I have written 5 star reviews for the Barber Shack in the past, ever since they changed venue, it has gone down hill. Last Friday, my husband brought my son in for a haircut and color. My son got his hair cut by Talon, who did an AMAZING JOB!! (My husband also got a cut by another barber, has been going there for years and this time looked terrible, he went to fix it elsewhere) Then, for a separate price, he went to get his hair colored. I didn't catch the name of the man who did the dye job, but he works in the back room. Now let me just say, I have been having my hair done for 20 years, when I walked into the room, the dye was PAINTED AROUND my son's hairline. I asked the "professional" he said, "oh, it will come off in a few days". Ok, my son was happy, I can deal with that. After his hair was washed and blow dried, we were told to wait two days to wash his hair, then wash it in the kitchen sink with cool water. Now my son has Stop Light red hair, and goes to bed and sweats. His pillow, blanket and shirt are now stained from the dye. The next morning, he sits on the couch, my white couch and blue throw pillow are now stained with the dye. On the second day, I had my son take a shower and told him not to wet his hair too much. But he did. And it stained my shower walls, and floor. The dye also ran down my son's face and body, leaving him stained. Then the towel, the drips on the bathroom floor, the carpet, and the handprint where he got out of the shower. I ended up washing my son's hair that day, and again the next to make sure the dye was actually out of his hair. I asked my stylist and she said that the only way this can happen is if the barber didn't rinse my son's hair properly, and used really REALLY crappy dye. The worst part of this is that he charged $75... SEVENTY FIVE DOLLARS for a kid with a little fuzz on top of his head (1/2 inch on top and faded down) plus I gave him a tip. This is ridiculous. If you want to get your hair done, don't do it here. read more

This place has serious scheduling issues. All 3 times I have been here I have been given a wait time estimate that is more than an hour off. While waiting I have had people who signed in earlier and missed their appointment allowed to go before me when I have already been waiting over 90 minutes. On the flip side, today I decided to schedule my sons appointment to avoid the unreasonable wait. On the way to the Shack I got caught in the Ski to Sea Parade and called ahead to tell them I would be 5 minutes late. When I arrive, my appointment got bumped. Barber Shack, you have wasted to much of my valuable time and I will never be back. I hope this review helps save someone else's time. Jeff read more

My haircut is important and Ed does a fantastic job as a barber and carries Reuzel products which is Hollands finest pomade - hard to find. I'm really happy with their customer service and online booking system because my time is valuable. They're very professional, well organized as well as clean and sanitary shop. They are very welcoming and down to earth, I usually have Ed cut my hair, he's very friendly and I feel as though he listens to my hair cut requests. My son loves to get his haircut here. They do a great job with his hair, and on a few other males I know. With this being said, I was nervous going for a female haircut. They had offered the federal workers affected by the shutdown free haircuts which was amazing if them, so I decided to give them a try for my hair. So glad I did! Kristy (I may have spelled her name wrong) did an amazing job! I have been happy with it every day! Sometimes I get my hair cut and it looks amazing in the salon, but then I get home, and the following days can never get it to look good again. This was not the case here. Scheduled an appointment for 2:15 so I can get a haircut on my lunch. Sat around for 20 minutes and there was no sense of urgency or customer service. Very Poor service. Don't schedule appointments if you can't be timely on them. Not good business. read more

My son and I both got haircuts at the Barber Shack a few weeks ago and we will never be going back. Jared (the owner) cut my hair, and the biggest issue was he straight-up did it wrong. I said I like my hair shorter on the sides and longer on top, so I can keep it messy. He did a #4 trimmer on the top before I noticed. Thats not really "messy"... thats much shorter. But I couldn't do anything at that point. And then he started trimming my beard without asking me. What, dude? That is definitely not ok. If you want a generic high and tight, this is the place to go. Practically all the guys walking out of there had the same haircut. But be wary if you want a different haircut and make sure they show you what they're about to do before they start. read more

Been going to previous incarnations of this shop (usta be the tiny 2-chair place on Maplewood) for decades. The current place is larger, visible and funky, with more chairs and services (serving the current explosive variety of men's styles, details and expectations). Prices are reasonable with various daily or customer discounts and specials. I'm pretty basic: "Leave some on top, up one side and down the other." Well, today I got one of my best haircuts ever -- just what I wanted. A real pro was efficient, while attending to all meaningful details. Overall, I was in and out in 1-hour. As for schedule, wait times can vary. Now-days it's unpredictable how randomly customers will show up or exactly how long each customer will require. Enforcing schedules and reservations are problems that should not be at the expense of individuals who have waited their time. I don't want to be rushed out, just because a crowd arrives after me or individuals want long complex cuts. read more

Beth did such a bad job on my bangs I had to go home and fix them myself :( totally lopsided. The first time I went in for a haircut with her I was satisfied, she took her time. This time it was extremely rushed and felt as if she didn't care at all. Pretty disappointing when a hair dresser can't even cut bangs straight across. I'll never go back. read more

This was our first time coming here, I brought my son in for a kid's cut. We received no greeting upon entering--and then had a 45 minute wait before being called on. The haircut was unflattering, we were charged for an "adult" cut and most importantly, no acknowledgement or courtesy was made in regards to our wait time. Sometimes a simple "thanks for waiting" is all it takes to make a client feel seen and appreciated. Overall, I was disappointed. I was hoping to find a regular place to go as we are new to town. This is, in my opinion, the best place to get your haircut in Whatcom County. I heard about this place through a friend who took their young son there and he got a very stylish cut. I normally just go to the nearest Mastercuts, Great Clips, etc... When I'm not giving myself a buzz cut at home. My cousin was getting married so I figured I should go get chopped. When I pulled up to the little red shack with the barber pole out front and the door wide open, I was struck by how small the building is. The entire building is about 15 by 15. When I entered there was a man and woman cutting hair at the two barber chairs. There was a tv on the wall playing HGTV and a bunch of cool sports memorabilia scattered throughout. When it was my turn the woman asked if I had been there before because they keep a notecard for each customer and their cut preference. She spent 40 minutes meticulously trimming and shaping my hair, finishing it with hot foam and a straight razor on my neck and around my sideburns which they do for everyone, no extra charge. I was amazed when she told me the total would be $12! I felt like I was ripping them off. I loved the haircut. The 2nd time I went in I got Matty and he hooked it up as well. Plus, he indulged me with his Game of Thrones theories. Bonus! Plus he is gay so you know he can cut some damn hair! Anyways, I'll definitely be going back there and I would recommend it to all my family and friends. read more

Talon is great! This place is hip and friendly and gives some Uh-mazing hair cuts for cheap! And it's not just for men! I'm a girl with short hair, but there were a couple girls who got hair cuts with longer hair while I was there too. I also love that it's walk-in only, because with my hectic schedule it's much easier to walk in than having to schedule an appointment. They're doing it right! read more

I took my 12 year old daughter in for a haircut at 4pm on a Wednesday. No wait and friendly staff. Beth took her back. I showed her 3 pictures of the cut my daughter wanted from various angles and then explained how we wanted to keep the length on top with just a trim on the ends and do a shave/ fade on the sides... Beth said no problem and got to cutting. I went to the waiting area. After about 10 minutes I checked on things and she had cut ALL of her hair on top down to less than 2 inches. All of the pictures I showed her had the hair length on top going past the eyebrow and to the middle of the ear. She then said that the pics I showed her reflected the cut she had given to which I showed her the pics again. She then said 'oops, sorry'... absolutely horrible. I reassured my daughter she looked beautiful because she does regardless of her hair but this was the worst haircut/experience ever. read more

Really really long wait- Saturday of New Year's Weekend, so this probably explains a lot. Put my son's name on the list and was told it would be an hour wait. We took the dog for a 45 min walk, got cash & coffee, then came back 55 min after initially checking in and still had to wait 45 min to be called. Staff's children were all over the place, trying but failing to hang out patiently while their parents worked. Witnessed at least 3 rounds of teary kid meltdowns while we waited. Haircut was as son requested, so no complaints there. Staff was friendly. Fine if you enjoy chaos, sobbing children, and have 2 hours to waste waiting around at the barber shop. May be a weird day here, but probably won't be back. read more

I will start of this review by acknowledging that the establishment is very well maintained and inviting, and that my experience was very personal and may not be alike to anybody else's. The atmosphere when I walked in was great, fun building, fun employees, fun music. However, the purpose of a barbershop is to give the customer a haircut that looks good. That is not what I got. I had asked my stylist not to cut my hair too short, or to undercut my hair, but unfortunately, she did. My hair looks atrocious; as soon as I arrived home my family ridiculed me and said I looked ridiculous. I looked in the mirror and realized they were right. I sat staring at myself in the mirror for hours, trying to make this terrible haircut look good. Because of my awful haircut my peers and classmates are making fun of me, and self-esteem has dropped quite a bit. I can honestly say this is the worst haircut I've ever had, and trust me I've had terrible haircuts in years past. It's really a shame because I did like the atmosphere and my barber was a good person, just not a great barber whatsoever. Hopefully nobody ever has to go through what I've had to go through. Perhaps it was because of the barber, perhaps it was because of the day, perhaps it was because I wasn't specific enough when I said, "make my hair look good, just don't cut it too short," regardless, not a great experience. read more
