What can I say about this poor restaurant? I feel very badly for people who go there spending this kind of money. The food is extremely average and they cater to silver haired people that live in the area who want their food, extremely bland and prepared as though it was still 1986. The oyster mushrooms as an entrée, for example, were laid out on a plate with a garnish of parsley for close to $40. The fish that I had ordered was presented to me as though it was massacred and two extra plates containing the potatoes, and the vegetables were strew about the table with barely enough room to put a glass of water. That was another $40. About the tastiest thing there was the potatoes which were a bit on the acidic side because they must've been soaking all night and some salty, lemony brine. Didn't try any of the desserts but when I ordered my tea, they didn't even bother bringing extra water and provided me with a tea cup of hot water with my chamomile tea. I didn't see how clean the bathrooms were, but I noticed that this place wasn't the cleanest either. I suppose if you have $150 to spend for one person and you're bored and you have nowhere else to eat. I guess you can come eat here and be full because the portions are large. Kind of like what you you'd find in certain areas of Florida. But honestly people keep your money and go elsewhere. Montreal is packed with the restaurants way better than this at half the price and just to give you an idea Marcus which actually has a one star from Michelin is a bit less expensive and way way better. Of course you're looking at a different class of people, but I wouldn't tell the people who go to Balos this, or they probably claim discrimination. Either way, avoid this place at all costs about the only thing good was the service. Also, the wine list is not that good and the glass of wine that I ordered came from a bottle that must've been sitting outside for a couple of hours because it was warm and when I mentioned it to the waiter, he didn't even mention anything and walked away. The only reason I'm giving this three stars instead of two is because of the staff who are clearly there to please people if only they knew they could live a better life working elsewhere. I'd say that would be my only wish. The owner of this restaurant ought to move on, and open a retirement facility where he can reopen the restaurant inside that facility where he would be happy, probably live there as well, and live with his patrons in a fantasy world. read more

We came here on a Saturday night at around 9. The place was already full when we got there, alot of noise and groups. Our waitress was really nice and knew the menu and gave us some suggestions. A each got a glass of white wine, it was good. We shared a Greek salad and the vegetable chips. We really loved the vegetable chips, it was zucchinis and eggplant with tsatiki sauce. This came after 10 mins of ordering which was nice. We had also ordered the seabass which was 70$ although on the menu it said 58$, I'm not quite sure why we were charged more. I felt like the main dish very fast, we hadn't even finished our entree, I felt like we didn't get a chance to take a break before starting our main dish, the dish came with Greek potatoes and some bland veggies. I felt like we were rushed at the end because we were the only table left other then one more. We were basically there for about 1:30, usually when we go to fine dining restaurants we usually stay for about 2-3 hours. We also noticed that everyone that was finishing there meal was offered a hot towel to clean there hands but we were never offered. Ambience is lovely. We had a nice table near the door by a large bay window. Service was excellent and they were very friendly and helpful. My friend was having hip surgery the next day. The front door has a tricky step up to the door and directly into a wall of curtains which were awkward with Walker. We had spanakopita to start which we both enjoyed. We both decided on a smoked salmon salad as it was already after 2:30 for lunch. Smoked salmon was good and also plentiful but salad was very humdrum. It was 98% chopped romaine with I think some capers (very little taste so not sure) and although I prefer a salad with little dressing, the one on it was maybe just a bit of oil? It had no taste. Desert was also bizarre. They only had one piece of pastry left so it was cut in half so we could both have some and a complementary small plate of fruit was provided. I question "complimentary " as no reduction was provided and we had both had the 3 course special. I would try the restaurant again with something different on the menu . The best part was the waitress and most importantly, seeing my friend after so many years so I didn't let these details ruin anything! read more

It could be better, unfortunately. Balos is a restaurant unsure of its identity. For elevated Greek cuisine, Montrealers have many options. The menus are very similar across establishments. You have Greek salads, grilled vegetables, fish sold by the pound, fried eggplant and zucchini, and grilled octopus to name a few. Balos is trying to be considered in the upper tier of these restaurants like Milos or Ikanos. At least that's where the prices on the menu hover. Salads are 20-25$, a small plate of sliced octopus is 36$, fresh fish is easily 50$/person, and a plate of lamb chops is 46$. At those prices, you expect an impeccable fine dining experience. Instead, the vibe is more of a simple neighbourhood bistro/eatery. Our meal started with some complimentary dinner rolls which were warm. They give you a small plate of oil and balsamic to dip. It was fine, but there was nothing particularly Greek about it. How about some grilled pita or bread with oregano? That would have been more fitting. Compared to Lezvos/Molyvos or Mythos, the grilled octopus portion was small. This was unfortunate given the unjustified high price. The spanikopita was not nearly crispy enough nor was it bursting with dark green spinach. It seemed limp and slightly grey. The lamb chops ( which I had also ordered for takeout a month earlier) were quite large but unfortunately tasted distinctly like lighter fluid on both occasions. A Greek restaurant which prides itself upon simple yet fresh ingredients lives and dies based upon the quality of their grill. Something is clearly amiss here. My wife's scallops were tasty but again overpriced at 42$ for 4 scallops each the size of a toonie. Vegetables served with the food were steamed. Our waiter was very friendly and gave each of us a shot of sweet tentura for free at the end of the meal. Service was quick and attentive. That said, there are several neighbourhood restaurants that serve this same food at a better price without the mishaps. I know they are open across from Westmount Square and are hoping to get business from the residents there. Fortunately for them, there were quite a few people there on a Saturday night. There is an undeniable convenience factor at play here. I don't think Balos would do as well if located on Park ave. I don't see it as destination dining. I hope they are nevertheless successful given that they aren't delivering on the luxury/fancy night out aspect that is missing at this price point. read more

We discovered Balos 2 years ago while we were in town for the F1. We had a great experience so we went back. Even though they were full, the owner accommodated me and my daughter comfortably at the bar. We ordered the tzatziki. My daughter is a difficult eater but when she tasted this she was sold. She loved it. Warm pita and fresh tzatziki. What else do you want. They also got her a fully dressed up Shirley temple. My main course was the halibut. Perfectly cooked. My daughter had a salad with some extra chicken on it. We all loved it. Great atmosphere. Great food. We shall be back next year! read more

Was introduced to Balos by a group of friends that haven't stopped raving about this restaurant. All I can say, is that Balos didn't disappoint. Every morsel from start to finish was served to perfection and by far one of the best Greek restaurants I've been to in Montreal. Can't wait to bring my friends and family. read more

Another wonderful evening at Balos. Bobby and staff delivered a culinary experience that is in two words "world class". The food exceeds value even at this price point. As someone who has frequented many top line restaurants in North America, Balos, without the celebrity chef driven spin, needs to be established as destination dining for Montreal. I was so excited for my first indoor dinning since Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted. I walk past this restaurant often and it's popular among the locals. Reservations were made for 2 indoors at 6:15pm. Upon arrival to a practically empty restaurant. They tried placing us in the back near the bathroom explaining they are expecting large groups - no large groups ever came. Then tried placing us outside, near the sidewalk. That should have been my cue to walk out. Finally, they told us we can pick any table- why didn't they give us a proper one to being with especially since we made reservations! The service was subpar, the grilled octopus had a fishy seafood smell, and the spanakopita was dry and tasted like it was reheated several times. We ordered the sea bass for two, I swear it was the skinniest fish good enough for 1, the side greek potatoes, was literally 1 Potato sliced and the side veggies was tasteless. 170$ later what a waste of time and money.
