Chama Mama serves Georgian food that is down to earth, yet a very polished vibe. The dining room has high ceilings and big windows. On an unusually warm day in March, they set up the classy outdoor seating. I asked the server for recommendations - the menu is great for sharing and trying lots of different dishes, but I didn't want to overwhelm myself with too many calories. She was a gem and suggested: Eggplant Pkhali - I really love this vegan dip of eggplant, walnuts, roasted onion, garlic, coriander, pomegranate molasses, cilantro and pomegranate. It comes with fresh bread, that is crunchy outside and pillowy soft inside. It's perfection, refreshing, toothsome, and vegan! Khinkali - beef and pork soup dumplings were well folded, savory, and soupy on the inside. Red currant mocktails - pretty and refreshing! They also have an extensive wine, beer, and cocktail menu. I have also been here for lunch and had a number of other dips and salads and loved what I got. Chama Mama is great for a date or friends. I believe they will rent out the full restaurant for events. I've only had Georgian cuisine at a different restaurant in Hell's Kitchen, so was curious to try Chama Mama. The menu sounded enticing and I'd recalled walking by previously and liking the aesthetic, so headed over for a late lunch one afternoon. At $29, the Taste of Georgia sounded grand--boasting an array of Georgian style veggies, smoked cheese and bread. In reality, it was a modest bowl packed with a scoop each of dip, two freshly baked fluffy rolls and a few shreds of smoked cheese. To my own fault, relying on limited experience with Georgian cuisine, I had somehow envisioned more of a cheeseboat as the bread and cheese surrounded by separate small dishes of vegetables (i.e. roasted beets, sautéed spinach, etc) so was a bit underwhelmed when a bowl with the likes of beet and spinach dips topped with two rolls arrived. While, I don't think the price reflects the dish, but rather is a reality of the current economy, the flavors were harmonious and I found the beet and mushroom to be the most enjoyable. Ordered the mushroom soup dumplings as well, which I found appropriately priced at $13. I appreciated that the server asked if I'd had them before then gave me a quick demo on how to eat them. It was a nice, hospitable touch. The dumplings were delicious with an incredibly thick dough, seasoned filling and cilantro heavy. I found them comforting (and sleep inducing). I ordered more bread for the remaining dip in the taste of Georgia. The second batch of bread was noticeably burnt, hard and not the fluffy, fresh kind I'd received with the initial dish. There was an additional $3 charge for this burnt batch which felt odd. All in all, I am still somewhat curious to try their other offerings and perhaps Georgian wine. But, if I do return it will be for the mushroom soup dumplings. read more

Chama Mama on Montague is a great experience and easily one of my favorite restaurants in all of Brooklyn. Everything about this place just hits, the food, the atmosphere, the drinks, and the service. It's an amazing spot for bigger groups because so many of the dishes are perfect for sharing. The whole menu feels communal, and it makes the experience feel really fun and connected. The space itself is beautiful too, warm, stylish, and just a genuinely lovely place to sit and enjoy a meal. The staff here is always so kind and attentive. You can tell they care about what they do, and it really adds to the overall experience. The drinks are also great, which is always a huge plus. I was able to walk in and get a table, but if you're planning to come during peak hours or later in the day, I definitely recommend making a reservation. This place gets busy, and for good reason. Chama Mama always hits the spot. I'd been a few times for brunch but this was my first time trying their dinner menu. Their beef pomegranate stew was incredible -- tender chunks of piece punctuated by tangy pomegranate arils, all served on a bed of the smoothest, cheesiest mashed potatoes. Really felt like a perfect representation of elevated comfort food. As always, their cheesy bread boat was a must-order -- cannot go wrong with freshly baked bread with cheese and butter. The menu online and the physical menu at the restaurant are slightly different so just pay extra attention if you have any dietary preferences! We were able to do all vegan except for the ice cream dessert...it was very hard to resist trying out the special flavor from Caffe Panna. I loved all the mushroom dishes and the soup was my absolute favorite! Was not used to the cornbread so will skip that in the future. Continuing our search for quality outdoor dining, we bring you Chama Mama, a lovely Georgian (Eastern European, not southern) restaurant in Brooklyn Heights. We love their wines (the wine flights are a great way to familiarize yourself with what they have to offer), but let's not ignore their cocktails! In their summer menu, we enjoyed their Lychee Margarita - slightly tart, flavorful and a large fresh lychee to give you a sweet burst at the end. The house Old Fashioned is well-balanced and an excellent sipping drink. We ordered the Kubdari puff pastry - delicate pastry chock full of delicious spiced beef and pork, served crispy smashed potatoes (or you can choose salad) - and kvari (cheese dumplings, served with homemade mint yogurt). We ended with their Honey Cake ice cream - a creamy ice cream filled with bits of their famous Honey Cake - amazing! We can also recommend highly their dumplings (your choice of fillings, panfried or steamed), any of their freshly baked breads and their lamb-stuffed grape leaves. They have a very good selection of veggie options so no one gets left out! Our server Gustavo was very helpful and got us taken care of quickly but we weren't rushed at all. Been to a couple of Georgian spots now. I didn't get a khachapuri, but their brunch pastries were light and crispy to perfection. The Pan Fried Kvari and Kubdari had delectable texture with a flavorful interior. The cheese in the Kvari wasn't over powering and the mint yogurt added a complementary sour complexion. The Kubdari reminds me of a Beef Wellington. The meat was gently salted and the salad was fresh and crunchy. Can't wait to try their dinner entrees. read more

WOWOWOWOW! I had never tried Georgian food, so we obviously tried a bunch of items. First of all - loved the grape martini! We started off with the dumplings and lobiani. The lobiani was good, albeit a bit boring compared to everything else we tried. We tried the mushroom and lamb dumplings and preferred the lamb for the overwhelming savory flavor. If you order nothing else definitely try the dumplings! For entrees we got the heritage pork shank and omgggg this was the best thing I've eaten all year. So salty and the meat fell off the bone. For sides I got the cheesy potatoes, which were delicious albeit quite heavy, and my friend tried the eggplant pkhali and loved it. Unfortunately I can't opine as I'm allergic to walnuts- but they were accommodating of my allergy and the waiter was very knowledgeable of what on the menu we should avoid (shoutout Nika!). This is the best Georgian restaurant I have been to so far. I don't think I've had a good impression as it heavily revolved around cheese, but this spot does it well and served other dishes that weren't cheese heavy. For drinks, we shared the Amber Wine Flight ($20), which were three different amber wine from Georgia. This was pretty interesting to try and I certainly don't hate it. Didn't even know Georgia produces their own wine. I also ordered the Mezcal Coma ($19) as I'm a huge mezcal fan. This one was made with lemon juice, rosehip tea, black currant, cinnamon syrup, mezcal, and aquafaba. Very tasty. We started off with the famous Georgian dumplings, Khinkali (3pc) with Beef and Pork ($12). If you didn't know, you grab the dumpling at the top, flip it over, and eat it from the bottom. I appreciate that they didn't put cheese in these dumplings like the other Georgian restaurants do. Everyone loves a good cheese boat, which has been blowing up on social media lately, so of course we got one, known as Adjaruli Khachapuri ($18). If you didn't know, it's a traditional open-faced khachapuri with blended cheese, topped with raw egg yolk and butter Orgo Rkatsiteli. Someone serving this will mix the egg yolk and butter in front of you while the cheese is still hot, creating a bit of a show for the table. This is absolutely delicious and will probably clog some arteries. We somehow managed to finish the entire thing as it was that good. A few other entrees you shouldn't sleep on includes the Lamb Chops ($45). This is a marinated lamb rack served with house tkemali, red onions and pomegranate. The lamb chop is prepared well and it just tastes soo good. Another dish you should get is the Half Chicken in Shqmeruli ($30). This is an oven roasted chicken in a garlic cream sauce topped with cilantro and pomegranate. I've had this at other restaurants and the chicken meat is dried out. They do a terrific job preparing the chicken where the meat is still moist. Soak that up in the garlic cream sauce and you got yourself one hell of a delicious bite. Of course we were gonna get dessert and the server highly recommended the Honey Cake ($12). This is a soft multilayer dulce de leche cake with honey drizzle on top. I did not expect this to be soo soft and fluffy while also being just a tad sweet, not overly sweet like you'd expect in a dulce de leche. There are a few locations in NYC. We did a group dinner in the Chelsea location and we've been to the BK Heights location 3x. There are a few items on the menu that sway us to bring our visiting family and friends here and they are the kinkali, adjaruli khachapuri and the imeruli khachapuri. It also helps that the BK heights location is spacious and beautiful. I think the mushroom kinkali is the best with the pork and beef very closely behind. I dare say the imeruli khachapuri is better than the adjaruli one. The crispy smashed potatoes are really good too. Since I've tried this 4x, besides the items I've listed, I have not found the other food on the menu to be good/special enough to draw me back. What may prevent us from coming to the BK heights location a fourth time was the recent poor and slow service on a weekday night. Our waitress was so busy that she couldn't take our order. One of us was left without a plate or silverware after clearing the table. We also had to flag someone down for more water. We started dinner at around 6pm. So disappointed with this place. Had it on my saved list and finally got to try it and what a disappointment it was. It almost made me mad :) The flavors are ok but all dishes are over salted and the price and portion are ridiculous. The appetizers were the size of small dips and the main the size of appetizers. Also the main dishes do not come with anything but the protein-no vegetable,bread or rice. I ordered the half chicken dish and the flavor was fine but very salty, burnt and so dry I couldn't eat the meatier part of the chicken. It was over 30$ and it was basically a quarter chicken not half with a few kernels of pomegranate and a bit of garlic sauce over it. Love Chama Mama! This was my first time at the Brooklyn location and the food is just as excellent with far less of a crowd! The ambience remains cozy and the front of the restaurant has huge windows - great lighting! We had the beef kebab - perfectly cooked and seasoned and the satsebeli sauce is the perfect accompaniment! We also had the machkatebi (cheese pancakes), adjaruli khachapuri, and boiled lamb khinkali (also perfectly cooked). On the side, we had the crispy smashed potatoes with tkemalili - the combination of perfectly crisped potatoes with the tartness of the tkemalili was a great pairing for the kebab! I also tried the the Georgia 1918 and fresh start mocktails - the first smooth and raspberry-ful and the second like a light mint lemonade. I haven't been to the other locations, but we bring out of towners to this location all the time. Not only is the restaurant beautiful, and conveniently located by the R, but the menu is extremely shareable, with options that delight most. Our go-to's begin with the Taste of Georgia starter, which is the perfect plate to whet the appetite, with a nice variety of veggie and non veggie options. We also really like the Chama mama salad for some additional freshness, which pairs well with the star of the show- adjaruli khachapuri, the famous cheese boat. We have also on occasion, opted for the seasonal khachapuri instead, but sometimes it just feels like an extremely cheesy pizza instead of more balanced. We also get the mushroom khinkali, which is not only fun to eat, but a really nice contrast in flavor profile. Next time I must try the stew, but we usually get the kebab, which is a bit more shareable. We are so glad Chama Mama is here in the neighborhood and we hope they stay forever! read more

This is one of the best Georgian restaurants I've ever been to! I visited from the West Coast and I've never been to a restaurant serving such authentic delicious food! The khinkali was the best thing I've ever had in a long time. The adjarian was absolutely delicious and the adjika was very different compared to the Armenian style one but very very good! This is our first time eating Georgian food and it was a great experience learning about new ingredients and culture. Everything was phenomenal, including service, decor, ambience, drinks but especially the food! The food is interesting, I feel like I learn something new about Georgian culture. There are extensive vegetarian options, as well as plenty of vegan and gluten-free. We went on a Saturday Eve fr quick bite without reservation but got seated right away(better take reservation as it was pretty busy, we just got lucky). We ordered few drinks(Ambe, Mezcal Coma and Chacha spicy Margarita) and Taste of Georgia ( Georgian mezze platter) and extra Freshy baked bread which came with a Adjika (spicy dipping sauce). Drinks were great except the spicy Margarita which was too strong ( probably due to Chacha which is a Georgian Vodka and too strong). Dips and freshly baked bread was amazing. Delicious cuisine typically found in southern Brooklyn in a gorgeous south Brooklyn setting. So many great Georgian restaurants in Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay, and Bath Beach. Chama Mama combines the stand out food you'd find in those areas with the upscale atmosphere expected in Brooklyn Heights. I started with a glass of house wine and my wife had one of their specialty cocktails. The wine was ultra dry. It had a super dark hue. It was a generous pour that lasted the whole dinner. Our first course was the Georgian salad. Thick cut cucumbers and tomatoes with cilantro, pomegranate seeds, and a generous amount of sunflower oil and vinegar. It reminded of the salads that my grandfather makes. A very comfy salad for me. Next came out the khinkali filled with beef and pork as well as the adjaruli khachapuri. Khinkali were huge, stuffed dumplings. Very doughy with a soupy and savory filling. Classic execution. The khachapuri was excellent too. Smaller bread bowl with plenty of cheese and butter giving it the highest cheese to bread ratio that I've encountered for a khachapuri. I liked the smaller portion as I didn't feel exhausted and stuffed as I usually do after adjaruli khachapuri. For the main course, we shared the roasted half chicken in shqmeruli. This might have been one of the best chicken dishes that I've had. Chicken was juicy with a crispy and wonderfully seasoned skin. The sauce was outstanding. It was a creamy garlic sauce that would go toe-to-toe with the best Alfredo or butter garlic sauces in the world. I highly recommended this dish and did not expect it to be the star. Had an early Saturday night reservation and arrived promptly. We were seated at a very tight banquette table right near the door and directly next to other diners though there were many empty seats. It was freezing cold that night and every time the door opened and closed we would get a blast of cold air and a very loud noise from the heater -- no exaggeration, it kept drowning out our conversation. The tables were packed very, very close together - kept hearing bits of conversation from nearby diners. Kind of like a Parisian bistro style. You're almost elbow to elbow with your neighbor. The biggest issue was that we ordered a range of items-- drinks, appetizers, soup and mains, and they brought them all out in rapid succession. We weren't finished with one course and the other one arrived. We weren't taking a particularly long time either. It became a joke -- they were trying to take our food away before we ate it. The food couldn't even all fit on our table. And of course, we felt terribly rushed, and it ruined the entire evening and any appreciation we would've had for the food because we did not have time to savor and enjoy it. We thought maybe they were trying to rush us out of there, but then we sat around for a long time and couldn't even get our check at the end of the evening. The food was pretty good and we enjoyed most of what we ordered, although the pate was almost like a sweet brunch item and was a little strange to my palate. We also ordered the taste of Georgia, the mushroom soup, the kebab and the megruli kharcho. The portion sizes were quite small for how they were priced - some even tapas-sized. The drinks were delicious, but also expensive. For the cost of the dinner, we would've expected a better atmosphere and much better service. It was fine but I'll echo what some other reviews said: the food was not super flavorful but quite salty, the portions were pretty meager for the price, and I don't like that the (expensive) mains didn't come with any sides. Got the Taste of Georgia to start but the pkhali (a sort of vegetable walnut paté) selection to bread ratio was very off so we had to order more bread. The string cheese jerky was the highlight. The side of bread we ordered also came with a very flavorful chili oil that was a hit with everyone at our table. The roasted wild mushrooms were also sooo yummy. This place is the newest location among all the Chama Mamas but is really one of their nicest, and I love that it's not far from me. Loves: + Yummy food. For my friend and I, we split: taste of Georgia ($28), khinkali ($12), and adjaruli khachapuri ($18). + Really attentive staff + Nice indoor and outdoor seating; indoor has warm lighting and can feel a bit loud, while outdoors has a bit of a European feel (bc those chairs) + Easy to get a reservation I've always had a positive experience at this chain and believe Chama Mama is truly a lovely addition to the neighborhood! :) read more
