I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school. I was greeted by a super nice employee at the store who could have been the owner. It's an Eastern European focused market and deli and they have some great items. A lot of them are low on preservatives and when possible, sourced from somewhere in Canada. There are a lot of meats, fish, frozen food items and caviar. They have a lot of pre packaged snacks and drinks that come from overseas. They even have a local baker who provides them with sour dough daily! I heard they sell out every morning so get their early if you want some really fresh sour dough. I ended up leaving with some frozen perogies made from Montreal and some European Fanta. I later met her friendly husband, from Poland and he is said to be in charge of all the meats. They all looked amazing! I bought a few things and one thing from the meat case was a spicy meat stick. Not all meat sticks are made alike! Yummy! The store was SO clean and new feeling. Everything was well appointed and I went around a few times to see everything. Lots of spices. I bought some spicy spices of course, some perogies, tomato paste, high end dried pasta. Many things are imported, some items are CDN from TO, Montreal and of course there are some homemade things in the deli. There are even a few chairs and tables inside if you want to have lunch here. So, influences from Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Italy - this place has you covered. Even fresh caviar! Little frozen cheesecake ice cream bars! Needless to say, a gem, I'll be back.

This Loblaws is a lot swankier than other Loblaws in Ottawa. They have a fancy patisserie area…read morewhere you can see staff making pastries and decorating cakes. Their selection of baked goods is greater than other Loblaws. They also have a Starbucks inside. Their prepared foods area is also a lot nicer looking than other locations. This Loblaws is huge. There's a big Joe Fresh clothing section. They have a good cheese section. Their floral section is also good, like they have lots of flowers, not just some wilted carnations like at some smaller locations. This location reminds me a lot of the present-day Loblaws on St. Clair Avenue West at Bathurst Street in Toronto. I say present-day because most of my memories of that Loblaws are from when I was a kid and they definitely did renovations since then, because it wasn't much to look at back then, but is super nice now, lol. There is a special place in my heart for the above Toronto Loblaws, so that may contribute to why I really like this Loblaws in Barrhaven. I'm rarely in Barrhaven, but the times that I've been to this Loblaws I've scored some great sales. They have lots of marked down items (50% off) either because they are short-dated or they are discontinued or they didn't sell well. Fortunately for me, I have weird tastes, lol, so I tend to like things that don't sell well, like that wacky chip flavour no one liked, bring it on! That crazy ice cream flavour? Yum yum! And short dated? No problem! I don't like to delay gratification when it comes to food, I mean sometimes packages barely make it to my car before they are opened and my mouth is full, haha. T&T stands for Tina & Tiffany, after the founder's 2 daughters. T&T are also the initials of 2 early investors as well. You can find this market in the same plaza as Mary Brown's Chicken & Taters with plenty of parking. I love shopping at T&T Supermarket with such a vast selection of fresh produce, seafood/ meat, dried and fresh noodles, bakery goods, teas, premade foods/ meals, etc (there is also a hot food bar you can pick from and serve yourself and pay by the weight). My husband and I stopped by this particular location this afternoon. It was pretty busy, but that was expected on a Saturday. We got our cart (requires $1 to use but you will get it back after you return it) and then went inside to shop. Coming from Montreal and shopping there earlier this week, I was surprised to find that some of the same items at this location actually cost a little more. For example, I was looking for this special Hong Kong Milk Tea bag that saw that it cost $1 more for the box than at the location in Montreal. I like that this market is clean and does not have that familiar smell that some Asian markets may have. Aisles are wide enough to navigate your cart through and each aisle is labeled accordingly to help shoppers find where they may want to shop in. During this shopping visit, my husband and I ended up purchasing a live lobster. He really wanted to get some seafood during our trip and also that the vacation rental we are staying in has a good size steamer in the kitchen and figured it would be good to cook it while we are here. For lobster and crabs, you pick the one you want and place it in one of the plastic baskets, then you can bring it up to the employee behind the seafood counter and they will weight it for you, bag it and place a price sticker on it for you. I like that there is a self check out area, as the line for that went by so much faster than the other lines. Overall, a positive experience and would frequent this location if I lived here.

The lady making my sandwich asked what kind of condiment I wanted and pointed to the three types of mustard (regular, medium and hot Dijon). I chose the medium and before I could stop her she also added mayonnaise to my sandwich after adding the mustard. It wasn't an excessive amount, so I didn't say anything, lol. The deli meats are sliced to order. The amount was satisfactory. Not too generous, but not stingy. The lady making my sandwich was wearing one glove, but used both hands to make the sandwich :/ She was courteous and efficient though. The sandwich was tasty but I feel like it was something I could have made at home. 3.5 stars for the sandwich but rounding up since they sell grocery items that are harder to find elsewhere in the city. The deli sells a lot of imported foods, mostly from Eastern Europe, but also Central Europe. Prices were reasonable for imported goods. They are located in a strip mall. Lots of free parking.
