The best Tai Chi program in the country. I've been attending U.S. Kuo Shu Academy for over 19 years. I've looked around all over have not found any better Tai Chi program anywhere. You get to learn Yang Style Tai Chi, straight sword form, broad sword form, and Chen Pan Ling form. Also, we learn Qi Gong and meditation which is amazing. I want to express my frustration with my experience at this establishment, particularly with Mr. Harris (or Mr. Harrison). He didn't clearly explain the contract terms, which is essential. I called on July 15 to discuss my family's in-progress move and was only able to schedule an appointment for July 23. During our meeting, I wanted to cancel the contract, but he said I must keep making payments until August, even though an extra fee was charged to my account right after signing. We're moving away, making it impractical to attend classes, yet they insist my child participate in a promotion ceremony on August 23 and that I can only withdraw after that. It's frustrating because my child isn't receiving proper instruction; although we have videos proving he isn't engaged, the instructor claims otherwise. This program seems more focused on profits than education, and I'm left confused about how to end this situation, especially with concerns about potential charges for August, September, and the mystery additional charge already taken. read more

As a parent, I can not recommend this establishment highly enough. As a student, I find the lessons invaluable. As a member of the Kung fu family, I feel connected. As a kid I always wanted to learn martial arts. Instead my parents put me in dance. I quite literally was the WORST dancer. Two left feet that didn't function, awful rhythm, you name it. I always wanted to be able to defend myself if I needed to. This was not something my parents thought was important. I knew I wanted to change that for my own kids. As a parent, I watched my kids quite literally grow with confidence. Both my kids were timid at first. They were scared. The first day they met such wonderful instructors who made them feel at home. They were caring and my kids felt respected. They wanted to go back every day they could. I watched my daughter get upset at the start. She would cry a lot. Very emotional and lacked confidence at first. You would not know it today. She started out a Little Eagle which is the little kid program whereas my son and I started out in basic core. As my daughter rose through the ranks in sashes, I watched her become more and more confident. Kung fu does not only focus on physical training. The curriculum develops the person. We have black sash attitudes that we discuss every class and talk about how this is useful in our lives not only in class but outside. This got my kids to start opening up and talking to people. They developed the courage to speak what they wanted to without fear or judgment. Everyone is always very respectful. Respect is something that is strongly used in the classes. Students always show courtesy to each other and everyone in and outside the school. The attitude in the school is contagious in a great way. Everyone starts out wearing these white pants that are not flattering so don't come in thinking you're going to win any beauty pageants. I'n fact I classified myself as the Stay puff marshmallow from ghostbusters . I was incredibly awkward at first. Here I was almost 40 in a class with kids who could run circles around me. But I have to say, if I can do this ANYONE CAN! I am currently a brown with one white stripe sash and I am incredibly proud of what I've accomplished. I have managed to lose 50lbs and I am stronger not only physically but mentally. I have a lot more confidence in myself and I have another family to call my own. US Kuo Shu Academy is the best decision we ever made as a family. I know my kids are going to continue to improve and continue to gain confidence. I know our friends have done the same. If you have an opportunity to come in and try it out, I highly recommend it! read more

I have studied martial arts since I was 13 off an on. Spent a lot of time trying to find the right fit for me. Until I found myself at US Kuo Shu Academy in Owings Mills one day. That one day turned into 8+ years and it has been great. Master Huang takes a complete approach to teaching martial arts. While training to be a black sash he makes sure that training your body is only PART of the process. Master Huang is also interested in developing character within each student. He wants to develop leaders not just black sashes. A side from learning martial arts I had a goal to be healthier and lose weight. During my time at the academy I have lost 70lbs along with increased mobility and flexibility. I have been studying martial arts sporadically since I was very young, and I did quite extensive research on schools when I decided to settle in the area after college. I was looking for a very knowledgeable Tai chi instructor. One of my friends and I went to visit US Kuoshu Academy just to see what it was like. I was impressed with the friendly, encouraging, and knowledgeable instructor who greeted me when we walked in. The school has two workout rooms. A padded floor on one, and carpet over pad in the other. Reasonably spacious, and well kept, though the pads do show the wear and tear of long hours of hard workouts. Most students who come in take group lessons in Tien Shan Pai kung fu, Tai Chi Chuan, or Hsing-yi. Private lessons are also offered with Grandmaster Huang Chien-Liang. The primarily volunteer instructor staff who teach the group lessons are knowledgeable and friendly, and clearly show their love and enthusiasm for the subject they teach. I ended up choosing to take the kung fu group lessons, and have been very happy. I am in better shape than I was just out of college, and am a member of a welcoming and supportive community of martial artists. read more

For many years, I took martial arts classes (both kung fu and tai chi) at U.S. Kuoshu Academy. I've moved out of the DC area, but continue to return from time to time for training. They have a group class format and a private lesson format. Most students opt for the group lesson format. Most of the classes that I took were private lessons, and I had the remarkable privilege of studying with the Head Instructor and School Owner, Grandmaster Huang. The school is well appointed for a martial arts school. The flooring is carpet over pad, which is by far the best surface for this kind of training. They also have separate bathrooms and changing rooms for men and women. There are two large rooms where the classes are taught, and chairs for parents and guests to watch the classes. Inside, the school has a great feeling, and it's filled with awards, photos, trophies, and Chinese calligraphy and paintings. Grandmaster Huang, the Head Instructor and School Owner, is an internationally recognized expert on Chinese martial arts. The awards and trophies were for performances by him and his students; photos were taken at world level tournaments; and the calligraphy and paintings were gifts from his teacher and other martial arts masters. You could spend an afternoon exploring all of the memorabilia on the walls. As for the training, it is top notch. I drove more than an hour each way for each of my training sessions. Some students at the school did extensive research on many of the schools in northern Virginia, DC and Maryland before starting classes at U.S. Kuoshu Academy. The programs offered, material available, and level of the instructors, are simply world class. And I mean world class: quite a few of the instructors were international or world champions in martial arts competitions. I have known many of the instructors for more than a dozen years. I think that's a testament to the quality of the programs offered: not only do the instructors have exceptional knowledge, but they also have been students for many years. Some people (myself included!) travel from all over the US, as well as Europe to train here. But even if your martial arts goals are more modest, or you are just beginning your journey, you will find a clean, well appointed school with a real feeling of camaraderie and excellent teaching staff. read more

We have 2 kids who have taken kung fu here for nearly 3 years and they have benefited tremendously from it. They learn many ways of defending themselves, gain self-confidence and improve many aspects of their physical well-being (strength, flexibility, etc.) and learn discipline and self-motivation. I have been a Tai Chi student at US Kuoshu Academy for three years now, and I cannot say enough good things about them. The Tai Chi curriculum begins with the Yang Style Long Form, but ultimately incorporates Pushing Hands and a variety of weapon forms. The instructors are all exceptional, both in terms of their knowledge and their teaching skills, and the program allows students to progress at whatever pace suits them. Classes offer a combination of group and individual work, with an excellent student-teacher ratio. Classes are available at a variety of days and times during the week, including evenings and weekends. Students also have the opportunity to schedule one-on-one private lessons with a single instructor approximately every other month at no additional cost. Any student who does not take advantage of the private lessons is missing out on a chance to really deepen their understanding of Tai Chi and improve their form. In the Tai Chi program, competing in tournaments is encouraged, but not required. Students who do compete will get a lot of help and support from every instructor at the school. No matter what your level of skill or experience, US Kuoshu Academy is an exceptional school with instructors who really go the extra mile to make sure students are getting the most out of their lessons. read more

That should tell you just how wonderful the program and the staff are. The experience of learning Tai Chi at this school has been simply life changing.
