Although he'd reserved a studio, when we arrived, we found we had been upgraded to a one-bedroom unit, as the studio's door was being repaired. Late check in was very easy. The property's deck is large and has a gorgeous view of the beach directly below. You really cannot beat the location of Villa Tropical on Shacks. We enjoyed drinking our coffee on the deck whilst watching the sun rise in the mornings before grabbing our gear and walking down the short flight of steps to the sand. The gift shop within the office is a major time saver, too, when you need a drink or snack but don't want to drive. The Econo supermarket is only about an 8-minute drive away, though, when you do want to do a grocery run. It was awesome having a fully stocked kitchen and being able to cook and eat in most meals. We loved grilling on the deck at sunset! The Ola Lola restaurant is a cute spot a short walk away for food or drinks when one would rather skip cooking, too, and in each room, there is a very thorough guide compiled by the management with information on where to find all kinds of things in the area, from film development to entertainment. It was extremely convenient to be able to do laundry on the premises also. The staff are super helpful and maintain VT very well. Our unit (1B) was clean and comfortable, and by the end of our stay, we had fallen into a nice, homey routine. I was sad to leave and understand why Shacks is a place so many return to every year. The beach is clean, the big waves break far from the shore, there are interesting reefs for snorkeling, many days have adequate wind for kitesurfing, and there is a friendly surfer community among those who stay in the area both longer term and seasonally.

This is the best vacation spot ever! Super great accommodations and very helpful and friendly…read morestaff. The views are incredible and the resort is in a great location to get to jobos beach.

The hotel itself is incredible - location wise it's beach front with a pool and beautifully laid out. It accommodated my entire family to the max for an extended weekend through our wedding stay, including my uncle who is hard of mobility. He was able to stay in a room beside the pool which he loved ease of access to everything without having to go up any steps from the ground level. The staff is the most accommodating, especially the event planner, Graciela. She truly lives up to her name as she handles herself and her interactions with her clients with such grace, she is a ray of light in human form. Chris is also a wonderful host and you can truly tell he puts his heart and soul into making everyone's experience at Casa Islena a memorable one. And as for the food - phenomenal. The head chef Wesley clearly is passionate about his job and puts a very unique yet tasteful flair in every plate. Prior to having our wedding here, we already would dream about their poke bowls, empanadillas, and churrasco but post-wedding all of our guests were raving about the food being the best food they'd ever experienced at a wedding. There are truly not enough words I can say to express how perfect Casa Islena is in EVERY aspect. Pre- wedding as a guest of the restaurant/ poolside brunches and previous hotel stays I already would have rated it a 10/10. But post- wedding there is no number I can place on any scale to express how incredible it is. You'll just have to go there, and see for yourself. Thank you to all at Casa Islena for not making just my wedding day, but the entire week, the absolute best week of my lifetime. I am forever grateful.

¡Wepa! Puerto Rico !!!!!…read more I planned this trip as a couples trip but it ended up being a solo trip for myself to reset and relax , like an eat pray love island edition lol ! It's like the island knew I needed a break and took me in and allowed me to absorb nature, good food and music. Beautiful beaches and a good book where my daily morning routine with a cafe con leche or some bad bunny blasting from my Bluetooth . This resort was perfect for my reset. I truly enjoyed everyday here alone, I walked, hiked, laid on the beautiful beaches and the hotel staff catered to my every need. I was upgraded to an amazing suite overlooking the ocean and was given so many cute places to try from the staff. I do want to book an air bnb for my next trip back here but overall using Hilton rewards , I say I made out very well!

When booking, we were thinking the price wasn't too bad, forgetting it wasn't an all inclusive resort. There are three restaurants in the main side of the resort. We only ate at the buffet for breakfast. It was good, but not worth $27 per person. The pool bar had a small menu, that was pretty good. The pool was very large and the slide section was roped off, so it did not bother the rest of the pool area. The beach was not great. Only about 6 loungers, which were always full. The water is very rough and no lifeguards. What they don't tell you is that there is another side you can go with a very nice pool and much better beach. Go to the valet desk and ask for the shuttle to the golf course. This was pretty empty and we had it almost to ourselves. The downside to that is there was no open bar near the pool. If you go into the sushi restaurant they have a limited bar, but they did not speak English. I figured it out though!

The bathroom has a trick shower where a fair amount of water runs across the floor. The staff was very helpful with one key exception: the woman who appeared to be the manager. Despite certificates from hospitality training school, she was literally the only person we encountered in 5 days in PR who was unhelpful. When we arrived at 3:30 pm after driving from San Juan, her first reaction was to tell us to go away and come back at 4:00. Seriously. She finally allowed us to wait on the terrace until our room was ready. Then she gave us tokens for "welcome" drinks after making us feel unwelcome. Dear manager, here's how you make guests feel welcome: "Oh my goodness, your room won't be ready for another 20-30 minutes. I invite you to wait in the bar/terrace and enjoy your welcome drinks until the room is ready."

What really set them apart though, was the people who run this inn. They were so lovely and welcoming, and seemed to genuinely care about us having a good time there. Not just at the inn, but the things we did while we were there as well. They talked to us about our plans, gave tips along the way. They made sure we knew of all the factors that could impact our trip to the airport on our final day. They were literally the best. We enjoyed them so much that we spent the end of our evenings at the inn bar, chatting with them because we really enjoyed their company. They also know how to make an excellent drink, with really fresh ingredients. That leads me into breakfast.... So fresh and tasty! They give you great options to choose from and you can even decide if you want to eat breakfast on the patio or have it delivered to your room. They really know how to enhance a vacation! This was the best part of our trip in Puerto Rico. The beauty on this side of the island is insane. It's a little bit cooler, which we loved! And swimming in the bioluminescence was unforgettable. 12 out of 10 recommend!

OFF THE GRID Unplug…read moreyour laptop and enjoy the tropical breeze at this oceanside motel in southwestern Puerto Rico. As we made our way around the island, we needed a single night stay on 1/3/19 and Nichole C found this place. Although I had my doubts (especially based on how it looks from the outside), it turned out to be sort of charming. Upon checking in, we were given a sealed plastic pouch with a TV remote control and our room key--an actual, honest to goodness metal KEY attached to a cute painted wooden turtle! The front desk even has those retro cubbies for mail and packages, something you never see these days. Our room was quaint, a far cry from the Hyatt Regency's and Embassy Suites of the world. The bathroom was small and the water pressure in the shower wasn't great, plus the ceiling tiles were pretty beat up. No bugs though (thank god). Don't bother asking for the Wi-Fi password.....there isn't one. In fact, there was no internet connection *at all* in our room, nor in the common areas. Parador Villa Parguera is located in Lajas, a fairly remote part of the island that will really test your phone's 4G LTE coverage. There was a pool, in addition to a courtyard area with a waterfall and some very nice landscaping. My girl joked that it'd be perfect for weddings, I told her "mmmmm, we could do better". PVP has their own restaurant and backs right up to the waterfront. The motel seemed to have some pretty strict rules regarding check out: they'll charge you $25 if you don't check out by 11am, and after 12pm the cost turns into an entire night's stay! Don't forget to return the remote control, or they'll ding you a separate $25 fee. * TL;DR * I would advise setting multiple wake-up alarms and NOT missing the 11am check-out time, otherwise you could be in for an unpleasant surprise. The beds are comfy enough and the motel is close to the downtown area. Pool seemed nice. If you can survive without hi-speed internet connections for a night or two, then I'd have no problem recommending Parador Villa Parguera.
