Many years of service and satisfaction from Barnes and Noble get a big thumbs up. This is the only location located in the Dutchess County and the Hudson Valley with the other closest being Kingston, Newburgh, Mohegan Lake (near Peekskill), and West Nyack at the Palisades Mall. This location has two floors making it very convenient for the space that's needed. 1st floor is provided with many novels, magazines, a limited CD and vinyl selection, and a cafe with drinks, a bakery, and sandwiches. The 2nd floor has more novels and a children's section. The selections of books are endless with a lot of variety and different genres to choose from. It's pretty easy to pinpoint where the books are with their genre by looking at the labels located on top of the shelves. I'm very impressed with the organization and the time the employees take to keep up with the process. Having great service and care goes a very long way, and this place sure knows how to do it. Things have been moved around throughout the years, so help is the first place to go. read more

My boyfriend and I are huge book nerds - I mean, he's a horror author, so what can you expect? We always try to seek out the nearest Barnes and Noble no matter what city we're in, and I have to say that after the huge store in NYC's Union Square, this location is my favorite. Two floors chock full of books, music, and gifts - what could be better than that? The store is also very clean, organized, well stocked, and staffed with friendly and knowledgeable employees. Like other Barnes and Noble locations, they have the Starbucks Cafe inside the store, but this one was bigger and carried a wider variety of snacks and teas than other locations I've been to. I was able to enjoy a (locally made!) Harney and Sons hot pineapple green tea while thumbing through the newest James Patterson release. What a great way to spend a Friday evening! read more

I recently updated a review of the Barnes & Noble in Livingston NJ and my negative reaction to the "question and answer" you go through to buy a book and the fact that new company policy seems to dictate that they ask you for your email address in addition to everything else. Just seems very intrusive to me, but I guess some big-wig in corporate decided it's something that might help drum up some additional business. Not quite sure how that works, but...then again...I'm not in corporate. Also not a big-wig. I came here recently to this particular store...which I've always liked...and...yeah...these guys are in trouble. Not that that thought hasn't occurred to me before this, but it was really brought home to me with this recent visit. It's been about a year since I was here last and not much has obviously changed. The parking lot was as empty as I've ever seen it, although it was mid-day in the middle of the week. Maybe just an off-hour on an off-day. The café seemed to be pretty busy, if not exactly thriving. The bathrooms were still clean. Most of the differing sections of books were where I remembered them to be. The magazine section was well stocked, as was the section for "discount" books. The surprise came when I ventured into the CD/DVD/Blu-Ray section. Everything is gone, pretty much. Some DVD's selling for really low prices, as well as CD's, but mostly just row after row of empty shelves. Maybe they're getting rid of that section in order to expand the book section, but I doubt it. I also had an employee ask me if she could help me as I wandered around. Not once, but twice. I've never been a fan of that. There used to be a store called "Coconuts" that sold music/movies and the employees would immediately ask when you entered, "Can I help you?" I'd always answer no, I was just looking. They would invariably stand not far away, eye-balling me with the same intensity they might have given a recently paroled Sing Sing inmate still in prison denims. Before too much time had passed, they would ask again...in an edgier tone...if they could help me. At that point, I would mutter, "Ah f..k it!" and head somewhere else. ("Coconuts" disappeared long ago-- good riddance.) I'm not suggesting this is the Barnes & Noble approach. The employee who asked if she could assist me was pleasant, sincere. I didn't feel I was being viewed as a potential criminal. But it's new. Again...I suspect someone up the corporate food-chain felt a more hands-on approach with the customers might be good for business. Of course, I could just be a paranoid idiot...but I don't think so. I bought one of the discount books--- "Stalin: Waiting For Hitler-- 1928-1941" by Stephen Kotkin (I'm fascinated by Russian history in general and Stalin in particular). The list price for this 2017 book is $40.00, and it's a very thick book. I got it for $8.00. The CD's were selling for $5.00, and there were some very popular titles. This seems to be much more of a discount than I've previously seen anywhere. It could be they're in a "Santa Claus" kinda mood at the end of Summer, or it could be they're in serious financial trouble. I'm opting for the latter theory. And...yeah...the young lady who rang me up asked me (1) If I had a card, (2) did I want a card? and (3) what's my email address? So...it's not just a Livingston Barnes & Noble thing. It's a Barnes & Noble thing...period. I declined as graciously as possible, but now I'm thinking I should have just given her my email address. It's bothering me as I reflect upon it. I really don't want to see this chain (or this store) go under. I'm horrified that my favorite location in Paramus might not exist in the near future. So, if this is an effort to salvage the business...asking for your email address, asking if you can be helped by the salesperson...then so be it. It's a relatively minor annoyance. I was depressed when the chains put the independents out of business. Now I'm depressed that Amazon is putting the chains out of business. This isn't quite the Paramus location, but it's pretty good. It has 2 floors, which isn't always a Barnes & Noble feature. They have an extensive children's section upstairs. Downstairs, they have a good selection for adults. Yeah, they have crap by Bill O'Reilly, but they also have books by real historians like Stephen Kotkin and Ron Chernow. And some are only $8.00! It would depress the hell out of me if I drove up this way next year and saw an empty building where the Barnes & Noble used to be. Or a "Dollar General" where the Barnes & Noble used to be. Yeah, Barnes & Noble is a chain, but it's a chain selling books. That's a good thing. It beats a chain selling cheap shite. So...people of Dutchess County...please continue to patronize this store. Resist hitting that Amazon button if you can. If you're an out-of-state traveler like me, search this place out and buy some books. And if they ask you to provide them your email address...where's the harm? read more

Don't ever get the expedited shipping option. This item took about two weeks to be delivered with the "express" shipping. I contacted their "customer service" (they need to change the name of that role) and was told it is express shipping once it leaves the warehouse, which could be a while. I recently went to the Rt 9 Poughkeepsie, NY store after looking at their website. The website clearly states they open at 9am. I got their a few minutes early and then noticed several people trying to get in the door. I called their store phone number and the recording says they do not open until 10 am. Barnes & Noble.. My home away from home.. Coffee: they have a huge Starbucks Cafe with 20 plus cafe and group tables. The books: oodles and oodles of fun thing to read and they did a good job organizing the massive amounts of reading materials. I find this B&N quite comforting compared to ones I've been in Manhattan. Children's section: Just amazing, the kiddo is a big fan of Thomas and Friends they this location has Kids reading time in the mornings, added plus a huge place set with many wooden Thomas and Friends trains (Big Plus) The Huge two floor B&N which also happens to be right across from the IBM campus is quite interesting. The mall also includes Toys R Us which makes it a fun place to just wander around and enjoy many shopping experiences, I did my usual enjoy a nice paper, drink a good cup of Joe and entertain the kids all in one location. You just can't beat that. The store opens at 9 to 11 weekdays (Awesome) The Staff are all professional, friendly and knowledgeable about the books and contents they have in the store which is a big Plus.. This place is HUGE and I'm pretty sure you can find something inside that you really want. From a large cafe to music area, to two floors of books upon books upon books, this B&N is a reader's absolute heaven. I find myself here oftentimes over the weekend spending a few hours in one of the many tucked away isles. Since it's open until 11pm, it can be easy to loose track of your time. I've never had any trouble finding things with the help of the friendly staff. They also work hard to keep the store extremely clean and well-managed. From sidewalk sales to new releases, I find that the store is pretty up-to-date on a lot of things. There's a little sumthin-sumthin for everyone here! read more

We visited this store yesterday evening. The two employees at the Information Desk were exceptionally friendly, and one of them - Travis - spent a lot of time helping me find four books located in different sections of the store. When I called to compliment the general manager today, the young woman who answered the phone was very pleasant. The store has two floors and it's quite large - and with the exception of one of my favorite types of books (photography), it had a very good overall selection. read more

This place is incredible! Two levels. Shelves full of beautiful books. There is even a toys and games section which hits the sweet spot for my kiddos. I give this one star to starbucks inside of the store. Had coffee sat at one of the maybe 8 tables available for sitting due to the Covid-19 of spacing. and also some countertop space available for sitting. After about 40 minutes was told we had to leave due to a 30 minute limit. I could understand the limit if there was no tables or people waiting for a table but the place was almost empty , there was only two people besides us sitting at a table. Please why make things worse than they are think for yourself have some common sense have some lead way let people enjoy when they are able to. Mangerment please instruct your employees better. I understand rules but rules with common sense serves the customer better read more

I always prefer to start with independent bookstores and game stores. But I must give credit where credit is due. This Barnes & Noble does a really good job of staying current and relevant. They devote space to what they know people want, whether it be Nook sales, the Cafe, music, and now a really good assortment of games - and they have the space to make all these changes. If I want something immediately, and I don't want to wait for it to be shipped, or to drive someplace a little less accessible, I'll typically buy it here. I've spent my time noshing in the cafe, browsing the magazines, listening to CDs on the display wall, etc. If people consider industrial-strength bookstore chains to be evil, I guess we have to call this Barnes & Noble a necessary evil. read more

My love for this specific location started in 2004. I would skip school, come here then go to Denny's then blockbuster and head home. I have always loved that this location has 2 floors, cozy chairs, and a cafe. (One time when I went inside another location in Connecticut desperately needing caffeine, an employee asked me if she could help me, I replied with "point me to the direction of the cafe please". She smiled so enthusiastically and said "we don't have one". . I wish I could have been teleported right then and there to my home location. Who smiles about not have a cafe?!) Now being a mom I appreciate this location so much more than I have before. They offer 2 weekday story times plus Saturday story timewith miss Ann. It's truly awesome. Ann is AMAZING with the children and the parents. She is so helpful and kind. I love how well stocked they are. If they don't have what you're looking for they order it ASAP. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. The store is always kept nice and organized. I do wish they had automatic doors. Would help many elderly, handicapped, and parents with strollers and baby carriers out when there isn't a nice stranger to hold the door open for them. Other than that this place is great. read more

I spent a few hours perusing some books on Farmhouses (for my planned reno). People watching is far more intriging at B&N...one never knows who may be lurking about. The staff refer to the computer for most questions...I do love a good old fangled book store where the clerk is the encyclopedia of all knowledge of books~~~ Selection? Pretty extensive. Price is almost always at the top of the range unless you are opting for 'clearance' reads...and now with kindle, ipad and nook---who knows where the mighty B&N will go ? ? ? B&N is most helpful in allocating difficult to find reads...so I do give **** for that... I looove the kiddie section and enjoy seeing the kids who are evolving into readers~~~readers experience much more adventure in their lives ! read more

I love this place but after today I've decided I need to post about my experience. I will return but will just be sure to avoid this cafe worker the next time I'm there because he was unprofessional and lost a sale. I've worked plenty of retail jobs before so I know how it can be and I am now employed in the service industry. Please also note this is a rainy Monday and I find sometimes networks act strangely in this weather. I didn't want a coffee but was thirsty so I got one of those izze drinks from the cold case. Service was slow but that wasn't that big of a deal for me. By the time I got to the front of the line there was a new cashier, a gentleman in his mid 40s with an accent, the previous girl was making drinks. I paid with a chip card so I inserted it into the bottom of the machine with a code -chip malfunction. He said that if it happens 3 times I have to pay with a different card so I needed to slow down. Cool. Long story short I hit my third time and I asked can I swipe instead? He covered that part of the machine with his hand then said no you have to pay with a new card now. He even turned the computer screen where there was a note saying " don't let customers insert their chip more than three times with this error message and don't let them swipe instead; they must pay in cash or another card. I complied and pulled out my credit card and slowly inserted it and viola...the screen didn't even change from "insert card or swipe" screen and the total... $2.70. After a couple seconds and him looking to see what was wrong I pulled the card back out and put it away. " ok I don't know thank you" and with that I left with him saying sorry. I heard the next person in line question what the problem is too with my transaction and why he wouldn't let me swipe instead. I went straight to Ulta and it happened there too and they let me swipe. Usually when I plan to stop by at a store to pick something up, I anticipate for it to only take five minutes. The day that I anticipated for my pick up to last the reality time frame of 15 minutes was the day it literally only took me two minutes to get checked out. I literally walked into the store, said hi to a employee who is just walking by with some wrapping paper, and he immediately asked me if there was anything that I was looking for. I told him that I'm just going to pick up a book that I ordered online, and he immediately checked me out, while there was a line of just 2 people. Maybe because I was there at an off-peak time (7pm) this was convenient; regardless, employees don't usually go out of their way to help customers. read more

I have no complaints on the overall store. I've been to Barnes and Nobles in other states and they are all fine. My complaint is on the workers there in the one in Poughkeepsie, NY South Road only. Not all of them, but one too many are unhappy with their lives, and low wages, and SHOW IT. It's mainly the people working at the main desk. I know the store has to deal with a lot of homeless people looking for a chair to sit in but, that's no excuse for letting go of standard manners. I hope they do better, because I really do like the store! read more

First time at this location, and I must say out in front everything looks Great. However used the rest room and they were filthy, the men's handicapped stall was a total mess, there was dried up fecal matter on the stall walls, door lock & handicapped handrails. The fact that it was dried up means that they havent cleaned in quite along time or the they don't care about the mess. I will never stop here for anything again. The management should be inspecting to make sure proper work is being completed thoroughly. Shame on them! read more

OK so anybody who loves bookstores or who needs to find information on something this is the place to go it feels like college/library/study place it's so cool the people are really helpful I forgot the guys name but he was a fluffy and tall dark-haired individual and he took me right to the book that I needed to and asked if I needed anything else very courteous and quick I appreciate it plus he gave me a coupon for a dollar off the drinks thank you sir whoever you are please stay kind I would recommend this place to anybody. The kids section go over there it had so much stuff for the kids the books you have to read a Dr. Seuss book they're still funny they haven't gone out of style and it's great when they have the clearance books off definitely something if you want to do something different and remember your childhood library days we can definitely get lost in there and it's OK somebody will come and find you read more

In response to some of the other comments as I live in poughkeepsie, not by choice I assure you, I agree with negative comments, seems to be our area, general lack of professionalism and concern for people. Homey and attentive atmosphere are key. I would like also to add that those B&N stores that have starbucks be better Qaulity than this one! Terrible coffee and service, I never buy there anymore. I have ask some questions, but seems employees are either uninterested or just plain untrained in helping you with your choice. I still go there on account of my love for books and deals that I call drive to when online shopping is not a option. Thought it may have improved several months later. Not much, although kids behind counter are more polite. It's December 6th, close to Christmas. A whole section in back was roped off; no performers the whole time we were there. Why have the ropes up? Heard music - Adelse, some Disney, some random Christmas songs. Then, more Adele, Adele, Adele - we like her new "25" but after spending a couple of hours there, quickly grown to dislike intensely. Take a hint- IT'S CHRISTMAS SEASON. Great selection of books, magazines, and gifts but I find their staff to be overall very rude on more than one occasion. (Rude as in their tone of voice being used when talking to me, being annoyed that I asked for help in locating an item and so on) After putting up with this several times I complained to a store manager after a particular incident and she was very dismissive and said that the worker I was complaining about was very well liked. Seeing that she wasn't taking anything I said seriously I emailed corporate and got no response for 2 weeks. I emailed them again and they referred me back to the manager that I had listed in my original email to them. I used to spend a lot of time and money in this store and now I do not go at all. A great place to go for a cup of coffee while deciding on your next book to read. Very nice staff, both in the bookstore and the Cafe. Be sure to get a membership so you can save 10% on your purchases in addition to other great member benefits. The one thing I would complain about is now being addressed. The men's restroom was not in the best of conditions. There's a project in place now to repair/make much needed improvements. My fave in the Cafe is pumpkin cheesecake when it's being offered. read more

There really isn't nothing to complain about the store itself since I make most of my purchases on their online site. It more about those who sit at the snack bar for long period of time doing nothing but taking up space. Don't these people have a job or a life? Your suppose to go out and do things not go out just so you can go on your labtop for a few hours!!! If your looking to find a table to sit down to eat and chat with a friend you won't find any. That seems to be the problem with places that have free WiFi because your gonna have more people just sitting there not provided the store with any business just parasites sucking up the free wifi. read more
