I love supporting local shops and buying from farmers' markets, but this Barn Fresh Produce is more of a roadside "catfish" with its giant colorful wooden signs and enticing promotional promises. I've stopped by before to buy fruit, which was okay (ie, small), but this time, I walked inside the building. Holy toledo, Batman, the products were coated under thick layers of dust and had mouse traps tucked in-between and underneath! There were boxes and cleaning supplies strewn about, and animals lying around the food. I was afraid I'd spot a tail hanging out of a hole or see something run by my feet based on how many traps were in the store. There may not be any sure proof way to keep pests out of indoor-outdoor markets, but they can at least keep the place cleaner and more organized, like not leave cleaning supplies right next to the food. I was also surprised that the prices were steep for what looked like products that haven't been moved in a long time. Barn Fresh Produce is not worth the stop for me, but if you are dying for fruit, I'd stick to the ones kept outside and make sure to wash it well before consuming. read more

I really enjoyed stopping at this farm stand. I wouldn't say the quality is as good as at a farmer's market but the avocados and artichokes were definitely a great deal and fresh . Lots of sizes of both - tiny avocados were seven for 1$ and there were loads of midsize and large avocados too. A few different varieties. Same for the articles. I loved the signage and had to take photos of all the old timey signs. So fun. I think it is definitely worth a stop especially for artichokes and avocados. My wife goes here frequently from Rio Del Mar. She always buys orchids, avocados and citrus along with anything else we need. The owner is great and even gave my wife 3 FREE orchids on her last visit because the selection was a little tired (although we are enjoying the 4 she purchased and the 3 that were free). Pretty unpleasant experience here. We'll start with their sneaky signage on the streets leading to the Barn Fresh Produce stand. They claim 10 for $1 avocados and 6 for $1 corn, there other signs got great deals for artichoke and plums too. However, one you get there the "regular" avocados you'll see will be 2 for $5 and the ones that are 10 for $1 are the teeniest tiny avocados! But I guess you can call that sneaky smart marketing to get the customer in... but then we move onto the customer service - the Hispanic woman at the cashier here is not a nice person. She tries to change up the prices, give back the wrong amount of change and has an unfriendly demeanor when you correct her as though you're not a paying customer trying to support and give her business. Her attitude and behavior ensured that we won't be back to support. We stopped here to add a fun experience to our roadtrip, not to be scammed and glared at. Give this place a try yourself to make your own opinion of course but in my opinion, the deals aren't all too great once you get in there, many of the fruits and veggies are on their way out and there are flies everywhere in the inside store where the artichokes are. read more

I am writing this review to help clarify that the avocado 7 for $1 is not a lie. You have to go inside the store and find those tiny avocados! same with kiwi, they are more of the weird looking type but taste just fine. Their artichokes are reasonably priced and are beautiful. Their fruits are fresh and reasonably priced. If you go during strawberry season, you will get gigantic ones picked that morning. We got ones the size of my palm. When you show interest in produce and an employee is around, he or she will point out which one is good or teach you how to pick good produce. Thankful Thursday review. My husband had to venture out this way for work yesterday. Every year we make a point of coming here during artichoke season. This year is obviously a little different. So I was sheltering in place at home but since he was here he made the stop. For 30 bucks he brought home 2 big boxes of produce that must have been grown in some great soil! Everything is huge and fresh. Peppers, a heap load of artichokes, tomatillos, strawberries, avocados, zucchini, cilantro, garlic and other stuff. It is a must stop in the area! They did away obviously with the samples and it is hard to social distance in there as it is small. But today my house is stocked with fresh produce. Drove by this fruit and produce stand on my way to Santa Cruz and for sure had to make a pit stop on my way back to pacific grove. What really got me the whole way was all the signs that they had along the hwy. Avocado, artichoke, kiwi and so on for a amazing prices.... Made it to the stand. I grew up in the city and also near the farmlands. My grandparents were farmworkers and I loved helping them pick strawberries in the fields. It was so nice to stop by this specific fruit stand since it reminded me of my childhood. This fruit stand lies off a scenic route 2 lane Highway 1. It is about a 15 minute drive away from Watsonville and a 20 minute drive from Monterey Bay. Parking was confusing since the parking spaces aren't marked. I just followed the other cars. You'll be parking on gravel/dirt - just a precaution to everyone that likes to wear white sneakers. There is an area in the front of the stand to take pictures with the cardboard cut outs. This fruit stand sells everything from dried fruit, local honey, to gooseneck gourds. I've never seen a gooseneck gourd in my life until that day. Let alone, didn't know it existed. The fruit stand extends to a separate room with messages on the walls (creative) written by visitors and tourists. If you like taking photos for the "gram" (Instagram), this is the fruit stand for you! The prices were reasonable. I purchased safely packaged sour pineapple rings for $3.99 (.60 lb), dried mango tamarind for $5.99 (recommended if you like sweet and spicy) and a small basket of fresh picked strawberries for $2.99. The avocados were a bit on the pricey side (they're avocados!) so I wouldn't suggest purchasing it from here, unless you absolutely want organic! Things to look out for: The fruit stand is next to a busy highway and can be easily missed if you are driving too fast. It's true, you definitely have to look over your fruit & it's very ripe. One crate of strawberries is $15.78 (they add .79 for credit). We picked out a few strawberries, maybe 4? with mold but no biggie. Cut it off & fine to eat. Even then, it's a huge amount of berries. I am a huge cherry fan and planned a road trip to San Francisco during cherry season so I could get some delicious farm fresh cherries. I tried some supermarket cherries but most of them were the small light red variety lacking bold sweet cherry flavor. Driving north on Highway 1 just north of Monterrey I was excited to see the cherry sign next to Barn Fresh Produce. I spotted some plump dark red cherries that looked good. I tested one. It was plump, firm and full of sweet cherry flavor. Best cherry I've eaten this year. I bought 2 bags. Strawberries were bright red and huge. I bought a basket. They were full of sweet strawberry flavor. I saw some California grown pineapple. Had no idea pineapples were grown here. There is also a cool cat that was patrolling the area. 2nd visit. The California grown pineapples were gone. In their place I noticed Rainier cherries. First batch of the season they were on the small side. Flavor was not as sweet as I prefer. I'll keep my eyes out for when the plump sweet ones are out. I was excited to see Taco Works of San Luis Obispo Tortilla Chips. Lays has a taco flavored version of Dortitos but it's a bit too cheesy for my taste. Taco Works version was fresh, crunchy, with a real nice tortilla chip flavor and additional taco flavor. Great tortilla chips. I was very impressed by the quality of the fruit here. I'll have to plan another trip up here during cherry season next year. :-) read more

We try to stop here whenever driving the Pacific Coast Highway. There are many roadside produce stands in the area, but Barn Fresh tends to have the most stock. Sure, I'm sacrificing some of the charm of shopping goods grown at the farm where they are sold, however generally time is of the essence, so at least I get the partial experience here. They have a large parking area that accommodates tons of cars. In front of the shop are rows of open-air displays filled with fresh produce, most grown locally, and I assume some grown elsewhere as not all are designated as such. A few years back we snatched up small avocadoes at 10 for $1 (!!!!!), and while that special was not available on my most recent visit, I did get 5 grapefruits for $1, Rainier cherries at $2.99 lb, and some surprisingly delicious (considering the time of year) apricots and peaches. They also sell dried fruit and nuts, bagged candy and chocolates, various Mexican goodies, beverages, spices, salsas, hot sauces, salad dressing, fresh salsa and guacamole, and other similar condiments. Some of the produce prices are ridiculously low, the bulk bags of candies are also very reasonable, and everything else is about the same or slightly less than a grocery store. Certainly, if I lived in the area I would often make this my first stop for fresh fruits and vegetables. Oh, and if you're lucky, the snuggly shop kitty will be snoozing about. read more

On the other hand, a bag of rainier cherries were looked from outside; however when I opened it, there were bunch of old/bruised (brownish) cherries. (This means it is not freshly picked) Apricots were good so is Tomatoes. I have yet to try watermelon that I picked up. Avocados looked old and teeny. Since moving to this area 4 years ago I have shopped for produce at all the local produce spots. This spot is my absolute favorite! The produce is fresh, the selection is varied and seasonal. The produce is also affordable! I am so blessed to be able to drive 10 minutes and buy some of the best produce I have ever had. LOL, Yes, truly. The best! I love artichokes and this location is right next to the artichoke capital of the world! Yes, the world. The other things that my favorite are, tomatoes, avacados, cabbage, onions, especially green onions, which I dice up and keep available for my morning scrambled eggs, apples, rasberries, blueberries, blackberries, asparagus, asian pears, brussel sprouts, and don't forget the hot sauces and freshly made salsa and guacamole. I could go on. The parking lot can be tricky. Be careful when pulling off the highway to come here. People drive super fast on the highway and entering can be scary. Just be careful! So I only came here because I would visit my Mexican friend studying his masters. We found out there's another stand that is closer. But we would come here half a dozen times. Driving back from Monterey to Palo Alto I noticed that there were a lot of farm-fresh fruit stands. I stopped at a few but they all reminded me of store fruit being sold on the fruit stand. Some even had the stickers :) Finally, I figured why this places the maximum car count. It really was an authentic fruit stand with a large collection of fruits and veggies. There was so much fruit and fresh I went crazy and bought more than what my fridge can hold. I found the mangoes a very surprising find (I know mangoes don't grow anywhere near Monterey). Just fyi in case you don't read the other reviews, the 9 for $1 avocados are for the teeniest tiniest avocados (literally called pee wee avocados). Great selection, but the .79 cent charge on credit cards kinda kills the deal boner. Super hard to get to on the side of the road with a steady stream of cars going both ways. This is definitely NOT a "not to be missed" spot. Only hit it up if you have nothing else to do. Two stars because I'm not mean enough to give one star. read more

That is what actually caught my attention initially to stop, take some pictures and get some fruit. What it was supposed to be stocking in strawberries only ended up in shopping fest, plus learning experience. I learned about new avocado varieties, learned also that they are people out there that fancy candy with a nasty little creature stuck in it (scorpions, ants, and alike), and that those sauces with politicians and funky names do sell a lot (as per the cashier). We love stopping at this stand near Moss Landing/Watsonville. You do need to be pretty discerning when looking over what to buy, but can get some pretty good deals if you know what to look for. They have a "sales" area with some older/blemished items that are bagged up for a dollar or two on the left side as you're facing the stand. They have smaller avocados 7/$1. Yes, they are small, but it's difficult to find one avocado for $1 these days, so when comparing quantity, it's still a good deal. Prices vary on different sizes of artichokes, etc. but still some good deals. Other items may be similar or worse prices than grocery stores, but sometimes I can find products here that are hard to find at other places, like crushed garlic, vs. minced. Pick and choose wisely. Only problem when buying per pound is that they do not have a scale anywhere outside. You have to have them check at the register, which can have a line. Line usually moves pretty quickly though. read more

The "abondanza" of colorful produce had me sweeping a hard left into the parking lot to check out the farm-fresh bounty. Sweet potatoes and artichokes (naturally, this is the artichoke capitol of the world), gorgeous strawberries, avocados, plums, mangos and more- as much for our hankering for them and as a cleanse for eating less healthfully during little one's spring break. (Okay, aside from a burger or burrito, we were pretty good; we like our vegetables). The Alemany Farmers' Market is better by virtue of the scores of vendors. Prices are better than shopping the middle man and certainly the produce is fresher. Pull on over! I'd skip the nuts because they didn't look that fresh and other things like honey, the prices were average. Now that they've moved from the other location in Moss Landing they're not as good. It smaller with a confusing layout. They don't offer some of the things they had at the other location like spices, honey comb, orchids, fresh cut flowers and Asian vegetables. They had a better selection of produce at the other place.
