After drop-off, I received unexpected calls asking for additional procedures that were never discussed beforehand, which felt confusing and inappropriate, especially while my pup was already in their care. Communication was poor, inconsistent, and at times unprofessional. When I tried to get clarity, I was met with dismissive and unfriendly responses from staff and the veterinarian, Dr. Lemyre. I lost confidence in their care due to the lack of transparency and the way concerns were handled. At pickup, the environment felt uncomfortable, and my request for an apology was brushed off by Dr. Lemyre. To make matters worse, I was falsely accused of behavior that never happened. It's upsetting being falsely accused--based on apparent prejudice--of using profanity toward staff, which was definitely not true. I was in my own clinic with students from HPU present and the call was on speaker phone. Therefore, several staff members witnessed the conversation, including my the Clinical Manager and Executive Director. Despite this, Dr. Lemyre never offered an apology and instead suggested I could just come in and anyone can evaluate my puppy's surgical site in two weeks. Hindsight, she has been treating my puppy, and I can also have my records in to take my puppy elsewhere. Dr. Lemyre basically used tokenism today to mask her biased opinion, but it is very apparent. Overall, I left feeling disrespected, misled, and extremely disappointed. After paying a significant amount, I expected much better communication, compassion, and professionalism. She showed such lack of empathy for my pup as well and it made me question why is she a veterinarian she can't treat human beings with respect. I would not recommend this practice.

Part 2: My Experience with North Elm Animal Hospital and the Loss of My Dog, Lucas…read more On Sunday afternoon -- five days after my dog, Lucas, passed away -- I received a phone call from North Elm Animal Hospital and Dr. Claudia Sims. The first thing she mentioned was that a friend had informed her of my earlier post. I'll admit, I was surprised -- I expected the first call to be about Lucas, not my social media. When I asked her directly, "If not for the online posts, would you have reached out to me?" she replied, "I don't know." That response was extremely hard to hear. Following that conversation, I sent a detailed email to the clinic, which included my perspective on what happened on the call and my request for appropriate resolution. At this point, I am considering my next steps. This entire experience has not only left me emotionally devastated but has also created a significant financial burden -- and most painfully, I no longer have my dog. I'm sharing this so others know what happened and can make informed decisions when seeking care for their pets. Dear Dr. Sims, Thank you for taking the time to speak with me by phone on August 3, 2025, regarding the treatment and passing of my dog, Lucas, following his TPLO surgery performed at your clinic on July 16, 2025. This was the first direct communication I've received from you or your office since Lucas passed away on July 29, 2025. I want to take a moment to document the key points discussed, clarify my understanding of our conversation, and formally follow up on a concern I had during the call. Summary of the Call As I understood from our conversation: * You acknowledged that Lucas had cranial cruciate ligament injuries in both hind legs at the time of surgery. * Only one leg was treated surgically, and no stabilizing brace or interim care for the untreated leg was offered or discussed. * You indicated that the second leg "may have given out," leading to his sudden collapse and death. * You expressed that post-surgical follow-up calls were not made by your office, and I was not contacted by you or your staff after Lucas's death. While I appreciated hearing from you directly, I remain deeply concerned about the lack of communication and the absence of critical options that were not presented to me prior to or after surgery. Given Lucas's 93 lb weight, I believe I should have been made fully aware of the risks associated with unilateral surgery in a bilaterally injured dog of his size -- including the option to brace the untreated leg, schedule bilateral procedures, or otherwise plan for post-operative support. Concern Regarding Potential Call Recording During our call, I had reason to believe that the conversation may have been recorded without my knowledge or consent. If the call was recorded by you, your staff, or your clinic, I respectfully request that you confirm whether a recording exists and, if so, that I be provided a copy for my records. As a participant in the conversation, I would have appreciated disclosure if the call was being documented in that manner. Next Steps As mentioned previously, I have submitted a request for Lucas's complete veterinary medical records, including surgical notes, diagnostics, discharge information, and any internal communication regarding his treatment. Please consider this letter as part of that continuing request. I will also be submitting a formal complaint to the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board as I seek greater clarity and accountability in this matter. This experience has been devastating, and I am doing my best to move forward thoughtfully and constructively. I remain open to any clarification or additional information you may wish to share. All future communications should be by email only.

Three of the 4 were handed back to me seemingly okay. One dog, my most vulnerable senior dog was returned with obvious neglect. She is 14 and struggles to move around. So you would assume they would take extra good and gentle care of her. Instead, she is returned to me with cuts all over her face her tail her feet, a large mass swollen on her thigh that appears to have pressure ulcer from laying on concrete because you're not allowed to bring a dog bed or blankets for them. And feces on her body. Her leg from the mass to the toes are completely swollen and show signs of clear edema. I am disgusted with the care that was provided to my dog when I trusted this place to take care of her while I was out of town. I have canceled all future appointments with this facility. Do not bother boarding your pet here or seeking veterinarian care. I assure you they will find a way try invoice you for services you didn't want or don't need or add services to your invoice that aren't applicable at the end of their stay. They failed her, and I felt I had to fight just to have her examined. The tech had the nerve to ask me "did she arrive like this". What?! Obviously not. They just examined them a week prior for their annuals and complements them on how healthy and well taken care of they look, saw them during intake, and is suppose to examine them daily during their stay. How do you miss something like that?! Neglect and incompetence. Do not board your pet here!

They let us know that there were no exam rooms available and would let us know when one was ready. About 1/2 hour passed and a vet tech came out to talk to us about why we brought our dog in. We provided them with the details. And in a few minutes the vet tech and another individual came out to do swaps of his ears. The other individual tells us your dog likely has allergies. Really they know this without any testing or even an exam. That was the first red flag.(we learned later the other gentleman was the vet.) We proceeded to wait another 15 minutes until we were invited into the exam room. We are now 45 minutes into the visit. In the room the vet tech comes back and tells us it will be a little bit longer to get the results of the ear swabs. About 10 more minutes pass we are now approaching the 1 hour mark. The vet tech comes back into the room to give us the results. We question the results and the vet tech has to look them up on Google to explain it. Red flag #2. Our pet needed a heart worm test to get his 3 in 1 script refilled. Okay. we agree. Why we need to have him tested again after 6 months when he's been on a heart worm medication the whole time was beyond me. But we agree and incomes the same vet tech and another individual to take the blood sample. They proceed to try to draw blood. They are unsuccessful. The whole time they are moving the needle around in his leg. My wife a trained medical professional starts the loose her mind because of the way they are trying to get blood. We both scream STOP! Do not proceed any further. This was the final Red flag and we told them we want to leave. They attempted to respond and verbally question as to why we felt that way and that this was a "normal" situation. Not with our pet. Pet owners beware. I would look elsewhere. Total time spent 1hour and 45 minutes. With a $375 bill to go along with our time spent. Zero stars.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about PetSuites and the care they provided for my dogs, Sadie…read moreand Cooper. Sadie is 12 1/2 years old and requires extra attention, including two prescribed eye medications. Cooper is a large Lab/ Newfie mix weighing over 100 pounds. Because of their different needs, we reserved one of the townhouse suites and arranged individual playtime for them. Anna checked us in and patiently reviewed the detailed instructions I provided regarding Sadie's two prescribed eye medications, feeding schedule, and overall care. She immediately gave me confidence that my babies were in good hands. I especially want to recognize Tiffany, the Manager at PetSuites. Her compassion, professionalism, and leadership transformed one of the most stressful moments of my vacation into one where I genuinely felt heard, supported, and valued as a customer. What was supposed to be a relaxing vacation turned into an extremely stressful trip, delayed luggage, travel complications, and unexpected financial issues that left me overwhelmed by the time I needed to arrange pickup. When I spoke with Tiffany, she could hear how emotional I was. She listened without judgment, stayed compassionate and professional, and worked with me to solve the problem. She didn't just resolve an issue, she demonstrated what exceptional leadership and customer service look like. Tiffany represented PetSuites with empathy, integrity, and genuine care, and that made all the difference. Anyone can provide good service when everything goes perfectly. True customer service shows up when a customer is worried, emotional, or dealing with the unexpected, and Tiffany showed patience, accountability, and genuine care from start to finish. That says a lot about her character and about how this location is run. I also want to recognize Brandy and the rest of the staff. They were attentive and professional throughout. The Paw Reports showed Sadie and Cooper getting their scheduled playtime, and when we picked them up, they were healthy, happy, and clearly excited to see us, just anxious to get back home with their family. Even though I was over 2,000 miles away, the communication and updates helped reassure me that Sadie and Cooper were receiving the love and attention they deserved. This was our second time boarding with PetSuites, and this stay confirmed why we keep coming back. I take great pride in how my dogs are cared for, and I don't trust them to just anyone. PetSuites gave them a true home away from home. Thank you, Tiffany, for leading such an outstanding team, and thank you to Anna, Brandy, and everyone at PetSuites for treating Sadie and Cooper as if they were your own. Your compassion, professionalism, and genuine love for animals gave me peace of mind during one of the most stressful vacations I've ever experienced. Without hesitation, I will trust PetSuites with Sadie and Cooper again. If you're looking for a boarding facility where your pets are treated like family and where the manager truly cares about both the animals and their owners, I wholeheartedly recommend PetSuites.

I looked at the owner's website www.camp-ruff.com which describes their facility as a "lux camp" for dogs and puppies. I was intrigued and called for an appt to view the property and see the operations. I was met by the Camp Director/Owner, a delightful, sincere woman named Lucinda. She greeted me and my dog and proceeded to show me the camp home, which is divided into sections based on the needs and behaviors of the various dogs she was boarding. She listened to my description of my dogs needs, habits and observed her to judge how she would behave w other dogs. One by one she let a dog out from the house, where they have their "sleep over", cautiously to see what my dog would do. As the animals were about my dog's size everyone seemed to accept each other. Great news! Lucinda decided to take the next step by taking my dog w the small pack for some exercise on the trail in the woods behind the house. The dogs were running around having a great time which relieved my anxiety that my dog might not like to be off leash but she was running and getting some great exercise and learning to enjoy the pack mentality. No fighting or misbehaving, perfect! Lucinda works tirelessly to pamper the pooches morning and night. Morning feedings, evening feedings, medications and always careful observations of the pets. They all sleep like happy babies when the day ends in a real home environment. Prices are in line and reasonable I think for an overnight stay of $44 including feeding, walking, playtime and careful observation by someone who is highly qualified and very knowledgeable of pet behavior. All animals come in contact w other pets only when owner has documentation for boarding such as rabies vaccination, bordetello.
