anxiety, and my husband went in with dance experience, but also expecting perfection of himself. After a few lessons with Lydia, we felt much more at ease. While our dance itself wasn't "perfect" as far as technical elements go, it was perfect for us. It was a moment we enjoyed, and will remember forever, I know without our lessons it would have been a stressful moment. We just got our pictures back and our expressions reflect that. Ballroom Dance Chicago is the best! We originally joined to learn our first dance and haven't left! Matthew and his are all very knowledgeable and personable. We've taken both private and group lessons and also have attended the spring and fall dance galas which all are extremely fun. We've made new friends since we started and have learned a lot.
