The Master (surprisingly) was young, but after one trial class, my 7 year old daughter was hooked. She loved how Master Andrew made classes fun, entertaining, and filled with laughter, but also included times for serious learning accordingly. He understands if the kids are having a difficult time with certain forms, but continues to encourage them which helps give them that push to continue, rather than to quit. This dojo is also run by the most family-oriented family, whom (from what I've seen) all remembers each students and their families names. They are constantly sanitizing and keeping the place clean. Yes, even before covid hit. 4 years later, my daughter who started out as a no belt, holds a second degree black belt. My son struggles with paying attention in school, but here he loves "focusing" and learning new techniques. It's the right balance of challenge and accomplishment. The facility is nice enough, there is enough room for all the kids to spread out. Class sizes are around 12-15, which is perfect. Belt progression is not guaranteed, and belt testing is serious. Master Andrew trains his students to be competitive and many do participate in state and national competitions, but we're only white belt, so a ways to go still. If you're looking for a family-friendly, flexible, fun and competitive environment, this is the place.

We recently brought our 5 year old son to Lee's Taekwondo in Annapolis for a trial class. He is…read moreautistic and verbal, and while he sometimes needs extra prompts or redirection, he participated well in both classes. He followed instructions, stayed engaged, and genuinely enjoyed himself. Importantly, he was not disruptive to other children, did not interfere with anyone else's turns, and did not get in the way of the class. The instructors allowed him to attend a trial class, and during the class there were no major issues or safety concerns. After the trial period, however, we were informed that they would not allow him to enroll due to his special needs and the additional attention he may require and they cannot offer private classes at this time. I understand that not every program is equipped or obligated to accommodate every child, and I respect that running a group class comes with limitations. That said, this experience was incredibly disappointing. Our son did well, he loved it, and he has been talking about taekwondo and asking when he can go back. Having to explain to him that we cannot go, despite doing his best, has been heartbreaking. What makes this particularly difficult is that he was given the opportunity to try, showed that he could participate meaningfully, and then was excluded anyway. For families with neurodivergent children, moments where our kids feel confident, included, and excited about an activity are rare and incredibly important. I'm sharing this so other parents of children with special needs are aware and so the school might reflect on how situations like this are handled. Inclusion does not require perfection, but it does require recognizing effort, progress, and the real impact these decisions have on young children who just want to belong.

Master Lee also shows on a regular basis that he is still the best martial artist in the school, when he demonstrates moves, kicks, and forms. I joined after my daughter became a Black Belt and leader in the school and now, I'm a 3rd degree black belt and part time instructor. If you really like taekwondo, Master Lee's competition team is a real workout preparing you for competition with many of the schools in the DC, MD, VA area. See you there!

We started going to keep in shape during Covid and partly for me to live out my dream of being a Kung Fu fighting Hero and we ended up falling in love with it and the teachers! Just recently the instructors incorporated a "Squid Game" theme for our class and it was soo much fun that we were almost ok with doing intense training because of all the fun we were having. That just shows, to me at least, that the teachers are knowledgeable on the current times/events and are committed to looking for new ways to keep us engaged. Did I mention how friendly and kind everyone from the owner to staff members are? They are patient with my boys, but also stern and I find that to be a great balance. Long story, short, I witnessed my son being kicked and punched several times by another student, and it was never acknowledged or addressed by the staff. When I attempted to make the instructors (and management) aware of this, the response was lackluster at best. Let me paint the full picture of my dismay... My experience with this business is a classic case of what happens when you don't heed red flags when you should. Let me start by stating how excited I was to learn about Northeast Taekwondo about a year and a half ago. A few of my son's friends (slightly older) had attended and it is very close to our house and school. So after reading the Yelp reviews, I called and spoke to someone who advised me that the 3 year old group was full, and that he would put us on the wait list for when my son got closer to 5 (which was this September). I received a call about a year later, advising me that a spot had opened up, but when I confirmed my son's age (4 at this point), he said that he made a mistake and that we should expect another call in late August or so. Despite the confusion, we were content, having already enrolled my son in Aikido classes across town. So come early September, since I had not heard from the company, I got proactive and attempted to reach them by phone several times (5-6 times). I left a few messages, and never received a call back. I am a stickler about businesses returning customer inquiries in a timely fashion, so once I did not hear back, I wrote them off as unworthy of my business. A few weeks later, I finally received a call back advising me of open slots and an orientation happening on 9/25. When I advised Mr. O'Kelly of the un-returned calls, he never acknowledged the oversight or apologized; he simply implied that it was my fault by stating that it was best that I email in the future. Despite these small deals, I decided to still attend the orientation; mainly because of how close the facility is to our home and the kids' school. Right now we travel 30 minutes across town during rush hour, and I was looking to cut down on the commute. I also was excited about the prospects of starting my 3 year old out too. Anyway, we arrived for the orientation, and no one explained that the parents were supposed to sit, while the kids were to gather and participate out on the mats. The staff member who greeted us with the contract saw my son sitting next to me and never suggested he join the group. After a few minutes, when I saw other kids his age participating in street clothes I asked about it and only then was I advised that he should join in. This placed him in the back of class, where the instructors paid little attention to what was going on. My son ended up lined up next to an unruly child who was running around, being wild and disrupting the class. The instructors spent a lot of time trying to reel him in, but as their attention went back to the older, more skilled kids in the front of the room, they totally missed this child practice-punching and kicking my son. My son calmly asked him to stop, and after doing it a few more times, the unruly child found other ways to get in trouble. But never once did the instructors notice what happened, and address it. Another staff member was discussing payment with us in the back of the room, and when I stood up to address the punching and kicking, he basically ignored me. Because, the other child had ran to the front of the room, and left my son alone, I allowed my son to finish the lesson. So this was about 20-30 minutes in. The kids continued to do group technique drills and individual strikes on instructors with mats. It was then that I noticed that little to no attention was being paid to the kids in the middle and back of the room, and especially not the kids who were struggling. My son's form or lack of focus at times was never noticed or corrected and I just felt like his needs had fallen through the cracks since he was not either acting bad or overachieving. My husband and I walked away from the experience knowing that we would not be back, especially since our experience at DC Aikido has been the exact opposite. That said, I felt it necessary to bring these issues to the attention of the business owner, who was not present at orientation. So, I emailed him (per his request) and in as nice a way as possible, I voiced my concerns. Mr. O'Kelly simply stated that "it's not ideal for everyone." He never acknowledged/addressed the real issues at hand - namely the safety of my child, the negligence of his staff, and the promise to do better in the future. So, my family and I will steer way clear of Northeast Taekwondo and instead spend our time and money patronizing DC Aikido as we have for the past year.

The staff and instructors are incredibly friendly and helped my son feel welcomed, even with him being one of the youngest in the group. We tried several different places, but they just did not measure up to our old one (Tiger Den). Finally we discovered Tiger World Class Tae Kwon Do, in Ellicott City. I have been saying for years that we need something like this here! You will find the instructors, Master Shin and Master Chong are both experts in Tae Kwon Do, however most importantly are enthusiastic about the sport! They have a way of encouraging the kids to learn while strengthening their bodies and teaching respect. My son's behavior improved immediately after a few classes. He wants to do well for the Masters and he has developed an appreciation for the Korean teachings of respect. Most of all, he is excited to learn and has a goal to strive for black belt. The Masters get the kids to think about goals, which is what they need. My son even has the thought the he could compete one day, just like the Masters. I believe with excellent teachers like Master Shin and Master Chong it is possible! You will find the dojo is always clean and everything is new. They have state of the art equipment, and benches for the parents to sit and watch. The schedule is very accommodating. You can choose from a variety of classes from afternoon to late evening, and even Saturday classes. The class time is just under an hour, so not too long for busy schedules and it does not interfere with homework. You will find price to be comparable to others in the area, and they do accept payment plans. It is well worth the money, and it has been my experience that the class sizes are small enough that each child gets individual instruction and attention. Overall, this is a success for Ellicott City! This is exactly the type of Tae Kwon Do we needed. They have a website that gives more information of their backgrounds.
