The menu was primarily seafood, also not a surprise. I decided to order a salad, not really in the mood for seafood. There was roast cauliflower, steak, chicken Parmesan, and various pizzas in addition to fishy dishes. The place was also packed, so I was glad we got an outside table. I thought my salad was delicious. It had fennel and Parmesan cheese shavings over the greens. I don't know what the greens were, but everything went well together and it was a generous portion. I had second thoughts about salad when I saw the amazingly presented entrees my dining companions had selected. After starting out with a beautiful Bloody Mary, my daughter-in-law had a crumbed dory burger with chips(fries in the States). It had two fish patties coated in herbed crumbs and she said she almost always ordered it, it was so good. It looked delicious but I stuck with my salad. My son had beer-battered flathead fish and chips. It was perfect with crunchy, lightly browned coating covering flakey white fish. I snagged a few of his fries which were also perfect. Prices in restaurants are always higher than in the U.S., but how likely are we to find fish like dory or flathead on the menu? Additionally, waitstaff in Australia are paid a living wage and don't rely on tips.

I ordered "The Melting Burger" and my wife ordered the chicken schnitzel. Now this place is advertised as a modern Australian restaurant, and an Australian burger is exactly what I got. Although I prefer the american style, The Melting Burger nailed all the aspects of a good Australian burger. The patty was well-done, wagyu beef, but not the central aspect of the burger. Most of the flavour came from the caramalised onion and tangy chipotle sauce which provided beautiful flavour contrast. The chicken schnitzel was also delicious. The exterior was beautifully crunchy and flavoursome with subtle herb and citrus flavours to compliment the relatively thick and succulent meat with a perfect texture contrast. I don't usually like coleslaw but the one accompanying this dish was great, crisp, fresh and not too heavy with a mild flavoured sauce. The chips were perfect. Not a single soggy or burnt chip. All were lightly salted and herbed with crunchy exteriors and soft, rich and moist interiors. No need for sauce! The real selling point for this meal was the price tag. Only $26 all up! I would rate this restaurant 4/5 if it had been a $40 meal because there was nothing novel or unique about the experience. However, perfecting classic dishes and making it affordable, one cannot argue with that. The only complaint I can make about this place is that their music was not consistent and quite confusing. They had not subscribed to Spotify and ads kept jolting you out of the culinary experience as well as the staff changing songs mid song. I am very keen to try the salmon and their pizzas. Will update soon.

The café occupies the corner of Garden st and Henderson Road and is industriously styled with cool marble and pink interior and a hanging garden. There's plenty of space inside and out, so I you won't be waiting long for a table. Serving Toby's estate coffee and a range of modern Australian dishes for both breakfast or lunch, as well as some sweet treats, is a popular café with the locals and visitors to the area alike. I've visited now on more than one occasion and the café is continuously striving to perfect their menu offerings. A group of us dined on this day to sample a number of the menu choices. The Grumpy's special of chili scrambled eggs were presented atop sourdough bread and a side of heirloom carrots, a heatlhy and wholesome meal. The winner of the day, and also one recommended to us was the Green Pea Smash with burrata and prosciutto. A great combination of flavours. From the sweets menu, we went for the Fig Brioche, topped with macadamia, honey, ricotta and vanilla ice cream (in place of the regular fairy floss). There were a few fruits topping it and would love to have a few more. The Grumpy's granola and pannacotta is also not only beautiful, but delicious and served with a raspberry pannacotta. Could be a sweet or breakfast ;) The venue also serves the famous cronuts (a mix of a doughnut and croissant, filled with a range of insides like cream, Nutella, caramel and topped with oreos etc. Surprise yourself. The guys at grumpy's are always friendly and hospitable. Make sure you pay them a visit.
