Unsanitary. Barbers were not disinfecting their clippers, guards, combs, or brushes in between customers. Not sure what the laws and regs are up here in Virginia but I'm pretty sure they are supposed to use new razor blades for each customer. Not, just let the used blade sit in barber-side for a few minutes till the next customer got it. read more

I have an undercut and came here just to get that freshened up. The place was quite crowded on a Saturday but the wait wasn't too bad. It took the guy I spoke with a second explanation for me to communicate I wasn't looking to get all of my hair cut, but once I conveyed that I was next in line and he did a nice job of buzzing the undercut and keeping a clean line with the rest of my hair (which can often be a challenge). Often when I've gone in to hair cuttery or a similar place to just get my undercut cleaned up they don't do a nice job of cleaning up the part where the undercut meets the rest of my hair. But this guy did! I would definitely come here again. read more

I've been back twice since my visit in December and Jason has been my barber these past two times. I cannot give him enough praise! I gave him an idea of what I was looking for and he knew exactly what to do. After he shaped up my hair and gave me a fade like I'd never had before. To top the experience off he gave me a hot shave that included a warm towel beforehand, a shoulder and neck massage and some moisturizer to make sure I wouldn't shave any dry skin. I don't understand the negative reviews here at all. Everyone I've sent here loves it and keeps coming back. Ken is always there and if you don't like something you can just tell Ken and he will fix it. The prices are great and the service is outstanding... Hot towels, straight razors, hot shave cream, the whole smash! I almost always get the same haircut but my son changes his every time and has never been disappointed. On the day before Thanksgiving, I went with both my sons and we got shaves and haircuts. It was a great experience and I plan to make it an annual tradition. read more

This is by far the best men's haircut experience I have ever had. I've tried everything from high dollar salons and am a regular at three different barber shops around the Charlottesville area. I'm pretty sure Ken cut my hair and since I had an important meeting I decided to get a shave, too. The shave was amazing. It seemed like the techniques being used were out of this world. It was like nothing I've ever received before. I touched my face the rest of the day, and probably the entire time I was in my meeting. He is the master of the straight razor. I moved to C'Ville last year and have been looking around for a different barber than the one I've been using. The cuts have been "okay," but nothing that I really like, I guess coming from Miami...its a bit harder to find a really good barber. However, I did find this place today and thought I would give them a try. As you can see from my review - I HAVE FINALLY FOUND MY PLACE! I stopped in about 45 minutes before they closed and no one was waiting, so they took me right away. I think John helped me out. I showed him a quick picture of how I like my hair and he went to it. New to Charlottesville and needed a haircut because I just started a new job. I know exactly what I want and I know the lingo because I'm no stranger to barbershops. I explained I needed weight taken out and keep most of the length while trimming the dead ends and tapering the sides and back. No line ups, hard parts, or edge work. I specifically noted that most barbers who I see for the first time cut my hair shorter than I would like it and that I probably needed no more than 1/2 inch off. The barber got to work and immediately started cutting off a lot more than I wanted. Then when I told him that was shorter than I wanted on one side he acted as if he was done and going to let me walk out of the door completely uneven. I basically had to coach him through the rest of the haircut to avoid looking like a total mess, including swatting hands away when he tried to do my edges. I don't believe my barber actually spoke English very well because he and his coworker were speaking to each other in a foreign language when they could tell I was dissatisfied. When the barber tried to style my hair at the end I had to ask multiple times to do it myself with the comb I always keep in my pocket. To top things off they only accept cash so I had to use the ATM in front of the store. Would absolutely not recommend. read more

This was the worst haircut I've ever gotten. I went to this place right before the first day of school and my barber COMPLETELY ignored the instructions that I gave him and cut all of my hair off. As a result of this haircut I had to wear a hat for the first 2 months of school and experienced bullying because of how bad my haircut was. I am never going back here again, I don't even understand how someone who's supposed to be a trained professional can do such a horrible job. read more

I'm done with this place. I've had about 7 or 8 haircuts here, and only once did I leave happy. Every other time, I've had to ask the barber to fix his sloppy work. There are about 5 barbers here, but just one who is semi-competent; the rest are terrible. It's a shame, too, because they offer some nice touches, like a straight razor shave of the back of your neck followed by a wipe-down with a hot towel. I wanted to like this place, because it's close to where I live, the price is right ($12), and it's a real barber shop; but the quality of their work is just too poor. Although some of the older barbers seemed pretty good, this guy (Jack) had no clue how to cut hair, let alone use a razor. Not even someone with no prior experience would succeed in blotching a normal head of hair so badly. Worst haircut of my life. Had to visit another barber right after just to fix it. I desperately needed a haircut and I didn't want to go to the generic haircut places like supercuts or the over priced sports clips. I saw this place on the side of the road and I took a chance, I mean hair grows back eventually. I went in and the guys were extremely welcoming and nice. I told the guy what I wanted and he went to work. He was very meticulous but you could tell he was doing it to perfection. After the haircut instead of just buzzing the extra hair off of your neck he took a straight razor to it. I was impressed. The only qualm I have is the haircut being $12 I'm just not used to paying that for a haircut. However for the craft, precision and experience I would recommended this place and go again. read more

I am very particular about my barber. I moved to DC from California and was sad to leave my hometown barber. Rightfully so cuts in DC are expensive AF. I have family I visit once in a while in Charlottesville and I've been to this barber twice now. This place has given me cuts better than alny in DC for half as much. I plan on making this a regular trip for family and hair. Might give you an idea as to how particular I am. The 5 star due to the atmosphere I enjoy a good conversation with my cut. read more

Great barber shop. My barber in a different barbershop had retired due to old age. I have been looking for a new good barber. Found him in this shop. His name is Jack. Very detailed and thorough. Dont expect a good haircut. I asked for my regular cut, which is pretty simple. "Jason" proceeded to buzz my head twice as short as I asked for. Worst experience ever, first of all the barber doesn't speak English to understand how I wanted my hair cut , secondly , they totally ruined my hair, I asked them to tidy my beard, ended up trimming it all, they don't know how to use a shaver where he accidentally cut through my Mustache and after I told me about it he was not able to fix it other than shaving it all off. The hot towel they used on my face smells really bad, the razor they used on me was a used one. Horrible Horrible experience that I will never do again read more

Excellent barber shop. When I went there were 5 people working, so the wait times aren't bad at all. You tell them what you want and away they go; no small talk, which I like. They even threw in a straight razor shave around my neck for no extra charge. I can't recommend Barber House enough. read more

Great place. Only got a shave because I just moved to the area, couldn't find my razor and needed to be shaved for work. David did a great job. Took a bit of time but afterwards my face felt really smooth. Had the World Cup on the tv but tv wasn't working Greta. Can't beat the prices. This place earns a 1 in my book. Please read with the knowledge I've only been once so the other barbers may be amazing. I asked the guy who cut my hair if he could use a straight razor to trim my beard and also line my forehead, sideburns, and give me a nice line on the sides. He said yes, though I'm not 100% sure he understood what I was saying as English was his second language. Either way, the dude wrecked me. He only went over the top of my head once, leaving behind some hair to be longer than the other. The line he gave me wasn't very visible as he didn't give me a very good fade. Now, the big reason I give a 1 is he done cut the shit out of my neck! I'm talking Edward Scissor hands on my throat before Edward knew what be was doing with them ice sculptures. Omg. Had a date that night too and I canceled because it looked like I had leprosy or something. Ruined my damn night but I used to work in the service industry so I still tipped the man. read more

Now my favorite over Chung's and Belmont barbers. This is the only barber with which my kids have been consistently happy. I have found them consistently friendly and skilled. It is not the mad rush factory of Chung's. I am relatively straightforward, and several different barbers have done a good job. I have observed them take the extra time and be sufficiently skilled to meet special requests of other customers. read more
