I was immediately impressed that my group of 6 could find a table on a Saturday night, so instant points there. Really amazing beer selection, as everyone says. The music selection is slightly jarring, they went literally from heavy metal in one song to Britney Spears in the next. Bathrooms are clean. Stopped in a quick beer while I was getting my truck tinted. Very extensive beer list. I order the Suarez Family Brewing Homespun. Amazing pour. As soon as I walked in, the AC was cranking, television showing the Olympics, the blues being played, two guys at the bar. Bar tender greeted me and poured me a glass of water and poured me the perfect beer. Both glasses were hand cleaned in front of me by this glass washer located on the bar. They have plenty of tap beer. All different beers with only Miller High Life, Budwiser, and Bud Lite. The rest if the menu has different choices. I like this place already. They do have can beers and bottled beer. Plenty of ciders. The most expensive beer is a 30 dollar stout aged in bourbon barrels. Free samples for those who need to. I went this afternoon for a beer and a shot. They aren't doing any favors for price -- the deal was $10 for a beer and a shot. It's a comfortable buzz, but it's not competitive with the rest of the bars in the area. There are dozens of bars in this area of Boerum Hill and Carroll Gardens, so if you want or need cheaper, you can always go across the street. They get points for the punk rock sound track. They had an all-women band covering Iggy Pop on the playlist, and a few others I didn't recognize. Their bartender was a punk with the haircut and tattoos, and she knew all of the lyrics. It's a comfortable bar, with lots of dark wood, and plenty of natural sunlight. The bar attracts all sorts of people in the neighborhood, and if you go alone, as I did, you won't be alienated or lonely. I had a long philosophy talk with a man from the Lower East Side, who had biked down for a drink. I felt really comfortable at this bar and I'm definitely, 100% going to go back. read more

In Manhattan I find that it's difficult to find places that are okay with having your dogs, let alone running around but Bar Great Harry lets you do just that. I have to give both the bar and the patrons props - we had a VERY LARGE DOG with us and he was just laying about by the entrance where we were sitting and several people tripped over him (for which we DO apologize) and everyone took it in stride. Great easy place to meet someone after you get off the subway. There are a ton of beers to choose from. Unfortunately I'm no beer connoisseur so the wide variety was left unappreciated. Instead I was able to focus on the atmosphere: the crowd is mixed (huge plus!), there is no "scene" but it isn't a seedy dive bar either. The bartender(s) are always nice, fast, and know their beers. Man, I don't know what it is, but I don't like this place. I've been here half a dozen times and every time It's either way too crowded or awkwardly empty, with no in-between. "Woohoo! As good as it gets" Truly appropriate for this place. Great happy hour specials--last night it was two pints of Yeungling for $5, incredible. When I later asked for a ginger ale and cranberry for the lady, that was on the house. Delicious and large beer selection. Attentive, quick, friendly bar service. Best part, of course, is the back room, nicely separate from the main and always full of three excellent condition pinball tables, three games for $2. Bar Great Harry has earned my love forever and ever. I recently had my 25th birthday in the backroom. It was a no brainer to have it there, the drinks were priced well, the atmosphere was very laid back but nice enough to be classy and everyone who worked there was just so so nice when I stopped in to look around. I had about 25- 30 people in the back and they all fit with room to move around and breathe. It's large, has 3 or 4 pinball machines, table and bar areas for drinks and good seating space. They let us bring cupcakes in and they even gave my drunken ass a free birthday beer. I may have bribed them with cupcakes but I was a few sheets to the wind so it's all a bit hazy now. Did I mention they didn't charge me to reserve the room? All in all, it was an amazing birthday in a seriously wonderful bar. They've just acquired a chunk of new patrons who love them and the adorable pups that visited that night. Nowhere in the city can you find such cheap beer at such a nice place. When it comes to having a good time with friends I try to look for places which are far and flung from the city. This place on the Smith Street is just right for good times. Where else will you get 2 beers for $5 during the happy hour. This is an awesome bar. Huge selection of craft beers, friendly knowledgeable bartenders, great happy hour specials, and pinball machines in the back. My friends and I are a competitive bunch and we spent a couple hours in the back room there. The bar definitely has a tattooed hipster vibe (it IS Brooklyn, after all), but don't let that scare you- it's a lot of fun and I didn't get so much as a judgmental look for wearing pastels. Great bar located on Smith in Carroll Gardens. Another bar I never would have visited if it hadn't been for the beer passport. I'd love to call it a dive bar (which I love) but it is just a small step above. If you are lucky enough to get a seat at the bar, you will most likely be surrounded by people that know their beer and look forward to talking with you about it. When I stopped in, I ended up next to Scott from Mission Delores (another great bar that was on the passport) and his wife. Great conversation between those two and the bartender. I've never had a bad time here. Great bartenders, great (and different) beers on tap, good company. It has a bit of a ski chalet feel to it, and this was only amplified by the night I spent here with my sister and we were essentially snowed in. Not a bad place to get stuck, if you ask me, and a regular even took up the task of shoveling the sidewalk in intervals. There's usually 15 or so beers on tap, and they're rarely anything I've ever heard of. If you want to experiment with some good beers for not a lot of money, head here. read more

BGH is an essential and quintessential local bar for me and my ilk. Great beers on tap, very friendly staff who know of what they pour, customers who are always more interesting than they ever are annoying. The music is always top notch here. The bar ipod makes the choices along with some great bartenders. Tables are set up in a way to bring a party of 2 or 10. Dark red walls, black trim. dim lighting, big wraparound bar in front of you and seats all around it. plywood floor. As for the patrons, they take the drink as serious as thier jobs and you will frequently see some working there. They are fully stocked with liquor and feature beers. More beers than (most of) you can rattle off the top of your head. So look at the chalkboard before asking the stupid question, do you have.....? It used to be BAR before GBH and it used to be something else before that (I honestly can't remember...that or I remember incorrectly, which might have something to do with the beer they serve here). I always have a good time at BGH. From their fabled trivia nights to just-plain-drinkin, it's a fun time. The environment is small, and almost claustrophobic but it works, oddly. In a way it reminded me of the Mos Eisley cantina (NERD TRAP IF YOU GOT THAT). The beer selection's incredible. They've got Abita Turbo Dog, one of my all-time favorites. One night I drank all of it. Anyway, there's the Sly Fox Prometheus that's quite delicious that was there last time I was. Great, friendly bartenders, more space than it seems, and a good environment. My friends took me here on a Friday night around 11 pm for a few beers. The place is kind of dark and divey. It was semi busy, first thing I noticed was a pug sitting with their owner. I walk farther in and see a labrador chilling next to their owner. We settle in the back area and I felt something shuffle around my feet. The lady next to us apologizes and then I see a black dog sniff my feet, I laugh and she tells me he's a black lab and only a few months old. I pet the dog and get to the bar, order myself a beer and bourbon. Place is chill, people and bartenders are nice, and obviously dog friendly. read more

I come here to drink and its really easy and affordable. Staff learns what you drink and makes recommendations when they update their stock. You can always get plenty of samples if you're in the mood to try something new. They have floor to ceiling windows and doors to open in the summer and there is great bar lighting when the candles are placed in the evenings. Terrible service from a bartender who was extremely condescending and rude. I have never been to bar where someone demanded that I pay before I get my drink as if I would skip out on the bill. So I've gone to Bar Great Harry a half dozen times now since the week it opened. It certainly trumps the bar that used to be in this space quite easily (i think that one was called just plain 'bar' or something). The beer selection is terrific and the owner takes pride in his or her choices. It's a small space so it can get crowded. One reviewer mentioned that the bartenders can be kind of cold and I second that notion. Overall not a bad choice on a slow night. read more
