It's hard for me to grade this on a proper scale. First the great. The restaurant is truly stunning and you tell a lot of thought went into every little detail of the place. It has an extreme upscale Mexican feel which for me is new. Truly stunning pieces of decoration. The drinks are creative and the "vessels" they're served in are truly unique. I saw one table that got shot delivered in an airplane. The service here was good. Not incredibly great. The man who helped us was attentive and tried his best to serve us. But felt like there was quite a bit of pressure on him to get the orders right. And things that would seem simple became more complex. I feel as though the menu should help guide the customer a bit more on how to place orders. For example margaritas are listed but doesn't tell you that you need to select size, rocks, slush, rim type, and fruit selection. It was just overall confusing and could be felt by our waiter. The food is good. On par with much of its competitors in the area. It tastes fresh and feels like they have a bevy of quality options. The largest glaring problem with this restaurant is the price point. Unbelievably expensive. It has the price point of high end establishment but the quality just does not match what you get. It almost feels like they had to jack up the prices to cover the costs of the decor in this place. I would go again but quite honestly I don't know if I'd be willing to pay that price twice. The ambiance of this location is very upscale. Total upgrade from the last location. I had the Arroz con Pollo- which was very good. So good I forgot to snag a picture. The guac was very fresh in flavor. The mango margarita humongous I could not finish it! Our waiter was very kind and patient with us and our order. They gave great recommendations. This was my first time at Plaza Azteca and it was a pretty disappointing experience. The service is good and the decor is interesting but the food just doesn't measure up. The chips tasted like they came out of a bag from the grocery store and the salsa has very little flavor. I had the Pollo Tropi which is chicken with shrimp and pineapple. The chicken was dry and overcooked and the shrimp was flavorless. The rice and beans were also dry and not very hot like they've been sitting out for a while. I had a draft beer with it and that wasn't even very cold, closer to room temperature. The whole meal was just mediocre. I didn't finish it and definitely did not take home any leftovers! read more

My daughter and I decided to try Plaza Azteca at its new location a few months ago and we were expecting the same quality of food but were very disappointed. While the decor was nice it did not fit the space, we not only felt like a sardine in our booth the waiters were stepping all over each other and bumping into the tables/booths. Our waiter was nice but did not know the menu or how to answer our questions. I was not surprised when we drove by today and saw that they had changed the name of the restaurant. Unless they have also changed their prices (way overpriced) and worked out some kinks from when first opening at new location we will not be going back. read more

This place has salsa that tastes like it just came straight out of a jar at local grocery store. Their tacos lacked flavor so I asked for the hot sauce which it never arrived. I would not recommend this place because you can buy ingredients at your local grocery store and it would taste much better than what this place is offering. read more

To begin, the inside of the restaurant is decorated nicely but seems a little small. Maybe because there's so much going on. Went for the first time on Cinco de Mayo with friends. For starters, we were seated and did not see a waiter/waitress for a good 10 minutes. A random waitress stopped by and asked if we had been helped and then brought us waters and chips before telling us that our waitress would be with us shortly. It took another waitress to see we only had waters and a low basket of chips before we finally seen our waitress. To be safe we ordered drinks and food all at once. I ordered the Arroz Con Pollo. I asked for them to hold the chicken and add shrimp. Received my meal and it was basically a salad. After being told by the waitress they only put veggies in the dish during "morning" we found that a little confusing. Manager came over, we first asked if he knew what the dish was .. he didn't at first. Once he figured it out he acted as if he didn't see what was wrong. We told him we didn't want the dish and instead of apologizing or offering something different, he snatched the plate and walked away. He then proceeded to come back and chastise our waitress for "substituting" the meal. Mind you, the menu shows that you are able to add shrimp to your dish so there as no substitutions. Aldo I believe was the managers name, was extremely rude to us and his employee. But I guess you're paying for the elaborate decor and ambience. I gave it a four star because the food was good. The new location of this chain is beautiful, if very crowded. The oversized furniture meant that I was repeatedly bumped into by the waiter delivering food to the table behind me. The food is slightly better than your average Mexican, but at close to twice the price. The price for margaritas is also steep ($17.99 for a "tropical" one), as were the prices for guacamole and churros. Service was somewhat slow and desultory: my water was never refilled, for example. Now that we've checked it out, we'll go back to other local favorites. read more

We had been waiting to try the new Plaza Azteca in Charlottesville. My wife raved about the one she had known in Tennessee. We went about 4 pm today. (Easter) The service was adequate, but the meal was the worst I have ever had. I am 77, and that is saying a lot. We shared a shrimp, chicken and beef fajita. To say the green chilis were abundant was an understatement. The chicken and four shrimp were ok, but had little flavor with three small tortilla wraps. The beef on the other hand was stringy, tough, and overcooked. The rice and refried beans were flavorful, but a small helping. I do not normally complain, but this was beyond bad! This was our first time here. They have only been open for 3 months. Our food was AMAZING!! We ordered fresh guacamole and they made it at the table. Excellent! Steak and chicken Empanadas--so good. My daughter had the quesa birria and loved it. Hubby had spinach enchiladas. All our meals were large portions and could easily have been shared. The service was great! Really wanted to like this restaurant but things didn't turn out so well. Before the food review, the restaurant is beautiful. Major renovation with huge tables, booths and bar. Lots of colorful decorations as well. Looked promising.. Table for 4 was tight but made it work. The service was, well, the server was so eager to get the orders right that he seems a bit flustered. Still, he was very nice.. Now for the food, severely lacking.. Tamal (or Tamale) was nothing more than a wad of Masa with some small bits of chicken inside and it was barely room temperature.. Chili Relleno was overstuffed with cheese which, for some is great but it was too much. Birria Tacos were a flop! The shredded beef was good but the tacos were terribly greasy. And they were served on a thin piece of slate meaning the Birria was able to roll off the slate and onto the table. Came with beans and rice which is great but the rice was simply plain, white, converted rice. Never been to a Mexican restaurant that served steamed rice! The beans almost like water with no flavor and no texture. One in our party indicated the plate they received was dirty on the bottom as it had either not been washed or was stacked atop another of our meals. Unfortunately more food was left on our plates than consumed. The Margarita list is long and great. Mexican beer on tap although I will say the two we had were a bit flat. Finally the cost!!! Wow!!! Way, way out of line for what one gets. Imagine the high prices are an attempt to recoup the renovation costs. I believe this is something of a "new" restaurant and that means they are usually struggling to find their "legs." Hopefully they will as this is a beautiful restaurant and has a ton of potential if they can right the ship on the food side. Chips and salsa were mediocre. Chips too hard and thick with no salt. Salsa unimpressive, thin and no spices. No heat. My chicken enchiladas consisted of 3 tortillas with plain chicken inside, and some sauce on top. That's it. It did come with rice and some guacamole on lettuce and some pico. which was ok, but honestly, I could ( and have) made much better Mexican food at home. Paid $60 for one entree of chicken fajitas my girlfriend and I shared + two drinks. Our server didn't bring us both a plate to use so one of us had to eat off a piece of foil from the tortilla. I really enjoyed this restaurant at the old location, but since they moved to the Branchlands location it's not been a good experience for me and I gave them 2 try's. First, on both visits they claim they weren't able to make frozen daiquiris because the blended was broken (Walmart is less than a mile away to purchase a few). I purchased a premade drink that spins around in that machine like a slurpee at 7-11, it was watered down and I tasted no alcohol, they had to give me a shot to add to it. I came to the conclusion that they saved on alcohol by doing this. If I pay $12-17 for a drink it needs to be right. Secondly, the prices jumped up on the food for lesser servings and quality. Going up on the price is one thing but to reduce the serving size is a double blow. They were my #1 Mexican restaurant in town and now a 0. DON'T waste your time. This is the most inefficient restaurant I've ever seen. I had terrible service at the bar. There were so many workers not working together. Incredibly inefficient!!
