A great place to take the kids…read more.. Love the children's area! There is a decently-stocked play area with toys and games appropriate for kiddos ages 6 months-5 years. There are usually coloring and activity pages available near the children's librarian's desk as well. The staff in the area is helpful and courteous. There is a children's restroom in the kids' area complete with toddler-sized potty and changing table. There is a changing table in the lobby women's room as well. There are usually plenty of parents around, and if you're a nursing mom, you'll never get the evil eye here (though you shouldn't get it anywhere, y'know?). Throughout the year, the library offers programs for children of all ages. These range from Babies in Bloom (newborn-24 months) to teen classes and workshops. I'd love to give the West County Area Library five stars, but I just can't get past the modern architecture and the somewhat sterile vibe. I guess that I just like a library to have some character (and no, that doesn't mean cobwebs and card catalogs; just a more traditional look).

I instantly loved the bright and spacious space. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable, got me my new library card with huge smiles. One glance at the bulletin board got me excited as they have so many events lined up - all organized by the dedicated staff. This library is part of the Howard Library network and has a great set of books. Both their website and app are user-friendly to browse, hold and check out books. I'd certainly be frequenting it for getting some work done or quiet reading :)

I did have the opportunity to use the library briefly. In addition to a library, this locale is a senior center. I love this idea, as there should be a place where seniors can go to have activities. I believe that the senior center is on the upper level. The library is on the lower area, nice in size and nicely organized no complaints there. Here lies my issues: Parking. Wowza. It is limited. Despite there being parking in the front, side, and a parking lot behind the library it still appears to be limited based on the volume. Be careful where you park, because you will be towed! The meeting room is pretty cool; however, it can be a wee bit loud as the door is quite heavy and slams, additionally you can hear just about everything from folk in the restroom to the elevator being operated. It isn't ideal but it definitely meets the need.

Although, I know how to find items on the shelf, I was treated to an awesome tour by a librarian name Robby. He was knowledgeable in what I was looking for and so professional. As a branch of the Enoch Pratt Library system, the Hamdpen location is an…read moreamazing combination of beautiful community location (there is a great meeting room downstairs that can be reserved by groups) and a way to bring the world of books to the neighborhood. While the location itself is relatively small, there is still a great selection of books on the shelves in each category and of course you can easily log on to the library's webpage with your card and reserve any book in the system (or request books through MARIANA) to be transported from any library in the state of Maryland to be brought right here to Hampden. Now that's what I call service! And while I'm on my soapbox of loving the library, your card / account gives you access to Libby, Kanopy, and Hoopla (and I'm sure much more) and audio books, e-reads, and streaming of shows, movies, documentaries are all possible - for free! This remodel is the biggest disappointment. While there are new floors, carpets, and shelving, the…read moresheer number of incomplete, empty, and "not yet available" things is staggering. To start, the children's area is mostly empty, devoid of toys and other learning materials that allow children to express their creativity. Instead, the main children's are has a couple of round tables, a few chairs, a kids toy house in the middle of the service area, and a few old and dirty toys. That's it. For a community with over 9,000 children ages 9 and under. There's no enclosed place for kids. No new learning environments. How does Arbutus, which was last remodeled over a decade ago have a better kids play and learning area than Catonsville which was remodeled just last year? The other frustrating thing is that staff aren't around to help. There's one person at the desk. That's it. If there's a line of 3 people, they say they can't call for back up unless it gets longer. If you ask a person shelving books, they can't help either saying it's BCPL policy that two people can't help someone at the desk. I will say, the branch is clean and the bathrooms are way better. I also like the enclosed teen space which is nice. I also think generally, most of the staff are pretty pleasant. It just sucks that BCPL blundered the renovation and are hampering customer service.

We have been using this branch of the FABULOUS AA County Library system for many years. We have…read morelived in Pasadena for 47 years, 35 of them near to this branch and have been going here ever since it opened. The staff are always friendly and helpful. If you want a book that they don't have they get it for you. Well I guess that is a function of this library system. But you won't get any complaints from me about the library system in AA County Whoever runs it realizes how important a library is to the citizens of the County. This branch is near to a large school system and I see the students using it. This is an important resource for school children as well as older studenst and it is good to see that they have the chance to see how a good library can help them. And I hope that it will continue to be here for all of us for many years to come. My wife and I are senior citizens now, and we like to joke with the staff that we are their best customers! We use the books and, the DVD movies as well as the papers and magazines and of course the research of the Librarians themselves from time to time. I consider our library system to one of the best uses of our tax dollars. (And the Mountain Road branch is one of the best)

There are tons of African American bent books and audio which befits the neighborhood. Lots of books are displayed on the top of the short bookcases. It was around 3:30 pm and I expected lots of high schoolers crowding the stacks but this place was empty... The library staff I interacted with were friendly and efficient in checking me out.

I visited this library for the first time yesterday because it is finals week at my school and I…read morehave to cram in a lot of work by next week. I arrived to the library around 12:30pm and sat upstairs at the large table near the teenage book section with my assignments and headphones to start working. As I was finding my seat, I saw a sign on the quiet study room that said no elementary or middle schoolers were allowed in. I didn't think much of it l because there were no children around. Sometime after 2pm, multiple kids (elementary and middle school age) showed up and the library turned unintentionally into an aftercare program. They were very noisy and the librarian constantly had to remind them of proper library etiquette. I was glad to see kids use the library's free resources so I give 4 stars. The library is beautiful, was clean and maintained very well but the children made it difficult to get my work done. Next time I'll visit earlier and/or go in the study room. I didn't notice until I was going back to my car that there were so many schools located right next to the library so definitely come earlier in the day to avoid the ruckus.
