I'd like to thank Mr.Lee and family (esp.Winter) for an amazing experience. I walked in and the shop is clean, the waiting chairs are Very Comfy, the barber seats are gilt and styled from the last century (1800s, that is). The lighting is directly out of dressing area of a movie set. Mr. Lee's whole family, all working together, add to the pleasant atmosphere. I went to Winter's chair: good looking sumo wrestler type. It was clear no one had ever cut my hair type before (I look Ethiopian, complete with the ringlet hair). Winter worked on my hair like Bernini worked on his statues - literally strand by strand, and got the job done - Nicely. Lee takes his time to do it right. I've never given a review on Yelp but with how great of a job Lee did, I felt it was my duty. Lee takes his time and ask you a lot of questions to make sure you get the best haircut. Not only does Lee do an A+ job of cutting hair, his prices are standard with the market. I believe it was $35 for beard and haircut. I'm very skeptical of reading reviews, but even these (nor mine) do the quality of Lee's Barbershop justice. In 33 years, Lee is the only person to provide a haircut I am beyond satisfied with. He was very quick, but in parallel, he was efficient, precise, and gentle. Going into it, I was nervous and I didn't have much faith. Lee sat me in the chair and asked me what I wanted, I told him short on the sides/back and leave the top longer, and I could tell he knew exactly what to do. I have a fairly lengthy beard as well and needed a shape-up (tapered). Again, he knew exactly what to do. He used several different types of clippers, straight razors, scissors, and probably more that I missed. Also, the infamous hot towel wrapper was nothing more than cathartic. It was very spa like. This is the type of barber who will cut one single rouge hair with scissors. My hair and beard have never looked better in my entire life. If I could give more than 5 stars, I definitely would. I'm going back and labeling myself as a regular for as long as I live Charlottesville. He's legendary. read more

After my review, there have been two messages from the owner. Yelp has not allowed me to respond to either. I went to this shop because I had heard that Lee is a good barber. I wear my hair in a '50s style with the sides 2-3 inches long and combed up and back with about 2-3 inches on top. I told the barber to cut nothing off the sides but to outline the ears and back, and to taper the sideburns. The first thing he did was buzz off all the hair on the sides--a 4-5-month loss. Either his English was so bad that he did not comprehend my instructions, or he did not care. Either way, it was a HORRIBLE haircut and experience. The owner's response was for me to return for him to cut my hair more. He apparently also does not comprehend the problem. The last thing I need is more hair cutting. I cannot recommend this shop--or, at least, I cannot recommend the barber who butchered my hair. read more

I went in because of a recommendation from my friend. I heard it was a good barbershop. I scheduled an appointment at three, and I came in at 2:55 and was immediately seated, which was great. I showed the hairstyle that I wanted to my barber who I believe was not Lee. I had long curly hair on top and the size was a little long. I also had a beard with not the longest hair but long enough where it was considered a beard. I asked only for a haircut to make the top a little short shorter and the side shorter. He did a great job of cutting the sides, but then he started to shave my beard, which I did not ask for nor wanted. He then also began cutting my hair shorter than I wanted. He got to a point where he was stylizing my beard. I thought it was OK where he had it, but I think there was miscommunication where he then kept shaving until I had a goatee. I was not a huge fan of it and I asked if he could shave it off. He nodded and then proceeded to do other stuff with my hair, which I thought was fine because we were going to get everything else done. After I asked him again he nodded again, and then five minutes later he took off everything and went up to the register and waiting for me to come up and pay. He was a very nice guy and I think there was an English barrier but I went in with a beard and curly hair and left with a goatee and very short hair. I would be willing to try again, but possibly would like a different person. Once again all the people they were super sweet but they kinda did the exact opposite of what I wanted. read more
