The maple aioli is like nothing I've ever had before but the fundamentals of the burger are also done so well. Really cool vibe with great music as well as some solid beers available. Blame Canada burger: wagyu beef, poutine, maple bacon, maple aioli. "Why wouldn't all that maple make it pretty sweet?" said the voice inside my head. I really should listen to that voice more often, but there was a louder voice booming "BUT ITS CANADA LIKE YOU!!!" while playing the South Park song in the background. And that voice won. That voice always wins. I added on chips and 3 chicken wings for $6. Because when given the option to "add on" wings, you should always take it. That type of offering needs to be encouraged. And the wings were pretty good. No sauce (although I saw some bottles I could have grabbed), but nicely seasoned. More of a dry crumb than American style, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. Atmosphere is loud. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you wanted to hold a conversation with your date. Beer selection is a couple notches above average with some Stone & Wood mixed in with the Fat Yak. Bar Luca is worth checking out, but you don't need me to tell you that - you won't be able to resist being drawn in by the mouth watering smoke wafting out onto the street. read more

After hearing all the foodies out there proclaim that the Blame Canada is the saviour of all burger sins made by mankind, it was time for me to finally submit and join the religion. The place was packed out on a Tuesday night - it was a 30 minute wait for a table, but we were able to order drinks from the bar during the wait so at least we could line our bellies with alcohol. The burgers came out super quick and they looked beastly. The maple bacon and aioli had a good balance of salty and sweet, and the soft buns successfully held everything together. The poutine was the highlight - the fact that the fries stayed crispy after being doused in gravy and cheese sauce, that's some kind of magic. My one and only gripe was that the patty was overcooked. It was slightly dry and burnt on the sides, with no pink in sight. I guess it wasn't specified that the patty was be to cooked medium-rare on the menu, but I generally thought that was the standard across burger joints.. Just a little less time on the grill and I would've given it a 5! But, I'm determined to come back to I'll give it another go and I will pray that the Blame Canada will redeem itself. read more

This place is fantastic.. the signature burger "Blame Canada" is amazing, very tasty. Don't think I've ever had a burger with wagyu beef, smokey bacon, maple syrup and aoili all in one. This is the best burger I've had in Sydney to date, truly outstanding - succulent, filling and visually all going on. My associate had the chickpea and kumera burger. Not sure why you would do that when there are clearly some outstanding meat burgers on this menu, and he's not even vegetarian.. Anyways, despite whatever issues he's dealing with in his life at the moment, he said it was also an exceptional burger. Bar Luca has got a great city bar vibe with an excellent range of beers on tap to make the burger even better. With a killer burger, tap beer absolutely beats bottle or can beer hands down, so it's a very nice touch. "Blame Canada" is spot on with a Stone and Wood Pacific Ale. Bar Luca can get packed pretty easily due to popularity, so if you don't have a reservation best to get in early at lunch time. I would have given Bar Luca an easy 5 stars but the fries were a bit of a let down. They were shoestring fries but were just a little too thin and light. I reckon these burgers would be perfect with old school crinkle cut fries to soak up all the awesome maple syrup and aioli. The shoestring fries felt like more of an afterthought rather than a solid complement to a solid burger. Other than that, a great spot for a fantastic burger in a part of town you wouldn't expect. Burgers here are amazing!!! I had the Blame Canada with a side of fries. I probably didn't need the extra fries considering there were fries already in the burger. It was my first time tasting maple glazed bacon. Wow it was delicious. The Blame Canada was a very indulgent burger and I just want more of that tasty bacon. Decor of the restaurant is very hip and music maybe slightly loud for a business lunch. The Olympic swimming was also on in the background which was great. As far as I am aware, every burger lord in Sydney has taken a chair at this place on one night or another. This place is notorious for its burgers which are a homage to the American way: brioche bun, pickles, tomato sauce, yellow mustard, plastic cheese and no salad to see or hear of. We had the classic cheese, which if I'm being honest tasted like a Create Your Taste at McDo. I mean that in the best possible way. The special was a crispy chicken burger with tzatziki, and was basically a total hit. The scene here on a Friday night from 5:30pm is buzzing. People having drunk jovial conversations with colleagues, with some ordering burgers to dine in, or take away - presumably to enhale on the bus ride home so they feel somewhat sobered by the they get back to wifey. As I voyeuristically watched on sober from the dining area awaiting my companion, I couldn't help but want thirsty colleagues of my own to hang out with at this place. The reason I rated it a 3 star is because: They replace the ketchup in the Heinz bottle with their own made concoction, that was actually super gross, not even edible. This place had been on my radar for a while but really disappointed to say that it was one of the blandest burgers I've had! I always order something classic so I did not want to order the Blame the Canada. I got the BL beef instead (along with 2 other people in the group who ordered the same). There was LOTS of "aoili" but it was completely flavourless. I tried it on its own as well to test, and it wasn't even mayo. It was like a cream?! Wasn't a huge fan of the bready bun. 8.30 pm on a Friday in the CBD seems to be the time that bars would be absolutely hopping with young professionals out to celebrate the weekend and young not-so-professionals getting their drink on for the night ahead. So why is Bar Luca so quiet? When some friends and I pay a visit one Friday night, there's a large group of what appears to be tourists eating, a few out of towners who are clearly having a good time....and us. It's strange, given that every we've walked past to be here is going off! Regardless, we sit down at the bar tables, and get some drinks. At $7 for a tall vodka sunrise, it's feeling affordable. The food is also affordable, although I can't vouch for how it tastes. The venue itself is a little bit dated, and could probably do with a quick reno; the toilets are shared with another venue, and finding them is no mean feat, while the carpet and decor is a little bit dead. BLAME CANADA $15 + $3 FRIES This is the second time I have had the Blame Canada burger. The first time it was take-away and it was amazing that time but today eating it on a plate and straight out of the kitchen was even better. The first bite was love at first sight. It was an explosion of flavours: smokey meat juices and the intense maple sweetness perfectly balanced with aioli. Once you taste these flame-grilled patties, you can almost never go back to fried ones. That is, unless you can't stand smokey flavours. The meat was cooked medium rare, that made it tender and succulent. A single patty was the right ratio for me, the 200g Wagyu patty was already 50% thicker than similar burger joints. The poutine did give the burger more body and that comforting feeling of eating mash potatoes. The bread was the perfect consistency to just enough to hold the contents of the burger without being overly noticed. The shoe string fries were faultless, Bar Luca offers a wide variety of free sauces. I used my fries to scrape up the maple aioli that leaked on the plate. Yum! WAGYU BEEF BURGER $14 The Wagyu beef burger is a classic, that same smokey patty is served with perfectly melted American cheese and streaky bacon. If you're not a fan of poutine and the sweetness of maple, this is a great alternative to the Blame Canada. Conclusion Bar Luca is the best burger place in the Sydney CBD. Its signature burger the Blame Canada is known nationwide. It does get loud, it is a pub after all . The food came quick and they do take bookings for larger tables. I found it great value for the quality of the burgers, add-ons to burgers are extremely great value. Weekly specials are known to hit the spot and there seems to be no end to their creativity. Though quite a small place, this one is perfect for chillin and relaxing with friends on a weekend night. Customer service was good and the food was served promptly. Wow, what a popular place on a Wednesday night! So busy and luckily we booked a table a week in advance! The place got rather overcrowded and I felt like we were squeezed in! Finally checked out this place last Friday night at 6pm and it was packed and booked out so we had to wait 35 minutes before we got seated on a high table with bar stools next to other couples. My first thought was this place is way to loud. I could barely hear my friend and we were both uncomfortably screaming over the table repeating what did you say over and over. The music was loud and full on and the idea of eating a nice meal with loud music and people yelling didn't really sit well with me. I ordered a cheeseburger and shake. I must admit the food came out really quickly but my burger was really rare and my milkshake was just milk with sprinkles and cream nothing exciting or special. Maybe for after work drinks it's a buzzing place but Friday night for a nice meal and conversation it clearly isn't the right atmosphere for me. As for the food, it was fine but probably not worth the 35 min wait. Maybe worth checking out on a quieter night or during the day time.
