Room Key Given to Occupied Room, Phone Stolen, No Help This was actually our second time staying at Banana Bungalow. Our first stay was positive, which is why we came back. During that first visit, the staff were friendly and welcoming, especially Kiki, who was extremely nice. There were social events like ping pong, karaoke, and a $15 dinner with all-you-can-drink, the room was clean, and we had no issues. Another staff member whose name I unfortunately don't remember was also very kind and helpful. Unfortunately, our second stay was the complete opposite. First, Claudia at the front desk gave us a key to a room that was already occupied. My boyfriend and I opened the door thinking we were entering our private room, only to walk in on a strange man who was already staying there. That is a serious security and privacy failure. The area immediately outside the property also felt unsafe, with homeless encampments around the property and no visible security guard on site. For a hostel/motel in that location, guest safety and property security should be taken much more seriously. Later that night, while I was taking a shower, my boyfriend was right outside our room reading paperwork and using his phone. Within about 30 minutes, his phone disappeared. We searched everywhere and could not find it. About 30-45 minutes later, we were able to track the phone to Hollywood and Vine, roughly four blocks away from the hostel. Claudia was working when the phone went missing. The next morning, April was at reception, and when we asked for help reviewing the security camera footage, she was dismissive, unprofessional, and refused to help in any meaningful way. She actually said, "I can look, but I don't have to right now," even though we were trying to recover a stolen phone and understand what happened on the property. She said she was working reception, but from what we could see, she was just sitting there waiting for people to come in and simply did not want to check the cameras. Between being given access to an occupied room, the lack of visible security, the conditions immediately outside the property, having property stolen during our stay, and receiving no meaningful help afterward, this place felt unsafe, careless, and poorly managed. The contrast between our first and second stay was honestly shocking. I would strongly warn other guests to avoid staying here unless management makes serious changes to how they handle security, room access, and guest complaints. I am willing to update this review if Banana Bungalow management follows up, reviews the available footage, and makes a genuine effort to help resolve this issue. Want sleep? Do. Not. Stay. Here. I booked through Expedia for one night -- a Tuesday. Nowhere in the property description did it say there is a "party" in the courtyard that begins at 8:30pm. Screaming, singing, shouting. Slamming doors. The way the property is shaped, there is no avoiding the noise. The u-shape of the rooms means that almost every room opens onto the courtyard. Had I known this would be going on, I definitely wouldn't have booked here. On a weekend, I might understand it a bit more... but a Tuesday? The property needs to figure out what it wants to be: a budget-friendly hotel or a frat house. The location is convenient to Hollywood... but I'm not sure why you would want to be in Hollywood these days with the increasing crime rate and growing population of unhoused. The property is just on the outskirts of where things might get a little rough, in my opinion. As I was walking from the west down Hollywood Blvd, about a block and a half before I reached the hotel, a gentleman reached down into his sock, pulled out a knife, and proceeded to walk down the street with it cupped in his hand. The Salvation Army is right across the street, so take note if you walk on that side, you may be asked for money by those in line, like I was. Hollywood was cleaning up for a while, but there are some large tent camps just off Hollywood Blvd, about two blocks to the west. The two positive things about the property: - fast internet - room was clean - affordable on site parking I wouldn't ever stay here again - unless I wanted to party and not sleep. I've stayed in plenty of hostels around Europe and have found that the common areas don't affect the rooms. That's not the case here. I booked a private room for a reason. Do. Not. Recommend. Never again. Note: I did call to ask about the noise just before 10pm. I was told it would last until 11pm. It was definitely still going at eleven. They use the low price to get you to show up and then offer a single room for $108. An international passport and proof of continued travel are required. I stayed here for New Years!! It was a great stay and very good for the price. They have a nice Thai restaurant and nail shop conveniently located next door. My only gripe is that, you are several feet from a homeless tent encampment. Other than that, this place is a total vibe. The people are interesting! Travelers from all over the world stay there! So, two girls from the deep south ventured to Hollywood, California to catch David Gilmour/Pink Floyd- in the last show they would ever play in the United States. I booked through Priceline, as a "package". I had been to LA before, my daughter had not. Upon arrival, I took the wrong way to the Hotel, which meant I drove through some highly un-desirable areas of LA, before reaching our Banana Bungalow destination. My daughter was so overwhelmed (and mind you- she's traveled the WORLD...) that she began vomiting from such a culture change from our small Florida beach town, to Los Angeles. Literally. She was so over-stimulated, she was sick the entire first day. When we arrived at the hotel, we immediately were concerned, just due to the location, and outward appearance. In fact, we were so freaked out when we arrived to the hotel, I called Priceline to try and change hotels. This was not possible, because unbeknownst to us, the World Series was underway- lol. So, we decided to drive around until check in time, and we would decide what to do, after we were able to get in, and see the room. Upon arrival, you are met with an electric "privacy" gate. Once in, we parked (you pay 11 bucks a day, and will have a spot for each day you pay- totally, 100% worth it- because otherwise, I have no idea where you'd park- there is literally no place else). Once in, we realized it was "fine"- at least "tolerable". There was a fridge, the rooms a/c worked great, the place was super clean. Once we finally could re-group and felt better that we wouldn't have to move hotels, we ventured out, right at dusk. When we walked out of our hotel room, the place had totally transformed. TV's were on, there was a little mini- club, colorful lights, pool table, etc- it was literally like a little mini- club/bar. The atmosphere was adorable. We ended up LOVING this place. So, this was DEF a lesson to not judge a book by it's cover- it was a GREAT PLACE, and we will DEF come back. Don't let the location or the outside scare you- it was perfectly safe, behind locked doors and a gate, and the place has an awesome vibe. The people were super cool, and our stay was fantastic. I traveled 3 hours plus for a concert at the Fonda theater, saw that this hotel/hostel had a good amount of positive reviews. For the price it seemed more then fair. I booked 4 weeks ahead, a "deluxe double room". Perfect, or so I thought. Paid. Done. Right? Wrong. The day comes and my booking gets canceled the day of with no explanation given. Spoke to the front desk then she transferred me over to a "manager" then he says he could transfer me to a manager, thought he was the manager. The location is good. Close to shops, walk of fame, etc. BUT, I just got bedbugs in my room. They have to transfer me to the other room. So, I have to wash all my clothes to make sure the other room won't get infested also.. I also have to bomb the old room myself (because the staff doesn't know how to use it) since I can not wash my luggage and backpack.. BUT, when I moved into my new room, there was a sh*t on my bedside table. I was disappointed and lost my appetite since I feel like the poop smell was still lingering in my room even after asking the staff to take it out of my room... I can hardly sleep at night with my itching body.. I canceled my tour for a day and went to CVS and asked what can help me with it... After all the suffering during my stay? I'm giving this place five stars. Not, because it's a five star hotel, it's because what they do offer, is on point. This is the forth time I've stayed here. I always book a room with a kitchenette and it's always spotlessly clean , nothing fancy ,but clean. The kitchen comes with some plates and glasses and a small pan. Nice size fridge, large bathtub. I like the most about this property is the fact that you park inside the perimeter. Excellent value. Breakfast is nice. Hot coffee and some snacks's. read more

#1 complaint: nothing on the website indicated I would be up at 11pm listening to drunken karaoke. Lots of hostels describe themselves as 'youth hostels' and lots of hostels have on site social events but I've never had this experience. Karaoke night started at 10pm in the courtyard where every room is subjected to the noise. Had the website had some schedule or calendar posted I would have known this was not the place for me and booked somewhere else. Room was fine -we booked a private room. It was large with a full kitchen and full bath. Good location. Security seems minimal at best, which would concern me more if I were sharing a room with strangers. Staff was mediocre - asked for help with an issue in our room and never heard back. Breakfast was milk, OJ, cold cereal, instant oatmeal, sandwich bread for toast and one large jar each of peanut butter, nutella, and jam all tossed out onto the tikki bar with cheep Styrofoam bowls and paper plates. Milk wasn't even on ice. We've stayed in many hostels and cheap hotels and this was totally disappointing. If you are looking for a party this is the place. If you are looking for a place to sleep and get some breakfast, look somewhere else. Would go with 2.5 if possible. read more

My review is for a private bedroom with a Queen size bed (plus a bunk bed we didn't even know we would have), a kitchen and private bathroom so I am not reviewing on the experience of their shared dorms. Stepping into the colorful room was like taking a blast into a Rugrats cartoon. We loved it! There was splashes of color at every turn. We also had AC plus an overhead fan above our bed which helped with the So Cal weather. Parking can be a little tight, but we always found a spot. Checking in was a breeze as well as checking out. Make sure you don't lose your room key because they're a tad bit strict on you returning them all when leaving. The shower pressure was perfect. They don't have the best shampoo, so if you have a lot of hair like I do, bring your own. We felt perfectly safe in this hotel even though there was a bit of homeless activity outside. I stayed in a private room (non-smoking room). Smoking smell is in the room. The room next to us keep smoking that causes smell coming into my room. No one is doing the cleaning. Staff provided a note on the second day for the cleaner but no one has double checked. So No CLEANING!! Which I have paid for it. Car park is always full. The staff provided an inaccurate map. Some streets cannot park at all time. Some streets cannot park overnight. But they will tell you all those areas you can park your car. Area around has a lot of beggars around. I don't feel safe. First of all, I'll say that if you're not used to/not okay with homeless people, I don't know why you're staying near the walk of fame, or in Hollywood in general. Go elsewhere. Have some common sense. Area was as expected. In keeping with many motel setups in LA, the entrance/exit is only sized for one low(ish) clearance vehicle, and the parking was very close-quarters (absolutely not my favorite). With some careful squeezing and my husband as ground-guide, we parked. We immediately noted the rec area: pool table, Foosball table, in-wall DVD player and TV, stereo. Nice. The young men who coordinated the functions were very friendly and informative (though, to be honest, the young lady who checked us in/out had a bit of an attitude problem). Our room came with a cute kitchenette (with a pocket door for the other reviewers who weren't exactly bright enough to figure out how doors work). The room itself was nice. It was very clean, decorated brightly, bed comfort was decent, shower volume was good. What sweetened the pot was the decor throughout the grounds and the overall comradery. The other guests were from a variety of different countries so initializing conversation tended to be a little unorthodox, but everyone relaxed and loosened up after feeling each other out a bit. There was a social function in the evening that was coordinated by the hotel. Food, drink, music. My husband and I tend to be wallflowers, but we couldn't help but be enveloped in the social vibe. Around 11pm, the majority of the guests moved the party to a nearby club, which gave everyone else a chance to head off to bed peacefully. All in all, everyone had a great night. The breakfast the next morning was simple. I couldn't believe how generous and nice the staff and guests were. I understand that this is a hostel and certain things are to be expected, but this place was nothing like what is advertised on the website. The pictures look nothing like the rooms which are incredibly cramped, extremely unsanitary, and covered in random belongings and dirt. There was a constant smell of urine and the room was damp. The bathroom looks like it hadn't been cleaned for year and the walls and floor were always wet. The mattresses were stained and ripped, and I'm not even sure the linens they give you to make your bed are clean. The staff was rude and not helpful. We were supposed to be picked up at the airport by a shuttle that never came, and we were afraid to take the one that was supposed to take us to Santa Monica. My key card did not work, and everyones IDs and credit card information are just sitting on the deskNeedless to say, we only stayed one night out of the five we had booked. Could not warn people enough. There are better options out there I would rather pay to sleep on the street. read more

We had a bad experience when a group pf 3 middle aged guys snuck to our room on our 2nd night. They were drunk and loud. We couldn't sleep because they were being creepy staring at us while sleeping. We were the only girls in the dorm room but all of our roommates were very nice to us. These 3 creepy men made us feel uncomfortable so we decide to move to another room. Booked this place on a recommendation from a client, for a 3-night stay to see one of my favorite bands. I clearly didn't read the reviews closely or at all. Needless to say, I was excited to be staying right on the strip 20 minutes from the venue - the location was great for getting around. But... Don't plan on getting a good rest here. My #1 complaint would be noise levels. I've stayed in several youth/budget hostels before, but this is definitely a PARTY HOSTEL. If that's your "vibe" or if you're a heavy sleeper, great, but I was surprised by the lack of rules/supervision at their free evening events. Pretty sure their target market just comes for the free booze (don't get me wrong, I'm usually all for that but it just felt...weird). They cart *most* people out to the club by 11pm, but there's events & drinking happening every night starting around 8; and every night, a group lingered until nearly 2am, still drinking, chatting/shouting and playing music/pingpong/whatever in the open courtyard with no staff present/caring. Like, you could at least keep them all in the bar if they choose to stay? The windows are single-pane and don't keep any noise out. I was put on the top floor right above the vehicle entrance and there was definitely some sort of machinery running underneath me - also, the mini fridge in my room was pretty loud (though it *was* cold enough to freeze the food I bought). Mornings are no exception. The morning after my concert, I was woken up at 7am by music playing and people chatting loudly. I don't really think there is any noise curfew in place. Any time I thought "Hey, I'd like to take a nap after hoofing it around Hollywood all day" - NOPE. I had high hopes for this place, but not being able to get any rest really dulled its shine. Their websites are misleading at best (Is it Vibe? Is it Banana Bungalow? Who cares). Nobody answered at either of the phone numbers I was instructed to call if I was going to check in after 6pm - when I emailed them, I got a "no problem, we're open 24 hours" response. Okay then. Just a lot of mixed messages and lost sleep. It seems like a cool place to stay, but trust me when I say that the "laid-back vibe" they advertise is really just a free for all for young travellers. I'm sticking with Samesun from now on. I'm also a little itchy, but I'm hoping that's just due to the *reading* about bedbugs. There were definitely flies, etc hovering around doorways. The extra star is for the hot shower I was able to take, and for the hot coffee available with non-dairy options (not on ice, of course), at the tiki lounge that would be real cute if the chairs weren't always put up. It's advertised as being cool & hip but just comes across as cheap, uninviting and underutilized IRL. Not worth over $100 a night in my humble opinion. If I'd known there was absolutely no benefit to a private room, I wouldn't have booked one. read more

Seriously, I haven't stayed in a hostel since Japan but this place certainly impressed me. Since I was on a crazy work trip I decided that it would be worth it to have my own private room. For a very affordable $69 a night I got the : "small" room but this room was bigger than my studio senior year of college! It had a full sized bed and a twin bed as well as satellite television and a full kitchen. We're not talking a tiny kitchenette; I mean, full kitchen with stove, oven, microwave, refigerator, and table. The staff was really nice, though quite busy. I must have checked in during peak time because there was a line and the phone was ringing off the hook. Can't blame 'em, the place is hot! There is a theater like room with a big screen and comfy seats, a bar, pool table, foosball, ping pong table, basketball court, tiki garden, laundry, courtesy computers and free wifi! Seriously, there may have been more I just didn't really have the time to explore. The hostel offers free tours of Hollyd, Beverly HIlls, stars homes/film locations, VEnice Beach and more! And every night there are fun activities like comedy shows, free beer, movie nights, karaoke and more. Next time I come to LA, I'm definitely staying here again! read more

We knew we were in a for a treat when we were greeted by a drunk japanese guy at the front desk. There are many great reasons to come to BANANA bungalow. One main reason is the extraordinary and mature staff who showed significant care towards us even willing to offer us extra beds on the top floor where only staff members were allowed. The workers definitely mingled with their customers and treated us with extra attention. They were kind and considerate making sure that everyone was having a great time- even dropping us to our rooms at the end. Occasionally the staff members would introduce customers to their little, banana friends. Also, there's a quaint place to use the sparkling clean toilets in the back with organic toilet paper. The people who stay in banana bungalow are very diverse ranging from guys who dates models and works in the Hollywood industry, spunky dancers who loves to show the world a little too much of themselves, as well as DJs who are single and ready to mingle with the crowd. Overall to sum up the party house bungalow perfect for young adults, there was a slight breeze in the open, brown specks spewing out of a volcano decoration, the lights were off outside, and it was a great way to stay in shape! read more

After a week of driving across the country ( from ATL)and checking out different places on the way to Los Angeles where I planned to spend a week. I stopped in OKC, Little Rock, Lake Tucumcari, NM, and a few other places where I was treated with respect. When I called the Banana Bungalow to find a dorm room for ONE WEEK. I was quizzed, doubted, treated like a vagrant, and ultimately told my business was not welcome. The guy on the phone initially told me I needed proof of travel like plane or bus tickets, and I explained that I had driven and could show my car and license as proof. He hesitated and then as if I was lying asked if I had driven from Atlanta.. YES ASSHOLE I DID. He then had the nerve to ask me, "Well, are you going back?". I was appalled but still put up with this bs, because I AM A WEARY TRAVELER LOOKING FOR A CHEAP DORM BED. I ask what else would he need and he says he will consult with management. After a brief hold, he comes back to the phone and says without bus tickets or plane tickets we can let you stay one night thats it. I thanked him and hung up, then I joined yelp just to write this review. This is not the way you treat people, and I did not deserve that. I don't know if it was that I sound too black, but I am well spoken, I was very nice, and I got a very nice welcome to LA. Now I can take my money elsewhere, and I only pray that the next time you travel, GOD FORBID YOU TRAVEL BY CAR. Booked a reservation two weeks in advance for 2 rooms, when we got here, only one room was set up, finally the guy at the front desk was able to get the second room but that room had no heat and no electricity in the bedroom ... then when we asked to change our rooms, they (without checking) gave us key to someone else's room with their luggage and things still on the bed!! Asked to cancel and they wouldn't let me, guy said I don't have that "authorization" they gave another room, then we went out to eat dinner, came back, there was no parking due to their party guest (not even residents) and customer service wasn't all that great, they told us to go find parking somewhere else, We checked out that same night and they were rude and said "bad experience happens" ...as the staff it's your job to make sure it doesn't... would not recommend this place read more

I booked Banana Bungalow on the recommendation of a friend. The place was clean enough and it had everything that you'd expect from a hostel, however it just lacked character. When I first arrived the guy at the desk was just plain rude, he didn't tell me anything and acted like he was hungover and couldn't be bothered. It also took him around 20 min to buzz me in. I actually had to ask some of the people staying in the hostel were the laundry was. The staff weren't all like that there was one guy who was extremely helpful as was one of the drivers. The room itself was okay for the price. I had two rooms joined which meant we had two bathrooms and they were clean enough. The location was pretty good as it was only 5 minutes away from the touristy part of Hollywood Boulevard and there was a couple off good food places located near by. If your getting a bus to the LA bus station you will have to take a bus and a train there but the location really is what made up for whatever it was this place was lacking. They have free PC and internet and there also happy to print for you which is a plus for any travel and they have very secure parking. read more

Me and my boyfriend stayed there for 4 nights and we had some problems with the service, cleanliness (we saw cockroaches) and noise. We also had a problem with the power which went out during the night, but we understand that maybe wasn't their problem. About the service, we scheduled a shuttle at 9 am from the hostel to the Universal Theme Park in the day before and they didn't drive us there. At 9 am we went to the front desk to take the shuttle but the driver wasn't even aware about us and didn't even answer his phone. Not needed to mention that he did not show up. The breakfast is not such a good thing, its just cereal and some bread with limited quantity. The very good thing of this hostel is just the location, it is right on the Hollywood blvd and near transportation. We have stayed at this hotel twice now. The first visit we stayed in the dorm and the second in a private room. The dorms are of course the dorms and most people who are staying there because they are on a budget. It's as comfortable as any shared accommodation can be. Some of the other reviews said there is no security and that anyone can walk off the street; this wasn't true at all because the front is locked at all times and the code given to registered guests is changed frequently. One slight issue is they didnt advise us of this. We were locked out for two minutes and then security let us in. There were also some complaints here about the staff. All of the interactions i had with employees were pleasant. They were helpful and professional and seemed to do a good job of screening the guests. As far as i could tell, they kept out those people who belong in a homeless shelter, mental hospital or halfway house that hostels sometimes attract. On our second visit, we stayed in a private room and were very pleased. not a five star hotel but it exceeded expectations. It comes equipped with a mini-fridge, microwave,.and flat screen TV. I enjoyed the ambiance of the Tiki patio and the overall facilities. I think the negative reviews here come from people who are ill-suited to this particular environment but don't want to spend the money on something more fitting to their standards. will definitely stay here again. read more

Firstly the main problem is that there are no locks on the doors, security is so poor anyone can just walk in BUT this hostel is very nice! The staff are so friendly and the free breakfast is perfect! I was only there for 4 nights but wished it was more Would highly recommend staying in this hostel for all backpackers!!The hostel is great for those travelling on a budget. read more

Had a great time at this hostel! There was a kitchen, dining table and bathroom in each dorm room which was very convenient. They had breakfast each morning which was great. They also organized great hostel party's. There was always a great atmosphere. Staff were very helpful and friendly and it was a very secure place. I would 100% stay here again read more
