Black flies are not prevalent in the woods, but will attack once you get near the water. I learned this the hard way and they managed to chase me half a mile back to the car. There are some beautiful rock formations here and a good view of the Huron Islands to the east.

It is 1300 feet above sea level overlooking Lake Superior. Most tourists/visitors will hang out at West Bluff as sort of their reward to appreciate the surroundings hovering above Copper Harbor, MI. I was visiting back in the springtime of 2021 getting ready to take the Queen IV Ferry over to Isle Royale National Park. So...the day prior to my departure I was exploring around the sleepy town of Copper Harbor, Michigan and included this Brockway Mountain Drive as part of my activities. To arrive at the West Bluff Scenic View...you simply drive this 4-mile paved Brockway Mountain Drive until it can't go any further. And, the road begins just outside downtown Copper Harbor. While on the drive, I suggest first stopping at the Copper Harbor Overlook about 1/4 of a mile into the trek up the mountain. It can't be missed on the left hand side of the road and there'll be a scenic observation deck for you to admire the setting of the area. This overlook I believe is even better than the sceneries at West Bluff Scenic View. And between these two vista point spots, there's really no other landmark/attractions worthy of exiting your car for along the 4-mile road. Overall, the ambiance at West Bluff Scenic View was pleasant. I could envision how really picturesque the sights would be during autumn when the leaves start changing colors. In the end the landscape is good enough for hanging out 15 - 20 minutes and breathing in the fresh Upper Peninsula Michigan air. And Brockway Mountain Drive will take you about an hour or so to complete. It's short and simple.

More than a few times my husband and I just repeated "WOW WOW WOW" to each other as we drove through. At the peak you can get a really incredible, nearly 360 view of the area below and Lake Superior and in the fall the colors are spectacular. Especially on a sunny day. FYI it can get pretty windy up there! And since it's near the lake you'll get that lake effect wind and temperature so plan for a few degrees cooler than you would experience in town. And also make sure your hat, if you're wearing one, is tightly upon your noggin or you'll have to do like I did and chase it down when it blows off!

Two huge slides (maybe 60 ft and 100 ft long) and a huge wooden play scape with many smaller slides are near swings and a smaller child playset. When the kids get too hot, they can walk over to the beach. The water here was considerably warmer than in Munising the day before, but it is not clear to me why. This is one of the top playgrounds in Michigan a d probably one of my favorites of all time. It is surrounded by sand as well.

Yes, it is expensive, but the 45-60 minute flight is much quicker than the 3-6 hr ferry options. Check in was quite smooth. You park in the lot, and give them your car keys (I guess in case they need to move your car? It's also $8/day for parking). Your luggage gets weighed as there's a 45 lb limit per passenger (and no individual bag can weigh more than 45 lb). Thankfully they don't weigh the passengers, instead they just eyeball you and might tell you if you need to sit in a certain seat to balance the plane. The whole process was a breeze. The flight out was very smooth, while the flight back was a bit rough. It was raining pretty hard with a chance of thunderstorms, but as the weather improved, my flight wasn't delayed. There was a screen at the outside of the Rock Harbor visitor center with updates, but you can also ask the NPS ranger who has more detailed information too. The company tries their best to make sure you aren't delayed, including adding extra flights if there's a backlog. If you have the cash, definitely splurge on the seaplane as you get a cool view of the island, and you have the chance to sit in the co-pilot seat too!

I submitted my first request to their website on May 7th, they responded May 12th that "On 7/6 the latest available flight is 1pm." even though 1pm isn't an option in the dropdown, so I replied on May 16th that yes okay I'll book that time, again on May 21st, and then May 26th asking what to do. They replied "please resubmit. We discarded your request because you didn't respond from 5/12 to 5/16." ARE YOU KIDDING ME. That is so unhelpful. So I sent a screenshot showing how that isn't an option on the form and what time to select instead when I resubmit, and he replied "It's not in the menu but is one that we provide most days. Let us know if you want it." Like obviously I want it??? I've told you 3 times I want it??? So I resubmitted May 30th with the new incorrect time since both the times I wanted weren't listed, and didn't hear back until June 18th: "The requested flights are sold out." Well in the meantime I had to schedule the rest of my trip so I scheduled the Voyageur II boat from one part of the island to another, which now I cannot take, and because they took so long to reply I'm outside the cancellation window and have to eat the late cancellation costs. I called them and there is nothing they can do. They provided alternative options which is the inverse trip of what I wanted, which would require me to change my vacation dates and I still wouldn't make the boat that I have booked so I would have to eat that cancellation cost either way. They've sabotaged my entire trip that I've spent months meticulously planning out. Now if I want to go I have to rework my entire itinerary with only a week left to plan this, and hope that other routes to the island are available. Either way, I will not get to see the island as much as I had wanted, and I will have to eat the costs of the boat I reserved, all because of Jon and Kirsten at IsleRoyaleSeaplanes. I called the Voyageur company as well to explore alternative options, and they said they are not surprised to hear about my experience, and have seen this happen before. It is very well known that Isle Royale Seaplanes has horrible customer service and cancels on customers outside of weather reasons.

The managers Jayne and Robin are the reason I rate this at a 4-they are wonderful. I always found them to be attentive and truly love the place. The location is great-beautiful views but is on the main highway going up to Houghton. The units-they could truly be amazing, the bedrooms are large and bathrooms are nice but everything needs an update. I hope the owners find this very special place worthy of an update. Thank you Jayne and Robin for taking such great care and making me feel welcomed in the UP!

Waterstone Suites 10/8/17 - 10/11/17…read more Could have been a really great place to stay. Let's start with the 4 dozen fly bodies we cleaned up on our arrival. Then we killed another 18 or so. There was even a dead fly in one of the beds. When we spoke with the contact for the property they offered us alternate accommodation in the unit below, but when they open the door that unit smelled like garbage and dirty diapers, also gross. Everyday saw a fresh new supply of dead flies even though this was a fall visit. There unit itself was nice with a very nice view, gas fireplace, very deep garage to use (can fit two suvs in lengthwise no problem, (opening was a bit narrow). There is a full size washer and dryer if you were there for a week. Location was good being right near Baraga and at the bottom of the Keweenaw Penninsula. It was sparsely appointed: no extra pillows, blankets (one on each bed, cheap foam ones), no hangers in the closets and for an extended stay no dresser to put clothes into. We asked for more toilet paper on the morning after our arrival to be questioned on how much TP we had used. What? The bathroom attached to the MBR had a bit left on the roll to begin with. Each couple was given 1 more roll. (Use the single ply sparingly). Kitchen was sparsely appointed, not much silverware, no small glasses, mismatched wine glasses, no paper towels or extra garbage bags. Our garbage was not taken out during our multi night stay. Water was very restricted in the shower, but the faucet in the kitchen was difficult to get turned off. Couldn't get a good shower to save your soul! The shower off the MBR is very small. You can barely wash yourself without hitting the walls. Dispensers for shampoo, conditioner, body wash were empty. We had four adults staying in the unit. There were 4 bath & hand towels and 4 washcloths. When we asked for extras we were informed that there weren't any extras and that was why there a washer and dryer in the unit. Doing laundry is not high on the priority list when you are on vacation. We were told it wasn't the Four Seasons. Obviously the manager/owners were not only lacking in towels, but in good customer service. If you want a separate towel for your hair you're out of luck unless you bring your own. Porch off living room was dirty, lots of dead flies on the threshold of the door. Furniture needed a good wash off. Windows in the door to the porch were very dirty. LR only has seating for 3, 1 large sofa, no extra chair for a 4th person. Some parts of the blinds in LR were not working properly. The blinds were very hard to pull over. TVs were all old. The wall-mounted TVs in the BRs presented a safety risk for our heads. They were hanging out from the wall at just the right height to hit your head on, which happened on 2 occasions. On the outside the building looked tired, not as nice as in the picture. Much of the woodwork especially on the porches was worn and in need of painting. We were first told that our contacts had acquired the property within the last couple years. Then we were told that our contacts for the property worked for a management company and they couldn't get them to do anything to make it nicer. We would have been happy to write to them. When we asked the name of the company we were told that they couldn't remember the name. Strange when you would be dealing with them all the time for over 2 years. Very odd. There is road noise from US 41. Fortunately the BRs were on the back of the buildings. For $160 per night our expectations were a little higher We got by, but our stay could have been so much more enjoyable.

Friend says he has beer in the car meaning he can have one when we left, and the owner was eaves dropping on the conversation and chimed in saying he can't drink beer on his property unless he buys it from the course. Geez guy nobody is drinking their own beers on your property. Sorry if you're butt hurt we aren't buying your overpriced beer to take on the road with us. What an ass. And to think we were going to sit down and buy this a-holes overpriced food. Will not be back.
