"Why Would You Want That?" The wife & I went to Barkley Cafe for breakfast this morning. She ordered the Breakfast Burrito while I ordered the Cold Smoked Salmon Bagel. I told the cashier (male with grey curly hair) that I wanted my bagel open-faced. He paused, looked at me, then said "Why would you want that?". Why would I want that? Because I'm not a moray eel who can unhinge his jaw to fit tall things like a stacked bagel sandwich into my mouth. What kind of question is that? The vast majority of the 100+ bagel places I've been to in my life serve them open-faced by default. Why this guy was so perplexed by my request is baffling. If some customer requests soy milk instead of dairy milk in their latte, does he also ask "Why would you want that?". If some customer requests their English Muffin toasted, does he also ask "Why would you want that?". How about you stick to fulfilling the customer's order without challenging them to justify it? Anyways, the wife felt her Breakfast Burrito was just average, and my Cold Smoked Salmon Bagel was disappointing, though it was ultimately served open-faced. The lox didn't taste smoked at all, and there were hardly any capers. The arugula was messy without contributing much flavor. It would've been nice if they added tomatoes (like most bagel places). Not gonna bother coming back here. Also, the seating is very cramped. read more

Cute little coffee shop that seems to be family run. I ordered the Ham & Swiss sandwich and my boyfriend ordered the Sesame breakfast bagel. Slightly more expensive than most places for a breakfast bagel and sandwich ($8.95) and ($10.50) but makes sense in a small tourist town where there are limited options. Our food arrived quite quickly and tasted good. Would probably return next time we are in town, but that's probably also because there are limited options for breakfast. read more

While visiting recently we went there twice for our morning coffee and breakfast. The first day was fine. The English muffin in the breakfast sandwich is a little undercooked but it's ok. The second day we went, the music was so LOUD and my partner ordered a breakfast sandwich on a bagel - no bacon. He got it on an English muffin, with bacon. He took it back up to the counter but no one bothered to acknowledge him standing there so he took the bacon off and ate it. We couldn't really hear each other while we were talking over coffee. We discovered Foggy Bottom Coffee across the street and that was our new favorite place. Not really a breakfast place but very good coffee and really good service. read more

Quite possibly the rudest interaction I've had from a service employee in my entire life.  Clearly, I was a tourist in a town and coffee joint for locals, but the disdain, bordering on disgust, that I was shown from the young woman who served me was breathtaking.  If this was the only coffee in town, I'd drive the 40km to Tofino to be treated like a human being.   Oh yeah, the coffee was decent. read more

Great coffee if you're looking for a strong cup o joe to wake you up in the am! I had the caramel macchiato latte which was delicious and not too sweet! The caramel was really flavourful. Scrumptious strawberry and rhubarb slice was a perfect compliment to my coffee. Lots of locals flitting in and out, which is always a good thing! We wanted to go to Zoe's bakery and cafe because of the great review Yelp has, but they were closed today so we had to go to Barkley's. I had a cafe Americano which tasted like a cup full of warm water, there was way too much water for how much espresso was in this drink. It was over priced for what it was. The staff was friendly but I feel like the products they were provided with were not adequate to create a proper drink. read more

Nice spot for lunch or coffee. With a dog our options were limited, as their outside seating is not quite considered a patio, our pup was allowed with us. We had a boccocini panini and chicken pesto panini which were both delicious. The bread was fresh, with a light crisp taste. Coffee was really well made too. We are happy we found this lovely little cafe. It was supremely busy as it about the only decent breakfast joint in town, but they deal the the masses really well. Our favorite was the breakfast muffin sandwich with fresh made scrambled eggs, salsa and a teeny bit of tasty 'mayo' - it was consistently good and in the crush of people really fast and well done. Not being coffee drinkers they did have really good green tea for us. The staff always had a smile when greeting us. Finding a place to sit is a challenge but we learnt pretty quickly to get there before the crowds. We will be there again in the future. read more

Went here back in February during a short trip to Ucluelet, and it still stand out in my memory. Atmosphere was very hospitable, with a cozy interior and friendly staff. The coffee and hot chocolate they served were good. The breakfast sandwiches that they served, however, were outstanding. I can say without doubt that it was the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had. The eggs were done to perfection, the bacon was great, the cheese was evenly distributed throughout the sandwich, and the temperature was just right. My partner got the vegetarian version, which also proved to be delicious. Cannot recommend this place enough. If I should ever find myself back in Ucluelet (and I imagine I will), I will definitely make a point to return here. The location is also quite convenient, being right in the middle of town. They seemed to have a good range of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. They also seemed to have a focus on bringing in food from local sources and operating in an environmentally sustainable manner. 5/5, two thumbs up read more

Amazing Croissants!!! Delicious Vanilla Latte as well. Came here a 2nd time this weekend for breakfast. Holy cow - the standard breakfast sandwich is worth every penny!!! The bacon is crisp, the sauce and salsa are delicious... can't say enough good things!! Even the bread is soft but doesn't get soggy. After a 15 minute wait I was given the wrong order. Them they made it wrong a second time. (Ordered gluten free and got regular). We were sick of waiting so let it go. With slow, indifferent service like that, and a mediocre and overpriced product, this place would never survive outside a small town like Ucluelet. Ordered an iced vanilla latte from this cute cafe today & I wasn't disappointed! Wide range of items on the menu from breakfast sandwiches to delicious looking brownies, cookies and muffins! Drink menu is also extensive including many varieties of coffee beverages and teas (both iced and hot). Fairly well priced for a cafe ($3-$4). Staff are super friendly and upbeat! My least favourite place that we went to in tofino/Ucluelet. The coffee and food were decent if not overpriced, but the staff were all super rude and inside the cafe was super cramped. There wasn't really anywhere to sit while we waited for our drinks, but we had asked for them to go because we were on our way out of town anyways. As I stood there I couldn't help but feel like I was totally in the way as people struggled to put their dirty dishes in the appropriate spots. I wasn't sure when the next chance to go to the bathroom would be so I decided to use theirs before we left. The customer before me took like 10-15 minutes in the bathroom which made me worried because maybe they had gotten food poisoning from the cafe? And while I was standing outside the bathroom, one of the staff came out of the kitchen and walked past me to collect dirty dishes. She re-entered the kitchen and on her second trip out 'accidentally?' Smashed one of the swinging doors into me. I hardly feel like it was an accident as on her first trip out that door didn't even move. Maybe because I'm not a 'local' this seemed like appropriate behaviour? Because I am likely never going to see them again? I will definitely not be visiting this cafe ever again, the options are limited in this town but I would definitely go somewhere else!! read more

Tried this cafe today..... Fantastic. Coffee lattes were really good. Soups were so tasty, we had curried lentil and vegetable soup and a roasted vegetable sandwich. Service was very prompt. Lovely little place. Don't be offput by the deorative whale painting on the windows that prevent you from seeing inside. We would definitely go again. read more
