Not a fan. I haven't seen where students learn self defense. They play "tag", and then sit silently while listening to their instructor drone on while holding a pool noodle. I also visited for a kids bday party; the kids had fun. It was tag - pizza - jump rope - cake - ball game - tag read more

My children have found a new found confidence and willingness to try new things since starting classes. Sinai Chase is energetic, patient and teaches classes will enthusiasm and passion for martial arts, that radiates to his students. We offer training in traditional martial arts - Japanese style Ju-Jitsu (not Brazilian) for adults and Karate for the kids. We even have adult self defense classes for those who just want to learn some basic techniques to help them defend themselves. And if you're looking to get in shape, we have an awesome Fitness Kickboxing class you should join!

History

Established in 2014.

The dojo got its start operating through local YMCA's. That's where the current owner started his training back in 1985 under Sensei Jim Howard. Somewhere around 1990, Sensei Jim had to relocate and Sensei Wade Susie took over the role as head instructor. Sensei Wade continued to teach until 2013, when he decided to retire. Sensei Wade asked Sensei Will Harris to take over as the lead instructor, and Sensei Will humbly accepted. After teaching at the Ward Y in Harford County for about a year, Sensei Will had a desire to run more classes than the Y could accommodate. It was then that Sensei Will founded Baltimore School of Self Defense, LLC. We started out in a very small space in a local shopping center and stayed there for about 3 years. In November 2017, we moved into our brand new facility off of Route 43 and expanded our classes. Come check it out!

Meet the Business Owner: Will H.

Sensei Harris has been studying martial arts for over 30 years. He got his start tagging along with his older brother who had become interested in trying out a ju-jitsu class at the local Y. Life's obligations took his brother away from the class, but sensei continued his training, ultimately earning his shodan (1st degree black belt) under Sensei Jim Howard, who had had received his training from Sensei William Fromm. Professor Fromm along with Professor George Kirby, founded Budoshin Ju-Jitsu. Sensei Will Harris continued his training and progressed through the ranks to his current rank of shichidan (7th degree blackbelt) in Budoshin Ju-jitsu under Sensei Wade Susie. Sensei Will Harris was also promoted to yondan (4th degree blackbelt) in American Combat Ju-jitsu by Professor Tony Maynard.

Review of water park only:…read more Don't buy for the whole family. We made the mistake of buying for a family of 4, but only small kids would enjoy this. Could have saved half the cost by just buying for 2 kids. You definitely don't need more than an hour either. It's really loud, so it's not great for autistic or sensory sensitive kids. My kids don't enjoy water directly in their face, and there's nowhere to go that doesn't have water landing directly in your face. There's nowhere for adults to sit, and it's a small room so there's residual splashing everywhere; wear pool shoes even if you don't go on the play structure and are just supervising the kids. During the 5-minute breaks once per hour, it would be nice if you could use the adjacent pool I but it was occupied with aquatic sports teams. Staff were very friendly, and the overall sports/rec facility looks huge and very clean. Locker rooms were very clean as well. For our family, however, it just wasn't worth the price paid nor was it the type of water park that would work for older kids or autistic kids.

My daughter started here a few months ago just after she turned 3. Not only was Mr Chase amazing as an instructor but he kept her so engaged that she can't wait to go back. The classes are about a half hour to 45 minutes long and have very few other kids so it's a very personalized environment. Parents can sit right there in the Dojo so the little ones don't have to get upset when mommy or daddy have to leave three room, because they don't! The prices are decent for the experience you get. The place is clean, friendly, and welcoming. Will be going back every week for a long time. read more

My son loves this place, and the instructor is great with kids. Very clean and welcoming. Only reason i give it 4 stars is that the skills they teach are different than a traditional karate class, which is what we came from. I was hoping he would be able to continue the lessons he already knew, but that is not the case. So just keep that in mind if your child has previous MA experience! read more

I had a birthday party here for my son. Will was wonderful in communicating in allow me to bring food for the adults early. They take care of everything, and the kids had a great time!
