I've been to this theater twice and it's been so so. Pricing is decent, the food options are OK, staff have been more kinda not cool than cool though you have a mix of both. This last experience was a couple days ago to watch the Nosferatu movie and the movie started. They didn't close any of the doors or even turn the lights off. The light wash on the screen was awful, as you can see in the video clip. I also was sitting in the back in a chair that was busted listening to the movies across the hall because all of the theater doors are open. I went out and shut the doors for the theaters right around our and then the doors for Narato so that I can actually listen to the Nosferatu movie not every other movie that had allowed crash bang audio track. The place looks a little off but when you get in it looks like any non special cinema, which is fine. You can check out by yourself and get your tickets printed. The ladies at the counter where okay, not over the top but also not bad. The popcorn was good but super salty. Now, I had read some of the reviews before coming and I was afraid about having a bad experience like some said they did but for my surprise I had a regular time in a regular cinema! THE LIGHTS WHERE OFF!!! And THE DOORS WHERE CLOSED!!! Lucky me lol. The sit was a little hard but also the movie was somewhat long. And for last, the bathroom smell good and looked decent. read more

Very nice staff, but we went to see a horror movie and the lights were left on through the whole thing. The screen was so dark that some scenes were almost impossible to see with the lights on. It definitely ruined the whole movie that we paid and drove 35 miles to see. read more

For a small city theater, I recommend it. It was crazy clean and pretty comfy stadium seating. Decent selection at the snack bar and the personnel were helpful, friendly and with a terrifically positive attitude. Have all the most current films (in some small city the selection is stale and available to stream) and neither the screen size nor volume is overwhelming. The only negative is the sound leakage from a neighboring screening. Either they need more soundproofing or deciding not to put an exceedingly loud action movie screening next door to a quieter drama or musical. It impacts on a positive evening out. I like this cinema. It's a bit dated, and a bit pricey, but the recliner seats are nice. Every time I've gone in, even when it's busy, the lines move pretty quick. It's also very clean. Overall, a nice small city cinema. read more

SMH at this theater. Looks old. In the men's room they dont wvwn have the privacy dividers so you can do your business. Air conditoner didnt seem to work and they have this thing where you choose your seat. The stadium seating makes it feel like you are in left field instead of close to the screen. The Bangor area isn't teeming with fantastic movie theaters, but this cinema remains the best of the bunch for sheer convenience and size. It's right off of the Stillwater Avenue highway exit and conveniently central to all the sprawling shopping centers and restaurants that no one wants to listen to me rant about how they ruined beautiful downtown Bangor so, about this movie theater... Online ticketing is available through movietickets.com but is only useful for grabbing tickets to sellout showings - it's pointless if one is hoping to skip waiting in line on opening night - the theater is not equipped with a kiosk to print out online orders, that happens at the box office like everything else. Most of the staff are friendly and endearingly quirky. The lobby and restroom could use a refresh; two of the perks the theater is proud of would seem to be its permanently erected little kids' birthday party set up and (as of now) the addition of White Castle burgers to the concessions menu. The former looks like a slightly sad shrine for lost orphans and the latter will give you crippling heart disease. One Christmas, Shetland ponies were housed in a pen in the lobby as a local business tie-in to "War Horse." It was hokey and adorable, I loved it. Prices for tickets are below the national average and it's an even better deal to see a matinee. Food is not cheap but I just assume that's why they call them concessions. I concede that I'll pay the price of a decadent meal at Subway for some cheap ass old corn topped with delicious delicious arterial sclerosis (now with burgers by White Castle!) The theater seats are comfortable enough with 6 screens having stadium seating and most of the others featuring seats with a surprising amount of recline. It's still not much fun to see a film in the last two runty screens at the back, but chances are those old movies wouldn't be at Spotlight anymore anyway, so deal with it. As with all three area cinemas you're out of luck if you're looking to see a film that hasn't been given a wide release nationwide (you artsy snob). Super fun fact: I always like to park far on the right side of the building so whenever I'm in a movie playing on that side of the theater I can just walk straight through the exit next to the screen and out to my car like a Boss. Simple pleasures. Spotlight Cinemas has the better seating overall and more consistent sound from theater to theater but it's smaller and its lobby is both sad and in Orono. Bangor Mall Cinemas is still the behemoth to support, and I have for nearly 30 years (and that's before I started thinking about the size of my carbon footprint). Biggest disappointment was paying $36 for 2 popcorn tubs, 4 drinks and a water without having free popcorn refills. Who does that???? Average clean theater with average surround system speakers for sound/music. Oh, Hoyt's. Is that even what it's called anymore? Does it have a new name now? I moved away, so I'm behind the times. This used to be the place to go, but it's gotten a bit run down over the years. The last time I went to a movie here, one of the theatres had a really unpleasant smell, and the ventilation wasn't the best. I'm also not a fan of their seats. They launch you so far forward, and there isn't much of a way to recline. I think the whole place needs a bit of a facelift. The concessions aren't bad, and they always have the largest selection of movies out of all the movie theatres in Bangor, but again, not always the most pleasant of experiences. read more

Two stars for the most comfortable seating I've ever had in a movie theater. Other than that, there isn't much happening that would bring me back here. The staff is fairly uninformed and doesn't seem to have customer service training at all. Let me begin with the story of our visit to the theater in a rainy summer day. I'm a Maine local and I know that the summer people can bring overwhelming amounts of business in otherwise quiet locations, but it's not something a business should shy away from when there are other options for locals. On this rainy day, the theater was packed, and seats were limited (as others noted, it's reserved seating, but it's weirdly not on Fandango?). My family and I went to see the Incredibles 2. We spent 20$ at the snack stand and another 36$ at the ticket booth. We went into our show and sat through about 2/3 of it before the movie went off and the the sound stayed off for about 10 minutes, while the movie still played. I left the theater and found out that the power had gone out and all the screens were having issues. I was told to go back in and was waiting for the movie to rewind a few minutes. It never rewound and I left the theater again to ask if they were going to go back a bit in the movie because it was at the most important part and the sound was still out. I tried to talk to multiple people and everyone said "our general manager is working on it but we don't know what is happening" the line was to the door for refunds and I was with my family with two small children. I went back into the theater again and sat with no sound for another chunk of time. At this point I figured this " general manager" would go around to the theaters that weren't working and make announcements about refunds or if they would rewind the movie. Nope. Nothing. No information. No answers. Well I wasn't going to wait in a long line with two small kids to get a refund and I figured that were going to give them at the end as movies dismissed, when we left the theater, after the sound eventually came on. Upon exiting, myself and a group of others went to the ticket booth to ask for a chance to see the movie again since the sound was out for so long and the line was long when we originally came out. The young man with the reddish beard and hair said, "um, you stayed for the rest of the movie." At which point we all replied, "yes". He looked at all of us like we were giant assholes, then said "do you have your tickets? I need to ok this with our general manager." Where the heck is this general manager?!? Well I had thrown my tickets away, because who keeps their tickets handy after they enter the theater? But I had my receipt, which I handed him, he said. "You have no tickets?" I said, " I have this receipt, I have no idea where my tickets are, but I also don't understand why this is such a big deal? I've been to theaters before where something happened that interrupted the movie and it was never an issue. I paid a lot of money to have this experience with my family." I could have waited for this movie to come to Netflix, which is what we normally do. The movies are a treat for us. An expensive treat. I expect to have an almost flawless experience because it's a video, not a live production. Well, this wasn't it. I don't want to have to argue with someone about getting a refund for something that should be a given. Eventually the worker gave us complimentary tickets to another show, but not without problems... Whoever this general manager is, better work on some employee customer service skills and make him or herself more prevalent when an issue arises in their theater. read more

was a employee for a good amount of time at the facility. I only called out when absolutely necessary and worked hard at every shift. I was told by management that I was a "waste of the general manager's payroll" to my face in the main lobby and in front of customers. I have witnessed a asst. manager get frustrated at a customer in the main lobby and throw the money drawer down into the register loudly and argue with the customer. The disrespect from the entire management staff is ridiculous. No employee is respected in any way shape or form and is taken advantage of schedule wise. Good luck future employees read more

Steve J. gets it right. It's the mall movie theatre. The screens are good but not great, the seats are good but not great. The food is crazy expensive, but not out of line with normal movie theatres. I wish they would pick more than just the blockbusters, though. It seemed like a lot of the small to medium budget/release movies never came through Bangor, even as we'd have 2 or 3 screens showing Spiderman or Harry Potter for 8 weeks. They'd rate higher for better movie selection. read more

The movies are good. Things are expensive and the lines are terrible. I love Bangor and as a Mainer I'm sad to see it dying. The movie theater isn't what a magical place it used to be. I tried going there with a friend and the line was so long that we decided to leave and find somewhere better. Adding recliners isn't going to make your place magically better. They do need a lot of improvements. Better bathroom conditions, do something about the lines, and lower your prices. These are a few reasons why I do not go to this theater. read more

Hoyts is trying something new. Assigned seating.(They just forgot to tell you.. well until after you buy the tickets and you're family is split up for the entire duration of Avengers.) We went with our family tonight to see the avengers. My husband bought the tickets while I grabbed food. I spent 32 he spent 50. They told him after he bought the tickets that they had assigned seating. We were scattered throughout the theater. Someone switched so my husband could be by our youngest. ( thank you stranger) The manager offered to refund my ticket.just mine. My point was I wouldn't have bought them if I had of known we wouldn't have been able to sit together and we would have come back. We went to the movies as a family of course we want to sit together. I installed Yelp just so I could leave this review. I won't even go back for deadpool 2. read more

What can you say? It's a mall Movie Theatre. They have a good selection of shows with 10 screens. The snacks are of course wickedly overpriced. The seats are comfortable enough, sound is dolby digital equipped. Bathrooms were acceptable. Service could be better at times. But all in all what can I say...It's a mall Movie Theatre?! Known as the Bangor Mall Cinema now--not Hoyt's--this theater has apparently not changed since I was a child and left home 24 years ago. The only difference now is that I can actually decipher when I am in a shit hole or not. No free refills--not even one--on large popcorn or soda purchase. No military discount. Smug employees who have dirty and unpresentable "uniforms". Uncomfortable seats. Ample parking because no one goes there. Never again. Travel to Spotlight for the best cinema in this area. read more

Although this is a "mall" theater, it is actually a separate building near the mall. We saw a show in a new style stadium seating theater, so everyone can see the screen, and that was good. As with every theater now, popcorn is outrageously expensive: $7.50 for a large!! Good thing tap water is still free. read more

Not sure if its a small theare or pat of a large franchise, it is in a mall, the screens and seats are okay with the theatre mostly filled up with camp kids on summer weekdays. Good theater for the area. Offered some convenient show times! I liked that they were showing my movie choice at 7:00 PM instead of midnight which more and more places are doing. However it's usually the larger theaters and so I was pleasantly surprised for one of this size. read more

They play ads for 15 minutes past the time the movie is suppose to start. The seats are fantastic recliners and the sound and screen quality is good. But they need to start on time and stop all the ads. read more

Up until my most recent visit, I had enjoyed visiting this cinema despite the fact that they could never be bothered to start their showings on time (then again, I don't recall ever visiting a theater that did.) This evening was no exception- I arrived at Hoyts planning to see The Incredibles 2, but was understandably angered when whoever was running the projector apparently decided it would be funny to shut it off for 20 minutes as the usual ads were ending. Needless to say, he or she was the only one who found it funny. I was not compensated for the inconvenience, and the staff didn't even bother to apologize. Took my date here to see the newest horror movie out at the time. Got ID checked at the counter by a lady who was very unwelcoming and rather rude. Even after confirming I was 19 she requested my dates ID which she didn't have at the time and then proceeded to refuse to sell us tickets to the movie we wanted. This theater is actually improving and they're revamping. Most of the seats are very comfortable and do recline; they have instituted free refills and large popcorn and unlimited on large pop; overall pretty good and getting better. Prices going up though. read more

this place is full of jerks. from the concession stand dubs who won't even say thank you after you plunk down 20 bucks on 3 items, right to lurch who is always at the front taking peoples tickets. i took my son to see toy story 3 and the lorax. between my son using the bathroom and us running back and forth to the concessions we left each movie at least 5 times. the same guy was there and even recognized us both times. even with an arm full of food and my son on the other hand the jerk still made me show him the ticket EVERY TIME. also they won't readmit you if you lose a ticket, even when they remember you. i'm officially done with this place. spotlight really blows these guys away! don't even waste your time with this theater. read more

I moved back after 23 years and this place has not been changed ( except I think where the entrance is and the lobby set-up but I don't remember for sure ). The inside is run-down and feels unclean. It really is over-priced for both tickets and theatre snacks ( especially for a theatre in this area ). No free refills on large tubs of popcorn or large sodas - that is pretty much an industry standard now in my experiences around the country ). But then again this is Bangor, ME which is still behind the times in many areas. When there is competition in the area that is close I would rather go to Spotlight Cinema in Orono ( less than 6 miles away ) or even Hollywood Cinemas that tickets are much less and only $3 on Tuesdays. The only things this place has going for it is the selection of movies ( usually 1 or 2 that are not played elsewhere ) and lots of parking ( but I think there are more spots than seats so that makes sense ). Get with the times BC10 and spend some money to make some money. read more

I waited til now to write my review so I would have time to cool down from last night's movie experience. Their new assigned seating is far from family fun. First off when we went to purchase our tickets we were told about it being the new seating. When I had told the front clerk we 5 together, he informed me to just pick seats and he would set us up on his end because it was a new system. A lie from the start. After my wife purchased drinks and popcorn for us ( another 30 plus dollars ) while I paid another 50 dollars in tickets.And met up at the theatre entrance.We realized our seats were still scattered all over the place. She talked to the manager who was willing to only refund just one ticket. So I had to ask a very kind couple if they could change seats because our youngest would be sitting by herself with strangers. Thank you kind couple. The whole family outting was turned into a scattered mess. Upon leaving the theatre we were asked how our experience was. "Complete let down". so to make it all better they gave us a card for free popcorn,even after we said we would not be back ever again . Moral to the story....go to different theatre if you want to go with more then 1 person (by yourself). read more
