Overly crowded, it was like a child's swimming pool! We came at the end of May and it was so jammed packed. The line took forever, the hot springs (or basically pool like) was so crowded with kids and adults. No where to sit or relax. For Banff, I would think they have a huge hot spring. So if you're thinking Budapest or even the Blue Lagoon... nope. Reminded me when I was young and went to the community pool. It is however very cheap and the view is stunning. Parking was also horrible. Lot was full so we parked on streets. I probably went at the worst time ever, but if I'm ever back here, I would try to hit it up when it first opens. read more

I'm shocked this place only has 3 stars, because Banff Upper Hot Springs felt like entering a steamy heaven! The parking spots are limited, so try to go during a time that isn't too popular - perhaps in the morning or early afternoon. Luckily we found some people who were leaving right at the time we entered, so our 2 cars were able to find parking spots! It's a short yet steep uphill walk into the building to get to the hot springs. The line was about 10 people long, but it moved quickly. People can borrow swimsuits for about $2 CAD as well as towels if need be. Per person is about $8 CAD, so everything was a steal! The water is 40 degrees C or 104 F, so it takes some adjusting but with time and patience, people can get used to the water! There is a small hallway from the changing room to the hot springs that actually have some of the water seeping indoors, so that is one way to transition from Banff's cold weather into its naturally hot water. There is a sign suggesting people don't stay in the water for more than 10 minutes at a time (or at least take breaks every 10 minutes), but there is no technical time limit in how long someone can stay. So with this in mind, there will be a lot of people in the hot springs, especially during peak hours. However there is still room to breathe and relax without strangers touching you. It's a wonderful way to take in the mountain scenery and air while melting away any stresses and toxic vibes you may be having. We ended up staying in the hot springs for about an hour. There is even a cafe upstairs for you to look outdoors and order some snacks/drinks. I'm so happy Banff Upper Hot Springs was my first hot springs experience! A quality hot springs area for so cheap - what could get better than that? Definitely a must, any time of the year! read more

There were way too many people and no space to use the facilities. Lots of people were in the pool with their daily clothes (not proper swimwear), walking outdoors with shoes (although it's not allowed), and time limit was not enforced. The hot springs isn't what I expected a hot spring to look like but it was a nice experience. They have towels, lockers and even swimsuits you can rent for a very low price. The water temperature is great for relaxing the sore muscles after a long day/week on the slopes. The hot spring itself looked more like a large pool which isn't a bad thing. They filter the water so you don't really notice the Sulfur smell; which is nice. The only minor complaint I have is the floor of the locker rooms. Because they do not allow shoes in that area, you end up walking around with bare feet and those that are sensitive to foot issues may have problems. After hiking above the top of Sulphur Mountain, i wanted to chill before heading to Calgary. Easy way to grab a towel and entrance fee. Coin operated lockers only. Buy token. Futile that I packed my own lock for the trip. The water temperature was perfect for someone who swears off scalding, burning water. And the historicity of the locale, celebrating a big milestone anniversary also was quite nice. Adjacent to the gondola, also très convenient, above the little village of Banff. Stopped in after a tough day of skiing. For all the years I've lived in Calgary and gone to Banff, I don't recall coming to the hot springs. That being said, I quickly learned that since 1998 every winter the spring runs dry, and no one knows why. So what you are really visiting during the winter is a improperly labeled chlorinated hot tub. If you want to experience a natural hot spring, apparently you have to come around May or later. The pool can hold 205 people and for the size, I don't think I'd be going in at max capacity. It would be just crammed. We were fortunate to visit and get out before all the tourist buses showed. The facilities are pretty clean and the prices are fairly reasonable. They also rent swim suits should you want to go but don't have one. read more

I LOVED the Banff Upper Hot Springs! Even though it's just a very large swimming pool with mineral spring water and some mandatory chlorine, it was fabulous. You can't beat the gorgeous views of the mountains. The water is not super hot which is good and its not smelly. It really helped my shin splints and sore muscles. It was only $16 CAD for admission. Bring your own towel (otherwise they charge you), bring flip flops so you don't have to go barefoot in the locker room (gross!), and bring your own swim suit. They sell swim suits, I overheard a girl buying one and it was $150!!! They even rent swim suits (eh) and the cool thing is they are the old school swim suits from the 1920's! Rad! Unfortunately I didn't see anyone wearing a rental. We only stayed about an hour but it was still worth it. The public transportation goes here, for only $2 CAD one way. Sadly our visit today was a disappointment. The temp was 41C or nearly 106F which was WAY too hot for me. I couldn't stand to stay in the water more than a minute or two. We have been here at least 5 other times, also in winter months over the past few years & never had it this hot. My feet actually felt like they were being scalded when I first stepped in. Most everyone in the pool was sitting out of the water because it was so hot. I can overlook a lot of things, even someone's old used band aid that I saw floating in the pool. Making it so hot that I can't stay in the water isn't something I can overlook however. I would recommend they post the temp on their website so that folks could decide before they paid if the temp would be acceptable to them or not. Anytime you get to soak in a thermal pool while enjoying stunning mountain views is a good time for me! As any big touristy spot in Banff, parking is limited (free, but limited). I definitely recommend coming earlier if possible as it gets busy super quickly! The price to get in is quite low( I think it's under $10) plus they supply you with a locker token so you don't have to pay for that which is great, and you can rent towels if you didn't bring your own. Also, definitely bring in a water bottle if you plan on staying in the pool for a while, in fact, the staff there recommend bringing one in. The hot springs was affordable but little to no parking. Shoes not allowed in the changing/restrooms which I found as a safety hazard as the floor was quite slippery. The pool, which was quite small, was crazy crowded and their capacity was about 120 however they said their mass capacity is 205 that would be insane- pool was clean and didn't smell of sulfur- the next day we went to Radium Hot Springs - this place was much nicer same price bigger pool about 3 times bigger -deeper too. Do not go if you want to save your time and money. The front desk person was extremely rude. We came here with our 4 little kids who had just changed into their swim clothes before walking in. The person at the front desk did not allow us in and wanted us to rent from the facility instead because according to him they did not allow people to come into their swim wear from outside. Honestly, I was so excited for the Banff Upper Hot Springs - something relaxing after a trip filled with tons of outdoor activities. We booked this attractions through the Discover Banff Tours website. It was fairly crowded on a weekend, but we got enough personal space. There is a kiddie section with less shallow water for folks with babies and children. To be honest, it did not feel too much different than a normal public pool, was not sure about the "hot springs" quality of it - besides it being hot. Typically you shouldn't stay in these things for very long, so we left after about 30 mins. Lockers, shower, and changeroom were fine and met expectations. Bring a towel. The view was breathtaking, but only if you stood up, outside of the water, and stood a bit on your tippy toes. There were way too many trees to see anything notable while in the water. The Hot Springs and Spa are open year round, most of which is contained within a restored 1930s heritage bathhouse. The outdoor mineral spring fed pool (including a children's area) has stunning views of Mount Rundle and the building itself contains spacious change rooms with heated floors, a gift shop, and snacks. Water Temperature is kept between 37 and 40 degrees celsius or 98 and 104 Fahrenheit. The pool itself is roomy and relaxing. The only caution here is that since 1998, greater than normal reductions in winter flows from the source of the Banff Upper Hot springs have been experienced. This has occurred quite regularly each winter in the past decade. The flow returns in Springtime. read more

It's basically a hot swimming pool that's overly filled with people. You get a decent view of the mountains but there are a few things blocking it, like the life guard. A life guard.. I know it's a pool but it's like 4' deep. If you can stand, you can't drown. The change rooms have $1 coin lockers to use but it's not very clean in there. We went here with my friend after a good 5 hour of cold and rainy hiking in Banff, so you can imagine how nice it felt to get into the hot spring pool. Nothing like the hot springs after a long day on the mountain! We came by on a Sunday at 530 pm on a long weekend and, understandably, there was quite a line up. I was very impressed with how quickly and efficiently they got everyone in as groups of people filtered out. These hot springs are conveniently located right in Banff. Their parking lot is a decent size, and there is a little walk up to the entrance (though there is also a drop off zone). The change rooms are okay- lots of lockers, but could be kept a bit cleaner. The showers also ran cold, which was a bummer after coming in so nice and warmed up! The pool itself was a decent size with seating all around and lifeguards on duty. It had a nice view of the mountains as well. As far as hot springs go, I think this place is okay but could definitely use some updating. read more

I went here in the summer of 2008 with family. This is an old hot springs that pipes in naturally hot mineral water from a nearby spring. The water is jacuzzi hot. It is refreshing after a long day traveling, hiking or whatever. The pool can get really crowded, almost to the point of not being able to move. After we were there a while, a bus full of high school kids came in. The pool got packed real quick. I did get quite a kick out of eavesdropping on the high school boys critiques of the girls attributes as they emerged from the changing rooms. That alone was worth the price of admission of $23 for the family. They also rent a 1930's era swimsuit just in case you do not want to show off your man-boobs. This really is an institution in the area: it is so well-known and famed. Fed by a natural sulphur hot spring, since the cave and basin isn't open as a commercial hot spring anymore, this location is the one to visit if you want to sit in a hot spring in the Banff area. They offer everything from rental bathing suits (historic designs too) to towels etc. and it is rather affordable in general. There is parking nearby and this is located near the gondola, and hiking path for Sulphur Mountain as well as the Rimrock Hotel. We didn't actually take a dip into the hot spring on this visit to Banff but we did use the restroom and check out the building and look out on the pool itself. We had free tickets to the hot spring and checked it out on an off day from Skiing. The pool offers a neat experience to soak outdoors in geothermally heated water and is an especially neat treat on a cold winter day. I found myself having to constantly reposition to avoid over heating in the pool and freezing from the air, which makes me think this would be less enjoyable on a hot summer day. Most guests do not respect the signs to remove boots I the change room and the resulting rocks and dirt on the floor isn't the most pleasant to step on - I'd like to see this no-shoe policy enforced more. I love the Banff hot springs. My boyfriend and I went up there to spend some time, our bodies were feeling tired and sore, so figured we would take a rejuvenating trip. It is promoted throughout the National Parks that the hot springs and cave were traditional healing sites of the Stoney people. I had gone before with my sister who is Treaty 6 Indigenous. She was let in to the site with her Treaty card, which is entirely appropriate. I told my bf about that when we went in, as he is also Treaty #6 Indigenous and very spiritual- walks the Red Road. His grandfather was a famous medicine man. When he showed his Treaty card at the entrance, the representative at the till rolled his eyes and said in a rather loud voice, "Yeah, DON'T COUNT ON IT!". In this day and age, of so-called reconciliation, I was shocked, disappointed and a little jaded by the whole situation. Did he get this messaging from his manager? Is this the opinion of the park? Do they even get cultural competency training? It was a totally inappropriate comment. He didn't want to give the guy a hard time by arguing with him or expressing his own opinion, but I need to say something about this. read more

My friends and I stopped here after a long day driving and hiking/wandering around spots in Banff. Entrance fee and towel rental fee comes to $7.50 USD per person. We shared a locker for $1 CAD. There are signs to take off your shoes before entering the locker/changing room, but some people can't follow instructions and still strut around with their shoes on (on wet floor too). It doesn't seem like there's a person cleaning up every few hours so the floor is quite gross and some of the showers were out of soap and were broken. Once you get to the hot spring itself, you find out it is more of just one glorified heated swimming pool (albeit with a little less chlorine). There are tons of people where it is somewhat difficult to find a spot that someone won't keep bumping into you. There is a small area where it is shallow enough for you to just lay on your back, but the only problem is that there is no pump to circulate the water from the main part of the pool. So what you get is standing water that is probably 15 degrees cooler than the main pool and the only time that water circulate is when somewhat walks in and out or if you are manually trying to push the water in and out from the small side opening (which was what I did). There was a review that called it a "human soup". Sadly, that was a very accurate and gross description. The cool thing is that they offer rentals on the historic old school swimsuit, which they should just sell for people to keep, because who knows how many people have gone through it. Soaking in the hot water was nice for the sore muscles and what not, but this place isn't what would come into mind when I'd want to go to a hot spring next time. I felt pretty gross afterward, despite trying to shower after getting out of the hot spring. The view of the mountains from the hot spring was really nice though. read more

We had a lot of fun it was beautiful and felt unreal with the beautiful mountains in front of us the only thing that really sucked was the cafe upstairs. We had ordered a couple cheese burgers which were utterly disgusting and to think we paid $52 for lunch which was not worth it at all the hamburger was one of those frozen ones from Costco and the Costco french fries the burger was poorly constructed with no love or effort and it was Greasy. I thought with a world renowned hot spring the cafe would have some awesome food to munch on and it turned out to be worst than a hospital cafeteria I would suggest to grab some grub elsewhere before coming to enjoy the Hot spring because I would not even recommend the cafe to my enemy that's how bad it was and once I told them they could have cared less no customer service no smile just give me your money. read more
