It has been 12 years since my last visit to Bangkok Cafe. 12 years! And not because the food isn't great, because it is! It's just that dang location. Even if I described to you exactly where it is, you wouldn't be able to place it. It's just completely out of the way, and even if you lived close by, it's so unassumingly dimly lit, that it just looks closed. So much so, that our first visit after a 12-year break, almost had us driving off. While the 'OPEN' sign was on, the dining room was completely empty at 7 p.m. on a Saturday. But thankfully as we sat in the car looking at the hours on our phone, the young man who does double duty as the adjacent store clerk, as well as waiter popped out to let us know it was safe to come in. The food is unassuming, totally homemade in the best and worst way possible, and everything is very specific to this family. The flavor profiles of ALL dishes are perfectly balanced, and while some meats are severely overcooked, that's probably for the best. Will it take us 12 years to return? Likely not, as popping in last night has put it back on our radar. But even still, due to the totally bizarre location, it's going to take some effort to make it back. But we will if for no other reason, to grab another bowl of that absolutely divine tom yum soup. read more

The gentleman at the register was very customer focused and friendly even though he was handling several tasks at a time. This restaurant is very small and quaint. They also have carryout service. They have a small grocery store on the other side if you want to make your own at home. Service is fast and efficient. The food is fresh and delicious. My favorites are the Pad Thai with Shrimp, Spring rolls. Chicken Satay. I love the peanut sauce. I'm anxious to try the Tom Kha Gai Soup next. read more

I came through this area on a roadtrip and was looking for good take out and Bangkok Cafe hit the spot. I ordered online and the food was ready on time and hot and fresh! I'm not sure whether the restaurant is actually open now for dine in as that section seemed closed. I picked up my food from the counter on the grocery side. We ordered Pad Thai and Pad Kee Mao as we always do visiting a Thai restaurant for the first time. Both were delicious with well balanced flavors. Would definitely recommend!! read more

A small family style cafe by a Thai grocery shop. If you prefer a better eating environment maybe here is not your place. The table cover is kind of sticky and is not even transparent any more. The food is pretty decent though, the Thai pad was exceptionally good. Meat was not as abundant as the common Thai establishments. The pad see ew hubby ordered had a flavor that we never experienced before, cannot tell if we like it or not... The soup was very mediocre though. The mushroom in it is good stuff but was flavorless, so were the chicken pieces. Anyway, I would recommend this place for foodies, but for those who care about dining space, try somewhere else. read more

A coworker and I were talking about what our favorite Thai places in Toledo are, and mine was Bangkok Kitchen while hers was Bangkok Cafe. I always used to confuse which one was which on Yelp or Google Maps so I figured it was time to try out Bangkok Cafe. First, I wouldn't go here if you're looking for a great ambiance. The restaurant is a bit dingy but not unbearable. It seems to be more of a takeout place as we were the only ones there for the duration of our meal. Upon entering, there was no staff to sit us down so we kinda just sat down and waited but that's understandable since there's only one guy who runs front of house. My boyfriend and I ordered the thom kha soup, drunken noodles, and fried fish curry dish. Thom kha soup was pretty good but I wish it had more chicken in it and had more heat. Drunken noodles were tasty but bordered on a bit greasy. I really liked the fried fish dish - fish was nice and crispy and the sauce offered brightness to the dish. The portions of it were small though for the price. All in all though we left happy. I don't think Bangkok Cafe is as good as Bangkok Kitchen but it will do in a pinch. read more

Over the past few weeks I've had the great privilege to travel our great nation! And not just to major cities! I've been off-roading as I say, visiting America's little known places - Mexico, MO - Perris, CA - Luckey, OH! What I've discovered is that our country is so diverse, that there are good people in our country! It's sad that the good in people is often overshadowed by the actions of the few and the negativity that we watch and read in the press. Sorry to rant on this review - but this place totally shocked me! It's America at its finest! Authentic, delicious Thai cuisine right in the middle of nowhere! No scrap that. There are good people and good food here, so this little town is definitely somewhere! The spring rolls, wonton soup and Pad Thai were all winners here! Take the trip just outside of Toledo to what's being called Ohio's best Thai food! It's also one of the best you'll find outside Bangkok! read more

This place is a hole in the wall mom and pop shop but don't let that fool you. When we first pulled into the parking lot, we thought we had gone to the wrong place. The place looked a bit sketchy and I wasn't sure what was going on. However, we walked into the grocery store and asked if we could order. They told us they're only doing take-out and we could place our order at the grocery store register. The grocery store was a sight to behold. That's how you know this place is authentic. The state of the associated store should have been a dead give-away. It's a mystery to me how one can concoct such unpalatable 'food'. I am glad my chickens are not so discerning, so nothing went to waste at least. The wonton soup was plain disgusting. A weird sweetness with a subtle fishy taste to it. The overcooked wonton wrapper was falling apart while trying to hold on to a piece of mystery meat. The fried spring roll wrapper was promising until the filling appeared. Two noodle dishes can only be described as one brown slop. Luckily the key ingredients for my curry came out of the can, which made the curry broth the highlight of this dinner. The tofu sloppy, the veg overcooked and the bamboo old and stringy. A failed experiment that reminded me why I rarely get take-out. read more

The curry selection is limited (red and green) but the green chicken curry was excellent. I must admit that I was a little surprised that nobody ask me how spicy I would like my curry; I didn't realize that until after I had received my food. As it turned out, it was perfect in terms of spiciness; just hot enough to make my scalp sweat! Again, like many of Toledo's Thai restaurants, Bangkok Cafe is located in an unassuming strip mall, in a part of town that has seen its better days. Yelp lead me here after a brief search looking for restaurants nearby my hotel. It's situated in a lonely little shopping corner. Not much else going on in that area. There is parking available. It was mid day and the place was empty except for a lady sitting down on phone (owner?). I gave her my to-go order- Tofu Basil and the seafood soup. I wanted egg roll but the Yelp reviews had said those were oily so I made sure not to order that. Food appeared to be made fresh. When she brought the food out I noted the Tofu basil was actually Chicken Basil. I wasn't a vegetarian so i didn't want to make a big deal. The woman did offer to go make a Tofu one...but time was awasting and I didn't want to wait any longer. Also, a man walked in (son?) during this episode and he vouched that that lady was an amazing cook etc. So on that note I decided to try the chicken as is. 1) It was D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S 2) Not greasy or overly saucy --you know how they just put too much sauce, it's like you are eating a soup/stew 3) Really flavourful Yes it was sooo good. I mean I am sure the Tofu would have tasted just as good. The seafood soup was also excellent. Not too salty, it was pipping hot and not too spicy. I have had Thai food plenty O'times in NYC (good and bad ones). All in all, I was pleasant surprised by this little cafe. I will def return to try other items. read more

For my money, this is the best Thai food in the Toledo area. It's like a home-cooked Thai dinner in your mom's dining room. The owner is the cook and the server, assisted usually by her family and children, which adds definite charm. The Tom Kha soup is fantastic, well worth trying, as is the Thai jerky for an appetizer. The green and mango curry (not always available) are OUTSTANDING! And I'm also a big fan of the Pad Woon Sen, Pad Kapoa, and Pad Nam Prik Pow. If it's available, try the fresh mangos and sticky rice desert. Not to mention, it's located adjoined to a Thai grocery, so you can pick up some real goodies to try at home. Delicious authentic food, great service, and the joy of giving your money to a local business run by remarkably nice people. I recommend this restaurant to everyone. Been coming here for years and the last few have been a problem. Missing order items, prices out of this world and reduced portions. Since they are now take out only, you would think they would be on top of it. When I ordered tonight, I was told 25 minutes so I gave them 30 because they NEVER have my order ready. I waited another 20 minute for my food and the basil fried rices was a joke...not good, and the cucumber salad had no dressing. Again, after an additional 20 minutes over what I was told. I had Pad See Ew with shrimp. It was horrible there was no flavor to the dish. I thought maybe the sauce was in the bottom so I took out the noddles and put them in another bowl to pour the sauce on top of them but there was no sauce in the bottom. The whole thing went in the garbage. read more

If you haven't tried Thai food yet, then Bangkok Cafe is the place to begin. If you have, then you know Bangkok Cafe is the best! The owner Toi is very friendly and will make to order a dish that will exceed all your expectations. The red curry is really the best I have had in all the Thai places we have been to in NY, Seattle and Houston. Its a small shop in a strip mall and the decor is very utilitarian. But the food is terrific and the owner always welcomes us with a huge smile like we were some long lost relatives. We have been there multiple times and all my colleagues and friends who have been there have the same experience- absolutely love the food! read more

This is an unassuming strip mall Thai masterpiece. The menu is on a sheet of paper but for a quick stop after fueling up across the street for gas... this was a jackpot find. The spring roll was crisp and hot filled with carrots, rice noodles, celery and some seasoning. The chicken with broccoli was full of garlic and a little spicy in light brown sauce and served with steamed rice. The white meat chicken was cooked well and the broccoli was steamed up with good crunch. Now on to the show stopper... the Pad Thai (both kinds) was very tasty with a hint of sweetness in the orange colored sauce. The noodles were done well and the chicken or tofu was cooked to a good texture. The bean sprouts were plentiful and the peanuts came and were mix yourself into the dish. Pickled radish rounded out the dish. Hot oil on the side was a little smoky and quite delicious. There is a grocery store next door and the decor is nice enough but I wouldn't say romantic. Plants cover the front door and an empty aquarium is also nearby. Plastic covered table clothes adorn the tables. Overall the food far outshines the strip mall attitude. Enjoy! read more

Ordered Thai for the first time since I moved to Toledo. Ordered a beef dish and a shrimp dish for me and my husband to share. He is allergic to poultry meat and I thought I was clear on the phone. The shrimp dish had several large chicken chunks. I ordered no eggplant and they did not compensate with any extra vegetables giving me soup with 6 crappy pieces of shrimp. They replaced it with food that was adequate. A $13 dish having 6 small pieces of shrimp with a few veggies in "soup" was not worth it. The ONLY reason I gave an extra star was that red curry sauce. Stopped here on a road trip. It's an interesting little Thai grocery with restaurant attached, and seems to be family-run. The atmosphere is kind of run-down- in fact a piece of lightweight wood trim fell off the wall next to my table and hit me in the head- and there is a weird empty fish tank and some strange "art." In an area dominated by fast food and subs, Bangkok Cafe is a little Thai oasis. The prices are very low, especially the lunch combos, which include a spring roll, soup, rice, and an entree. The soup isn't great (think egg drop, I believe) but the spring rolls are good. I like the mango curry with tofu and the green curry is good, too. The noodle dishes are tasty, too, with lots of veggies. It's hard to get in and out in an hour for lunch, but they are usually pretty close. Stopped into the restaurant for a quick dinner on a Sunday night after reading the great reviews. Tables were not clean, and the service was a misstep. Our waiter put his whole hand on top of the rim of our water cups to go refill them. Our meals were delivered 5 minutes apart. No soup spoon was given with the pho. Positive notes were the Thai music, the food tasted good, and prices were very reasonable. I'm rounding up because yelp doesn't allow 2.5 stars. read more
