Was looking for a new vet so I tried Banfield at PetSmart because they had a free wellness checkup for new customers. My 7 year old cat was also due for a rabies shot. I had an appointment for 10:30 am, arrived at 10:20 am and didn't see the vet for almost an hour. The "checkup" was so cursory, all they did was weigh my cat and take his temp. And this was not performed in the exam room, but the tech took the cat out of the room and I have no idea where they went. No exam of his skin, ears, eyes, nose, etc. The vet tried to upsell me on everything the store carries. Needless to say I will not go back. read more

This place is horrible. Do not take your animal here!!!! A few months ago, we took our beautiful pit Beaux to an appointment to be checked for mange. He'd been scratching incessantly and had developed red bumps all over his skin and his fur was falling out like crazy. We'd already taken Beaux in several times before to get a proper diagnose and he kept being diagnosed with allergies. They never told us which kind of allergies he had or from where he got them, just that he had "allergies". We take him back anyway. After hours of being back "with the doctor" (mind you, we couldn't go back with him nor could we speak with a doctor after the visit), all we were told was that he has allergies (which we already knew!!!). They gave us some pills and sent us on our way. It got worse and worse and WORSE (see photo) and we refused to take him back because they refused to actually diagnose his issue. He'd chewed a hole in his tail from it itching so badly, our entire home smelled awful and whatever was causing the itching had now spread to his eyes. We instead took Beaux to another vet in DC, he was immediately diagnosed with a yeast infection, (since his visit to Banfield, he'd developed two ear infections as well), we were given a medicated shampoo, topical creams, and medication and within 3 days, he was completely better!!! I'm only reviewing the front desk experience as I do not use Banfield for my pets. My cat was given prescriptions for a special kidney disease diet & I went to Petsmart this week to buy the food. I was told by a Petsmart salesperson that I had to register the scripts with Banfield first. During a visit they told me our cat would need a dental cleaning and I priced that out online - so instead of stressing about that I signed up for the wellness plan for cats. It is expensive but I did the math and the cost of the wellness plan for one year for the cat was about the same as the cost would be for the dental cleaning. He had the dental cleaning in January of this year. He came through just fine. Fast forward to this week - I suspected that the cat had a UTI, so I called and got a same day appointment for him. Because of COVID they are taking your pet back and telling you to either go shop or go sit in your car. Fine. So I shop for about 30 minutes and then go sit in my car. The vet calls she tells him that they think it is a UTI and we will go ahead and treat that. Fine with me... When I get the paper work it says they think he needs another dental cleaning! WHAT?! I just did that and dental cleanings for cats are pretty stressful for the cat because they have to be put under for it. There is no way a cat's recently cleaned teeth got that bad in 3 months. While I like Banfield for the convenience and I generally like Dr. Anthony I am seriously annoyed about the dental comment. Either (a) they did a bad job the first time (b) they didn't update their system to show it was done already or (c) they are trying to make me put my cat through unnecessary procedures for profits.... None of these is acceptable to me. (Edit 2: They reached back to me and explained that the system note is overly broad - that while our cat has tartar build up, he doesn't need a cleaning at this point. I appreciate the call back and the information.) Edit: Their customer service commented on this post to have me contact them. This is a great Banfield location! I pass 2 other Banfield offices (Bethesda and Kensington- tried both before) to get my two cats their veterinary care. The front desk staff are very courteous, and I've never waited more than a few minutes for my cat to be placed in an exam room. This seems like a small thing, but is especially important when a waiting area is full of barking dogs that make things worse for my already terrified cat. The other local Banfield offices seem to be much busier and hectic, and I think that Calverton is very much worth the drive. Dr. Sharma and her staff are fantastic. When my cat stopped eating for several days, she quickly diagnosed her condition with the least number of lab tests possible and offered me very specific instructions on how to treat at home, conscious of the high cost of additional tests and hospitalization. I also appreciate that they don't push the medications or prescription foods very hard, and they are respectful when I decline and purchase them online for cheaper. They really seem to have my pets' best interests in mind and I'll keep coming back. read more

I took my dog here because I suspected she had a UTI. This was my first time going here but i needed a Vet that was open on Sunday (my regular Vet was closed). They were able to schedule an appointment for the same day, which was great. The Tech was very knowledgeable and helpful and treated my very nervous dog with great care. After the initial questions the Vet then spoke with us and she was also very helpful and caring. My dog did end up having a UTI and the Vet recommended medication. The best part of this whole experience was the fact that they were willing to work with us. Many Vets overcharge on meds and they gave us an option to write us a prescription and allow us to order the meds online if we wanted to. We decided to just buy from them as their price was reasonable. Overall a great experience. read more

Awful practice! My dog has a wellness plan with Banfield and she is relatively a healthy dog, we go there mostly twice a year for check up and vaccinations. Out of nowhere she is feeling sick, throwing up and not eating, I called to make an appointment first time they put me on hold for 30 mins and noone came to answer, I called again no answer and the third time I called they put me on hold for 20 mins and noone came to answer AGAIN! I gave up and hung up! what is the point of paying you +$50 a month when I need your help you don't even bother to answer the phone. Shame on you!!! read more

I am not one to write reviews.... BUT I just have to. A couple of weeks ago my dog had emergency surgery at an emergency center. We were then told he would need to be seen by the vet two weeks after to get stitches removed. Fast forward three weeks, this past Thursday, my dog had an appointment here at Banfield Calverton with Dr. Pant to get stitches removed. His appointment was at 12PM. I had some questions for the doctor that I had left with the front desk. I was told that my dog would be okay to pick up between 1-2 hours. I go home since I was given a time frame, and felt comfortable that Dr. Pant would give me a call back to give me updates and answer the questions I had. HOURS go by, to the point that it's 5:30, 30 mins before closing. I call three times with no answer. Finally, the fourth time someone picks up the phone, and I explain to them that I have not been called with an update on my poor dog. The woman puts me on hold to see what happened. She gets back on the phone, and says, "I'm sorry we forgot to call you." I then proceed to ask her when my dog was ready to be picked, and says he was ready by 2PM. I am very frustrated by this point because she doesn't say anything else to make me understand how they could just FORGET about my dog. I hang up and go pick my fur baby up. By the time I get there's it's almost closing time. They explain to me that they were busy and forgot my dog. I understand your busy, but just saying you're busy and you forgot is not OK. I'm sure I would have gotten a call at 6PM rushing me to get there because they want to go home. Or who knows what would have happened if I wouldn't have called. Dr. Pant eventually comes to speak to me after I explain that she at least owes me an explanation to what happened, and what occurred during the visit. She was very vague, and kept smirking and giggling when I was explaining my frustration. She did not once apologize to say she was sorry. She did answer the original questions or do the exams I was told were going to be done until I told her I wasn't leaving until they did it. This is the second time my dog gets seen by Dr. pant, and it was definitely the last time he goes to this location. The first time he was seen by Dr. pant, same thing, took super long, and was given a 20 sec conversation, and seemed annoyed when I asked questions. He was scheduled for a neuter here, but I'm taking him elsewhere. This location was so good when the other doctors were still there. I think Dr. Pant is currently the only doctor at this location. My recommendation: GO ELSEWHERE. Somewhere where they actually care about your pet. By the time they released my dog to me, I could tell he wanted to go out. They didn't even bother taking him out. read more

I do not subscribe to the wellness plan, but I have taken my cat here a couple times for check-ups. I've never had to wait very long and Dr. Craig was very gentle, thorough, and answered all of our questions. We have no complaints about the quality of care and will keep using Banfield. The only thing keeping this from getting 5 stars is that when I needed a common medication for my cat, they didn't have it and told me to come back in a few days. When I came back I was again told they didn't have it and I had to drive to the Bethesda location, which did have it in stock. My fault for not calling ahead of time, but I was surprised they didn't have the the medication. read more

0 stars actually. Do NOT come here. Seriously Im not taking the time to write this because something small happened and I just want to rant about this place no. This place and their employees are the most negligent people ever. I took my cat to get a check up and the vet "Dr pant" (shouldn't even be called a Dr. she horrible) insisted and pushed my cat would get spayed and have the operation. I understand that was something we wanted but not at that moment. We went ahead with the operation because she convinced us it would be a quick and inexpensive service with our membership. Easy peasy. Absolutely NOT my cat wouldn't eat for days afterwards and she looked like she was losing weight fast. I complained and didn't know what to do, I went to her follow up and first off was sat in the room for over an hour and had the front desk call me to ask where I was when I was in the room they put me in. I was really bothered by the fact that they would take my pet and check her in the back room and not in the check up room we were placed. I know cats are easily scared but mine wasn't like that, I'm a big believe on how cats can feel bad vibes and I believed she felt it there. They kept stalling and didn't know what they were doing and didn't explain things thoroughly. Almost like they were guessing. After almost 2 hours "DR.Pan " she decided to tell me my cat might have some disease and needed to run $500+ on tests to see what was wrong but even then it might now show what could be wrong so it's best we do them anyways. She kept pushing and pushing to do them and had the talk that my cat will die if I didn't run the tests. I ended up refusing and took her to Pender Pet Hospital (which is where any of you NEED TO GO) they explained everything that they were doing they did everything in front of us, they comfort my cat and explained everything, indeed my cat WAS NOT DISEASED. She had gotten an infection from being spayed and had recovered from it shortly after going to Pender. We started to monitor her recovery from the infection and after she was fine but unfortunately ended up getting worse, she ended up passing away because Banfield failed to mention that they had spayed her, when she was in heat and the vet technician April and head vet Natalie confirmed that they weren't supposed to operate while in heat because they bleed a lot more so they went ahead with it and ended up charging ME MORE BECAUSE THEY CONTINUED WITH THE SURGERY THEY KNEW NOT TO DO DUE TO THE CONDITION THE CAT WAS IN. They confirmed that this was their fault and their mistake due to their negligence. My kitten died because she became anemic due to loss of blood from her operation that Dr. Pant pushed on her. Now a year later they STILL want me to pay and keep harassing me and reminding me about the situation. Banfield is money hungry and mistreats the animals in their care. PLEASE DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU LOVE YOUR ANIMALS. Yes it might be "cheaper" but at the end of the day you get what you paid for. F***k this place. read more

I have had my three little dogs cared for at Banfield on Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring for the last two years. Their teeth have been cleaned twice. The care is competent. In addition and most importantly. the veterinarian "Dr. Craig" who cared for our oldest dog Lilly was excellent in his care and support and the staff was supportive, considerate and gentle when Lil developed acute shortness of breath from tumors constricting her breathing. I have been to two other vets over the last 13 years, both in Olney, and was far happier with the care I received at this "generic" pet hospital, referred by a co-worker. Thank you Banfield and "Dr. Craig." Regarding negative comments about the legal docs that must be signed, thank the legal profession and countless lawsuits in all arenas in business. If veterinary malpractice suits were as common as they are for human-care, we woudn't be able to afford the care that we receive at a fair price. I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with my experience at Banfield! They were very consultative, caring and professional. Everyone from the receptionist, Vet tech, and Vet were great. I did not buy the wellness plan but got everything else I needed. I never felt like I was being sold something or forced to buy something. I brought into dogs: one 12 yr, one 2 yr old. I've had very inconsistent experiences at this Banfield. My last visit was terrible. I brought my 10 year old beagle in for his regular check up and had mentioned if they could clip his nails, specifying that I was able to get the front paws but not his back paws. I also mentioned that he had a growth by his armpit, and if they could check his ears since he's prone to ear infections. Since we are unable to go into the office with our pets I figured they would check it out. When I came to pick him up not only was he terrified but he was DRIPPING blood from his front paw. This isn't the first time they've done a bad job at clipping his nails but this was the first time his front paw would not stop gushing blood. After seeing that and seeing the trail of blood he was leaving I told the vet tech if this was normal because it seemed a bit excessive. She continued by telling me it was normal & that they might've just cut too short. Regardless of them doing a terrible job of trimming his nails, after I specified that I had already trimmed his front paws, the bleeding would not stop. I had to wrap his foot after multiple attempts of stopping the bleeding with cornstarch (the emergency vet recommended using this). Not only did they mangle the nail trim, they failed to mention anything to me about the growth in his armpit and then continued by telling me his ears were fine. I myself checked his ears and could notice he had a ear infection in one ear. To say I was angry and upset is an understatement. I don't understand why they would let him openly bleed like that and not even offer wrapping his paw. Not only that but completely disregarding his other medical issues. I unfortunately went to the Banfield inside of this Cherry Hill Petsmart for "prescription" food for my cat. I have never had any dealings with this Banfield nor have I had to purchase "prescription" pet food so it was a completely new experience for me. I had been considering checking out this Banfield because of the pet plan a friend mentioned to me. A Petsmart employee told me to speak to someone at Banfield. I went over to the desk and clerk Ms Betts(?) was typing so I waited politely. Without looking up from her keyboard, she abruptly says "yes?!" I was a little taken aback by her tone, but I stayed cool. I told her I'd wait until she was done. "I'm listening," she responded in such a nasty way. Patience running thin, I still remained calm. I told her my situation. She said I needed my prescription. I asked if she could call the vet and speak with them. Still extremely rude, she barked that vet would have to fax over the prescription. So I asked her, what exactly is in this "prescription" food that warrants a real prescription? "Special compounds for the cat." Fine.Whatever. I went home, grabbed my prescription and returned. I had to go back over to Ms. Betts(es) and "here-we-go-again" with the attitude. She slides around on her chair, without getting up and takes prescription. Between eye rolling, condescending attitude and the tone.... Long story short, by the time she had typed in prescription and asked me the questions, my patience was gone!! I said forget the prescription. I want no dealings with anything having to do with Banfield. I have a business and if ANYONE that worked for me gave such an attitude and eye-rolling to a customer and POTENTIAL new client, they would be fired on the spot. I am so disgusted. I will strongly suggest to any and everyone to avoid this Banfield Pet Hospital. If I could fiqure out how to get out of Banfield's puppy contract after today I would. MY Harley is 13 weeks old today our new to us vet. Decided to give her three shots, rabies, distemper/parvo/ and lepto 6 way all at once plus worming. With in two hours my puppy went from four pounds to almost 5 just from the swelling, and crying just trying to move. I gave her a quarter of a Benadryl like I was told and she was still in major pain. I kept calling them to aleast tell me what to do. Could as hell and indifferent they finally got back to me come pick these pain pills for your spoiled diva. YOU almost kill my dog and she's a diva. Very friendly team, from the front desk staff up through the doctors. They seem very knowledgeable, and even walk clients through the PetSmart store to find products that they know about. Very thorough comprehensive exam done with the wellness plan, and they are fair about what definitely needs to be done, versus what they would just recommend, but isn't critical. My husband and I grew up with dogs but we are first time puppy owners! We went for our first Vet Visit for our 9 week old mixed puppy and the front desk lady, I didn't get here name but let's call her (Tattoo Lady) she was Amazing! I brought my senior dog Princess for her fever and chronic cough. From the beginning, this lady was cold and rude, she barely touched princess and was dismissive to all my questions. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! This is not the first time that Dr. Pant has been terribly rude. The experience was that bad last time that I was prepared to record my conversation this time to have proof of how rude and negligent she is. I've been taking my 2 dogs here for awhile now. Never did we have any bad experiences with none of the other vets, till we started having Dr. Pant as the doctor. My brother brought in my dog to get her comprehensive/dental exam done. They left him a voicemail letting him know that my dog was ready to be picked up and they extracted a few teeth.THEY WENT AHEAD WITH THE PROCEDURE WITHOUT GETTING AUTHORIZATION. My brother called 30 minutes after he received the voicemail and apparently the doctor was rude over the phone with him as well only because asked a simple question and why were we going to get charged $90 for a procedure we did not agree to. At this point I am upset and thinking is she this rude and does whatever she wants with all the other owners of pets that come in. I went to pick up my dog, I asked if I could speak to the vet about the reason why my pet teeth were extracted without authorization and why they only called the first number on file and not try to reach me at the other number to explain to me what was going on. When I get into the room she asked me if had a question which OF COURSE I DID. I asked politely why was I not contacted on the other phone number on file and why was my dogs teeth extracted without my authorization, I'm guessing she does not like to be asked questions about her wrong doings. She got very defensive and lied to my face saying she did speak to my brother and did try to contact the other phone number on file which she didn't. I told her no one has called my phone and they left my brother a voicemail! My brother called back about an hour later and that's when she spoke to him when the procedure was already done. She then proceeded to tell me to calm down. I was already calm I was just pointing out the fact that she was lying to my face. I proceeded to ask what was wrong with my pet and she cut me off saying I have a bad attitude just like my brother. I was upset but I know how to stay calm and keep things PROFESSIONAL unlike her. She did not care that I the owner was upset about what she had done without my consent! Like any pet owner we consider our pets as our babies. I informed the doctor that my dog was not there to get her teeth extracted and I would've preferred to talk to my family about my pets dental issue FIRST. My family and I would've liked for the procedure to be done at a different time so we could've been more informed and seen if we could have done anything else before the extractions, but sadly we did not get to have a say. The doctor took matter into her own hands and did not care how we felt about it. She thought taking off the charge for the tooth extraction would make us feel better...WRONG! She kept interrupting me and she said we should just change pet places just because I wanted to be explained what was happening and why did she go ahead with the procedure then try to charge me for it if I didn't authorize it? In the voice recording that I have you can hear very clearly how rude she was and hear how she does not care. The first incident with Dr. Pant was with my other dog, he was throwing up and bleeding when using the bathroom and licking EVERYTHING and all she said was she didn't know what it was and she had to run tests. Which ended up being unnecessary and just prescribed the digestive care food. My dog did not get better but instead WORSE! I called 2 weeks later because at this point my dog looked like he was going die and was told that Dr. Pant was the doctor and she could not attend him and instead was going to give us a appointment a week later from that day. I ended up taking him to the animal hospital in Downtown SS to find out all of his insides were swollen and we were lucky that we brought him in and the other doctor literally risked his life. She is terrible, unapologetic, and rude. Management needs to get involved!!! read more

My dog hit her head and as a precaution I called banfield to see if I could bring her in to get looked at. The lady who answered the phone asked me how far I lived, and when I told her I could be there in 10 mins, asked me to wait on the line so she could speak with the vet. After being on hold for about 5 mins, she answers the phone letting me know that because the vet is closed today that I should take my dog to an emergency room. Thanks for nothing banfield. You just lied to me in my face because I know you close at 5 (it was 4:30) and that you were waiting for your last patient because you literally had just told me before putting me on hold! Thanks for trying to get me to use more money when I have banfield insurance by sending me to an emergency room. Now knowing that this place does not care about their pets, or your money for that matter, I will not be bringing my dog here ever again. read more

Banfield has always been great at the other locations I've been to. I have never had any issues in the past, but today I left with a bad taste in my mouth. I was sent an email confirmation to bring in my cat and dog for surgery at 9.15. When I arrived at 9 am, the lady at the front desk informed me that I should have brought my pets in at 7, and that the doctor could not accommodate my confirmed appointment. After showing the lady my confirmation email, she said that it was an automated email. I was made to feel as though this was my fault, which it really wasn't. I understand that we are all human, and sometimes when technology is concerned we make mistakes, or there may be glitches in the system. I get it. What I do not get, is the lack of concern and accountability I witnessed today. As a multi-unit Director of Operations in the hospitality industry, I have always valued the humility of accountability. It's ok to make an error, as long as we take responsibility for it and do our very best to fix it. None of this was ever addressed. My only option was to reschedule....and I would have, but I did not, because by then I had made up my mind to never return. I made an appointment at another competing brand, and am taking my pets in tomorrow. Are they more expensive? Sure. I wrote a review in February after having a bad experience with getting information from Banfield in Petsmart. Well, I had always thought that the people were nice, so I decided to go back when it was time for Prince's shots. I'm glad that I did, otherwise, I wouldn't have met one of the nurses, Cassandra. I felt totally guilty about writing the first review after meeting her and having her take care of my baby, Prince. She was just wonderful! She not only answered every single question I asked with detail and thoroughness; she gave me information on taking care of my Maltese. No one else had even thought to inform me about some things that every Maltese owner should know, not even the breeder. Cassandra was patient, loving, and very intelligent. I really trust her and her judgment. That's great news for a new dog owner, and a single parent with limited funds, because many times I don't know what I should do, or even what I should know when it comes to taking care of Prince. She went into details about the wellness plan and gave me the information that I needed to make an informed decision about how I wanted to take care of my dog. I loved that! I also appreciated that Lisa, from customer service, actually contacted me about my February post, in an attempt to make things better. It's really nice to know that an organization cares about customer satisfaction--that's hard to find. The wellness plan actually is a good deal for my family, considering the costs of shots and neutering. I'm glad that I went back; I am even more glad that we met Cassandra! Thanks Banfield. You've got a real gem there. I'm a nurse as well--albeit, a human nurse--but I know a good nurse when I see one. read more
