This place is awesome. Always excellent. I recommend the mimosa bucket, any of the bowls on the brunch menu and most definitely the Cuban coffee. Be patient with the wait - get there early or be willing to wait for a bar seat or a table. Promise it is worth it. Wait staff is flirty and fun. Obviously working hard. Place is clean and the bathrooms usually smell of clean mint soap. I mean seriously! One of the best. Parking sucks though. Work off the meal with a long walk blocks away to your car. read more

My friends and I came here for brunch on a Friday afternoon at 11am. The parking is a pain, as they have a limited lot in front but fortunately I found street parking that was free. We split the mimosa pitcher which came with 3 different juices - guava, OJ, and peach. It was very good! My favorite order is a mojito, the lechon mom's platter, and a side order of queso frito (these are my favorite!). The bread pudding is fantastic too. I like to go during happy hour and sit at the bar--I think drinks are a few dollars off. Staff is very friendly. The restaurant itself is good sized with plenty of seating. I really love their breakfast/brunch options! The Cuban flavors are awesome in their dishes. My favorite dish is the El nacional since it has eggs, avocado, chorizo, and fried plantains. I also recently tried their chia coconut pudding with tamarind which I enjoyed! Their coffee is good too (I keep forgetting to not too much sugar though since it is Cuban coffee). Service was fast since we decided to sit at the bar (was about 20 min wait for a table for two people at around 10am on Sunday). Decor inside is tropical and has great ambiance. They must've adjusted their hours because they've been on my to-try list for awhile but I could never make it before closing. Queso frito was as delicious as expected. If you've ever bought "bread cheese" and fried it up at home, same concept except they have a nice accompanying sauce. Buñuelos de Bacalao were not what I was anticipating based on the description, but rest assured, they did not disappoint. Very fresh and flavorful. The garlicky sauce was addictive. Even the garnish of greens was delicious. Chicken Maicitos are what I would order after partying too much. It's a wonderful hodgepodge of chicken, pineapple, corn, etc. with crushed potato chips on top. Also, their hibiscus tea was incredible!!! As for food, we started with the whipped goat cheese and the fried cheese cubes. For my main I enjoyed the avocado toast. I thought it would be a basic order but was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful presentation and thinly sliced cucumber lining the crispy toast. I had the perfect amount of food and left here felling full but not groggy. They also have a great selection of coffee drinks including affogatos, a personal favorite of mine. The move to a new location was the right choice - there is plenty more space and they can accommodate larger group sizes. The restaurant is usually packed, so expect a wait on busier weekends. Service and the food have not slowed down at all. Just as good as they were when they first opened. If you haven't been for brunch yet, this needs to be on your list! Came back to Guajiros after some wedding venue touring in the area. I've been wanting to take my fiancé to this spot for a while since our love story started in Miami. We came here for a late lunch. He was craving a Cuban and this was the perfect spot for it. We were also a bit tired so got an incredible cafecito and cafe con leche. They make the coffee exactly the way we like it, like in Miami. This made us really happy. He devoured his sandwich and loved it. I got their shrimp cucumber salad, which was yummy, but I wish had a bit more flavor. We both enjoyed the fries that came with the sandwich. The people who work here are really sweet. I love all the Miami decor. This is also a really fun spot for brunch. We decided to try this place out after walking around the downtown mall. They have a small parking lot next to the restaurant and there was a man standing out there to let you know where to park, kind of like valet but not. They have minimal outdoor seating and then more seating inside. We went in, were promptly addressed and decided to sit at the bar. We immediately were given waters and then it took some time for service afterwards. We started off with drinks- my husband got a mailka red soda (tastes like bubblegum), and I got a traditional limeade. We got our drinks and I noticed that they touch the tip of the straws while putting the straw in the glass. I noticed this multiple times while watching them make drinks. Not hygienic at all. I also noticed she didn't fill my drink up (I'm not sure if they offer free refills on the limeade), I took a sip and immediately noticed a hair floating in my drink. I requested a new one and got a completely Filled drink with no hair. I ordered the empanadas, patacones with guacamole, and sudado de pollo. I really enjoyed the empanadas and the sudado de pollo. The chicken was tender and moist with good flavor, the rice was a bit under cooked but fine. The guacamole was terrible: no flavor and the avocado was stringy and the chucks left were rubbery. It's also a very small scoop for the $10 they charge. For dessert we got affogato, the ice cream was really Good and espresso had nice flavor, together it was perfect. Jake "greeted" us when we walked in. He was pretty impatient and kind of rude when he told us to go sit in the waiting area. One of us was standing and he insisted that we all sit. We decided to get a drink at the bar, but were not allowed to because Jake came to scold us for taking up seats while we are waiting for a table. As if we were taking up space and not spending money on drinks... he said we can either eat at the bar and cancel our spot in line for a table or we can return to the waiting area and have him put drinks in for us at the host stand. Meanwhile, the bar had 8 empty seats... like, nobody was trying to sit there. I watched him interacting with others and it seems he's just an impatient and condescending person. Maybe he's very efficient at his job, but he's not the welcoming presence customers should have when they walk in the door. The bar staff was friendly and we had a nice meal with good drinks. We were surprised the Moscow mule didn't come in a copper cup. The piña colada is not a frozen drink...they serve something resembling a piña colada on the rocks. I ordered a banana old fashioned and it was legitimately one of the best old fashioneds I've ever had. Soooo good and slightly sweet with a pleasant finish. 10/10 I also got the steak platter with sweet plantains which was 10/10. The green sauce was as the best of the three offered, but Florida Man had the best packaging and that alone made it enjoyable. This would have been a perfect experience except for Jake. Maybe next time it will be a five star experience with a different staff member. read more

Great Cuban-inspired food for breakfast / brunch. I came with my wife on a weekday for brunch. I ordered the El Nacional, which was huevos con chorizo, avocado, sweet plantain, refried beans, pickled onions, and crostini. The eggs with chorizo was tasty - not overcooked and not overwhelmed with chorizo. What I ended up doing was using the crostini as a vehicle to eat the other things - I'd pile up some eggs, beans, avocado, pickled onions, etc. on the crostini and eat everything that way. But by themselves, each of the items on the dish were also tasty. I also ordered it with the homemade limeade, which was just ok. My wife tried the Breakfast Bowl, which was 2 fried eggs over rice and beans, and she ordered it with the fried cheese. The fried cheese was probably my favorite thing of everything we ordered - it was super dense but only lightly fried - very tasty! The service was ok - I think they may have been understaffed that day because one server was taking care of basically half of the restaurant. So it took a while for us to get our orders in, but once they were in, the food came out pretty quickly. I do wish the portion size was a little bigger for the price - while the food was tasty, the portion size didn't fill me up, if I'm being honest. Parking was a bit of a problem, as the lot is pretty small and full, and street parking is difficult to find since it's located by UVA's campus. So we had to drive around to find some street parking and walked to the restaurant. read more

Upfront, all of my reviews are based on my expectations, walking into the establishment. In this case, a Miami Cuban eatery in the middle of Virginia. Understand also, that I have done quite a bit in Miami and in the Caribbean. Walking in the atmosphere was very welcoming and fun. A variety of seating options and even though the establishment appeared to be a conversion of a former auto service garage, it was kind of cozy even on a cold winter day. The menu is exactly what you would expect with all sorts of Miami/Cuban dishes. The waiter was knowledgeable and very helpful in ordering. There was just the two of us so we didn't get to order a lot of of the menu items. But what we received was Tasty, but not overly impressive. But the next time I'm in the neighborhood, I would not hesitate to return to try more of the menu. read more
