Apparently there is no enforcement of quiet hours. Many campers were loud well into the night. The facilities itself were clean.

This Waterfront Park really embodies what the town of Houghton, Michigan is all about…read more Houghton, Michigan (in my opinion) is a pretty cozy/old fashioned/industrial city with this terrific Waterfront Park situated along the edge of Portage Lake within the Keweenaw Waterway. The main highlight is a pedestrian walking pathway, where all you have to do is stroll about and breathe in the fresh air of the UP - Upper Peninsula. Plus, another scenic aspect of the park is having the Portage Lake Lift Bridge as the centerpiece focal point, making for quality photo opportunities (especially when the sun is out, lol) for those visitors exploring around town. And...the Portage Lake Lift Bridge connects the cities of Houghton and Hancock, which the road eventually leads towards Copper Harbor, MI - "The Gateway to Isle Royale National Park". For me coming to Houghton on my eventual journey out to Isle Royale...I very much enjoyed becoming acquainted with the city. Btw, there is an Isle Royale Visitor Center right nearby here for those interested in purchasing souvenirs, watching a park film and having your NP Passport stamped. Overall, this Waterfront Park gave me a fresh perspective for appreciating what makes Houghton quite the charming town. I used about 1 hour just casually hanging out here, taking some time to sit down on one of the many benches to relax and people watch.

(First one on Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands, Wisconsin). I tripped over Ontonagon Township Park while reading a separate review of a Porcupine Mountain State Park. So, only downside, day-of-arrival reservation only. Call (no email) by 7AM and make your claim (906 884 2930). I did. It was a weekday in late June. A site was set aside for me. I wasn't thrilled with the site assigned. Together with the site operator we hopped in his golf cart and I got a complete tour of available sites. By the way, $15/night for the site I chose. On the matter of the day of arrival reservation, you might call in advance and get a sense of the level of campsite fill. It's not a guarantee but it might provide some guidance. I was tent camping generally looking for a modest amount of solitude and not hanging with the party-lights and generator RV crowd. Pleased to note that even with that constraint I had some choice. Without question, the sites directly on Lake Superior are great locations. Many are RV sites but there are a few tent-only or tent-likely sites. But strong north winds and temps down to 45 at night told me this was not the place for me. I chose a location (site 74) across the road from the lake and slightly up an incline. The strong winds diminished to a gentle breeze and the moderate temps made bugs a non-issue. I had power, which I really didn't need, but nevertheless. And water spigots were at some sites. Not mine but nearby. The vault toilet nearby was spotless. The modern restroom with coin-op showers was a short walk away. The mercury vapor street lamp lighting the access road was a little annoying and I think they could have provided a similar amount of safety without the lumens. But now I'm just picking nits. OTP was just a one night stand. Next day I back tracked 12 miles west along a lake-hugging road to the Porkies for some trail hiking and then back again through Ontonagon and up the Peninsula. By the way, for the highway freaks, Ontonagon is the head end of US Route 45 that continues south to the Gulf of Mexico. Road trip for another time.

The infrastructure is crumbling, the rates keep skyrocketing, and the staff actively harasses paying guests, completely ruining what should have been a peaceful family weekend. The campground is in a severe state of disrepair. Management continuously raises prices while letting the property rot. The playground features broken equipment with sharp, exposed screws, the kids' pool is broken, and the main pool has flaking paint. The bathrooms are consistently filthy, the grounds are overgrown with tall grass, the picnic tables are rotting, and ants are completely swarming all over the campsites. The biggest issue is the toxic behavior of the manager, Linda L, and her staff. They routinely lie, invent fake rules, and use outright intimidation tactics against guests. Linda previously altered our month-long reservation to strip away our discount, lied about email records, and gave away our site. She also stalks campsites by doing slow drive-by stares in her golf cart. Our final straw occurred during Father's Day weekend, and the way the staff treated our children and my brother-in-law was absolutely unacceptable. My brother-in-law, a single dad recovering from health issues, was simply standing on the pool deck fully clothed to monitor his young daughters while they swam. A worker aggressively cornered him, demanding an extra $10 fee just to stand there and watch his kids. When we tried to clarify the situation, the employee completely lost her temper, screamed across the property that she "makes the rules," and physically charged at me. My brother-in-law was forced to pull his heartbroken, crying daughters out of the pool to leave.Immediately after, Linda L stormed in and escalated the hostility by targeting the remaining kids. She started screaming at my 4-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter to get out of the pool, shutting down the entire facility 30 minutes early just to punish our family.Linda fabricated a claim that Michigan law requires a credit card charge for pool liability--a lie later refuted when I checked consumer protection details through the State of Michigan. To get the last word, she called the Ishpeming Police to trespass us and falsely claimed I was drunk. I blew a 0.0 on the breathalyzer, and the officers were incredibly polite, but our weekend was completely ruined by their malice. The trauma from this place is real. Linda terrified my 9-year-old daughter so badly that she still panics, shakes, and tries to hide if she accidentally spots Linda out in public. The permanent snowbirds are gone, the sites are empty, and the current staff treats consumers like criminals. If you dare to question a messed-up bill, a dirty facility, or advocate for your children, you will be screamed at and thrown out. Save your family the heartbreak, protect your peace of mind, and camp anywhere else.

It warmed up in the afternoon but was nice a cool for sleeping. We stayed with another couple on our site and it was a tight squeeze. The sites here are very small so keep that in mind if you are traveling with a large group. In order to get a spot right on the lake you have to book 6 months in advance and it is totally worth it. You can hear the waves crashing onto the beach from your tent and it is well worth booking a trip so far in advance. We stayed in spot #1 for a four day trip. It was a short walk down to the beach where we watch the sunrise every morning. The bathrooms were nice and well cleaned. There is a camp sponsor who stays a month at a time on the campground to help organize events. My only complaint is the fire pits didn't have grates or anything for you to cook over so that meant becoming buddy-buddy with our neighbor to borrow supplies. The hiking was amazing. There were plenty of good trails within a 20 min drive of the area. We had such a good time exploring the area. I will stay that the trails are extremely muddy after a good rain but after two days they dry out pretty well. We didn't explore any of the restaurants but there are several within 30 mins drive. Overall I can't wait till we can go back to this campground and I would highly recommend this mountain range to anyone in the Midwest.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!…read more After making a reservation, I sent the following email to Silver Sands: Dear Silver Sands RV Park Team, I hope you're doing well. I'm writing to ask for your help with a reservation we made for July 16-21, 2026. Yesterday I received the results of an [redacted], and unfortunately, my [redacted] surgeon has told me that I need [redacted] surgery, with an expected recovery time of 6-12 months. That means all of our camping plans for this summer will have to be canceled. I retired from local church ministry last year and live exclusively on our Social Security income. We had just purchased our first brand-new travel trailer--a [redacted]--and were so excited about this trip. Instead, it will be sitting in storage while I recover. I completely understand that cancellations can create challenges for your business, and I know you have policies for a reason. I'm simply asking if you might consider making an exception and refunding our reservation. It would be an enormous blessing to us during an unexpected and difficult season. If a full refund isn't possible, I would be deeply grateful for any partial refund or credit that you could offer. Thank you for taking the time to read my request and for considering it. Regardless of your decision, I appreciate your kindness and understanding. With gratitude THEIR RESPONSE: "For the RV Park, we do not do refunds, as stated in the email & on the website. We can, however reschedule your reservation for another date, as long as we are not booked. If you would like to reschedule, that would be no problem. Just let us know the dates." MY REPLY: I understand. I was simply hoping you might make an exception given my unexpected rotator cuff injury and the financial impact it has created for us. It's disappointing, but I appreciate your response.
