I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Sandra Banks. She has literally, saved my life. Before becoming her patient 3 years ago I was nearly bedridden. I couldn't breathe, my heart wasn't working as it should, and I couldn't physically move around. I made an appointment to see her. Dreading the typical response I had been getting "Lose weight! Eat less, move more! Have gastric bypass surgery!" That I had gotten from every doctor BEFORE her. I go in, explain my situation, explain my previous lifestyle before this started, and she says, " we will figure this out." And she DID! I am now more active, able to play with my 2-year-old granddaughter and get out to visit with friends. I do not like to take normal prescriptions, preferring to use a more natural remedy whenever possible, she is highly knowledgeable about alternative medicine and traditional medicine giving me the perfect treatment for my way of life. Her bedside manner is great! In life, I truly believe you are treated the way you treat others. She always listens intently, explains things thoroughly, and always follows up. This doctor came highly, highly recommended at a different review site that shall go unnamed. Unfortunately, Yelp hasn't the breadth of doctors and specialist reviews that some other sites have or else I probably would've had a more tempered expectation and/or selected differently. I don't consider myself a high maintenance client/patient in the sense that I very rarely reach out for medical attention. I'm very healthy and only get screened yearly as recommended by the AMA. Therefore, choosing a doctor with a decent disposition and good follow up is important to me for the 15 minutes a year I spend with him/her. My first visit, last year, was pleasant enough, despite the intensely stressful atmosphere in the front office and in the practice itself [suffering through a nurse shortage]. We went over my entire medical history, had a physical exam and pap performed, and the few questions I had were satisfactorily addressed. I received a prompt call with routine test results a short while later and didn't have another interaction with the practice again until this year. While only there to receive my annual exam and pap, I had a very specific concerns about an ongoing prescription that I brought up early on in the visit. The visit was awkward and uncomfortable. I don't know if Dr. Banks was having another bad day or what, but there was a palpable unease in the air. And I don't like being uneasy where my vagina's involved. Her bedside manner was inexplicably salty. I sat there, feeling bad about stuff that really needn't be brought up as one slips her feet into cold stirrups: the recession, my aging eggs, the big scary mammograms in my future. She scolded me about wearing sun block despite the fact I wear it every day of my life. I can't help it if I'm not Norwegian. I tan with little provocation. I told her as much and she essentially shrugged it off. My concerns about my prescription [which I did a lot of research on with the help of a regarded medical researcher] were more or less ignored. She changed my prescription, per my request, but not to what I requested. I tried what she gave me for two months - for the sake of not injuring ego - and the side effects were horrendous. I called in and left a message stating so [it's very difficult to get a hold of anyone] and I eventually got a prescription for what I wanted. But I felt like I had to jump through hoops. I know doctors get annoyed with all the self-diagnosed hypochondriacs who spend their time on Web M.D but I'm not one of them. Despite how infrequently I go to the doctor, I am proactive in my care. I don't like being treated or spoken to like a child. Also, I'm not much of a hoop-jumper. As such, the search for a pcp/gynecologist continues. Why 3 stars instead of 2 or 1? While I think she's not the right fit for me, Dr. Banks would suit some -- perhaps the vast majority -- of people just fine. If you implicitly trust your doctor or don't have much cause for exploring alternatives to your current regimen, she'd work as well as any of the other of hundreds of other options. read more

Update, I am sad to say that after so long i have to change my rating. When i needed to see her most i was 15 late for my appointment they refused to see me and when i argued this with the staff i was kicked out of her practice. So when a front staff person can kick you out of seeing a dr and also from the practice itself after 7 yrs that is a BIG deal!! To have all your medical records and appointments and have to start over because i argued with them over the phone!!! Not just that but I even kept getting rescheduled endlessly so when i have to redo my schedule because bank is on vacation and then i show 15 minutes late and she can't give me the same in turn after being a loyal patient this was unmanageable! It takes MONTHS to get an appointment NEVER AGAIN!!! CONS: The office staff is horrible. I am soo surprised that a bunch of intelligent Dr.'s would allow an office to be run the way it is. The nurses that i encounter do not have a good attitude with the patients. They are very monotone when speaking with you. Very quick and short and tend to complain about things like not having supplies available. I have yet to get a call back the same day with a concern i have. it's usually 24-48 hours later and i have to call Rose back and remind her i called and to please call me back. Checking out is difficult as well. The woman is rude and never has a smile on her face. She barely makes eye contact with you and is rude when you ask her questions. I have been in the office a bit and that is my same experience with all the people there. Adrienne the referral woman is not helpful either. I ask her questions about the test and how i make the appointment and she snaps the orders at me like i am suppose to know what the tests are and exactly how to say them and i should know exactly where i am going. The staff fails to understand that just because they know, doesn't mean us civilians do. I tolerate her staff because I like Dr. Banks, but my last visit may change some things. I didn't like being paraded around the office with my gown and no clothes on. I asked the nurse for another gown to cover my back but she retied it and said i would be fine. She then took me and another man who followed behind me to get X-Rays on the other side of the office. I could feel the air on my back so i knew it was open and i didn't like how uncomfortable i felt in that paper thin gown sitting inches away from the man waiting for X-Rays. I thought that was highly inappropriate! The office is somewhat clean but it appears to be an older office and decor is none. I know petty but just an FYI. This practice has a lot of Dr's as well so have your pick. Hope this helps out a little read more

If you value a doctor's office with an excellent support staff; ie, nurses, records dept., Please do not trust your health or life with this practice. Nurse made several obvious mistakes and instead of admonishing her to improve her service; I was discharged without a reason by a certified letter. I would give 0 stars if I could. I went to Dr. Banks after receiving two recommendations from my other doctors (one of whom said, "It's who I sent my mother to." My first appointment was very thorough. She did a very detailed work-up and allowed plenty of time for me to ask questions. I love the fact that she is not condescending. She treats you as an intelligent adult, and shares her opinion freely. Although my visits have been mostly for annual exams (once for a cat bite), I have been very impressed. I referred one friend who has also had very positive experiences. I've never had a problem with office staff. Wait times have been pretty reasonable (though I usually go early) and I've found the nurses and check-out experiences to be just fine. Referrals (to a dermatologist to check out moles) went just fine. I would recommend her without reservation. read more

Incredible customer service! Everyone in the office is incredibly professional and never fail to make me feel extremely well cared for. She, along with the rest of the staff here, is everything I could have hoped for. She has been my physician for several years now and has always provided the absolute best care, and I believe, best advice and treatment during every visit and for every issue. If you are looking for a doctor whose medical knowledge is encyclopedic, treats the whole person, and takes the time to be caring even while maintaing a very efficient office, then this is your place. I have been going to Dr. Banks for several years and have always liked her and felt very comfortable that I was getting excellent medical care. I travel quite a distance to see Dr. Banks, but unfortunately, will be finding another doctor due to the STAFF in her office. Her medical assistant is unresponsive and I have to wait and wait and then call again when I don't hear back within a reasonable time. I don't believe she reports information correctly to Dr. Banks and is not helpful at all answering my questions. It is a shame I have to quit using a doctor that I respect because of staff members. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Banks for over 5 years. I have tolerated her lack of bedside manner because I appreciate her holistic knowledge combined with western medicine. The nurses and staff at this practice are HORRIBLE though. Very unprofessional, rude, gossiping and complaining while with patients and unresponsive to phone calls. Recently, I called to ask Dr. Banks for a RX. No response for 2 weeks so I called her nurse who told me "Dr Banks said this is on her list and she will get to it eventually." I have been a patient of Dr. Banks for 16 years. In all that time I can honestly say she has always listened to my concerns. She never rushes me through a visit and spends time to make sure she has done everything she can to resolve my issue. Sometimes people expect doctors to be more than human. She is a capable and reliable physician with a family of her own. She has seen me through a heart valve transplant, several kidney stone surgeries, and has always been there to resolve any physical problem. Without her diagnosis and referral I would not have been alive today. Dr. Banks is an internal medicine specialist. She is not a gynecologist. She usually refers patients to other specialist professionals as needed. I have found her to be open to discussion on medications and the pros and cons involved in taking them. I am very proactive in my healthcare and saw a partner in that care with Dr. Banks. I appreciate her knowledge and believe she is dedicated to the good health of her patients. I do not have the expectation that a physician has to paste a smile on their face when they walk in. Bedside manners seem to be mandatory however I believe a good knowledge base of medicine is more important. I have read other reviews on yelp and it amazes me that if one of the concerns I have was not addressed that it became the doctors problem because it was not brought up. If I have a concern you can be sure that I will bring it up as many times as I need to because I am responsible for me. I look to Dr. Banks for her knowledge base and a thorough discussion regarding my physical ailments. I can rely on her for an honest evaluation and the best options offered. My experience with Dr. Banks has been consistently above average over 3 visits since 2008. She takes time with me and hears out my concerns and my medical (and pseudo-medical internet info) questions and responds frankly, often with a sense of humor. She is knowledgeable of nutritional supplements, alternative (vegan) diets and took extra time to write out for me sources for highest grade nutritional supplements to complement my prescription. My chiropractor and my 2nd doctor --a highly regarded specialist -- were very pleased upon hearing that I'm seeing Dr. Banks where I would get expert, professional and knowledgeable care. That 2 other medical professionals think highly of her speaks volumes. The office is high volume and busy, in the Northside Hospital complex, so don't expect the family feel of a small private practice.
