Great caring staff. This is an acute respiratory hospital. It takes a while for the doctors and staff to really get to know the patient but they make every effort to do so. The CNAs and nurses are wonderful. The rooms are small but efficient. Also the cafeteria has good food! The parking isn't ideal, no in and out and it's $9. Also every time you go you must go through security twice. read more

A family friend is in their care and they have been wonderful in hosting the family from start to finish of visiting hours every day. The care team is providing more than just care, but also much needed rehab, engagement and physical therapy... with positive results. Based on our friend's needs and progress, they have recommended a higher level of rehab to best help his recovery. The facility is attached to a main hospital which allows for quick emergency response. The staff seems experienced and knowledgeable. They also offer tours. read more

Preferably get a whole firm and Sue, as this is the only pressure the Republican exert to make the medical system regulated itself better The nurses would not take my mother to Emergency even though my mother exhibited plenty of science she needs to be administered downstairs to Emergency. They would not take my mother to Emergency right downstairs at Valley Presbyterian until the doctor called, took him two hours to call back in the meantime they were doing nothing for her, just standing and watching saying that they could do a resuscitation, meaning if you disclose to death, this is all they're gonna do for you. Terrible medical service you don't want your loved one to end up in the same condition and then standing over you doing nothing to make a long story short, finally my mother ended up in Valley Presbyterian Emergency, diagnosed with sepsis, pneumonia and internal bleeding and admitted immediately to the hospital; and those idiot Nurses and Charge Nurse saying that they couldn't see anything wrong with her while she could have died, shows you what kind of professionals they are read more

It was my mother's dying wish to warn others about Barlow Respiratory Hospital as she was literally afraid for other patients' safety. Before she was admitted to Barlow, she had been given a prognosis of 6 months to 2 years to live. But after being placed in their care, her health declined so rapidly that she passed away within 3 months. I truly believe this facility played a significant role in accelerating her decline. In short, I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this place. There were several disturbing aspects of her care at Barlow. One of the most painful was how long it took for staff to notify us when she was transferred to the ER--hours passed before anyone contacted family. Even more troubling was the overall sense that staff were indifferent to her pain and discomfort. The doctor assigned to her, Larry Adelson, told us that her comfort was "in conflict" with her treatment--an inhumane and unacceptable stance. My mother herself said that staff members mentioned doctors like to keep their notes vague on purpose, which raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability. The social worker told me that they would keep her there "indefinitely" after confirming she had Medicare. It seemed clear to me that there was no real plan to rehabilitate her or help her recover in any way. Instead, it felt like she was being warehoused, not cared for. Out of all the facilities/hospitals she was ever in, I never saw her decline as quickly as she did at Barlow. And in the end, when faced with the prospect of being transferred back there, my mother chose to enter hospice and let go rather than endure Barlow's care again. Please think twice before entrusting your loved ones to this hospital. read more

I waited in line with my child for two hours, in the end he was already crying and hungry, I asked how long to wait for the doctor, an hour, two or three, to which they told me they didn't know, maybe three or four, and we just left. My husband was hospitalized at Barlow Respiratory Hospital Van Nuys. He stayed there for about 28 days. He was transferred last night to a Nursing Home. I have to say, Barlow is the best Hospital in CA. They took care of my husband 24/7 with professional love and dedication. The staff is professional and polite and loving. I wish I could give Barlow 10 stars! I was a patient there in 2014. Before I was transferred to Barlow, the hospital advised my family that I would need to be in a long term facility. My wife and children decided to go a different direction. Our daughter went to different facilities, talking to patients and family members that where at Barlow and other facilities. She was overwhelmed by highly recommendations she heard from Barlow patients and families. So we decided Barlow, believe it or not I was back home, off of the ventilator and oxygen after 30 days there. The Doctors, respiratory therapist, nurses, physical therapist, and all the office staff are remarkable! See my pictures. read more

Worst hospital ever. I was transferred from a pervious hospital for "rehab" to get physical therapy. I had bacterial meningitis leaving me with 5 abscesses in my brain. Only my left ankle was affected. It would roll over leaving me unable to stand on it. I truly do not know how this hospital is open. This was right when covid shut down everywhere. I had been on so many drugs from the previous hospital, I had no clue we were in a shut down since everything was open when I went in, no clue what was going on and no one would answer any questions. So many things happened it was unreal. This is just a few. The nurses wouldn't do a thing. If I had to poop they would say poop in your bed and a CNA will come to clean it when they can. They gave me an external catheter when my internal catheter came out because "I was peeing too much and they didn't have time to clean it". They cut all my hair off because it got so matted from no one ever brushing it. I had hair down to my waist it's now above my chin and a chopped up mess. I had to be fed because my right leg, arms and then hands slowly stopped working and I could no longer see properly my vision was so blurred. It took forever for anyone to feed me. I couldn't eat and they would threaten me daily to sew a feeding tube into my stomach (I perviously had a nose feeding tube at the first hospital) When they did all they did was complain about work and how they didn't have time to feed me. The physical therapy here was a joke they would get me out of bed for ten minutes had me try to walk on a rolled ankle(my knee also didn't lock) while two men tried to hold me up, then put me back to bed. I asked my doctor why my hands were no longer working and I felt as if I was regressing not progressing. He said that was normal. Um okay? On top of that they were fighting hard for brain surgery. My abscesses were not operable. Being there were 5 all through out my brain, it would have literally killed me. When my doctor accidentally said a family member could be with me my grandma was allowed a two hour visit for one day when I was told she was allowed to be there everyday. She wasn't supposed to be there at all due to covid but they ended up allowing me a visit. When she saw how I was being treated and looked she fought for a transfer to UC Davis in Sacramento closer to her and family in Redding CA which she flew from to be LA to see me for two hours. While fighting for a transfer my social worker lied on all my paper work. She said I was up walking and why would I be transferred from a level 4 hospital to UC Davis a level 5 hospital. My transfer of course got denied so my grandmother begged my step father to pick me up convinced I would die there. Not only did my transfer get denied but they were trying to put me in a long term skilled nursing facility behind my back because "I would never get better". I was on speaker phone talking to my grandmother (I only got my phone when my grandmother cam to see me, that's when I found I couldn't read to unlock me screen) when she was letting me know my father was indeed picking me up. A doctor walked in my room picked up my phone that I was only able to use if a nurse/CNA did it all for me and yelled and her. Then he hung up and said "wow what a headache she is, just so you know you were denied a transfer so if you show up to the er at UC Davis they will deny you and we will not be taking you back" due to my 26 years of age that means I'm stupid I guess and don't know laws, please. I said well it's illegal to deny anyone medical care at anytime for any reason no matter who you are, he then said that's not true, good luck and stormed out of my room. All the doctors, nurses, horrible social worker told me I would never get better switching hospitals wouldn't do anything. My father physically picked me up (literally picked me up put me in his car) from LA drove me to Sacramento UC Davis. After 2 and a half months in this hospital with no improvements. I spent a month at UC Davis. I had sever brain inflammation and swelling that Barlow never treated which was causing me regression and unable to move from the neck down eventually since it was getting worse and worse. I took steroids for 4 days and slowly got all my movement back. I have been home for 4 months. I walk with a cane for now. Other than that I am fully recovered. So here's to "never recovering". If you have a loved one here get them out. read more

Fabulous staff works at Barlow and the facility is clean! The staff genuinely care for their patients and they were so friendly and helpful to us (patient's family)! They tried to make my dad feel as comfortable as possible and were very patient with him, even with his dementia. They understood all of his symptoms, needs, and behaviors, they provided him with the dialysis that he needed without having to transport him anywhere, this place is awesome! read more

My dad was not suppose to be sent to LTAC at Barlow, but was. Security was like going thro TSA and they wouldn't even give me a reason why the POA couldn't even wave infront of the window. I got him a phone and who knows if they took it from him. The first day he was in there they had him in restraints and didn't let me know over the phone. The room was a thrash and was stuffy, and they wouldn't even answer the phone at 5:30 in the morning(24hrs?), because I was worried my dad was lonely being that he's been at the hospital for two months now. And I know he's stressed. I'm hoping the hospitals politeness will come around. Im curious to know who writes up these policies and procedure? also I left him a note let's see if he even gets that. he could be super thirsty, in a nasty room, lonely with rude staff and can't get somebody to speak to when he needs. Barlow Respiratory at Valley Presbyterian Hospital is a great place to send your loved one who needs help. The doctors are very intelligent and attentive, the respiratory therapists are kind and responsive, and the nurses were very busy but highly skilled and helpful. They got my husband off a tracheotomy in record time. The charge nurses really know what they are doing and keep track of everything going on in the hospital. They miss nothing! The physical therapists are the absolute BEST! They encouraged my husband, made PT fun and got him up and walking in no time. They were better than the full time PT folks at Valley Pres acute rehab, by far. In addition, the case manager and social worker are knowledgeable, friendly, hard working, and persistent. Dr. Bardwaj is a great doctor, Wonderful person . all of the nurses however are awful. Most of them are inexperienced and very rude. Speech therapist, Mike is horrible! Unfortunately he's the only speech therapist so that has him acting all the more entitled and egotistical. His "evaluations" lasted 10 minutes if that and he would come every other day. It's Good that it caters to those who have respritory issues. But they leave the patients waiting forever for for over 15min before acknowledging the patients needs. Then responds yes how can we help you over the intercom, and most of the patients have traches and are unable to speak which is an unconventional way of responding to. The staff is extremely slow and insensitive and at times have a definite attitude once they respond. read more

So many issues I don't even know where to begin. I can start by saying that I wish everyone health so that no one has to end up here. Unfortunately there aren't that many choices when it comes to a respiratory hospital geared towards rehab. The other reviews are accurate. You press the call button and it can be up to an hour before the nurse shows up. You press the call button and they turn it off, over and over and over. Yes some of the patients have trachs and can't speak! It's like being in prison. The rooms are so small that two people can barely be in there. A parent telling his adult children "how can you put me in here, this is hell, the most disgusting place" not by choice, it's so hard to see your parent suffer and not get the care they deserve . read more

They helped me get him into an amazing rehab facility and have continued to help even after he was discharged from Barlow. Last year my husband spent 6 weeks at Barlow. At first I was nervous because I had never heard of them. It only took me couple of hours to realize how amazing this hospital is. Besides having great doctors, their nurses and staff are the best. Every single nurse treated my husband as if he was a member of their family. They were always friendly and caring. I got to know most of the nurses during this time and they genuinely care about well being of their patients. Their respiratory therapists were very knowledgeable and helpful in answering all my questions. Their speech and physical therapists were positive and encouraging and went out of their way to make sure my husband got as much therapy as possible. Their management and psychologist would always check up on me to make sure I was ok and were there when I was stressed and needed some to talk to. This hospital doesn't have the state of the art facility or big rooms, instead it has a beautiful heart. I have been a patient at several hospitals and Barlow hands down has the best staff. I was there as an inpatient for one night back in 1994 or 1995. Oh, I see it says they are in Van Nuys. It was near downtown when I went. At that time I was working but my asthma had gotten so bad that I was unable to walk more than a few feet and unable to work. I looked in the phone book and somehow found Barlow Hospital. I went as a outpatient but the doctor nearly immediately decided to admit me. They put me on intravenous prednisone and I left the next day much better. The doctor was sure wonderful and really cared. Compare that to Olive View Hospital; in 1999 it took them two days (of me in the hospital) before they did anything. At the time that I went I was told nearly all their patients were referrals from insurance companies. I have not contacted them since then because I don't want to take advantage but I know they will do good if I were able to get their help. read more

I am very disappointed in the Respiratory therapy offered. On the Valley Pres campus, it purports to do actual physical and respiratory care. I transferred in on a Friday expecting to be in active therapy the next day. I did not know that there is no program at all on weekends. Apparently standard but not known to me. After a verbal evaluation, I performed one walk using a wheelchair down a long hall to what I Thought was a thrrapy room. Absolutely no equipment except a set of parallel bars and one tiny little foot pedal was in evidence. It was just a dark room cluttered with desks, tanks, etc. i have been through several sets of therapy with Valley Corf in Encino and the contrast was truly frightening. Corf uses a variety of standard exercise equipment and aids. After this very brief evaluation, I was told that I would spend Two days just in bed, "resting". Walking would not be allowed, and no use of the bathroom, but limited to bedpans unless given permission to use a bedside comode, Now, reality really sunk in. Stuck in a barebones room with an low grade overhead TV with a mysterious offering of medical commercials and having to consistently scroll through a puzzling array of programs, difficulty accedd a patient WiFi connection, a muddy, bad announcement sound system, bad lighting, cheap and frequently replaced control monitors and finger h2o meters, horrible food, and increasing concern that two days of this would put me in worse shape than i was, bed rest was causing pressure points, i got a herpes blister from stress, produced no poop for dsys because I was eating so little, my veins becoming more difficult to access for blood draws and infusion lines, increasing difficulty controlling oxygen levels, .. well the drift was not in a good direction. I have asked to request transfer back to home health care, thinking that offers a better outcome, even if that be hospice or electing to die, i do have END stage COPD so options for continuing enjoyment of activity have limits, Wish me well and go to Valley Corf. Wish me well! The Barlow staff did provide some truly wonderful care, but with cheap equipment and depressing surroundings, at least what I saw. read more

Dr.Kashani at Barlow Van Nuys was wonderful. He was very helpful and considerate of our son's condition. Our son entered Barlow with a tracheotomy after 8 1/2 weeks being in a medically induced coma with COVID-19. After only 5 weeks of respiratory, physical and speech therapy, he was ready to move on to the next phase of therapy. The therapists at Barlow we're friendly and professional. They did an amazing job and after removing the tracheotomy, feeding tube and chest tube he was doing so much better. My dad was just transferred in here yesterday and I came in at 3:29 asking for his nurse and he or she is still not here and it's 3:59. I had problems with the nurses last time I was here not taking proper care of my father and really didn't want him to come back here but they claim to be great here. My husband was admitted to Barlow Respiratory Hospital after being in a medically induced coma for two months battling COVID 19. I could not be more pleased with the care he received at this facility. He was brought in with a tracheostomy, drainage tube for his lung, feeding tube and on oxygen. During this time he was also bed ridden. The first week they had him sitting up and had most of the life sustaining devices out. Within 3 weeks all of these problems were resolved. He was up and out of bed learning how to walk again and also eating Whole Foods. The whole staff and administration were very helpful during this hard time since we were unable to visit him. Dr.Kashani was so helpful in keeping my husbands spirts lifted and mine. He was the first doctor to tell me that my husband was going to be okay and that he would soon be home to us. This was such a relief and I could not say enough good things about this establishment and the doctors, nurses, and therapist that they have on their staff. read more
