Great quality haircuts. Hot lather and razor cut around the edges. The head barber checks every cut before you are done. The barber shop was started by a military veteran many years ago and while he has passed away, his German widow, Renate, and daughter, Deanna, have continued to be a part in service to the community. I have personally witnessed that if a homeless person comes in, they provide a bag of cup o soup, some snacks, and a cup of hot coffee. I know the homeless are respected as human beings, and are grateful for the respite and a small bite to eat. read more

I really like how all workers wore masks except for a few who had masks under noses. The lady who did my hair had her mask underneath her nose instead of covering her nose. I had my hair thinned, cut, and straightened. The lady did a great job but it took her 2 hours and 5 minutes to get the job done. She did communicate with me about my hair. The people of the establishment are nice and soft spoken. I went in for a simple recut for an undercut as it grew too long for my liking. It's great that they took me in right away. Unfortunately, after the cut I took my hair out of the bun and a clump of hair came out into my hands. I ran my fingers through my hair and out came more hair to my disbelief. I have been coming to Wally's since 2014 when I retired to Bellingham full time and Wally was still alive and has his own chair near the door. The atmosphere of the shop has always been down to earth, nothing glitzy but focused on delivering a quality cut. While my cut are a basic #1 it still requires a fundamental barber shop skill not found at multiple other franchise shops around town. I really wanted the like this place. As I waited, everyone's haircuts looked great so it seemed like it would go well. I went in for a head shave, I even called ahead of time to see if they had room. The whole experience took 2 hours. If it's a two hour wait, that is something that should be communicated from the get go. The lady who cut my hair was very nice but my scalp burned the whole time. I didn't say anything because honestly I just wanted to get this done with and leave. She asked multiple times if my head felt ok, and clearly knew she was not doing a great job. After I left and was able to actually inspect my head I found lots of uneven spots that were not shaved correctly and my scalp was knicked in many spots. While this place my give good cuts, do not come here for a shave. Save the $30 and do it yourself in a fraction of the time. *edit* upon further review my wife found that they cut a mole on my neck. It was still bleeding hours after this shaving. I can't believe I paid money for this. read more

Wallys is super old school, actually run by a great older guy named Wally and his wife. He has been cutting hair for 30ish years I think. They really excel at great men's haircuts and colorful banter. There hasn't been a time that I've gone in where there hasn't been a great conversation and local gossip to go along with your haircut. Prices are super reasonable, I think a basic cut is 18, and they offer pretty much everything. I'd definitely ask for Dianna, she is amazing if your looking for something fancier, Wally or any of the others will take great care of any other cuts you have. My barber recently moved away, so I tried this place. I'd been here a few years back and Wally himself gave me a great clipper cut, high and tight, but he has since passed on. First, the haircut. I feel like if you have a barber pole in the window, everyone in the joint should be proficient with clippers. Never heard of a high and tight that involved scissors, unless you come in with a caveman's mane. You know what... It turns out there's a reason for that! Do you remember the movie Smokin Aces? I looked like Hugo. Now you may think that's the epitome of style, but I'll tell you it's not a high and tight. Suffice to say, I was wearing a ball cap for a few weeks. Now the venue. The place has character. It LOOKS like a legit barber shop. Comfy waiting area, decent selection of reading material, free popcorn, and an interesting collection of challenge coins (further reinforcing the deception that you might get get a good high and tight here). But one of the barbers, I think she's the head barber since she "inspected", then "fixed" and "passed" my cut, is quite a character. I sort of felt I was on the set of Jerry Springer as she threw a massive tantrum over a parking ticket. I mean I get it. Everyone hates parking tickets. But grownups don't run around in public ranting and raving and threatening to visit violence on parking cops, let alone in a place of business, while waving sharp scissors and standing behind and out of sight of the poor sap in the barbers chair. To preface, Wally's is hands down the best place in Bellingham for a men's cut, fade, and anything else. That being said.. today was the 3rd time in 3 months I've spent up to (and over today) an hour waiting for a cut. I've called and tried to book a reservation only to be told to come on in and as long as your there before 5, you'll get a cut. I put 1hour and 40 minutes in the parking meter in anticipation of the wait. After an hour, I figured I was up next, as I was the last one standing of the original group from when I arrived. Unfortunately, a guy that came in 50 minutes after I did was seated next. Maybe he found a way to get an appointment, but I don't know. At the end of the day I left 1 hour and 10 minutes after arriving, with no haircut. I love the atmosphere. I love the quality. But I feel like my time is wasted by waiting and waiting only to leave empty handed. I think from here on I'll have to find a new place to get my cuts, unless I can either get an appointment or be allowed to bill the shop for the time I take off of work to treat myself to a nice cut. read more

It was sent as a private message, but to give you a better sense of what kind of business this is/ how they respond to customer complaints, here it is: "I'm sorry about the lady that Cut your hair, but you have it completely wrong about the Shop being a right wing shop. We welcome and do a lot of the LGBT Community. I've had a meeting with all of my Barbers about personal opinions. As for my haircut, I know it was done right. I give everyone a large hand mirror to look at the haircut before they get out of the chair, if it was bad, why wasn't something said then. And I know the cut was faded, as I always turn the chair and check the cut three times before letting the customer out of the chair. It sounds to me you have a chip on your shoulder." My response: "I appreciate you responding to me and informing me that you've taken steps to discourage your barbers from discussing personal opinions with patrons. However, I do not accept your non-apology apology. This was my experience: a barber asked me where I was from and what brought me to Bellingham, I responded NY and that I moved because my boyfriend got a job here. Given that is all she knew about me, her immediate, lengthy, and unprovoked diatribe against newcomers and liberals demonstrated hostility. As a gay person, I've learned that when someone becomes agitated and immediately wants to tell you how right-wing they are after learning you're LGBT+, its smart and safe to get away from that situation and warn others. That is why I felt the need to write a review. As far as my partner's awful haircut goes, I don't know what to tell you. After a quick glance in the mirror, it seemed OK enough. When outside, we noticed that half of his head was faded, the other was not, and he had several long stray hairs in the widow's peak zone that were not part of his hairline. He wanted to go back and have it addressed, but I told him how hostile my barber was, so he decided against it. Do you want business from the LGBT community? I'll tell you how not to get it: tell a customer who was mistreated by one of your barbers that they must "have a chip on their shoulder". Fantastic cut. I've only been to a barber on one or two other occasions in my life, primarily salons and I've had a friend cutting my hair for the last several years. I went to Wallys on the recommendation of a friend (who has the cleanest cut I've ever seen - imagine a 21sr century Leonitis) and couldn't have been more pleased. Honestly, I wish I wouldn't have waited to so long! Super clean cut, fit my head and style perfectly, straight edge shave of the neck and hairline... it was stellar. Wally's barbershop is a delightful little barbershop run by Wally and his family. There are 7 chairs and you can make an appointment, or just walk in. It's a true barbershop, not a salon, so the cuts are straightforward, and the facial hair work excellent. One of the interesting aspects is that they do a lot of training of barbers, and every cut is inspected by either Wally or his daughter Deanna. They always have some kinds of snacks, like candy and popcorn, and good coffee. They also have glad from all over the world for sale, and a lot of other items. Wally also have a display case with a huge collection of challenge coins. It is a family affair, and you can feel it. I would recommend Wally's to any man needing a haircut. read more

This review is way overdue, since this happened a while ago. Still relevant nonetheless. So I go into Wally's and sit down taking in the nice atmosphere. The barbers seemed friendly. Nothing to complain about. My turn comes up and I hop onto the chair. I tell my barber I want a fade, 3.5 overall with a taper to a 1. Not too complicated, right? So she does her thing. At the end of it, she turns me around. I got a freaking BUZZ. Let me repeat myself. I asked for a fade. I got a FREAKING BUZZ. 0/10, will never go there again read more

Wally has given my son the perfect Caesar Cut every 3 weeks for the last 3 years. It's not the least expensive place in town, but one of the very best. When Wally is unavailable, his daughter Sarah or Sean (another barber on the premises) have also cut his hair and I would highly recommend them as well. My boyfriends' hairdresser was on vacation for an extended period and he went to Wally's for the first time last week. He said Sarah gave him, "The best haircut he's had in Bellingham in 10 years." Great haircut and a warm, family atmosphere. Love the feel of the place as it has a nice old world charm. My hairdresser, Gaye Marie was friendly, pleasant and obviously knew what she was doing unlike other shops I've been to in Bellingham. Complementary neck shave topped it all off. Only complaint was that I had made an appointment and was in the chair a half hour late, but the freestyle snowboarding on the TV kept me entertained enough. read more

Best old-school barbershop in Bellingham. Colorful, fun barbers for the most part. I like the straight-razor clean-up shave at the end as well as the out-from-the-wall vacuum and the shoulder massage. Alford is hilarious and Wally will tell you his life story (it's a good one) in five minutes. The only downside is that the wait is sometimes long. read more

Just got my haircut there and I definitely won't be going back. I brought in a photo of myself with short hair and asked for it to be cut like that. What proceeds is about 35 minutes of the back of my neck and ears being shaved. The top of my head is left almost completely as is. I ask for it shorter, and they take off -maybe- 2 mm more of hair. I'm now left with an awkward half haircut that I'm going to need to go have fixed elsewhere. I would say the prices are good, but considering 20 dollars got me a half-cut I can only assume a full cut costs 40, which is pricey if you ask me. Unless you're getting a buzz I'd avoid this place like the plague, and considering how many times I had the shaver painfully jabbed into my neck, I'd probably still avoid it for that kind of cut as well. read more
