The reviews are misleading... Before my son was born, I went through and read a lot of reviews from different hospitals and was nervous about going to Banner Desert - where my OB delivered. I could not have had a more dramatically different experience than what I saw in the reviews - it's safe to say that the management has heard your concerns! We came in at 9:30pm to a very full labor and delivery floor - cancelled the inductions for the day & a woman had been waiting for a delivery room for 7 hours longer than me... Things were not looking too promising. The nurse in triage, Kristy (I hope I'm spelling that right) moved MOUNTAINS for us. She continuously let us know what was going on on the floor and how my labor was progressing. When there was no delivery room available and the nurses were literally spread to their max, she found a way for us to get to a room to help alleviate my pain and welcome my son into the world. I have never felt more looked after than I did with her. Following that, the postpartum ward was delightful! The team that works in there is extremely respectful and caring. Food wise, pretty good! Not the typical icky hospital food that you hear about! If you get the chocolate chip cookie, put it next to a piece of bread for a little bit and it isn't as dry & oh so much more yummy! I hope & pray that everyone gets to have my experience! Even the OB who was on call... I don't know if I would have remotely the same delivery experience if it wasn't for him & his gentle encouragement throughout - you are the best Dr. Canestraro! read more

Banner Desert Hospital in Mesa Arizona failed my father in every possible way during what would be the last weeks of his life. My father was admitted on April 16th 2026 with a confirmed cancer diagnosis that had already been documented in his medical records. He sat in that hospital for five days before a single oncologist walked through his door. Five days. When the oncologist finally came on April 21st it was the first time my father had ever seen an oncologist in his entire life. And it happened on the day they were trying to discharge him. The discharge paperwork they tried to send him home with was factually inaccurate. His CT scan performed right there in that building showed possible pancreatitis, bowel wall thickening, gallstones, aggressive malignant ascites, severely elevated bilirubin of 12.80, and compromised kidney function. None of it was on his discharge papers. They listed cirrhosis and noted he should get a blood test to check for liver cancer. He already had confirmed liver cancer. That is not a clerical error. That is negligence. They tried to discharge my father for three to four days before we even had a chance to arrange proper care elsewhere. When we finally had an appointment at City of Hope they discharged him to a hotel because they refused to transfer him directly to the cancer center the way it should have been done for a critically ill cancer patient. When I advocated for my father and asked questions about his care and his inaccurate discharge paperwork they called security on me. Twice. I was not threatening anyone. I was a daughter fighting for her dying father. That is what they called security for. Nurses Kelsey and Ashley were dismissive, cold, and treated my father without dignity or compassion. They did not do their jobs and their lack of care was witnessed by our entire family. The one exception was nurse Merisol who treated my father with the kindness, warmth, and professionalism that every patient deserves. She was the only bright light in an otherwise disgraceful experience. My father came home after leaving this facility and passed away shortly after. He deserved so much better. Every patient who walks through those doors deserves so much better. If the people running this hospital ever have to admit their own parents here I hope they receive the exact same level of care that my father received. Maybe then they will understand what they put our family through. Do not come here unless you have no other choice. And if you do end up here ask for Merisol and pray she is your nurse. This hospital is under investigation and I am pursuing every legal avenue available to me. read more

If at night you need to see them for a problem, she tells you: No. I did my rounds in the morning already!!!! Which attentive Dr. Speaks this way? I will never have surgery at this hospital again. I had major c spine surgery, I woke up with almost no use of my arms/hands and I had a 5 lb weight limit. I needed help to sit up from bed in order to go to the bathroom etc. I needed help with everything, eating, restroom, itching my face, everything. The staff wasnt helpful and never even offered to help with anything, brushing my teeth, cleaning up, they never changed my sheets, never got me a new gown in my 7 day stay. My room was barely bigger than a closet, only 1 light worked in my room, my remote didnt work so I would have had to push the nurse light on the bed, up by my head but I couldnt because I couldnt get my hand up there and even if I could I didnt have the strength to push it. I had to have someone with me my entire stay. The hour that I didnt have anyone with me was bad and proved to me that had I been on my own it wouldnt have been good at all. On top of that they collected the rest of my out of pocket the morning of my surgery but it wasnt applied to my bill, I never got anything from them about the credit sitting on my account and when I called 2 months later they told me it could take 45 days to refund my card, its been almost a month and I still dont have that credit. On top of that I am getting billed for Dr's who never examined me as the only Dr's I saw in my room that week were my own Dr's that came in every morning and the hospitalist who I saw 3 times. read more

This has been a review that I've wanted to leave since my friend passed away in April. The kindness of the nurses were fantastic and I can't thank them enough and made sure to get their names to say thank you. Chelsea, Rachel, Adam, and Kate - thank you! Though we ultimately would say our farewells to my friend on life support, you made this process as easy as it could be. That type of care is often hard to find, and I'll be forever grateful for all of them. Random, but I do love the train display! The staff seemed all hands on deck, we got there and had maybe 10 at least in the room for our 10 months old. He had a bad fall so ended up in trauma. Ended up breaking his mastoid bone, but after doing mri, x-rays, and Kat scan seemed like we were the last to know because we got there at 12pm and left at 9pm... finally someone came in at 7:30 to tell us he was going to be ok after having a 5ft fall and blood coming from his right ear drum we were freaking out... we were told keep an eye on him and he broke his mastoid which was the best outcome considering the others just wish we didn't have to wait so long to find out he's going to be ok. It was a very traumatic thing to have to go through but I am glad for all the hands on deck, never seen blood coming from the ear drum like that but in movies so it was rough. My only complaint is took forever finding out about the results.. read more

This is a lovely facility. Unfortunately, our emergency department experience was not great. Sadly, we have experienced several emergency departments because my daughter has a chronic medical issue, and this experience was not good. On the bright side, the emergency department was clean and bright, and felt overall safe. They told us they prioritize by a level of acute need. I didn't see anyone in there bleeding to death, but I did see my daughter writhing around on the floor. She was in pain, throwing up, felt cold, and was very pale. What shocked me was that when we received the medical records after the visit to show to her primary care physician, they said that the patient arrived in no apparent distress!!!! And that is why I'm giving a low score on this Yelp review. I don't know what their definition is of apparent distress, but my daughter was definitely in distress. They ended up giving her a shot of morphine for the pain. Do they give morphine to people who are not in distress? I don't know who does their medical charting, but it was way off base. I recently underwent a cardiac ablation procedure to treat my atrial fibrillation, and I cannot say enough good things about the experience. From start to finish, the care I received was exceptional. The medical team was incredibly professional and compassionate. Before the procedure, my cardiologist took the time to explain everything in detail--what to expect, how the ablation would work, and the potential benefits. They answered all my questions patiently, which really put me at ease. The pre-procedure process was smooth, with clear instructions about preparation and what to bring to the hospital. On the day of the procedure, the staff at the hospital were fantastic. The nurses were attentive and made sure I was comfortable, and the anesthesiologist explained the sedation process clearly, so I felt calm going into the procedure. The ablation itself went seamlessly. I was under sedation, so I do not remember much, I woke up feeling okay, with one small issue that required an overnight stay. I stayed overnight for monitoring, and the staff checked on me regularly to ensure everything was going well. They provided clear instructions for post-procedure care, including activity restrictions and signs to watch for. I have never been treated with so much care and respect. Each one of my nurses were awesome and they took the time to talk to me and allow me to jabber. Nice, new, modern hospital. Free parking! I was previously a patient at Banner Desert Medical Center Emergency Department and was placed in a room that did not meet my expectations. The bed rails had visible bloodstains, and the floor was littered with trash, which was also overflowing from the trash can. It appeared that the room had not been properly cleaned prior to my occupancy. I am concerned that such conditions could lead to patients becoming sicker due to exposure to previous patients' germs. Upon returning for my procedure, I was assigned to Room 210 A in the ICU, where I found a thick layer of dust covering various surfaces, suggesting that the room had not been thoroughly cleaned in some time. Given the ICU's focus on critical care, I expect a higher level of cleanliness and sanitation. I question the role of the Environmental Services (EVS) department and whether they are fulfilling their responsibilities. It seems that the EVS management team may need to take steps to improve the cleaning protocols. I was disappointed with my experience. I gave 2 stars solely because the nurses in the ICU were satisfactory. read more

Banner's pediatric staff did a really great job taking care of our son before, during, and after his surgery. We have to give some major props to the entire Children's Hospital for their attentive medical care and bedside manner. We feel really blessed to have had them in our corner... they built trust and lived up to that standard. read more

What can improve? Everything. Not even sure where to begin. My mom came here on the 17,December 2025 bc she had a broken femur - had surgery the next day on the 18th. They were told she had a UTI and was on antibiotics prior to her fall. They failed to treat that after surgery and she went sepsis. The care here at Banner Desert needs to improve. Healthcare staff also should be schooled on what it means when a patient has dementia and or advanced Alzheimer's. This was a huge problem. Her surgery and recovery time (from her broken femur) wasn't bad; what was bad, was the fact she went sepsis and was so ill from that and a few other things. She was a mess. After all that, Banner Desert decided to discharge her on Christmas Eve without my knowledge and without anyone there. Banner just sent her to a post acute rehabilitation facility. My mom should have never been discharged in the condition she was in. I could go on however I will end my review here. If I could give zero stars I would! This place was a joke!!! The Physician Assistant that I saw in the Emergency Department didn't listen & only started to do her job once I called her out on it. I went in for my leg, but she ordered tests for "abdominal pain". The tech that performed the abdominal scan, saw my leg, and asked if they had ordered an ultrasound for my leg. Clearly, it was noticeable that I was there for my leg & not abdominal pain. Talk about not being listened to!!! Let's also not forget how I was told by the nursing staff several times they forgot about me. I had to file a grievance with my insurance for unnecessary tests and not treating my leg. read more

My daughter was seen by our pediatrician and did a blood test but doesn't have full labs, something was very concerning to her in the test but since she didn't have labs and it was late she told us to rush to the ER and said it could be an emergency, said we need full labs and to potentially be treated. Banner doesn't seem to think it's a big deal, they literally scoffed at my wife and I when we told them we just got sent here for immediate bloodwork. Horrible care with a few employees on power trips. Doctors refusing to see or follow up with patients even when requested. Dr sameer bellapravalu and state employee Chere stanenfeld love power trips. Dr. B is an internal medicine doctor is in charge of the behavioral health department yet makes commitments and petitions for 72 hour holds without seeing the patient. We have talked to 3 charge nurses, the house supervisor, (the chief of staff refuses to talk to us). Everyone says their hands are tied, yet 5 days and her neurological issues have worsened, her anxiety has worsened. We are unable to make progress as patient advocates aren't in until tomorrow or Wednesday. This has been a total shit show. Dr. B has ghosted all nurses, the family etc and refuses to talk to the patient or her family. I've been in contact with an attorney and see nothing more I can do but to sue the hospital and state (Chere is a state employee) and some of the staff. I guess we'll just get millions due to lack of care, and no answers! I wouldn't bring my worst enemy here for care. At this point we will take it all the way including licenses being revoked by the state. Also nurse Kelsey who was also on a power trip, brought 4 security officers into the area when I came to visit because I told her I've been in contact with an attorney. Nurse Kelsey lied numerous times to the patient and family! My granddaughter was denied her meds and physical therapy for days, thereby making her medical conditions worse. Now I, as her advocate and help, have to start all over again. Including causing her to miss her counseling appointments and physical therapy appointments. We were visiting from Southern California when he had a stroke and was transported their by ambulance. All of the staff we encountered over four days was amazing and I really feel the doctors there spent more time with us and expressed genuine interest and concern. the nursing staff in every department from ER to observation were so personable and available. Nurse Amber--who I believe may have been expecting--handled a combative, belligerent patient across from me with remarkable grace. He was agitated, possibly dealing with mental or chemical issues, but she calmly reassured him while he cursed at her. I had to step in and tell him, "If they didn't care, they wouldn't be here." Major respect to Amber, Marcus, and another kind young lady (whose name I missed) for showing patience and compassion under pressure. Stephen came in confident and composed--immediately made me feel like I was in good hands. And Erica? Pure sunshine. She helped with the paperwork, cracked jokes with me about no one actually reading the fine print, and made sure I was prepped for discharge--plus she sent me off with a bag of snacks to go with the apples and tangerines I brought from home: turkey sandwich, two apple juices, and a carton of milk for my cereal the next morning. Now that's top-tier service. Dr. Shepard was attentive, respectful, and didn't brush off my concerns--a welcome change from previous docs I've encountered. I was in and out in a few hours. Hospital I had to go into the ER the way time was very long even being brought in by ambulance. We had to wait in the hall for at least an hour to get a room before anyone could be see me. The doctors and nurses were very nice. Such a terrible experience. They ordered the wrong procedure so we spent a day waiting g for them to figure it out (doctor ordered an MRA not and MRI). My daughter has regular meds, and they had the list and said she would get them. We asked all morning. Finally at 1pm she has an anxiety attack and breaks down crying, and what do you the medicine shows up. It took 90.minutes to get a salad for dinner, and again it showed up after we asked about it ( the call button was ignored for so long i pushed call and cancel 15 times until they fi ally showed up). My call button dropped on the floor. After waiting over an hour of no one checking on me, I used my cell phone to call the nurses station. Finally had to yell for help when someone passed by. After being told I was being discharged, I was only discharged after threatening to just leave, 6-hours later! No on checked my cath-bag. Leaked all over the floor! Been in Room W512 since Monday, 3-16-26 for a dislocated hip. I have been scheduled for surgery 6 times since Thursday. MARCH 18. 2026. Just to be pushed to the end of the day...around 1800...Just to be canceled and rescheduled for 'first operation in the am'. By 1900 the night prior to my SURGERY....my FIRST OPERATION IN THE MORNING is already moved to the end of the day again.My HIP IS DISLOCATED...I CAN'T WALK. I need treatment. I turned 65 12 days ago. Does my MEDICARE have something to do about the continuous rescheduling of my appointment? I believe it just might. read more

Horrible care quality! My 74 year old father has been to Banner Desert 3 times within the last month for a low heart rate and atrial fibrillation. He has an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) yet, after they interrogated the ICD, they said there are no events recorded. Clearly he had events so why is the ICD not recording them? Furthermore, why is the ICD not working to keep his heart rate up and in rhythm? Every X-ray, ultrasound, and CT scan has come back negative. During his last visit, my parents were told he needed to stay overnight for observations. My dad attempted to have a smoke break but was denied. They eventually gave him a nicotine patch at 8:00 the next morning. My 73 year old mother has severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and congestive heart failure and not once did they offer her a recliner in the 9 hours she waited until they could admit him. Once they had admitted my father, she asked if she could have a recliner and she was told they do not have any available and gave her a plastic chair. There were more than 10 available recliners nearby, including one in the next to theirs. It also took the staff over an hour to get them water and tea. The cafeteria was closed for cleaning so I offered to have food delivered to them. It was almost 10:00 so very difficult to find a place nearby that was not only open but on the delivery list. The staff finally found some sandwiches for them after they heard me on speaker phone. After the 24 hour observation, they told my parents his enzymes were normal so they released him. They never looked at his medication to see if there was an issue and sure enough, at least 2 of his medications should not be taken together. It is sad how hospitals have become corporate extensions that are more concerned with profit than upholding their hippocratic oath. read more

I called the pharmacy and they said she would have to make the change. 24 hours later: still in a pain assessment of about 9 I have not received my pain meds. Not an opiate user. If I could leave zero stars, I absolutely would. The labor and delivery team was incredible, and I can't thank them enough but the postpartum care was absolutely unacceptable. After nearly bleeding out during labor, I was transferred to a postpartum room and left completely unattended for over five hours before a nurse ever came in to check on me. During that time, I repeatedly called for help and asked for Tylenol because I cannot take Motrin due to it causing me headaches and was told "Motrin only." No one cared to even listen or provide an alternative. I also wasn't given any postpartum supplies, even after calling the nurses' station three separate times to request them. Nothing was ever brought to me. Then, to make things worse, the air conditioning in my room went out in August, and when I asked to be moved, I was told there were "no rooms available" and to pretty much just deal with it. When my assigned nurse finally came in, I politely asked for privacy to use the bathroom, and she slammed the door in frustration waking my newborn and my husband, who were both finally asleep after a long night. Completely unprofessional and unacceptable behavior, especially toward a mother recovering from a traumatic delivery. The lack of compassion, communication, and basic care in the postpartum unit is beyond disgraceful. No mother should have to experience such neglect during one of the most vulnerable times in her life. I hope no expecting mother picks to deliver here! please look into better alternatives when I tell people my experience here with the care I hear very similar stories with the postpartum unit. No mom deserves the treatment i received after birth. read more

I went to Desert Banner for surgery on Nov 21. I had a manipulation and hardware removed from my right leg. My surgeon had talked to the hospital staff about getting me Post op care. The case manager never discussed a discharge plan with me. The doctor ( Khan ? ) arbitrarily decided to send me to a homeless shelter. That sounded unsafe to me so I appealed the decision. The next day , both the case manager and doctor came in and told me I have to leave , because I was medically cleared and my insurance wouldn't pay for me to stay longer. This is an example of " Patient Dumping. ". I was trying to get a referral to Circle the City and the case manager didn't want to help me at all. He just gave me some resources on paper and that was it. I was fortunate a friend said I could go to their house til I could find a place to heal. My son was in a motorcycle accident (9/5/25) and when he was released, they all but shoved him out the door. Before his release, he needed to go to the bathroom and the nurses told me that they were busy with shift change and would get there when they could. SERIOUSLY?!?!? When he got up himself, they became furious with him. They were supposed to get me home health care, a skilled nurse, and a neuro rehabilitation appointment (brain bleed), and NOTHING was done (thanks Aubrey, Case Manager). Overall, the hospital was severely lacking in care quality and I wouldn't take my dog to them. The Trauma/ICU was really good, but the step down department (4th floor) are a bunch of heartless, un-sympathetic people I have ever had the misfortune to come across, who were too busy with their precious social hour to help the patients. read more

I brought my 4-year-old daughter to the ER after she had seven severe nosebleeds, each lasting 25-45 minutes. We had already been using a humidifier for weeks, so dryness wasn't the cause, and she wasn't picking her nose. She had bled through two full rolls of toilet paper, and I was very concerned given how much blood she had lost. The doctor (Thomas Winters) who saw us was in the room for less than two minutes. He didn't check her heart or lung sounds, didn't examine her nose, and refused to order labs, even though her blood pressure was low and heart rate were elevated for her age-- clear signs of stress and possible blood loss. When I voiced my concerns, his response was extremely dismissive. He came back into the room and said, "Not sure what you want me to do, I can cauterize the blood vessels if that makes you happy." As someone who works in healthcare and is currently in nursing school, I know what appropriate care and assessment look like -- and this was not it. He showed no compassion, no effort to investigate the cause, and no sense of urgency for a small child with significant, recurrent bleeding. To make matters worse, it felt like we were being brushed off because our insurance hadn't yet activated (it became active the next day and will backpay this visit). It genuinely seemed like he didn't want to spend time on a patient if payment wasn't guaranteed. This doctor should not be working with pediatric patients -- or anyone who requires thorough and compassionate care. The lack of concern and professionalism was unacceptable. read more

Went in for chest pains so they wanted to do blood tests so they put a IV in my left arm. The nurse Christian clearly was rushing and clearing inexperienced. Upon going back today and having to get an ultrasound done I find out they left me with DVT in my left arm as well as a deadly blood clot and was still released to go home even with them knowing . I work as a CNA and has to miss wages for 3 weeks or longer, and am in terrible pain! The staff acted like I did this to myself and told me it's because I have a clotting disorder that I've never been diagnosed with ! This is the worst hospital I've ever been in! Start off by saying that the staff is deeply caring, extraordinarily knowledgeable and extremely passionate IF you can find them. This hospital is severely understaffed and underfunded. Two cases: Mine, a TIA in July of 2023. Rushed via ambulance then whisked through triage and into evaluation with doctors and nurses swarming me. I was then tested with all types of medical devices then provided a diagnosis and treatment. Overall, excellent care. My wife, a September 2024 spinal fracture related to a fall. Went in at 9:30am and finally released at 2:30am the next day. Overall, frustrating and nerve wracking. read more

My husband came here for kidney stones. I ended up having to do almost 100% of his care. He had an IV that beeped nonstop and the nurse ignored it. He had an operation, no one was available to help him get cleaned up in advance or after at any point. I could not even get them to get me supplies for that. I had to find the towels,linens, new gown and supplies for washing myself. Time to get discharged and after 6 hours of waiting for the nurse to get around to discharging him, I had it out with them. The worst hospital service. Along with that by the front lobby, the visitor bathrooms are disgusting, garbage everywhere, completely unsanitary and no papertowels and the hand cleaner was empty! read more

I wanted to leave a review regarding my stay at this hospital. I was admitted for 6 days and during my stay the nurses were incredible. I wanted to leave a special shout out to my nurses Melisa and Erin! I was in the 5w wing and both of these nurses deserve a daisy reward. They went above and beyond to make sure I was as comfortable as possible and provided exceptional care! read more
