We had a wonderful dinner with our cousins tonight at this charming restaurant in Old Montreal. To start, we enjoyed two cocktails -- the Aperol Spritzerita and the Mai Tai. Both were refreshing and easy to sip. All four of us opted for the three-course dinner, which included an appetizer, main course, and dessert. For appetizers, two of us had the cod croquettes and grilled chorizo. I chose the grilled sardines and also added an order of grilled calamari. Everything was delicious, well-prepared, and full of flavor. For our main courses, two of us ordered the fish and seafood rice, one chose the grilled octopus, and my husband selected the catch of the day, which was tuna. Every dish was expertly seasoned, flavorful, and very satisfying. For dessert, two of us enjoyed the flan while the other two chose the chocolate mousse. Both desserts were excellent and provided the perfect ending to a memorable meal. Our cousins also ordered espresso, which they thoroughly enjoyed. The hospitality was exceptional. Our server, Jaden was warm, courteous, attentive, and genuinely easy to talk to. The owner and chef, Luis, also stopped by our table to check on us. He was gracious, down-to-earth, and incredibly welcoming. His kindness made us feel less like customers and more like guests in his own home. The décor and atmosphere created a comfortable and inviting setting for a relaxing dinner with family. From the delicious food to the outstanding hospitality, every aspect of our experience was enjoyable. Went here last night in the Old Port and had such a great experience at Porto Mar. You need to check them out ASAP! Our server Alex was super chill and attentive, and one of the owners, Melanie, came by and was incredibly kind. We even got the chance to speak with the chef, which made the whole experience feel really personal. Food-wise, everything was fresh and full of flavor. The spicy shrimp were a standout so delicious, I'd go back just for those. I had the turbot (yes, it's a real fish ) and it was cooked perfectly. The potatoes on the side were also amazing. We also had a seafood medley with rice (loaded with clams, mussels, shrimp, salmon, cod basically everything) and it was super saucy and satisfying. Drinks were on point too loved my old fashioned. To finish, we had a porto-braised pear with ice cream and it was honestly the perfect dessert. Beautiful location, especially if you can grab a window seat. This restaurant seems rather large and had a variety of tables (and a bar). There's also apparently two doors to get in. We ended up coming in through not the main door. But we were seated at a table for two upon arrival with no reservations. The interior had a lot of nice wood natural looking items, but it also felt a little dated. But the holiday decoration did look really nice. Our waitress was nice. We ordered our dinner and she made sure we always had water. Service was a little slow though especially in the beginning (to take our order) and at the end (to get our check and then pay). We did come in right before they were shutting down for an extended holiday period. They served table bread and olive (with their pits). Ended up ordering an evening table that came with an app, main, and dessert. I got the grilled chorizo, salmon and chocolate mousse. We also got the pork scallops. They didn't have the Portuguese soup at this time. The chorizo was good, the sausage casing had a crispiness and snap to it. The salmon was fine and it came with some potato hash and vegetables. Dingy and old inside - staff was really trying the hard sell - we ordered one pre fixe menu item and one cod off the menu .the waitress was trying to work the hard sell " just so you know the food gets cooked in the oven and it takes 25 minutes so you may be hungry shouldn't you order an appetizer ?" You already got me for 44$ for a liter of cheap wine - do I really need to order food that I don't want? The food was good although portions were very small for Portuguese restaurant and for what I saw at other restaurants I. Montréal in general. You will definitely need to take a shower after sitting in Those nasty chairs. I honestly considered leaving or standing when I saw how worn out and filthy they were. I enjoyed a delightful lunch at this Old Montreal restaurant. The table d'hote included a tasty green salad, a hearty serving of pasta with chorizo (with a basket of bread). For dessert, I chose the chocolate mousse and a cup of tea. With tip and tax, I paid $40. Service was pleasant and prompt. An excellent deal, I thought. Huge amount of food but quality I could easily make at home. I had the salmon porto mar which was a regular salmon steak twice the size of what I typically eat at home with some fresh dill on it. Came in for lunch at around 1pm. Bread does not come warmed. Have to say Porto Mar leaves a lot to be desired. Escargot (6/10): came with a vinegary sauce and green onion. Not the sauce I'm used to and for good reason. The sauce is not dippable and the dish itself did not give the richness I'd hoped for from escargot. Calamari (6/10): not much flavor going on with this. It was pretty much boiled calamari with some lemon juice. Tomato Salad (7/10): I'm a bit biased since I like tomatoes but it's literally just sliced tomatoes with lemon, salt, pepper, and pomegranate seeds. Not much going on. Sardines (7/10): sardines were grilled nicely but again not much going on with the dish. Served whole. Seafood Rice (7/10): felt like the fish was not cooked super well (tasted tough). Rice seemed unevenly cooked. Flavors were not bad and were pretty aromatic. Service (9/10): very helpful, kind server. Answered all our questions and managed to get a dish that was only on the dinner menu for us. Food took awhile to come out (waited about 45 mins for the dishes to come out). Ambiance (8/10): clean, dark inside, romantic atmosphere. Wasn't a fan that the plates table is in the center of the restaurant. Ruined the vibes a bit. Definitely would not make an effort to come out here again. Little Portugal is definitely the spot to go to for Portuguese food as this was extremely lacking in flavor and impression. read more

As soon as I saw this when arriving in Montreal , I told my wife we HAD to stop here. When I saw the reviews and the photos, it was a must go to. We had the classic sardines plate . They had carrot soup, made from scratch. Sardines were grilled and delicious, the potatoes and grilled vegetables. Lunch also came with a complimentary dessert. Chocolate mousse and rice pudding for dessert. Stefane was our waiter and he was very attentive and provided great service. Owners will friendly and fantastic. OMG!!! This place is wonderful! First, the restaurant is located in Old Montreal, a quaint and historical part of Montreal. The building dates backs to the 1800s. The brick walls, brick staircases, the number of tables, the woodwork, and the entire experience were completely charming. Our waitress, Cynthia, was pleasant, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. Ask for Cynthia. I had the Spicy Shrimp appetizer. Perfect! The Rack of Lamb. Perfect! Perfect! While all the other parties with no reservation where given a regular table, we got the one where you got to squish yourself to have a seat. Yes, the Porto Mar was pretty much empty. Finally tried this Portuguese resto in the old port. We tried the table hotel menu that came with 1 appetizers, 1 main and a dessert with coffee. We got ceasars for drinks, but they weren't good at all. They start by giving you some fresh bread with butter and some olives, they were good. We tried the snails and cod croquettes, they were both really good. We also got a salad to share but nothing spectacular about it. The chicken main came with fries and vegetables, the chicken was okay , the white part of the chicken was dry, but the homemade cut fries were really good. The Piri Piri shrimp and calamari was good, the sauce was spicy so if you can't do spicy I won't suggest this plate, also it came with rice and veggies, overall a plate I recommend to get. For dessert we got the flan and chocolate mousse, and they were both delicious We went on a Saturday night and it was pretty much empty. The service to come see us the first time was really long but other then that the food came pretty fast and all. Great discovery on our ( my wife's and mine), recent visit to Montreal. It was just across Hotel Uville where we stayed, in old Montreal. Specializes in Portuguese seafood. We have been to various Portuguese restaurants in Toronto. In our opinion, Porto Mar in Montreal surpasses them all. We ordered Escargots and Grilled sardines as appetizers. Escargot were cooked in Balsamic Vinegar and red wine. Very different from standard butter formula in many places. Main course was Arctic Char , and Fresh Cod. Very delicately done. I was looking forward to trying this restaurant with my foodie friends after reading some great reviews! Sadly I was disappointed by my meal although some of it was delicious. The sangria was good and refreshing. I took the table d'hote like most of my friends. Three of us took the fish of the day plate and were very disappointed. For the price we payed the plate was how should I put it - lacking in food... (see picture). It had a little piece of potato, two broccoli pieces, some sort of turnip slices and two thinly sliced carrots. The presentation of the plate was horrible! The fish was nothing special and quite bland. Mind you the escargot appetizer was delicious as well as the flan. Service was slow, our desserts were served before the coffees. Most of us had finished our desserts by the time the coffee arrived. My other friends who chose the other options got fuller plates and found them tasty. I would not recommend any of their fish plates because you will leave hungry. For the price they were charging, you would imagine a fuller plate. read more

My wife and I were incredibly impressed. While other restaurants were packed and very noisy, Porto Mar was busy but not crowded and with a subdued noise level. I'd suggest it as an excellent choice for a dinner with conversation, a romantic dinner, and/or a gourmet dining experience. If you want to bump elbows with other diners and shout to have a conversation over a loud techno beat, don't go here! We found the restaurant on a gluten-aware list and it worked out fine. They don't have a special menu but we were told the chef would take care and that we weren't alone. There was another table with the same request. In the end, there was absolutely no problem. We did the table d'hôte or fixed price menu. My chorizo and salad starter was really good and a nice size if you wanted a small plate meal. I was thinking that you could have that, a couple glasses of wine and desert and be happy. But ... We had salmon and swordfish (one of the two fish of the day). The swordfish was very good but we agreed that the salmon was probably the best we had every tasted. Incredible. We think it was cedar plank grilled but we're not sure. Really special. We also judge restaurants by their ability to cook vegetables. Each of us had out of this world sugar snap peas, roasted red peppers, and a potato and onion dish. Just right in flavor and tenderness. Desert - my rice pudding was OK with a little too much cinnamon but my wife's chocolate mousse was heavenly. Wow! We had the house wine which was very good. Mine was a privately imported red in the new world style. If you don't care for that, they have a large wine list for bottles. Nice people, nice atmosphere, and tremendous food. Food is absolutely amazing . Like being transported to the Mediterranean coast. We had the spicy shrimp, two orders of croquettes (they are the best I've ever had!!!), snails and sardines . Excellent Portuguese restaurant near the water. Not very crowded when we were there on a weeknight, probably due to its off the beaten path location even though it's just a block from the busier restaurant streets. Anyway, everything we had was delicious, especially the sardine starter and the seafood and rice main course, the latter being kind of a bouillabaisse with rice. First of all, this place has been hit pretty hard with all the construction going on Place d'Youville. Hopefully they'll have more clientele during the summer months. I was contemplating on whether I give them a 3 or 4 *...because they really do a decent job on all of their dishes, but except for the escargots, I can't remember anything else that I've had here (sort of). The sole reason I came back here, was because my mom wanted to have their escargots...unlike the usual French style ones, these are served in a reduced balsamic base sauce that is super tasty. We end up having to ask for more bread to dip in. For mains I've tried fish of the day on both visits, stingray once and walleye the other. What can I say... It was a humiliating insult. This will be a long review, so bear with me. First, I'll congratulate the servers anyway on their work and courtesy. Whether they were in on the travesty we were subjected to is irrelevant, because their treatment of us was good, apart from an unexcusable failure I will mention later on. We had a reservation at Porto Mar me and my family for what we thought would be a special dinner. We get there, get sat, and order. The restaurant was empty, but given the reviews and the situation with COVID-19, I didn't think much of it. Our entrées arrive... There is no other way to put it: the calamari was stinkier than sewer-dipped month-old socks, the portions were small (I concur with another review) and the salad was as basic as it gets. We didn't discuss the calamari much, because it was my little sister's order, and my family was shy and not in a mood to ruin the evening. Soon after, the main courses are served. The servers failed to mention that the 'grillades mixtes' was the exact same thing as what we were served as an entrée... The server asks if all is okay, I tell him we'll talk soon. Immediately after, my sister gives me a taste of the salmon that she got served, and it there that I couldn't take it anymore. It was very sour, foul-smelling, slimy, and frankly disgusting: we got served rubbish. I call the "shef" and ask him to taste the salmon. I watch him as he turns red, walks towards the table, takes a bite and tries to justify what his tongue is clearly rejecting. He says that it's "fumé." I send my family out, and I ask for the bill while they continue to insult me by saying that 'lemon and thyme create that taste.' Pathetic. How dare you. I wasn't born yesterday to not know what old rotten fish tastes and smells like. I won't play the victim and say that they did what they did because my mother is Muslim and wears a head scarf, but instead I will say that they cheated us because they thought we were too weak to stand up against it. Portugal and Algeria both are mediterranean countries... We know about fish too. Porto Mar, you have disgraced Portuguese cuisine in my eyes, because it is way better than that. Finally, I payed for what we ate out of honour, tipped the servers, and said obrigado. Because that is the last time I'll ever set foot in that place. 0 stars. read more

Thid restaurant is one you need to go out of your way for. Right now, due to construction and an archeological dig just outside its entrance, tourists aren't dropping in. But the locals still do according to our waiter. He said the dig is expected to go on for another year. Ignore the construction vehicles and drop on in. It's well worth it. it's a wonderful restaurant. The historic structure is beautiful. The food is excellent. All three of us had the Portuguese soup (kale, potatoes, and sausage). I had the calamari, my husband had the cod special, and my son had the bruscetta du beouf espetata (Portuguese beef kabobs). For desert, they had a Portuguese apple tart ( too sweet for me, but they liked it) & a chocolate mouse. One of the most interesting parts of the evening was taking a walk to the restroom. You leave the restaurant, go down a couple of steps and turn left. You head upstairs on a stone spiral staircase built about 20 years ago that has the feeling of a Renaissance stone stairs in a European castle. Very impressive. Wow! read more

We went to Porto Mar for our last night in Montreal and it was excellent. We had a chance to try a number of different things (we got the mixed seafood grill for two) and we liked everything. Honestly, the sardines require skill to separate the meat from the bones and we weren't very good at that. But really, you can't beat the food here and it's not the restaurant's fault that sardines are built the way they are. The odd beauty of Porto Mar (at least if you're a customer) is that it never seems to be crowded. This was true when we were there and it's also been true for many of the other reviewers, so take advantage of this. Go when the old city is full of tourists. Go when you're tired of the noise and the crowds. Go early in your trip so you can go back again. Can you tell I liked it? There's apparently an architectural dig happening nearby. There are signs that mention an old fire, there were ancient walls being unearthed, and it was interesting to walk around the area. But back to the restaurant. Go there and recommend it to other people, you'll look like a genius. read more

Around the corner from the mass of restaurants and across from the water at 201 Place D Vouville you will find a wonderful place for a meal. Hubby and went there for his birthday dinner on Friday night about 8pm. It was not too busy, which was great since we could converse at a moderate level. As soon as we saw grilled squid and grilled sardines on the menu, we started to salivate. We weren't disappointed. I was served four whole sardines, crisp, very fresh and just yummy. Hubby had two squid lightly charred, both dishes perfect. The dishes were accompanied with sauteed greens, potato, parsnip and carrot. For dessert I had two custard filled tarts. Not too sweet in a melt in your mouth crust. The service was excellent and we enjoyed talking with the owner. Bill was $50.13. This was one of the most enjoyable evenings we had in Montreal. Chourico was the best I've had. Not overly spicy, just perfect. The sardines were grilled, meaty, and delicious. Only thing was my wife got mad at me for not eating the skin! The cod was flaky and my wife thought it was out of this world. I had the calf's liver which was cooked to perfection. The Portuguese house red wine was perfect, the port after dinner was great and of high quality. For the meal, we had Portuguese steak (which includes a fried egg on top), shrimp Porto mar and pork scallops. All were incredibly tasty and delicious. Our starters were escargots and bread. Porto Mar was a much-needed respite after a few nights of noisy, crowded restaurants and the quiet was the least of its pleasures. I thoroughly enjoyed my bachaulau (grilled salt cod) and it was nice to see a healthy serving of very tasty mixed greens alongside the roasted potatoes. My companion had the sardines to start and liver & onions in a raspberry sauce as his entree. He especially liked their house red, Capataz (which I have since tried to find in Toronto and online as a surprise but to no avail). For dessert, he had the apple cake, tasty enough but it didn't compare to the light and airy, dark chocolate, bubbly confection that is their mousse. Best ever. The service was excellent. We had a wonderful sit down meal just before the most recent restrictions kicked in. The service was impeccable and the staff was friendly and took great care of us. My wife had escargot for the starter which was delightful! Her main dish was the catch of the day, swordfish was tender and tasty. I had the grilled sardines for my starter. Very nicely presented and a lovely flavour. I had the calamari for my main. Calamari is one of those dishes that can go either way... this was amazing, light and tender... I was not disappointed at all. The house red wine was quite dry (which I prefer) and did not disappoint. For dessert my wife had the chocolate pudding... which is made in house with 60% dark chocolate. Delightful and light. I had the Creme Caramel for my dessert which I WILL go back for! It was amazing. We had a lovely espresso with our dessert which was not bitter or harsh. I wish I knew their coffee blend! All told, it was a great evening out and a delicious meal.... for two people, wine included, the cost was around $100cdn. I strongly recommend this place and it is a great value! read more
