They have more selection on gourmet foods than the smaller salumerias nearby but no cheese or charcuterie. Their prices were very reasonable, and the staff were friendly.

It as a cool-ish early fall night, so we were thinking soup and bread. They told us the soup of the day was bean and pasta soup (pasta fasciul- which we typically love so we were excited!) so we ordered three for our group of four. We also order several desserts. The takeout total was equal to or more than it would have cost us to sit down in a restaurant and order off the menu. When we got to the house and excitedly opened the containers of soup, we were surprised to find something quite different from what was expected- it was basically canned refried beans mixed with pasta- it was partially solidified and because they put it in a paper to go container instead of a soup container it had absorbed into the container as well. Honestly, it wasn't great. We also got one of their pizzas which was cold and stuck to the top of the box, so by the time we ate it was more unappetizing. We didn't go back. Too bad, it gets amazing reviews otherwise. The thing was that the guy behind the register was somewhat arrogant and unhelpful- he knew full well what we were getting and that it wasn't what we were thinking and did not guide us any differently. So sorry we wasted one of our precious vacation meal choices on this place. It turned out to be the worst meal of our 16 day trip - every other meal we had was spectacular.

This was the most amazing meal we ate in three weeks in Italy -- and we ate loads of great food…read more L'Evangelista is a vey upscale restaurant on a quiet street a block off the main pedestrian thoroughfare. While it follows the form of apertivo, primi, segundi, dolci, this is not traditional Italian cuisine but what I've seen termed as "Italian contemporary cuisine." That means world class, innovative food. And we loved it. Simone Ferrigno, the manager, greeted us when we arrived and seated us at an elegantly laid out table. We ordered wine and our food, and the show began with beautiful dish after beautiful dish. And fabulous wines. We chatted with the German couple at the next table who had ordered the vegan tasting menu and they were in heaven. Alas I cannot for the life of me find the receipt with the names of the dishes we ordered. If I find it, I'll update my review. I'll just say this, exquisite food, world-class service in a beautiful ambience. After we had paid our bill (thank goodness the dollar is up relative to the Euro) and we started walking away, Simone ran after us to ask how our experience was and to thank us for our patronage. Note: A reservation is essential at L'Evangelista. I just noticed that Yelp has two Euro symbols to indicate the price is moderate. I'd actually give it four Euro symbols. L'Evangelista is not for you if you're on a tight a budget.

It was a bit too cool once the sun went down, so we moved inside. Everything was excellent, Matzo Ball soup, lamb chops, hummus with mushrooms. Nice service. While the food wasn't bad, it didn't make good on the promise of a different kind of cuisine in Venice. The food was tasty enough, but the eggplant and pasta were both just solid versions of dishes readily available throughout the city. The eggplant was touted as a signature dish, but was merely an echo of others throughout the area. Aside from the hint of tahini it would be indistinguishable. Similarly, the tagliatelle pasta with salmon did little to make itself memorable. I believe that these dishes reflect the Kosher dining experience, but our high hopes were nonetheless dashed by their mediocrity. Gam Gam is not a breath of fresh air, although maybe we would have been happier had we thought of it as just another restaurant. After all, tomato sauce makes almost anything delicious.
