I was in desperate need of a haircut and was recommended to go here by my father. I just needed a few inches trimmed off the bottom, no layers or anything fancy. I was seated pretty quickly, but my hairstylist, Lora, immediately started trying to convince me to change my style. I was informed that "girls should have long hair" and that my preferred haircut was going to be "too short" to look pretty. I wasn't asking for anything crazy, just for my hair to be trimmed to a little bit under my ears. I eventually convinced her that it was my hair and what I wanted. She started cutting my hair and I was turned away from the mirror. I was not offered any way to see what was going on during the cut. When she finished, I saw that she had not honored my request and had cut only a little bit off the front of my hair and the back of my hair was the same length. I asked her to trim it again and reminded her of my initial request. She trimmed off a little bit more but not as much as I wanted. She also overcharged me - the front board advertised it as being $20 for a women's cut but she charged me $24. I didn't want to hassle with them anymore and left. It has been several days and I am finding lots of chunks of hair that were cut unevenly - too long or too short. I had asked for a straight line. read more

I have been going to Chung's Barber Shop since 2016 for my First Year at UVA and it's the only haircutter I'll patronize in Charlottesville. It felt like seeing an old friend again now that I'm back for my Master's. For $15 I got a great, straightforward men's haircut, they straightened up my sideburns, and gave me the most relaxing hair washing I've ever had, which is generally something I hate having done at a barber. I think those who complain are asking too much. Again, it's a $15 haircut in a strip mall, not some boutique, you get what you should expect. This place is superb. There's always someone available so you're not left waiting, and they are quick with their work (admittedly I get a buzz cut every time, hard to take long with that). Before visiting this barbershop, I was advised on where to go. I waited in front for approximately 20 minutes before a Barber was available. A few things I observed that I did not care for was the lack of cleanliness throughout the shop. Hair was beginning to build around the Barber's work areas, leading to into the walkway. They were not cleaning the chairs or clippers before and after cuts. I would rate my actual haircut a six out of 10. I got a low fade to the skin. However, there are a couple of lines that are easily identifiable and will have to grow out. I guess you truly get what you pay for. I like to give some time before writing reviews for places. I've been going to Chung's for about 5 years now. I have never had a bad experience and believe almost all of the barbers have given me a haircut at this point. Without a doubt, Sunny and David are probably my favorite (you'll see these names mentioned often in other reviews as well)... Over the past year I've started primarily going to Sunny at this point, but honestly you can get a haircut from anyone here and you'll receive a quality experience. What I love: I love that you can walk in and almost always immediately be served without having to wait (unless you want to wait on a specific barber)... I will add that I tend to go first thing in the morning so it is often not very busy at this time; I can't speak to how busy it might be later in the day. I love the price of the haircut (and wash), currently I think it is $15. For the quality of haircut you receive, you can't beat this price. What is OK: having to pay cash is a thing, but honestly several barbers in previous locations (Baltimore and NOVA) handled cash only so this wasn't the first time I've encountered this. They have an ATM inside which makes it easy to get cash if you need... basically all my cash becomes "haircut money" in our house now. The location is also somewhat tricky to get to if you are coming down 29 from the North... you have to make a u-turn at Rio from 29 and... it is a minor inconvenience. What is bad: nothing. Nothing is bad. Go to Chung's! I came to Charlottesville and was used to paying 24-30$ for a mens haircut and thought this is what you had to pay to receive a quality cut (no offense Haircuttery/other chain-type haircut places)... I was finding myself more and more disappointed at the location I was going to previously and was recommended Chung's by a coworker... Good haircuts at good prices for Charlottesville. I have been mostly satisfied with the haircuts from Chung's. The problems I have had are related to communication errors between me and the barber, but those mistakes are always corrected promptly. Also, haircuts have always been fast here for me. Two things to know before you go: this establishment is cash only (but they have an ATM inside) and they orient the chairs so you are unable to see yourself in the mirror while the barber cuts your hair (but the barber does swivel you around to inspect their handiwork at each stage of the haircut). Chung's is a solid barbershop. There are some barbers that are significantly better than others (I've had good luck with Jackie) and some that are significantly worse. It can be pretty hit or miss. Things worth knowing: 1. It's cash only (but there's an atm inside) 2. There's a ticket dispenser right when you walk in the door. Grab a number on your way in (if it's not busy they won't use it. I missed it on my first visit). 3. If you have a barber you like you can say you want to wait and let your number pass by (but give a few different people a shot). 4. Haircuts for men are only $14! 5. Hair washing is included (all the barbers seem to have their own timeline on where this falls in your haircut though). I absolutely love this place! My son has been going to get his haircut here for 2 years and everyone at the shop is sooo patient with him since he can be sensitive about towels around his neck to stop the hair. They respect what he says and always find a way to make him smile! I especially find the gentlemen who work there amazing with him! (They even sneak him a lollipop or two during the cuts!) Today we had a fabulous time! The man cutting his hair made him laugh throughout the cut by styling his hair silly and showing him a flop of white gel on his head ( he thought it looked like bird poop) to keep him entertained! While living in Charlottesville, I've been to this location numerous times over the course of many years. I've had my hair cut by almost all of the barbers that work here and I've had both good and bad experiences. After some of the bad ones, I would swear never to come again, only to eventually come crawling back after running out of other options in the Charlottesville area. Fortunately, it was all worth it in the end after I met Linda! Linda is one of the best barbers that I have ever had in my life. She takes great care to listen to what I want before she starts cutting and it has never turned out badly! I would recommend Linda to any one of my friends, no hesitation. Without Linda, my review for this place would definitely be no higher than a three-star, which would primarily be for the other barbers' ability to handle very simple cuts, the price, and the speed. Chungs is easily my favorite barbershop in town and prolly my fav in the country. I'm a no frills haircut guy and Chungs has awesome value with terrific service. They employ a large number of barbers who are all great (shout out to Jenny who is my fav) and each have their own dedicated customers who will come back later or wait for their barber of choice. For the price of a reg hair cut you get a complimentary shampoo (with complimentary facial and neck massage!!). No matter how simple the cut, Chungs will take special care to get all those little stray hairs. The straight razor behind ears and neck are delicate and precise. I often get little touch ups on my eyebrows and ears (eek sorry I'm getting older) at no extra expense. Every hair cut has been perfect. Been here twice and was satisfied both times. If you're looking for a cheap, fast cut, Chung's is your place! $14 for men, $20 for women (not including tip). It's usually pretty busy. You have to get a number and wait to be called for your turn, but there are many barbers around so the wait is never long. Location is also convenient and parking is easy, lots of spaces in the lot. The barber who cut my hair the first time was fantastic and styled my hair exactly they way I wanted it. The barber who cut my hair the second time was alright. He was friendly but wasn't the best listener. I ended with bangs longer than I wanted. Hubs got a haircut here on the first day of snow in C'ville for the winter - it was open, despite so many of the other businesses in Albermale Square being closed, so we had to give them props for that! The service was fast and very inexpensive - I waited in the waiting area and was kept company by a huge pile of 'Cooking Light' magazines - and though hubs' hair ended up getting cut a little shorter than he had asked, it looked good and the barber had a very keen eye for detail and precision.
