I towed my car to a busy garage in Merced, because the brakes pulled wildly to the left and was unsafe to drive home from Modesto. When I picked it up, it was immediately clear they hadn't driven it after repair, because there was still something extremely wrong with the brakes. I had used Banks probably 20 years ago, and decided to try them again. Sadly, a major electrical component of the ABS system was broken and had to be replaced. The mechanic communicated the problem clearly, He shopped to find a used part for me, and finished the repairs quickly. I have been using Banks for my alignment and brake work for decades, since the original owner, Ed Banks Sr, then his son Ed Jr, and finally his son John all owned it. I recently backed into a curb and had problems with my ABS and 4WD thereafter. I stopped into Banks to discover that it had a new owner, Juan Vargas. After discussing my problem with one of their techs, Jesus, I was able to make an appt for the next day and also asked them to check my brakes while the tires were off. I couldn't be more pleased with Jesus' patient explanation of the likely problem and how easy and reasonably priced it would be to fix. I appreciated the ride home while they kept it to work on, as well as the ride back to pick it up that afternoon. I also observed this young man's kind and professional interactions with several other customers and was very impressed with his expert knowledge of his trade. He made the whole experience comfortable and painless, which is rarely the case when you need vehicle repairs. I went from being worried that the Banks family had sold their business, to being thankful for the new owner and highly qualified techs. I can assure you that you will be too. I went into Banks shop---I asked him to remove electronic ignition (per/my husband request) 8/7 9:18 I called Banks, spoke with John I asked for a UPDATE on car (had vehicle for 2-weeks) John response "He has been real busy but would get to our car next week and would be in touch" 8/17 9:26 I called Bank, spoke with John again requesting progress---John response "He had driven our car and it seemed to have No=Problems---John promised to deliver our car to our house on Saturday" 8/23 9:40 Saturday: John, from Banks Auto Shop called me stating "He would deliver our car Monday morning because he was leaving to babysit his grandchild" NO CALL---NO SHOW NO CAR Monday 8/24 or Tuesday 8/24 8/26 3:22 My son a (CHP Officer) and myself drove to Banks to pick up our car which Banks had for 6-weeks John prepared a Invoice totaling $179.00 (I-PAID) Invoice stated cleaned cap and rotor John stated it was his birthday and he was closing up shop early 3:45 pm My son started up our 1963 Plymouth Valiant---immediately the car was spurting and trying to die 3:55 pm Car DIED at address 1040 High St. .1 mile (2-minutes walking)---I could see the back of Banks Shop---I immediately called John/Banks John response "Have the car towed to your house I will come to your house and look at it tomorrow" 3:59 pm I called AAA tow service. My son and I waited 2 and 1/2 hours at 100 degree temperatures to have our car towed to our home after driving off of Banks Auto Shop. I am older (70) 6:45 pm AAA Tow truck showed up and delivered our broken down car to our home 8/27 3:03 pm John, owner of Banks Auto shop called explained he had driven the car around Atwater had did not have any problems. John said "He would stop by our home Monday 8/31 to check our car" 8/28 9:31 am I called Banks/owner John No answer so I left message telling John " First: my husband is a Certified ASE mechanic--although he is currently 100% disabled veteran (Agent Orange) and unable to do the work---he knows what work needs to be done. I reminded John I had told him at the time of dropping our car off my husband had requested ELECTRONIC IGNITION be removed---Yet after keeping our car 6-weeks he had only cleaned the cap and rotor. I told John do not bothering coming to our home on Monday 8/31 we will be taking it another mechanic. We are very disappointed because we have used Banks Auto Shop for years. We have always used Banks as our Go-To for all our auto repairs but after our latest experience we will be taking our business elsewhere. read more

My mother has had John, his brother and their father work on her car for years. They have always been fair and went over and beyOnd the call of duty to make sure she was treated right. The only problem I see is they don't charge quite enough and aren't pushy enough to motivate a person to fix something that ought to be fixed pronto. They must figure we are all adults and make rational decisions when they are presented with the facts. read more
