It's been three years since they killed my dog. She was sick, but if you could have orchestrated a more uncaring death I don't know how. Taylor was consumed with her sick mother. The locum (sorry, substitute vet) was self centered and, frankly, incredibly self centered. Having told us our dog was deathly ill, she seemed confused that we wouldn't kill our dog immediately so that she could make a social engagement that she told us was important to her. Great bedside manner. When we said no death going on until our kid came over to say goodbye, dr dipshit was even madder. When my kid got there and we were resigned to the impending execution of our dog, it turned out it wasn't going to be dignified. Because dr dipshit's mastiff was in the back room where euthanasia is normally conducted, Our dog had to die on the floor of the exam room. I can't forgive Taylor for hiring dr dipshit. When your pet is not feeling well, then you are going to worry. Poor Hermoine, had been sick over the weekend. On Monday, I called and asked for an appointment. Having a veterinarian you can trust makes you feel safe. Unfortunately, my trusted veterinarian, Dr. Taylor, didn't have any openings. So, I tried a new doctor. Dr. Austin was very nice. She examined Hermoine and decided that Hermoine needed iv fluids and a shot. She was very gentle with Hermoine. A dog iv bag looks just like the iv bag in the hospital for humans. I am not sure who was more scared, me or Hermoine. But, she was so good. Dr. Austin told me what to expect after the shot and what to look for. I think she did a great job. Hermoine is looking better and feeling more like herself. Thanks to all of the staff at Canal Clinic and especially, Dr. Austin. read more

Took my dog and vet said she needed not just teeth cleaned but several teeth removed. Said she had lumps that needed to be checked and tested for cancer. Basically thousands of dollars of work. Since we were moving to Spain I decided to wait and get a second opinion. We found a great vet here (everyone has dogs here) in Barcelona. Had the teeth cleaned under anesthesia. Now she has pearly white teeth the doctor says are in great shape. None need to be pulled. As for lumps to be biopsied he said he felt none. It's been three months since the vet at canal clinic suggested she might only have a few months to live. If you find yourself in a similar situation find a country doctor and get a second opinion. read more

Unfortunately, over the past several years, I've noticed a shift, some of the warmth and care that originally brought me here has slowly faded. This clinic IGNORED my consent, then tried to blame me for being upset. We had a horrible experience at Cabal Clinic in Potomac, and I honestly still cannot believe how this was handled. We brought our dog in for a spay appointment. At drop-off, I verbally confirmed with the front desk that we were only doing the spay, not microchipping. The front desk employee said okay and told me she would let the veterinarian know. I was then given paperwork to sign, and I specifically checked the box stating that I was opting out of microchipping and made sure the front desk lady saw that. When we came to pick her up, we were told that she had been spayed and microchipped. I was shocked and extremely upset. They performed a procedure that I did not consent to, after I had both verbally confirmed my wishes and signed paperwork opting out. The front desk staff went back to speak with the doctor and then came out saying that, according to their contract with the adoption organization, they were obligated to microchip her. I pulled out the contract and showed them that there was no mention of microchipping. If they thought there was, why not call us or the adoption place and double check? After three front desk employees went back to speak with the doctor again, they came out and apologized. They told us the microchip could be removed easily and asked us to come back in a few days. Then, after we had already left, we received a phone call from a doctor who did not introduce herself or give her name. Instead of speaking to us in person while we were standing there at the clinic, she waited until we left and then called to argue with us. She accused us of being against microchipping and questioned why we were worried about "diseases" it might cause. We NEVER said that. We are not against microchipping. We simply had our own timeline and plans for it, which they would have known if they had listened to us and respected our consent in the first place. What made the situation worse was that instead of simply admitting they made a mistake and apologizing, they tried to justify it, blame us, and make it seem like we were the unreasonable ones. None of this would have turned into such a negative experience if the veterinarian had come out, explained what happened, and apologized directly. Instead, they ignored our verbal instructions, ignored signed paperwork, performed something we opted out of, and then reacted defensively when we were upset. The most ironic part is that they did not even give us the information needed to activate the microchip. The front desk lady said we did not have to activate it if we did not want to. So they microchipped my dog WITHOUT CONSENT, then said it was not necessary to register or activate it? I am genuinely speechless. This is not about whether microchips are good or bad. This is about a medical procedure being performed after I verbally declined it and signed the clinic's own opt-out form. We have been taking our pets here for a long time, but recently I've noticed a few things & will be looking for a new vet. We started getting the allergy shot for my dog & when I go in just for the shot they do it right in the lobby, it's not even the doctor who does it, & they charge a tech fee. My sister in law works at a tech office & without mentioning that charge she told me to make sure they don't charge a doctors fee since the dog isn't being seen. Whatever maybe this clinic has different rules so I let that go even though I didn't think a 30 second shot I'm already paying for while standing in the lobby made sense to have another fee. Then I took my dog there for the routine shots & exam today. After paying over $500 I realized they gave her unnecessary vaccines without asking & I had to pay about $100 for those. These were given last year due to being in doggy daycare for a week, but she doesn't go to daycare or get boarded so it was unnecessary to get & to pay for. I didn't even think about those vaccines since she got them a year ago, but would think they'd go over what's being given & if she still needs those vaccines. But no, I wasn't even told, but just paid for them. I loved our vet when we moved to Austin for a few months, they were very thorough going over everything & made sure we approved any tests or vaccines before giving & charging us. read more

I really REALLY want to like this vet, but I am just having too many issues. I currently take my puppy here, and one of my biggest concerns is that I'm have 3 major issues. The 1st issue is the lack of communication, when I call to give notes about what I want done at the appointment if my husband takes our pup or if I need to speak with the vet about something, it's never actually communicated to the other staff. My dog is only 6 months old, when I wanted him to go in for a general check up about issues with him using the bathroom, they gave him 2 vaccinations (that I did not ask for), they did an anal gland expression (which I expressed I didn't want until they called me or I spoke with them), and they gave him medication for an UNRELATED issue that he didn't even need. I called a few days prior and discussed it with the vet to make sure that he ONLY was examined for the specific issues I requested, which was not done. The lack of communication is also with the owners as well. I don't get an email for his time or date on when we schedule his appointment. YES, I'm aware I need to write those times down, and I started to. The last 3 appointments I wrote down the date and time then were told "they weren't the correct date or time that they had on file" which is convenient for them since the only way for you to find that out is to call them. If you do call them, prepare to be on hold 80% of the time. They also don't open until 9, which is incredibly inconvenient for any kind of necessary need to speak with any vet specialist. I've had to call a vet hospital for help more than the actual vet them selves. The 2nd issue is the time. Rarely is anyone available. You can't schedule any other way aside from calling on the phone. You can't check your appointment unless you call them, which on most days is from 9 to 6, but you will be sitting on hold unless you call first thing. I don't enjoy having to relay on a single phone number to discuss the importance of my pets health, there are no telehealth visits, online bookings, online schedules, nothing more then a phone number that no one answers half the time. The third issue was that I felt very unheard of my concerns for my dog. Again, I have called the emergency vets office MORE, then his actual vet, and they've been more helpful. Not ONLY recently did we have a medical emergency and were instructed to follow up with his vet, I made an appointment with them over the phone with them the next day, and the only time I've ever received a call back from them was that same day in the evening for her to CANCEL my appointment because she just "simply couldn't find the time". When asking questions about my dogs, well fare many of the times I've been brushed off with answers or given short quick answers that just gloss over issues concerning important areas of health. I'd be less concerned if my dog wasn't a puppy, but he's so young that I want to feel my vet isn't just brushing me off. I don't have an issue with the staff but all in all my main issues are the lack in communication, the lack in owner care, the time, the lack of coordination, and just a lack of consideration. If I wanted this level of lack of care, I could simply go to Pets Mart for half the cost I'm paying this place. I'm currently looking to switch veterinary practices, but if things change, I'll change this review. I have to get my dog neutered very soon, and with the amounts of concerns I have, I MOST LIKELY won't be using them. read more

I love Canal Clinic. I brought my dog to Friendship Heights previously and it was like a medical animal factory in comparison. FH was very cold and disorganized. My dog had so much anxiety about the vet because of those experiences for a year. Going to Canal Clinic was such a relief I almost cried they were sweet to my dog and gentle. He was so at ease and calm when his previous vet said he needed to be drugged for appointments and suggested he would be aggressive because of his anxiety at 10 weeks old. I know this is a bit of a rant but I just love this establishment, all of the warm employees and the very skilled veterinarian. I'm so glad we found them! read more

It's the day after ms. pee-happy's surgery and she's already in great shape and no apparent pain, barely even a noticeable anything at the surgery site, and, best news of all, no fresh piles of urine-soaked clothes in the laundry hamper. No more piles of recently accumulated business cards rendered yellow and blurry. No more wondering what that smell is, and realizing it's your pants. Your pants that you've been wearing all day. Money. Also money: Canal Clinic is one of only two MoCo vets that will do discount spayings/neuterings. Contact the Animal Welfare League, and they'll mail you a certificate for your little guy or gal to get fixed at a discount rate, the size of the discount depending on your income level. I brought my puppy here for the AWLMC Spay/neuter program. I was able to get an appointment to schedule his surgery the next week after I got my certificate. Everyone that I met and talked to on the phone was very nice. I would have given them 5 stars until I noticed in the car on the way back home post surgery that my dog's nails were trimmed and 1 of them was bleeding. No one told me that they were going to clip his nails. I guess I wouldn't have cared had they not cut his quick. When I called the office they said that they always trim nails when they get put under anesthesia. I'm upset because first, they didn't tell me they were going to trim his nails, and second, they still managed to cut his quick even though he was put under and not moving. That just tells me whoever did it was careless and/or rushing. The other thing that bothered me was that I never met the veterinarian who performed the neuter... I just thought that maybe since it was a minor surgery, it wasn't their policy/necessary. Sorry to say, I'm not particularly happy with this experience. read more

I have been sending my dog in this clinic even by being far away from us. A neighbor suggested it to me but the last service was not so good. We went there for the annual vaccine and examination. They took her blood in the lobby which it was not that the issue but the lady was not gentle at all the old staff was more caring. Her paw was bleeding and they didn't put some alcohol i waited to come home. I scheduled an appointment for her surgery and now I am rethinking it if it is the right place . I needed to get my dog a bordatella shot quickly, but my regular vet would not be available for quite a while. Canal was very close and i was able to get a quick appointment and took my dog with his history of shots. I got the bordetella shot easily and they asked about the other shots that were due soon. I said i could go to my regular vet, but if a couple are important this time of year, go ahead. ISSUE #1: Without saying a word, they gave him every shot on the list and gave me a bill for several hundred dollars. ISSUE #2: I later noticed that one of the important shots was listed as a "3 week booster" and would expire during early April. I was puzzled but about 2 weeks later i got a notice to come in for another booster that would expire in 3 more weeks. I had never heard of a 3-week booster but when i called my regular vet, I confirmed my suspicion that they charged me for each 3-week booster the same price that i ususally would pay for the full year dosage. Issue #3: They included a note that they could find no evidence that he had a recent rabies shot that would still be effective. I did nothing because my regular vet is VERY careful about rabies shots. The next day, on a walk, i checked his collar for 3 metal tags. One gave his name and location info plus a note that he was "Microchipped." Another was a general county tag. The third was a clearly marked "RABIES" tag with an expiration of Nov. '24" It was not clear if they wanted to give the dog a rabies shot. ISSUE #4: Well this is more a personal issue than a professional one, but it got my negative attention. We got our dog (after 40 years of rescues) from a successful show breeder in Maryland who produced many champions of a popular breed. I've had other walkers comment on a "beautiful head" or "lovely specimen" and, when i note that they know the breed standard, they say "I go to the dog show each year." When i look at the top of the invoice with date of birth, animal species, weight, I saw next to breed "[breed name] mix." No other vet has ever suspected that this guy had any extraneous genes. It brings me no joy to write this review, but it needs to serve as a warning for people who may want to take their furry friends to this clinic based on Yelp reviews, which is what I did. I entrusted the life of my very best friend to this doctor for my year in DC. I went twice with my beautiful 14 year old mixed golden breed. I loved the casual office environment, adjacent to a home upon where roamed a large pig and various animals, and, although the front desk was initially persnickety, they warmed up. I loved Dr Taylor's casual chic vibe and easy way with my dog, although I was surprised at both her health summary and at the extremely short visit. Obviously, having a 14 year old dog, I have been through many vet visits, but never so short with the sense that she was doing me a favor in seeing my pet, as there was someone waiting in the lobby she knew better. My dog was experiencing very heavy panting for elongated periods of time, lethargy, drinking copious amounts of water and acting extraordinarily anxious. To the point he would wake me at night and just pant. I was seriously worried about these new behaviors. After a brief, ten minute exam with palpation, the vet complimented me on his teeth and gave him valium, stating he was disturbed by the weather. I asked her if she was sure, it was very unusual behavior, and Yogibear and I have traveled extensively, the weather should not have this prolonged effect on him, these behaviors were escalating. I asked if there was anything more it could be, anything medical, as he is an older dog. Nope she replied, he is in great condition. He wasn't. He was in decline, starting a prolonged illness, kidney failure, that, had it been caught then, he could have been given a longer and more quality life. I actually took him back to her again a few months later, liking how comfortable he was with her, which I realize now was only docility in the hands of a doctor as my dog is smart, and there was the potential she could have helped him. Had she cared to open her heart a little and pay attention to what she was doing. Again, a short visit and a suggestion to remove a wart on his head. At this time, not only was his kidney failure advanced I found out as soon as I got home to a quality vet a month later, but he had also developed a splenic mass -both are time bombs to a dog's system, and both, if caught early, can be healed or at least monitored and directed. The kidney failure can be slowed down through diet and medicine, splenic masses are risky but can be operated on. The truth is, she did not care. She did not check in with her gut or experience, she had another patient waiting and - when once she may have practiced with some heart, her practice is now a factory - and considering I was a stranger - she really just did not care. I think that was the root of her disregard for my animal. She is old Potomac and did not know us, but her callousness to the health of my animal is against her veterinary oath, and against common decency. I would have been FAR better off consulting Doctor Google with his symptoms. Any vet worth their weight in water knows a male neutered older golden mix with panting and lethargy requires greater investigation. She simply is not a quality practitioner. Moreover, after I moved back to California, a week later upon my dog collapsing, and I ran around taking my dog to three vets: emergency, his regular vet, and a homeopathic vet. I found out that most vets make it a practice to test certain dogs breeds above a certain age (8 or 9) for certain illnesses common with their breeds - it is customary policy, not to mention when an animal comes in with evident symptoms. I found out about the splenic mass at home in California, just 3 weeks after she pronounced him very healthy, but, with a wart. I was not going to operate due to Yogibear's age, but he was fighting and I opted to move forward with the surgery. I was initially not angry she had not caught the mass. In fact, I called her office wondering if I should do the surgery, I still trusted her, foolish me. However, I took him in for preop, and that is when his advanced kidney failure was discovered. I was livid then. He had been healthy on all tests a year before, and only seen her in the interim. There is no way on this green earth she should have missed it. The signs were all there and she had seen him twice. She simply was not doing her job. I called and left an angry message saying as much and requested she return my call. Not only did she not return my call, she then made rude remarks about me personally to someone I know. She is extremely unprofessional. She broke her veterinary oath to my pet, and her commitment to her clients privacy. Any thoughtful professional can recognize grief, and would have thought to return a call. The fact remains, my animal came to her very ill, she had the power to possibly save his life, at least enhance his quality of life, if she had paid attention. read more

I was very happy with my first visit. I called a few days before and got an appointment for my dog, who needed her shots updated and a heart-worm test. She had been a patient at Hamden Lane, but they have closed. There was no problem getting an appointment, and when I arrived we were seen right on time. The dog was weighed, checked over and tested in short order. Dr Taylor asked questions about her, noticed that she has chronic ear infections and suggested an alternate treatment to the home remedy we use to control this problem (which crops up every few months). Other treatments from other vets had not worked well, and Dr. Taylor said we might try this new one. She was not pushy at all, and said we could just continue to treat it as before. She updated the dogs shots, said they would remind me when she needed another visit and we were out the door. The bill was very reasonable, and she carries a generic version of the hear-worm medication all dogs should be taking. This is my kind of vet--thanks to all the previous Yelp-ers who took the time to explain their satisfaction so I could pick a new vet. read more

Dr Taylor is the BEST, bar none. We have been bringing our dog here for years and found this to be a responsive and caring practice. We have had no problem getting short notice urgent care as well as routine checkups. Dr Taylor now does canine dental cleaning and her anesthesia regiment does not overwhelm our dog for days afterwords. As our dog has progressed in years Dr Taylor's knowledge of canine geriatric care has grown helping us deal with problems like vestibular syndrome. The staff is kind and caring. Dr. Solomon is the real deal and genuinely cares about your pet's health and well-being. He is very detailed in his phone conversations. You can't say the same for a lot of other practitioners. Some will just let you talk on the phone and their answers will be short, one worded answers and they'll say it's a lot to read through and just go through the motions. Dr. Solomon will get recommendations or referrals from me if any of my friend's pets need assistance in the future. read more

We brought our puppy to Canal to get neutered and like any new puppy-parents, were worried how the little guy would do. He barely even noticed he had the procedure done. The staff at Canal took such great care of our little guy and were so kind to him and us. He had no pain post-surgery, and never once messed with his stitch, or even acted out of sorts. The doc who performed the procedure (dont have a name) did an amazing job- he was practically heeled completely in two days and his incision is so tiny, it never bothered him once. Updating this review, since it's been a while. So I have still been taking my dogs and cats here since my last review. My dogs are getting older and having more issues (heart/lungs). I have been going to Dr. Solomon over the years and he has been stellar!! My one dog has had a cough and we have been back to the clinic a bunch of times. Dr. Solomon will actually talk to you and listen to your concerns and address them. He even called me after hours to discuss the results of my dogs cardiac work up. He listens and seems to truly care about my pets. The staff is friendly and nice. Dr. Solomon will recommend some treatment paths and will work with u on what makes sense given your financial situation, dogs age, medical issues etc. There is a reason I still drive so far to see them. Now I drive from Germantown to Potomac. It's well worth the drive. If u are looking for a responsive and knowledgeable vet, Dr. Solomon is it!! read more

If you have a car, dump your much more expensive vet in DC and take your pets to Canal Clinic on River Road in MD. The vets, Dr. Taylor and Dr. Solomon are wonderful. I particularly love Dr. Taylor. She is no nonsense. She will tell you what is wrong with your pet and best way to help them. They will also let you pay some at time of visit and then the rest in a couple of weeks. I am not sure if they do this for new patients but they have done it for us twice. I have been going there since 2012 after a recommendation from my neighbor and I am glad I made the switch. I work with a feline rescue group and have taken a cat to Canal Clinic previously, but today when I called for an appointment for my new foster I was told by the incredibly rude and incoherent staffer who answered the phone that they "can't take in or work with too many rescue groups." When I asked for an explanation of what she meant, she said, under her breathe, "Oh my God." When I said "what" she then said "nothing." UNBELIEVABLY RUDE and DISMISSIVE and could not explain a valid reason for not wanting to schedule the appointment. Dr. Taylor was lovely the last time I visited with a previous foster cat, but I will NEVER EVER use this clinic again. All I wanted was for the cat to get her rabies vaccination updated. And I will spread the word among all the rescue groups in the area that we ARE NOT WELCOME at Canal Clinic. I won't mention the staffer's name, but she knows who she is and if Dr. Taylor cares about her reputation, she'll have a conversation about customer service skills with this particular staff (the call took place Thursday, June 15th at 11:08 a.m. - check the logs if you need to know who it is). read more

The office is wonderfully peaceful compared to some places I've been and Dr. Taylor even saw me early. Dr. Leslie Taylor is amazing. I took my Yorkie poo to her years ago before I moved and now that I'm back in the area and 2 dogs and a cat more to the family they will all go to see Dr. Taylor. She is not in being a vet for the money but actually because she cares about animals and has had the name nurse/assistant since I started going to see her in 2001. I live in capital hill and make the loooong trek all the way to Potomac to see her. I really adore her, the only reason I would ever change is that I love my new neighborhood of Capital Hill and it is about 1-1.5 hours away... I would suggest her to anyone and everyone, I have never loved a vet as much, close second to my vet in San Fran but she still takes the cake. read more

Dr. Taylor has been my vet for years and has always been excellent with my kitties. When I moved overseas (to Switzerland) for work, I had a terrible experience with an unethical vet who tried to bully me into unnecessary and expensive treatment. I called Dr. Taylor and explained the situation. She really helped me through it (at no charge) and told me to call her anytime. It is clear she really cares about animals and wants what's best for them. I wouldn't go anywhere else in the DC area. Update - I am now living in Thailand where I, once again, had a terrible experience with a vet. My cat was very sick, and the vet here simply didn't know what to do, and just kept suggesting one far-fetched diagnostic test after another while our cat declined, and ultimately collapsed. The day he went to the ER here, we explained all of his symptoms to Dr. Taylor over the phone; at no charge, she suggested a very simple course of treatment which we followed. Within a few days, our cat was fine. She literally saved his life - without even seeing him. We cannot recommend her highly enough. read more

Along with her able support staff, Dr. Taylor has created a great veterinary resource in the Potomac area of Maryland. She is so good that we drive to her offices from Washington, DC. Dr. Taylor is a caring Vet who is a dedicated five star professional. We bring our dog in for all medical issues and she has been a sharp diagnostician -- recommending tests only when she was unable to be absolutely sure of a diagnosis. Her "bed side" manner with our dog has been outstanding and her discussions have been informative and reassuring. She is a five star professional. read more
