I brought my dog to this location for surgery, and the staff's behavior was rude, judgmental, and full of assumptions. I explained my dog's injury and exactly what happened, but they dismissed me and assumed I had harmed my dog, which is completely false, my dog is my baby, and I would never hurt him. For follow-up care, I went to a different location that was professional, friendly, and respectful. When I asked questions about my dog's medication, they argued, contradicted themselves, and lectured me, even though I have healthcare experience and know how to safely administer medication. At one point, they requested pictures of the medication, which felt more like a setup for judgment than support. Other Banfield locations I've visited were professional and respectful, so this experience was an exception. I will be taking my dog elsewhere for proper care. If you are a dog owner, I would strongly reconsider visiting this location. Customer service and proper care should never come with judgment or condescension. read more

Awful experience for myself and my pet. First off, we had an appointment for my pet scheduled at 11:15 am. So being courteous, I dropped off about 5-10 mins prior to my appointment time. The appointment was for a comprehensive exam which should've took 1-2 hours maximum. Mind you, I've been to other Banfield locations, and have done this exact appointment before, never had I had a bad experience until I scheduled with the Seal Beach, CA location. The entire day, I waited around for a phone call or some sort of communication, until 4-5 hours go by, and I'm starting to get worried, so I call the location and they tell me that they have been "really busy" and haven't even seen my dog yet. Really??? After 4-5 hours, you haven't even seen my dog. So meaning to say, my dog has been waiting there, locked in a cage and getting anxious due to your lack of time management?! Look, I understand that in certain cases, we have to prioritize urgent matters first, we are no means feeling entitled to being first on the list of being seen. However, if your office is behind on time so significantly where a few hours go by and you haven't even seen or touched my pet yet, then maybe it's best to reach out to the owners and reschedule for another time. After 5:15, we were finally able to see somebody at the front desk, (they close at 5) and we were told that it was going to be a little longer. I just think this whole matter was so unprofessional. I've been to the Banfield in Long Beach, Downey and Huntington Beach for our previous appointments and I regret bringing my pet here. Not only was it an inconvenience for me; but it took a toll on my pup who also suffers from anxiety. Which the employee blamed my pet for having anxiety and suggests to give medication. How about I suggest for you guys to not schedule or overbook appointments that you're unable to handle so that every pet gets the care they deserve and pay for. Instead of making a pet be caged for over 5 hours because of mismanaged time on your end. I'm absolutely stunned at the lack of accountability on Banfield specifically the team at Seal Beach, CA. So very thankful for the helpful and supportive staff here at Banfield Seal Beach. My 1.5 year old golden retriever Aerosmith swallowed a foreign object and we were able to quickly get an appointment with Dr. K. She was very informative over the phone after examining him, providing options for treatment. Her and her team, specifically Gemma and Andy, went above and beyond to make sure we did not leave banfield without being scheduled at another location for his surgery (since the seal beach location was unable to perform the removal). When I told them I had been on the phone all afternoon finding a a vet to do the surgery, the seal beach team immediately made phone calls to make sure he was scheduled at the referred location. I cannot begin the explain the amount of comfort and relief having answers and a plan of action. This is not our local Banfield or one we frequent for routine visits, but with the amazing customer service I will most likely switch because it is truly unmatched. read more

I responded to the email that I did not make this appointment and I also called and left a message. I received another appointment email so I called again and told the receptionist that I never called to make an appointment for my cat. The receptionist said that she canceled the appointment. No explanation why they would make an appointment without my acknowledgment or me even initiating the appointment. In the future, please do not have your staff make appointments. This Banfield pet hospital was terrible. I went online the night before to make an appointment for my new kitten to get their vaccines. I was given the option of selecting from several different times all 30 minutes apart. When I arrived for my appointment I was told that I didn't have one. The vet tech said "we have been telling corporate to fix the online appointment booking but they haven't". What a terrible inefficient system that certainly doesn't put the customer first. This is the service you get when you are already going to an overpriced Vet. I left called a local Vet who took me no problem and I paid half the price. Please do not bring your pet here for care! They killed our beloved pup and showed zero remorse or responsibility for the consequences of their actions. Our entire family has been thoroughly traumatized and are in deep grief over the sudden and disturbing loss of our family member. Dr. Rietveld, one of the newer vets on service, performed a routine dental cleaning for our dog which requires them to use general anesthesia. While our dog was under anesthesia, he failed to monitor her vitals and allowed her blood pressures to drop to non-life sustaining levels. For the entire hour long procedure, he failed to follow even Banfield's own protocol, and allowed her blood pressures to fall to such low levels that her brain and internal organs were not getting blood perfusion, leading to tissue and brain damage, and eventually to such a traumatizing and painful death that I would not wish for anyone to have to experience or witness. When we confronted and asked him about the incident, he admitted that he had seen her numbers, noted that they were very low, but continued on with no interventions because he felt it was not necessary. No remorse whatsoever for the pain and death he caused. No acceptance of the fact that he did not follow standard protocol for dealing with patients under general anesthesia and thus caused a patients untimely death. Complete gross negligence shown by a vet who should be helping to save lives instead of taking them. It is too late for our sweet, intelligent, and loved pup but I want to warn other pet owners so that this does not happen to another family. Dr. Rietveld should have his license taken away and should not be putting other pets in danger. Please be aware and careful and do not take your pet here for any kind of care if you'd like to pick them up alive and healthy. This place was great until it wasn't. This image still haunts me in my head and I felt like speaking up to them but being young and in the mist of my dogs passing I couldn't find the courage. I forgot his name but some assistant that knew how to work the front desk, guy, blonde, tall, deep voice. the only guy there at the time. When my baby wasn't doing well at the end of our appointment handed back my furbaby like he didn't matter. He shoved him to me , rushed and handed him to me with one hand. This was over a year ago and I wish I yelled at him during the time. I really like the girls but this guy gave NO FUCKS about how to properly hand me my son that I miss so much. THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!!!!! I have an 8 pound chihuahua who is nervous. They have seen her before, and have a file on her. I was not given an option to stay with my dog during the visit, but figured they had seen her before and know her personality. Boy was I wrong!!! On my visit today they terrorized her to the point where she bit one of the techs all before performing any veterinary services. Then, they called Animal Control to report the bite. They then called me and lectured me on how I should have given them warning that my dog bites and informed me that "they didn't know how animal control was going to handle it". These people clearly do not know how to deal with nervous animals and are extremely unprofessional. My dog has never bitten anyone, and I can't imagine the terror they put her though to get her into a state where she bit the tech (if she did). Also, being in a PetSmart they very rarely staff the front counter. This is likely so they do not have to spend their day responding to questions about where things are located in the store, but if you have an appointment, you don't really expect to stand in front of an empty counter for 5-7 minutes wondering if they are still in business. This happened on both my drop-off and my pick-up. The kennels where they keep the animals locked up until they are being treated are fairly small, so I wouldn't take a large dog there, but they did seem well maintained. After calling to accuse me raising a biter, they informed me that they would not be treating my dog. This is fair, but they also refused to give me her prescription for flea medication (which she really needs this year), a copy of my dogs medical and shot history, and wouldn't even offer an explanation of what happened when their tech was bitten. I won't be going back, and will need to deal with corporate to get my dogs history.... I stongly recommend you avoid this place. P.S. if you have any idea what Animal Control does with complaints like this or who I need to get a hold of at Animal Control please post it in the replies. read more

Long Beach is a dog friendly town, so Banfield had some stiff competition for me to choose them as my vet. Boy did they secure their place as best in show! Brian is about as knowledgeable as he is personable and concerned about my dog Ridley. Dr. Rietveld is a stalwart steward of my dog's health. He is even more concerned with my relationship with my dog, which I never realized is so essential. He told me to take my dog camping to strengthen our bond after Ridley was in a cone for 3 weeks. We needed that badly. It is a joy to see the staff each and every time I go. No matter how busy they are, they take the time to care for each pet and owner that comes in. DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE!!!!!! my cat was diagnosed with a condition that needed to be tested for 6 months straight. Every two weeks I'd get a refill if the meds. At about 4 months into it, hey stopped refilling the medication - even thought they said to keep her on it for 6 months. After many calls to them And pharmacy and finally going go them directly, they refilled it. 2 weeks went by that she wasn't on the meds. Well that precious time was crucial because she got worse and worse so I took her in again for assessment. They said she looks fine and to keep doing the medication. Another month went by, kept doing the medication as instructed and my cat got even worse so I took her to VCA. VCA saw her and said she needed to be taken to the ER and seen by a neurologist. Well long story short, the neurologist saw her and she was already brain dead on the left side and it would take a miracle to save her life. Treatment would be costly and she would need to be seen once a week for blood work. After a long talk with the doctor, it was best to put her down, so I did and that broke my heart deeply. Anyway, VCA reviews her records a and said she could have survived this if early and consistent treatment was given to her. Bandfield was a his disappointments. I should have NEVER taken her there. You don't even get to go in with your pet when they are evaluating your pet so you don't really know what's going on. AVOID AVOID this place at all cost. Do not bring your pet here. I brought my 9 week old rescue and had concerns about her health. They "assessed" her for all of 10 minutes, told me she was fine and I could take her home. Went for a second opinion elsewhere a few days later and she was diagnosed with an E.Coli UTI, giardia, worms, fleas and required extensive medical treatment. It took me 6 months of constantly contacting the corporate office to get a refund for the "treatment" and plan I had to pay for until this was resolved. read more

The ONLY reason why I found out was because I checked my bank records and because I had to give away Winston due to him having health problems. (Which they made me feel like it was my fault) Everything is over priced and there is always some type of charge even with their scam of a wellness plan, which your not allowed to back out of until the end of the year. They treat you like crap if you tell them that you can't afford or don't want to pay extra for absurd BS that they try to feed you. They mishandle your dog, mine almost got hit by a car because they let her escape after I handed her over into their care. And she acts as if they abused her, she's terrified of vets and people in scrubs now (which only started after they almost lost her) The doctor doesn't even talk to you and the nurses aren't capable of giving you actual medical information that's accurate, they told me I wasn't able to fix my dog until she went through heat even though she was 7 months old, then he went into the gory details of what I HAD to do when she was going through heat. Took my dog to get a rabies vaccine today. Called in advance and was told it was going to be $30. Had an appointment for 8:45 and when the girl went to take my dog back for her shot she said "come back around noon." I then asked why I needed to leave my dog for 3 hours to get a simple shot and they then said that they could do it while I waited. When I went to check out they rang me up and it was $108. I was never told that I would be charged an office visit on the phone or when I brought my dog in. I paid and called a local veterinarian who told me that they charged $15 for the shot and $45 for an office visit. Never going back to this place. Not only are they double the price of a vet out in town but we also price matched a hand full of items that Petsmart sold against the new pet store in Belmont Shore and they were also double the price. The service at Banfield Pet Hospital Seal Beach is outstanding. We have 3 cats, now 2 who have been their patients for over 3 years. Dr. Markowitz is top notch, quite skilled, and definitely compassionate. When our oldest cat, age 16, had cancer, they were very kind to us. Jack went to kitty heaven earlier this month and the staff really handled things so well. I'd been the parent of the little guy from his first 6 weeks of life. They gave us time to process things and handled his euthanasia with absolute dignity befitting our eldest, very dignified, cat. When Dr. Markowitz performed the procedure, it was painless and fast, keeping a dear friend comfortable at the end. Forgive me for saying so, but I think I might've seen a tear from the Dr. too as she's cared for Jack for so long, which added to the ocean full of tears my husband and I had. They let us take Jack home after euthanasia was performed to his very sick little body. We presented Jack to his 13 year old brother and sister, before taking him back to Banfield for cremation services. We even left his collar on after reading that national news story about a non-Banfield pet's ashes being mixed up. But Dr. Markowitz and her staff noted the collar and got it back to us for sentimental reasons, as we otherwise wouldn't have had it returned. They made sure Jack's ashes got back to us in a nice box that we could place near the window, because Jack always wanted to be an outdoor kitty but lacked the claws to handle the outdoors. They also sent us his paw print and a card signed by all of the staff. Few people send sympathy cards for pet deaths, but I'm glad that Banfield got it in terms of how big a loss of our friend this was for us. Thank you for your professionalism throughout, and I'm sorry that negative reviews are there, because most would be fixed by the wellness plan for our cats which has saved us thousands of dollars over the years, and as a form of pet insurance (really pre-paid), it beats getting sticker shock for basic pet needs, vaccinations, and exams. read more

I attempted to walk-in to this Banfield hospital because my dog had an urgent issue - my dog was not eating, becoming less and less mobile, and had an inflated stomach. I told them my dog's symptoms, that it was urgent, and they said they could not see her because they were "overbooked" and not very remorseful about it. I had to ask for a list of local emergency animal hospitals because they didn't offer to provide me with any additional help. I was so upset with the quality of service and interaction I had with the guy that worked there that I wanted to cry. I am actually thankful they turned me away because then we wouldn't have found Little Cottonwood Animal Hospital just down the road from them. They saw us day of, found my dog had an infection in her uterus that required emergency surgery, performed the surgery, and followed up with us every day until our dog was better. Don't waste your time or money here. There is better quality care at a reasonably priced animal hospital with doctors and staff that actually care about your pet just down the road. read more

This place is about profit above all. Takes a week to get a sick dog seen, RX are not cheaper than elsewhere. You can't get refills without being seen and you can not get timely appointments. I really resent not being able to accompany my pet into an exam room. That is the ultimate insult to a pet owner. This is the worst vet office I've ever been to. The expression "good with animals, bad with humans" is definitely true here. Worse, they have what I believe are unscrupulous business practices where they guilt you into expensive wellness plans and treatments. Last year they offered me a promotion for Trifexis during consult and after I agreed to the treatment they said the offer was not valid. They ultimately made it right but only after multiple conversations with the manager and additional visits - unneeded stress and time for what would have been standard at any other vet. This year they added in charges for services that my husband declined. I went to pick up my dog they were unable to provide me an itemized bill and said I would get it after I paid - huh? When I said I needed to know what I was paying for they told me "my attitude was not necessary" to which I responded "Print my bill please". After about a 30 minute wait and a $218 bill for a standard yearly (exam and shots, no medication) I finally got my dog back. Oh but they forgot the paperwork that I needed to renew my dogs OC registration. Called them and they called me back the next day to say they already gave it to me. If I had it, I wouldn't be wasting more of my time calling them but ok. We kept going here because it's walking distance from our house and thought our experience last year might have been an isolated incident. We won't be returning. read more

The front desk checkin took so long even though we had an appt. about 20 minutes and staff was so harried they kept getting details wrong and seemed so distracted and invested in other pets and not our own. We've been waiting for 2.5 hours for our puppy's diarrhea to be looked into and I'm honestly not sure if we even left her in the best of hands. A 3 month puppy with diarrhea for 5-6 days should be taken much more seriously and I'm worried about how they're handling it. Banfield Seal Beach has been my primary vet for the past year and a half because a) it's conveniently located b) the Wellness Plan has saved me sooo much money (perks: free vet visits, discounted medications and services) I have always had some sort of issue or concern with every vet I have ever had (who hasn't), but I wanted to write this review for Dr. Pyrdek. She is super cool, and never pushes unnecessary services on me, has never put the fear of God in me. I am just one of those people who anxiety visiting the vet because I don't want to hear that anything is wrong with my fur babies. Even though she has only seen my pets a couple of times (she's newer to this location, I believe), Dr. Pyrdek has always given it to me straight and offers realistic options to help my fur-kids. Seriously, they are the best. Both my cats are Banfield Wellness Plan Kitties.. we love it. Recently, this hospital saved my kitty Ginger's life... literally. They were able to diagnose a very complex issue and refer her out as a high priority to a surgeon .. my cat spent 6 days in hospital and they stayed connected with me and the surgeon during that time. And after the surgery they had no problem seeing her weekly to monitor her recovery from what turned out to be a major surgery - this really helped to keep kitty's daddy sane - (I think every doctor in this hospital has tended to my little girl in the last month). I thank EVERY Doctor and the Assistants (the staff were also great advocates for little girl) in this hospital for saving my little girl. read more

We came to this center a little nervous for a number of reasons. COVID19 is still in the air, we just adopted our 1-year-old first pup Scoops, a Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) just a few days prior, and he has a history of neglect and had not been neutered. He had become very attached to me and my girlfriend in just a few days and we did not want Scoops feeling as though we were about to abandon him again. Thankfully everyone at Banfield in Seal Beach, from Jennifer at the front desk to the Veterinarian Dr. K, were professional and caring, and made Scoops feel comfortable as they had him weighed and taken back for care. I had forgotten my COVID mask at home and they offered me one to allow me in with Scoops, which I highly appreciated. They took all the proper precautions in regards to social distancing, and Dr. K took my call in the middle of the day for an update on Scoops' health post surgery, including information on how he responded to anesthesia, what flea/mite/parasite/worm meds would work best, how much rest he would need in the coming weeks, advice about using cones vs doughnuts, post-op meds & diet, and about trimming his dew claw. She was SO helpful, as was the rest of the staff. We got Scoops' on a manageable health plan, and this Animal hospital did not require an expensive initial visit, which many other animal hospitals in our area did require. We are so pleased we were able to get everything done in 1 session: Neutering, Chip insertion, dew claw removal, wellness plan established in just 1 day. Since they are within a PetSmart, we were able to get Scoops a nice engraved tag and a moose toy to help him through the post-op struggles. I have been utilizing Banfield's wellness program since 2008. At the time, I had 2 small dogs, Harrison, a Yorkie-poo mix & Jesse, a long haired chihuahua, both rescues. I appreciated the package since I had both dogs teeth cleaned annually, kept vaccines current by demographics (moved to 6 diff states in 6 yrs for work), a known vet in each new city, and a pet store was sharing the same space. Each city the vets, technicians, & staff have been inconsistent through the travels (a given), but many of the vets were well seasoned, knowledgable, and the dogs responded very well to many of the staff. In July 2014, I had brought Jesse to the Banfield in Seal Beach (CA). Her seasonal skin allergies were worse than any other years and benedryl wasn't working on top of multi-advantix. After seeing a few of the different doctors, we are getting her allergies under control, thank you Dr Melissa! I am only providing 4 of 5 stars because the inconsistency in staff knowledge, Seal Beach team seems very new, and a few of the vets unspecific information, landed Jesse at VCA (LOVE VCA!!!) and cost over $3k based on that info. I know why 4 stars?!?? Because of Dr Melissa taking her time, listening, reading previous notes, and speaking well of her peers, she sold me back to Banfield. Her empathy for the owner, gentle touch with the animals (she was the only one who calmed Jesse), and her one-on-one lay it all out there brought me back to Banfield. Harrison passed back in 8/2012 from a disease (VCA WAS INCREDIBLE!), & Jesse is settled in one place for awhile, we both hope! Like it or not, Dr Melissa will be dealing with us for a bit. BANFIELD- 1) protect and honor the leaders in the stores. They can easily be recruited! 2) work on leadership skills for vets & staff (dealing w/ conflict, listening skills, collaborative decisioning, disarming with empathy, etc...) 3) create a uniform product/process flow company wide (I.e. communication terms, staff roles, training, & technique). AVOID THIS LOCATION! My first visit with this hospital went well but the next one everything went down hill. I should have know this wouldn't be a great place since the girl at the front desk was talking bad about the clients at my first appointment. They charged me for a test that the doctor claimed she could not do due to lack of sample and Susan the office manager refused to give me a refund. I ordered flea medication from Chewy to avoid buying medications from Banfield due to the bad experience I had and they took forever to answer the prescription request. Susan called me and said that the dr was recommending a different medication than the one on the prescription and that they have it in stock. I told her I was out of town and needed the medication sent to a different address which she wrote down. The next day she had another vet tech call me and confirm that the order was placed. I asked the vet tech to confirm the address that she sent it to and she sounded annoyed but confirmed the address with Susan. 10 days later And I didn't receive the medication, come to find out, she sent it to the wrong address! I called the home delivery and asked why they didn't ship it to the correct address and they stated that it was never updated and that I would have to call the office for a refund. I called and Susan refused to acknowledge her mistake, stating that she's not responsible. Umm hello?!! She's the one who placed the order!!!! And confirmed the address with me twice! At the end of the call she said she would refund me and still hasn't refunded me! It's over $100 worth of medication and she purposely ignores my calls. I've had to file a fraud complaint with my credit card since I still haven't received any meds or a refund. This place is a literal nightmare and Susan is extremely unprofessional and a liar. If you tell a customer that you are issuing a refund please do so instead of stealing their money! I'll be canceling my wellness plan and take my cats to a cat specialist instead of unqualified vets and staff here! read more
