The perfectly executed breakfast is underrated and often taken for granted. Barnacle Bill's sets a high bar that deserves appreciation. Popular with locals that know and often packed, they deliver high quality breakfast experiences the way it should be. Bacon of the highest standards, eggs over easy that are never runny, the most scrumptious breakfast potatoes, and the friendliest service. My personal favorite thing is that the toast comes to me BUTTERED! No more waiting on a frozen pat of butter to defrost in front of me while my toast gets cold and inedible. What a revelation! Thanks Barnacle Bill for solving this issue that causes millions of breakfast fails around the world daily. Please patent the idea and retire prosperous. Aside from breakfast there's classic local fish and chips, salads, burgers, and a rare treat: Newfie fries-- a poutine with stuffing and gravy. Doesn't get more Canadian than that. Enjoy! read more

While driving through Cambridge, ON saw this place and decided to drop in for fish and chips. One of those small town eateries that seemed to be a local favorite of the mostly retired crowd, the food was below average with the fish tasteless and the batter that soaked in a lot of oil( nope). Service, the ambiance and the way the food was served was more like a fast food joint rather than a proper diner. However place was clean and efficient. The waitress needed a wee bit more training. read more

I was on a trip to Cambridge and saw this place near by where we parked. The restaurant is pretty clean and good. The most of the clients seemed to be seniors at this location on a Saturday evening. The service was quite good and fast. The server was friendly and helpful. The menu has quite a bit of choices in terms of fish and is not too bad on the pocket. The bring bread in the beginning to munch on. We tried their fried fish and a fish burger with Fries. The fried fish was Pollock and was nice hot and crispy but the fish tasted ok, whereas the Fish burger was Cod fish and was quite good. The fires were fresh and quite nice. Parking is free and over all a decent joint. read more

Been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now and finally made time to visit. The staff are very friendly. The value is great with good portions of fish and chips for a decent price. I went with my girlfriend and she and I both go the Haddock. Our waitress came back with an extra piece of fish because, in her words, the pieces of fish were smaller than normal. The fries were excellent! Nice and crispy! However we both found that the fish was very greasy. The tarter sauce was not homemade and we had to ask for lemon slices for our fish. If the few changes I mentioned were made I would probably give this restaurant 5 stars. read more

This place is a misrepresentation of Newfoundland hospitality, service and food quality. I ordered a one piece fish and chips with gravy. My room mate ordered a cheeseburger and poutine... the bill was 51.00 ! I looked at the receipt and was charged for a two piece. This was an obvious mistake by the young girl who realized the mistake and promptly told the lady who was cooking. The cook.. for lack of a better word... refunded the difference and slapped the money in my hand.. no apology.. no smile! When we arrived home, we had a two piece with the most disgusting fries I have ever had ! (Frozen coated)I have attached a video of the bottom of the cheese burger, which was as hard as a rock! I did not get my gravy! The food is one thing but the service was awful... two employees hanging out at the cash... chatting and playing with their 3 foot pony tails... and the cook slapping stuff around. Friendly staff, generous portions, and on-point pricing make Barnacle Bill's a hidden casual gem for a down-home breakfast or low-key lunch. It's nice to have a fish shop that does more than fry fish and let's you sit down and actually enjoy your meal. This is an English-style fish & chip place. I ordered Pollock & chips w/mushy peas. It was okay. The place is apparently under new management and seems to have lost some of it's charm. The service was friendly, but a bit on the slow side, especially since there were only three other tables with customers. As fish & chip places go, this is pretty good, and I will come back, when in the area. We used to drive here to get the fish & chips. This is a great little place to get together with friends. It's wheelchair accessible and there is multi level seating throughout the restaurant. Big tables for big families as well. The food is good if you like deep fried but they also offer healthy options. I have not been disappointed with the food in the year I've been dining here. They also have a good breakfast. Staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean. My only complaint is that they seem understaffed when really busy. read more

I am giving this review 1 star for my service today when dining in. Usually take-out service is about a 3-4. I took my eldest daughter out for supper tonight, on our way back from shopping, as well as ordering take-out for the rest of the family. We were greeted promptly, and beverage orders were taken. I decided on the one piece haddock and chips, but inquired as to whether or not there would be a charge to upgrade my fries to a poutine. I was told by our server 'B,' that no, there was no extra charge as I could also get gravy as well with no charge, so I said yes to the poutine upgrade. I asked her when during our meal, should I give her my order for the take-out meals, and she said about 1/2 way during our meal. She never did come back to see how our meal was, or to refresh our drinks, so I flagged down another server to place our take-out order. We finished eating and 'B' came back with our bill. I looked the bill over, and noticed a $3.00 charge for 'Open Food Lunch.' I asked her what this was for and she told me that there was a charge for upgrading to a poutine. I told her that I had specifically asked her before placing my order and she had told me that there was no extra charge. She admitted that she made a mistake and would see what could be done. We heard her talking to someone in the back, and then she came back to our table. She told me that even though it was her mistake, there was a $3.00 charge that I had to pay, that they could not take it off my bill. I was speechless at this and thought, "well there goes your tip then." When we went to the counter to pay and get our take-out order, the lady there to ring me in asked how everything was. I told her the exact account of what happened, and she called another lady from the back, who I again told the story to. That lady called 'B' over, and 'B' kind of hid beside the end of the front counter. The lady asked her specifically, "did you tell them that you didn't know if there was a charge, or that there was no charge for the poutine upgrade?' 'B' answered very quietly, "that there was no charge." We already knew she had lied when she went to the back to see the first time, when I questioned the bill. The lady turned to me and said, "This time, I will take the charge off, but next time, you have to pay it." I told her that I had asked prior to ordering, and that her staff should know the menu and prices. She then grabbed a menu and told me that further down, "you can see that we charge $1.40 just for a side of gravy." I told her that I didn't scan the whole menu, but asked my waitress. I felt like the management, if that is who the lady was ringing in my bill, was focused more on pinning the mistake on me, instead of the fact that her staff member did not know the menu and prices, and was not forthright in admitting she had lied to them, when checking the 'extra charge' for me. Management should of corrected the mistake right away, without hesitation, and not talked to the staff right infront of us to see if what I told them was true. Why would I lie over a $3.00 + tax charge? It was one of the worst handlings of Customer Service by both staff and management that I have ever been part of. They also forgot the lemon for our take out fish, but that was minor to the service received today when dining in. On an aside, an older lady in the booth ahead of us, went to use the washroom before leaving with her husband tonight, and missed the bottom step down from the washroom level, when heading back to her table. She was pretty shaken up, and it could of ended up worse. They need to have a piece of yellow tape on that bottom step as they do at the top one, going to the washroom, as well as a hand railing the length of both stairs, not just a C-bar near the top one. Yellow tape on the stairs going up from the dining area to the front counter would also help the elderly, and children so that they too do not miss a stair. read more

Horrible customer service. We arrived at 7:15 and it closes at 8 and they still wouldn't give us a table. The waitress never checked in, they ate in plain view instead of taking orders of other customers that still hasn't ordered. Stale bread. read more

When and a friend and I arrived in Cambridge for breakfast/brunch at 11:30 Sunday morning, halfway through a round trip cycling jaunt (Toronto--Cambridge and back) we hoped to find an unpretentiousness, informal, and inexpensive diner to fill up and fuel up. We found it in Barnacle Bill's. Located right downtown, a few meters from the Grand River, and, doing brisk business with the locals, we couldn't have happened upon a more appropriate venue. Nothing fancy here, but nothing fancy expected either--it was exactly what we sought. Two farmer's breakfasts later (with a side order of French toast) we were good for the ride back to Hogtown. I am by nature a very positive person but I found Barnacle Bills to be a big disappointment. We had just enjoyed a play at the wonderful Dunfield Theatre. (Highly recommended). Right across the road is Barnacle Bills. One of our group had heard good things about their fish and chips. I love me some good fish and chips so we crossed the street. The first thing I noticed was the clientele was very senior, a great contrast to the staff who were all young girls under 20. The first waitress wouldn't smile, joke or barely talk. She screwed up on missing side orders. Turns out she wasn't old enough to serve alcohol. So another waitress delivered the drinks. She didn't look old enough either. After we got the hand written bill for the food, the "older" waitress came over to ask if we enjoyed the service. We lied and said it was okay. She then went on to tell us that they had problems with the girl. Isn't teamwork wonderful? The food was adequate at best. I had a seafood platter that consisted of scallops, shrimp and haddock and fries. Fries were excellent. I wish I could say that about the seafood. Nice breading but I suspect the oil was old and the flavour suffered. All in all, a disappointment. read more
