So I've not been to Dunn's in 15 years, but my work wanted to do a nice breakfast out so we went to Dunn's. The service was okay, the server handled our table of 11 pretty well, everyone's order was correct and didn't take long at all. I had the scrambled eggs and bacon and it was what you'd expect, a diner breakfast. I'd eat here again for breakfast if I was in the area, it also seemed to be reasonably priced considering the location. Overall I left full and happy, the ketchup though had that, left out of the fridge vinegaryness I am not a fan of but beyond that nothing to complain about. read more

OVERVIEW: -Solid food, but nothing particularly special or worth going out of your way for. ARRIVAL: -I was in Ottawa from nyc for a couple days for work in September of 2022 (last year). Google maps and several other places still listed it as 24-hour. I showed up around 11pm the night before, found out they were closed, and saw the hours posted on the door. FOOD/DRINK: -I had the Reuben w/ home fries because I wanted to try some of their "famous" smoked meet. -The sandwich tasted good and was a good amount of food for the price, but overall the quality was very average. The meat was sliced super thin, had a rubbery texture, and did not have a lot of flavor. -The home fries I had with the Reuben were above average though: perfectly crispy cubes of potato with soft,fluffy insides. SERVICE: -Servers were friendly and capable. ATMOSPHERE: -It's sort of like a mix of a sports bar and a diner. There are tons of tables and booths like a diner or chain restaurant, but with decor and style more like a bar. -The only real problem with my experience here is that there were wasps flying around my table. I was sat near a window and it was a nice day so all the doors and big windows were open. I know they were wasps because there were several of them, they landed on my table a few times, and I killed one. I know there's not a lot a restaurant can do about flying bugs like that, but they were there when I arrived and they were there an hour later when I left. I don't understand how no one noticed them or why they would still sit me near a window if they did. Maybe they mistook them for flies or bees, but either way someone could have offered to move me when they saw there were so many bugs flying around my area. One of the servers even commented on them as he walked by and then opened up more windows. I assume he was trying to give the wasps more ways to leave, but it just let in more. Okay so this is what it is..doesn't pretend to be fancy sxzhmancy..it's a diner deli and that's the vibe through and through. Curly fries or straight, the nion rings,deli favourites and the smoked meat. Rye is soft and the portions are good and I find the location very kid friendly. In the past I'd come here for breakfast. That was fine for what it was, until the restaurant pulled the special. ... Yesterday was Canada Day and I had toured the Byward Market a couple times trying to decide where to eat. .. I was hungry, so I opted for Dunns. They had a limited Canada Day menu, so I ordered the fish and chips. Let's just say that I won't make that mistake again! I also won't permit Madyson to serve me anymore, as she was more interested in attending to the family table beside me. Not once did she check with me to see if I was happy with my meal - which I wasn't! There is barely any fish inside that crunchy batter. Fries were OK, but still - $21 for OK fries and mediocre fish. The only reason I ate it was because I was damn hungry. Normally I would have returned the order! I expressed my feelings with Madyson when she delivered the bill. I still paid, however, NO TIP!! Stopped into Dunn's a few times while staying at the Marriott Courthouse across the street in October. First time in, I was with a group of 10 for lunch. Service was friendly. Most of the orders were filled correctly. If not, they were adjusted accordingly. I had the Reuben with fries and gravy which came with no gravy. They brought it eventually. The sandwich was pretty good. It looked to be thrown together with the meat and toppings anything buy evenly distributed within the slices. That seemed to be a theme around the table. My second visit was at 2:30am after a bit of drinking. The breakfast poutine sounded amazing at the time, and tasted amazing at the time. I'll try not to do that one again. My third time was at midnight. A few tables were occupied and we sat at the bar. Service was good, as was my Bizou Bizou burger. Recap - This is not a health-food joint. We went for breakfast on Sunday July 21st around 10am. There was no line up when we arrived. (That should have a telltale sign.) The only server ushered us to a table next to the bar and went off to continue serving his tables. We were waiting approximately 15 minutes with no interaction from anyone. We weren't asked if we wanted a coffee or juice. Nothing - we were ghosted. Another server did fly into the restaurant about 10 minutes into our visit. Soon afterwards she did come to take our drink orders. 2 coffees and and 2 teas. The individuals that had the coffees said it tasted burnt and stale. I had a tea with a leaky teapot. When I tried to pour it I got more tea on the table than in my cup. I wasn't very impressed by this. Sadly, our food wasn't much better. 2 of us had eggs benedict - the other 3 had (2 egg breakfast overeasy.) Both of the 2 eggs of my eggs benedict were hard poached so it really wasn't eggs benedict. As for the 6 over easy eggs - 3 of them had hard centres. Again, not over easy eggs. It was a truly disappointing meal. When we told server all she could say was "oh, I'm sorry about that." She didn't offer any solution or to get the manager. Each of the meals were approx $20.00 so it was an expensive and unsatisfying experience. I had previously visited the Dunn's on Elgin for breakfast on a Saturday and it was a wonderful experience. I thought that as it was a Dunn's it would be the same experience. I was mistaken!! I wouldn't recommend this place for breakfast EVER. Lunch or dinner might be a different situation but it appears that breakfast isn't their strong suit. I have even addressed the issue with the owner? / manager last time I was there (April 2022) and he brushed me off. It is NOT the authentic Dunn's smoked meat available at Dunn's in Montreal. None of the Dunn's franchises served the original (formerly in Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto). The ONLY one that did was in Vancouver and that franchisee shut down during Covid. That is not to say a patron of this place won't enjoy what you will be served; you very well might. BUT, if one truly expects the genuine downtown Montreal (or any of Montreal's locations) quality / style, you won't find it in Ottawa. Not even close. read more

I went to get some groceries this morning before work and saw there was a breakfast special. I dropped on for the 3.99 special between 6am and 11am. I was seated immediately and they took my order. The special with a coffee is somewhere between $6-$7. Breakfast arrived quickly and I had a few bites. I never thought I would give a low rating for breakfast but this place was pretty bad this morning. The bacon was bad. Thin strips that were flavourless...well maybe tasted of cooking oil. The potatoes were really starchy, warm and a few I bit into tasted slightly sour. On a side note, to the 2 guys behind me who were talking about porn...that's fine and all but when you're sitting across from each other and decide to browse porn on your phone in a restaurant...actually I don't even know what to say. After a more than terrible night at the club, a few of us wanted to do something to replace our memories of earlier on in the night, so we came to Dunn's at around 2am. It was packed with people, mostly from the bars. I had never been to this location before and it was actually quite large. We were seated right away and I have to say that our waiter was fantastic! He served us quickly, and was very friendly and funny throughout the whole time we were there. My friend and I ordered their breakfast. She had two eggs sunny-side up, with whole wheat bread and ham. I ordered my eggs fried, with rye bread and bacon, and I substituted my home fries for poutine. I didn't realize that my fried eggs weren't sunny-side up like my friend's, and I was kind of disappointed, but it was my fault for not clarifying. My friend's ham seemed like sliced deli ham that was heated up in a pan, but my bacon was thin and crispy. My poutine was made with home fries instead of fries, and was actually quite good. The breakfast plates also came with an orange and kiwi slice, which was great to cut the grease, and we ordered whole pickles on the side.. just because. My boyfriend ordered a club sandwich, and it came with fries - a lot of fries, that is. He ended up just being all about the fries and took the sandwich home.. which we are currently eating right now, the morning after. It's really tasty now, and it definitely would have been even better last night. The only problem I had was the washrooms. The stairway alone smelled like pee, and the stall doors didn't even close, much less lock. Another girl even waved to me through the space in the door while I was waiting for a stall to be free, since two of them were already occupied and the third one looked like someone's butt exploded. Recommended as the Late Night fill-er-up destination this 24-hour Deli had it's share of rowdy sketchy drunk passer-bys which didn't make sense for the staff to sit everyone at the corner while windows-open so disturbing idiots can ruin good meals for customers. Yes, it's a good space to people-watch but not all people are worth watching. The Dude staff was quite friendly while I notice the Lady was less so. I was staying at the Le Germain hotel for a work conference last week and wanted a bigger breakfast than what was provided in their 'included' one, so walked here two days in the frigid cold. There is nothing special about the place, but I knew it would be satisfying and filling, and it was. Their breakfast menu doesn't seem to be on the website for me to check prices, but had the breakfast club one day, and their eggs benny on a bagel the other day. Both were decent, with side of home fries. Friendly service. I was the only customer one day, and the 2nd customer the other, quite early in the morning though. How can this restaurant only have 2 1/2 stars? Dunn's is a famous Montreal brand. They even have pictures of the location that used to be on Ste Catherine Street on their menus. I remember going there when I lived in Gatineau, and I also stopped by when I took a business trip to Ottawa. When I explained that I was up from Toronto and had a cab waiting to take me to the bus station, they got a Smoked Meat sandwich with fries and a pickle ready for me in no time. It was very nice of them to rush my order through and understand the situation. I enjoyed eating it before I took the bus home. This is a landmark and Ottawa is very lucky to have such a good restaurant. The next time I'm in Ottawa, I'll probably stop by there again. read more

When we came into this place on New Year's Eve it was DEAD. I think only 1 person was in the whole place. We got sat right away and the server was attentive and answered all our questions on recommendations on food options. I liked how they had a wide variety of options for everyone. I just moved downtown a few weeks ago, and Dunn's is a short walk away. I've already found myself visiting multiple times thanks to good service, very fair prices and delicious food. I like that Dunn's has the feeling of eating outside without actually eating outside. You can get a nice breeze and fresh air without having to burn up in the sun. Everything I've tried on the menu has been great so far. I would definitely recommend this place to any group of friends looking for good cheap eats. read more

I give it 3 stars. Me and my man went there for lunch. We ordered a smoked meat sandwich, which my guy enjoyed, and an Expo 67 burger. We wanted an appetizer, but our server convinced us orherwise; enormous menu, but apparently impossible to have an appetizer for a decent price . The food was good, except the bacon in my Expo 67 burger could have been crispy; not raw. And nothing was special about this burger, unfortunately! I asked for a poutine for my side order . When the server arrived with our food, he said the kitchen messed up; was it ok if I had fries instead of a poutine?? He never checked up on us after the food was delivered, and we had to wait at reception to get our bill... aarrgghh... decent food. Not so decent service. Dunn and Dunn, this is the place to go to sober up after hitting clubs or to read a paper and have a quiet breakfast. Overall my experiences at Dunns have been pleasant all except the near death experiences I have when I head toward the restroom, watch that first step - -Seriously its like a break neck doozy. I asked where the restroom was they told me just around the corner, groggily I walked to the corner where the young waiter had pointed me. Turned the corner where I would have expected to be greeted with a hallway but paused mid step with my foot dangling over the cliffs of insanity. When you turn the corner its not a hallway but a long steep stairwell and in most establishment you have a few feet of warning. Not here nope. Its turn and burn if you are not paying attention. My first thought was very Amelia as I walked down the stairs; I wonder how many deaths have occurred on these stairs, 7 maybe? How about broken bones? That has to be at least in the double digits. To get the full dunns experience go at 2:30 AM on a Friday and watch the wildlife. read more

Dunn's Of the 3 locations in Ottawa this location is the weakest link... Personally if going to this location I would only recommend ordering what Dunn's is known for and that is 'Smoke Meat' . The super at $15.99 is a large sandwich with fries, coleslaw, pickle and pop. You also can order at $17.99 the same with a draft beer. The smoke meat has good flavor and is plentiful on all sandwiches. Other items that our group tried Club Sandwich which was real chicken but the cook put what appeared to be a full jar of mayo on the sandwich. By doing this the sandwich was a soggy mess and unless you have some sort of mayo fetish it was just gross. This must be standard practice at this restaurant as when pointed out to our waitress she said that is the way it should come. We asked to speak to the manager but he or she couldn't be bothered to come to our table. The burger another person ordered had a strange taste which looking at the burger you could see the burnt grill marks. I think it must have been what was cooked on the grill before the burger as well because it was burnt. They had a wide selection of desserts but none of us ordered them mostly because of the open concept. They have garage doors that they open up so when sitting beside you get the bugs, smokers walking down the street, bus fumes etc.... Our waitress wasn't impressive mainly because of attitude as she did provide alright service getting the order, delivery and got the bill over to us when asked. I absolutely love Dunn's - but this place is actually selling other branded meet! No kidding! They are a dunns franchise that sells another brand of smoked meet and only after we ordered they told us. I eat at Dunn's all over Canada and never seen this. When I receive the food I could immediately tell it was not Dunn's food. The poutine was also completely odd. From the fries, the gravy etc was off. The curds seemed ok.... the smoked meet club was not well build and the meet.... so disappointing. I have my family from Mexico in Canada, we came to Ottawa driving from toronto and of all the awesome eats on the byward market - I suggested Dunn's to have a good poutine and smoke meet as a Canadian staple. I stay at the hotel across the street and typically come here late at night, but the service is usually better later. When I was in Ottawa for the first and only time to date, I stayed downtown. I walked to the Byward Market which is was a sweet area. I was deciding on where to eat. I came across Dunn's. I didn't know what to try, so I had the hot dog poutine. It's not poutine on a hot dog. Although that would be amazing. It was hot dogs in poutine. I enjoyed it. The place was reasonably priced. The waitress was helpful when it came to answering my question about the hot dog poutine. It took a little bit to get seated, but that didn't effect the overall experience. My appetite is lesser than the average person's appetite so I felt that the portion sizes were a little too big. Everything was delicious though! I ate here on March 29th at 8:30pm and I felt bad for the server who was working at the time. I liked his multitasking skills, he was seating people to one table, serving food to another and cleaning another. He was also running food to three tables at a time, since he was all by himself I had to tip him 15%. Aside from the service, the food was very delicious (even though the portions were bigger than what I'm used to) I haven't ordered breakfast from here because they don't serve my favorite breakfast, which is shakshuka. read more
