Once they moved, it seems as if some of the charm had left---along with the guarantee that the food would be perfect. I have had some absolutely amazing food here. But, lately, it's been passable. I tried the burrito today. Not a burrito guy but wanted something different. It was standard burrito fair. Some beans. Some rice. Some meat. Some sauce. It was good. But it was a burrito. Not hard to do an okay burrito. The tostada is where I was hoping for the usual greatness of this restaurant. I took a bite. The tostada seemed slightly overcooked. That's okay. I can deal with it. It slightly altered the taste, but okay. The rest of it was pretty tasty. Until....bad carnitas. I mean...bad carnitas. One bite was 100% fat. I know they saw it when they put it on. Some like that, I don't. And then...some bites that were not chewable - or digestible. Then another bad bite. Tostados are not too big. So there are only so many bites. This one made me never want to try carnitas there again. It's too bad. The people there are always nice. The food used to be great. Now. Not so much.

The largest glaring problem with this restaurant is the price point. Unbelievably expensive. It has the price point of high end establishment but the quality just does not match what you get. It almost feels like they had to jack up the prices to cover the costs of the decor in this place. I would go again but quite honestly I don't know if I'd be willing to pay that price twice. So excited to finally have gotten to try Barbie's finally. My fiance and I shared the beef, chicken, and pork tacos, the bowl (my favorite, and you can add protein for an additional few bucks) and he also had a burrito (massive btw). I could eat that bowl everyday with a bag of her tortilla strips and salsa. So good and a really nice level of heat. This first experience, he picked up and brought home for us to eat. Barbie's is SO affordable and delicious, plus Barbie is probably one of the coolest people in Cville. Get the $6 Chopped Bowl, it's a ton of delicious food with built in chips and salsa. I thought it would be amazing and it was! The guac tostada with a chicken taco was extremely filling. Barbie warned me that the tostada would be enough. LOL Very affordable, quaint, fresh. There's reserved parking spots for those driving that are located in the alley behind the restaurant itself. I'd recommend this space as a spot for casual dining and if you need a quick bite after a long train ride (like mine!).
