Dr Richie was awesome. Since he's left, this place has gone so downhill. My lab suffered with a growth on her shoulder for two years because Dr. Olson said it was inoperable because it was wrapped around a muscle and also that anesthesia was too risky and that it would be like performing cosmetic surgery on an 80-year-old woman and she'd be in constant pain if we removed it. I went back a few months ago to see if they'd just remove it. She again refused, but never said that maybe another clinic would do it. She made it sound like it was something my dog had to live with and sent me home with the name of a vet who does in-home euthanasia. She said it would eventually rupture and that when it did, we'd have to have her euthanized. My poor girl was so miserable that I was going to make the dreaded call. Thankfully, my husband insisted we get a second opinion. We brought her to Veazie, and they got her right in. The vet said it was not wrapped around a muscle. He even gave up his lunch to get her into surgery ASAP. My dog is now energetic and happy, whereas before she was mopey and sleeping all of the time. I almost had her put down because I trusted someone who is obviously incompetent. The guilt I feel because my poor girl suffered with this mass unnecessarily for two years and the guilt that I almost had her put down is something I now have to live with. I'm including a photo of the mass and a photo of her postop. I should have known better. Dr. Olson was always making snide comments about how my dog was a basket case and was dramatic. I just thought Dr. Olson had a weird sense of humor. My dog would only get stressed at the vet, and I just chalked that up to the equivalent of how some people get stressed when going to the doctor's or a dentist appointment. I now believe my dog just sensed something was off and did not like Dr. Olson, because she didn't act like that at Veazie Vet. Anyway, I highly recommend Veazie Veterinary Clinic. I have been taking my 2 dogs to Dr. Remington for 7 years now. The staff is always professional and polite. Dr. Remington is ALWAYS so good to my dogs and me. She treats us like we're family. On more than one occasion, she has returned my call after business hours. You certainly don't get that from many veterinarians. She's always willing to listen, and then advise on the best plan of care. She is practical and conservative, which I really appreciate. She is very knowledgable. She always explains things in a way that is very easy to understand. I am so grateful that she takes the best care of my fur babies, and that we were fortunate enough to obtain a vet like her. I am new to the area and don't have a regular vet yet - I had no idea where to go or what to do when my cat got sick today, but thought because this was a hospital and not a standard vet, I'd have a better chance with an emergency situation. I called in around 1pm to see about getting immediate help. They told me they couldn't take any new patients and couldn't see my cat. They refused to even give me any advice over the phone. I asked if there was any other place I could go to or that could help me over the phone because I needed to see someone today. I was told to wait until the emergency vet opened at 5:30pm. My cat didn't live until then. They were totally unwilling to provide any sort of help when I desperately needed it. This is not a place I'd want to trust any more of my pets with. read more

In defense of this very busy practice: I see some negative reviews concerning not taking new clients, not having emergency apts. available and long waits for an apt. Dr. Richie has retired and they have been months trying to find a replacement vet to join the practice. They are booked up solid every day and there are only so many overtime hours a vet can work. Other vets are busy, too, and it is hard to find one still taking new clients. There is a shortage of vets in Maine and no one to take up the slack. I've been their client for over 15 years and I've always had the very best of care for my cats from all the vets and techs there. Personally, my phone conversations with the front desk have always been polite and helpful, even though appointments for under 2 weeks away are hard to get these days. If the people answering the phones are less than helpful, they do need to get their act together, however. While I sympathize with a situation where the phone is ringing all the time and people are irate over the lack of available time slots, their job is to remain professional & courteous and I'm sorry to hear not everyone is performing to this standard. My advice to new-to-the-area pet owners is to start calling vets today and set up a wellness check appointment as soon as you find one taking new clients. As an established client, the odds of getting fast emergency care will be better. read more

I had been a client for several years. I am looking elsewhere. Here are my reasons. The staff seems inconvenienced by their clients. The staff is rude and the "Holier than thou" attitude is not appreciated. The doctor WOULD NOT look me in the eyes. They do not seem to feel the need to trim nails even when asked multiple times during a visit. Having an empty Parking lot and waiting for over 15 minutes after my appointed time is unacceptable. There are many other clinics in the area. Since I am not valued as a client, I will be spending my time and money elsewhere. read more

Please listen to me. If you have pets who do not go outside (one 18lb dog with allergies/anxiety issue and two cats that are happy sitting on their cat tower bird watching) do not over vaccinated them. In older animals the Rabies vaccine sometimes/will overwhelm their immune system. It is too late for Trey. I found out from friends and the internet they could have given them a 1 year rabies vaccine or waive them all together. Groomers will give them a bath and hair cut as long you have the paper that the vaccines have been waived. My beloved 15 1/2 year old cat had the kidney disease. Please I am begging you find another veterinary. On Nov 28, he received the 3 year rabies vaccine and another one. I ask her don't you want to check his blood she said No. I said Ok thinking everything will be find. 32 hours later at 4:15pm he had a stroke. I did not know it at the time. I called the vet and tried to explain to problem I told them his looks like he is drunk and peed on himself. He has never peed outside the litter box. I was in a panic the first receptionist told me where about to close and if an emergency go to the emergency vet in Brewer. They did not close until 5 pm and I lived in Bangor 3 miles away I can be there in 10 minutes. I called again the other receptionists I told her the problem in calmer voice what is going on with Trey. She said it sound like he is having a seizer. That calms me down. I know what to do with a seizer. The next day I took him in. That when I found out he had a stoke. Dr. Remington told me this happen now and than or sometimes (I can not remember her exact words. She for me to try to keep him calm and I do not want to give him meds (for Hypertension high blood press) because cats do not like to take pills and you will end up chasing him around to house to give his the pill which will make it worst. You can try to give him 81mg of aspirin twice a week. If you ever have an old cat the older they get the more picky the get about their food. I crush the aspirin in his food e.g. Beef bone broth, tuna with mayo (that was his favorite). He would not eat it. He seem he was getting better he was back to his old self letting cabinet doors slam in the middle of the night so I wake up to give him greenies and eating. But then he would tense up not like the first time, but I found out his was having another stroke. I wish I just put him a sleep. But I did not know I wish I research it more thoroughly but I thought his was having a reaction to the vaccines. I did read in the internet about 18 years old cat had the same issue and got better. I went back in on the 21st of Dec for another tube of ointment for his other eye because he looks like he hit it. I find out his retina was detach. Dr. Remington inform me we can reattach it. I said no and ask if he could see. She said yes but only shadows. I know how to take care of blind dogs. On Dec 25 at 3:45 he was breathing very heavy. I ask God please let him die. Fifteen minutes later I see movement for his cat carry. To find out God answer my wishes. I wanted to make sure a half another later I check on him He was gone. The emergency hospital told me put his garage or shed it was cold enough until you can take him to your vet or us. I was in no condition to drive. The next day I took him in. On Jan 17th I called the office to see if his ashes are in I was told they are and I was call on the 3rd I check my phone they did call but they never left a voice mail. I told her I wanted to talk to Dr. Remington and ask you why she did that to him she could have just waived his vaccinations. The women told me your are the one who wanted him vaccinated. I told her I am not a vet how am I suppose what would happen. At the time I knew it was the law you have to vaccinate your pet if they need to go the groomers. On the 21st of Jan I pick him up and ask the recorders of my two other pets. Dr. Remington came out to the lobby and asks if I wanted to talk. I reply I wish I knew then what I know now. She took me into an empty room I ask her why you did not waive his vaccination you could have waive it and you knew none of them went outside except to go to groomer and vet. All she could say she was sorry. I told her you're not sorry you wanted to operate on his eye. I went on to say with tears in my eyes I really like you guys and I trusted you with my children, I corrected myself and said pets (I am going to them since 2008.) Something is wrong here I hope you can fix it. The next day find out they only gave me record of one of them. I had to call again the get the other record. In the back round I heard someone say I gave her both. I told the women on the phone I only have records for Clarence please send me Ralphie records. She mail them to me. They aren't the best behaved and having them both in a stressful setting like the Vet's for the first time at the same time really complicated things. However, our vet nailed it. Despite all of the stress the staff was very calm and professional and I cannot thank this team enough for just helping us get in and out with as little stress as necessary. Thank you guys. Today will be the last time I take my cats to this veterinary office. I was given a 7:45 appt. to have my male cat neutered and was told I would be spending 20 to 30 minutes with the vet for a consult before my cat was taken in for the procedure. When I arrived at the office there were 8 to 9 dogs in the waiting area which all started barking and did not quiet down for several minutes. Each time another person walked in the front door the barking would start again. I waited from 7:45 until 8:35 to be finally called for the consult and pre-exam. I have never had to experience such wait times and exposure to dogs in over 30 years of taking my pets to the veterinarian's office and will never subject myself or my pets at this practice again. read more

The Dr's. that have taken care of my pet were good. I actually liked taking my pet there until recently. The customer service of one of the front desk people is RUDE and that's being kind. Life is short try to show a little kindness. Today was my third time with this person the moment she answers the phone I know who it was and then I got lucky to be waited on by her when I got to the office and she cut me right off so not to be as rude as she and say something in front of an office full of people I left. We recently changed to this Veterinary Hospital because we didn't think our previous vet was giving our dog the attention he deserved, it was difficult to get an appointment and when we did, we would often still wait an hour, somehow instead of a once a year wellness visit, they got us into twice a year cycle, which was unnecessary as he is young and in good health and we thought the prices were a bit high. We couldn't be happier with our experience at Bangor Veterinary Hospital. Regular customer for years but when I called to make an appointment for my dog who had been seen over the weekend at the Emergency Vet Clinic in Brewer, the receptionist responded: "Well I hope you don't think you're going to get an appointment today or tomorrow. I am a great fan of this vet. I get annoyed b/c of the office visit charges - even for minor things like getting a bordatella vaccination. However, that just goes with the territory I suppose. I've taken my dogs and cats here for a number of years. Their fees are very reasonable. It isn't unreasonable to pay for an office visit even for minor things. My doctor gets paid for their time and expertise even for minor issues, so I would expect my veternarian deserves the same. I rarely wait longer than 10 minutes unlike my doctors office where I normally cool my heels for much longer. I usually take the early mornings like 7:45 and have not had that many critters in the office. Additionally, I was able to take my dog in for an emergency removal of a large number of quills. read more

Dr. Richie truly is the best veterinarian around. I've been seeing him for 2 years with my 10 1/2 year old Cocker Spaniel. I first chose Bangor Veterinary Hospital after trying three other vets before them in an effort to get the best care & pricing for a surgery for my newly adopted dog. Dr. Richie is always extremely thorough with you in explaining your dog's health and any illness they may be experiencing. At every appointment, he will educate you about your dog, discuss with you the options for treating each problem, and advises you when certain procedures or treatments may be unnecessary or just a way to spend more money. Dr. Richie also advises you if and/or how a given problem will impact the dog in their later years. (This is great as I am an obsessed dog owner who will go to any length to see my dog reach 15+ years old). They cared for my dog wonderfully for her outpatient surgery. In the two years since our initial meeting, Dr. Richie has treated my dog with the most caring demeanor and always has her best interest in mind. He takes a conservative approach to treating problems and does not just rush to medication or surgery. He welcomes trying alternative methods to cure or improve long standing problems. About 4 months after getting our dog, we moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Get this- we still use Dr. Richie as our vet today. Even after moving, Dr. Richie still allows my dog to come to his office for her regular veterinary care. We make appointments for her when we come to visit family, and they are always accommodating to our availability. We even drive from Augusta when seeing family to bring our pup here. This is just because Dr. Richie is amazing and we would not trust our baby with anyone else. We will continue going to Dr. Richie for as long as we can! read more

All of your vets are so good with all my dogs. Dr. Richie has been my vet since I was a kid and he came to our barns. His daughter seems to have that same special touch that he does and Tori Weston, well, she recently couldn't have made me happier. My Aussie's lungs were full of fluid and with her care we just took our first hike in 5 mos. and he hasn't coughed at all. :) She even called here a week after he was on his meds to make sure he was doing well. Horrible vet office. The staff behind the desk are rude and act as though it's incredibly inconvenient to speak with clients. I had a pretty serious emergency with a toxicity and they were so unbelievably unhelpful, they just told me to wait 4 more hours to go to the e-clinic because they were too busy that day to deal with it. I had asked if I should induce vomiting at home in the mean time and was advised not to because as they said " it could be too late anyways ". Well thankfully I called a family member who is an LVT, she advised otherwise and my dog then vomited everything up in two huge piles after just one dose of hydrogen peroxide. I used to love this place, however staff has changed and its just not a pleasant experience what so ever any more. Incredibly disappointing. Thankfully, the e-clinic was wonderful and they too seemed shocked at how we were treated over the phone by Bangor Vet and said had we listened to the advice given of not inducing vomiting, our dog would have been in much worse shape then he was. We will be changing vet offices immediately. I do not recommend this place if you want quality care for your pets. read more
